Awesome story about Dave Dahl and his “Dave’s Killer Bread.” Make the world a better place…one loaf at a time.

Sometimes We Forget About Our Humble Beginnings
Posted in Tumblog
We often think of Science Fiction as alien spaceships and deep-space adventures but as a genre, science fiction has existed long before that and really represent “imaginative literature.” Did you know that Mark Twain wrote some science fiction?
A recent event outside of Boston, Readercon, sought to both explore this and pay homage to the humble beginnings of such a worthwhile genre.

Who needs to travel to the national parks when you can see them from space? GeoEye (a company providing satellite- and aerial-based imagery services) has published a stunning set of pictures of America’s most notable national parks all taken from space. Wired has collected them:

Are You Having Conversations with your Data?
Posted in Technology
Big data. It seems that it’s on everyone’s tongue these days (perhaps like Cloud was last year).
What does “Big Data” even mean, though? More importantly, what does it mean for your business?
What is Big Data?
Wikipedia defines Big Data as, “a collection ofdata setsso large and complex that it becomes difficult to process using on-hand database management tools. The challenges include capture, storage, search, sharing, analysis, and visualization. The trend to larger data sets...
Can Amazon Change the Face of Education with the Kindle Fire?
Posted in Education
(Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images) Although I had originally believed that the iPad would do this, the price point (and the high-end computational specifications) has probably hampered it’s ability to gain traction in elementary, Jr. high, and high-schools. Sure, there are outlier educational institutions willing to pay for this but for the most part, I would say they shy away because of the price sticker.
But the Amazon Kindle Fire might be able to accomplish what Apple...

Mobile Web vs. Mobile Apps. Which Will Win?
Posted in Technology
For anyone that has spent at least a little bit of time on an iPad or iPhone has experienced the world of applications vs. the world of the Web. In many cases, the smartphone/smartdevice platform that Apple built has given rise to the “application experience:” network-aware/connected applications that provide a much more mobile-friendly/mobile-centric user experience than the web. Take Facebook for example. Their mobile application for both iOS and Android is far superior...
Remembering an Important Day in Human History: July 20, 1969
Posted in Tumblog
Conspiracy theorists aside, today is the anniversary of a hallmark in human history: the first step on the moon.
What makes this date significant, beyond the scientific achievement, is that it galvanized a nation in a very turbulent decade in U.S. History. Despite all the anti-war protests, despite the racial tensions, despite everything else, the U.S. came together as a nation, banded together the globe, as humanity broke free from the confines of its atmosphere and establish...

If you haven’t been to the SouthWest or experienced it raw, harsh, and unabashed beauty, you are truly missing something where skies can stretch for eternity punctuated by puffy white clouds or storms of ferocious intensity. Nat Geo recently put up a nice gallery of SouthWest images:

NatGeo has posted a great photo of lightning captured off Bermuda. Apparently, these kinds of thunderheads are common during this time of year on the island paradise.
