Extending the Apple Ecosystem

Apple has already done an excellent job of building an ecosystem of devices on top of the iTunes platform. But now, it appears, they are extending into the enterprise:

http://www.smartertechnology.com/c/a/Smarter-Strategies/Apple-SpinOff-Hosts-Enterprise-App-Stores/

And this makes total sense. Although the company in question, Apperian, is not a spin-out of Apple but a privately-funded company that, unlike other companies, it has Apple’s blessing with using their Over-the-Air technologies for a...

Prospero’s Precepts: 11 Tools for Critical Thinking

A fantastic list of 11rules culled from some of history’s greatest minds can serve as a general-purpose guideline for critical thinking in all matters of doubt. This list appears inAKA Shakespeare: A Scientific Approach to the Authorship Question(Peter Surrock) and is discussed in more detail at Brainpickings:

All beliefs in whatever realm are theories at some level. (Stephen Schneider)
Do not condemn the judgment of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong. (Dandemis)

Maybe We Can’t Just All Get Along…

detroitlabel

(Photo of Detroit’s 8-mile Road courtesy of Dustin Cable.)

A fascinating visualization of census data (Wired) shows us that we aren’t as integrated as we think we are. The article provides a look at 17 areas in the U.S. (and 3 nationwide) using colored dots to represent different ethnic distributions. The result? Largely homogenous groups of ethnicities. About the study:

The map, created by Dustin Cable at University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, is stunningly comprehen...

What does it mean to “Be Mobile?”

In this day and age, being mobile has a whole different connotation than what it might have meant even ten years ago. The proliferation of mobile computers (phones, laptops, personal music players, etc.) have enabled us carry some of our content with us (contacts, music, etc.). But these devices, however powerful, were never meant to keep us in constant connection with that content…yet that’s exactly what we want to do. As our real lives have become more entwined with our digital lives, as th...

Is Ebenezer Scrooge schizophrenic?

He exhibits many characteristic symptoms such as a shunning of relationships, solitary existence, emotional detachment, fantasies in which he acts out reality. Dickens may well have been exploring mental illness. Worth a literary investigation?

Quote: Writers Write About People, Not Characters

Posted in Tumblog

“When writing a novel a writer should create living people; people not characters. A character is a caricature.”

I Wonder What They Are REALLY Doing…

Posted in Tumblog

Joseph Holmes, photographer, spent two months capturing candids of people texting. Now that may not seem like a very interesting subject matter but I believe he got inspired by the curiosity of wondering what was so important.

When you look at these pictures, you begin to wonder what they are texting. Is it about banal things? Is it something important? Is it life changing? Becau...

Has the Tipping Point for Online Video Finally Come?

Posted in BusinessTechnology

The recent announcement by Netflix to phase out third-party CDNs in favor of an open-source software/hardware solution for access networks has generated a lot of speculation in the market. Is Netflix launching its own CDN? Why doesn’t Netflix need CDNs anymore? Is this the beginning of a shift in the relationship between content owners/publishers and the access networks? Although the real reasons for Netflix’s decision is their own, I definitely believe it is multi...

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Mobile Aps

Posted in Technology

With everyone building a mobile app these days (yes, I am even working on one for Dime Novel Publishing), it’s critical to separate yours from the pack. Obviously that can happen for a lot of different reasons but it all begins with a firm foundation of good design and objectives. GigaOm recently published a great article on seven factors to keep in mind when building a mobile app:

Understand the Potential of Mobile. Mobile shouldn’t be just a fancy gimmick for your company...

Are the Jellyfish Telling us Something?

Posted in Tumblog

I am very interested to hear what the eventual explanation of this is:

http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/177027/20110709/millions-jellyfish-invade-nuclear-reactors-japan-israel-2011-power-plant-shut-down-unusual-growth-tr.htm

Millions of jellyfish invade the cooling system around these nuclear powerplants forcing them to shut down. The pictures are amazing.

I wonder what else the jellyfish can force to shut down? A Justin Beiber concert?
