Therapeutic Homemaking | Clean with Me

Welcome to a new homemaking episode. This time we are talking about the therapeutic aspects of homemaking.

In today’s homemaking video, we are doing some necessary cleaning. Cleaning often feels daunting and undesirable, but if we change our thoughts on the subject, we can allow it to be therapeutic. When we think about it as homemaking and break that word down: making a home, it gives cleaning a higher purpose.
The word therapeutic implies healing. In medicinal terms, it refers to healing of an ailment. Certain treatments can be therapeutic. I often try to think of homemaking as a healing treatment. That’s because in general, it’s not the first thing I want to do each day. In fact, even after all these years, my body, mind, and sometimes soul, resists homemaking a bit. I might have fantasies of doing other things… anything really, other than wiping, cleaning, moping, doing dishes, and cooking. But wash the windows we must.

As I’ve mentioned many times I require shifts in my perspective, otherwise I won’t enjoy daily mundane tasks at all. So, I look at the therapeutic properties of cleaning and making a home. Let’s look at cleaning. How can that be therapeutic? Well, there is deep satisfaction to be found in cleaning a dirty space. It’s like righting a wrong... sorting something out. I focus on the tangible change that has taken place. Something was unsightly and now it’s beautiful. There is healing when you look at it like that. Making a smudged glass clear. Wiping the dirt off of an outside table. These things provide instant upgrades in satisfaction. I also take moments of deep appreciation for my space and focus on the beauty around me. This is why we should decorate our homes in a manner that pleases us. This also helps because when we finish cleaning, we enjoy our beautiful space even more.
Sometimes I’ll shut out the rest of the world and listen to music or an audiobook with my headphones. Other times I’ll allow myself to be present with my own thoughts. Sometimes I’ll have wild daydreams. Or cook up a great idea for a story. Or even write a poem in my head. Which does require me to run to my journal to write it down.

Now, is everything done perfectly and gracefully? No, my therapeutic cleaning usually involves doing what I can, when I can. But I try to make the experience as pleasant as possible. Many times, I’m in a rush. Or I’m exhausted and am trying to get things done quickly. Sometimes I’m able to go slow and I actually enjoy it. I focus on the sounds around me. There is healing in those sounds. Everyday sounds we take for granted can be as beautiful as a symphony.

And finally, I wanted to share this perspective with you. We all want to live beautifully at home. Each step we take in our daily homemaking tasks brings us closer to beautiful living. Pleasure should not escape our daily life. Whether we take pleasure in lighting a candle, enjoying a delicious luncheon, picking herbs from the garden, laying a tablecloth, arranging a flower bouquet, or ending the day with a cup of tea and a good book. There is pleasure to be found in the everyday and when our home is running optimally, we can elevate these daily pleasures. I hope you enjoyed today’s video.

Comment of the Week

Nadia T. writes, "I was given several embroidered tablecloths of various sizes and matching napkins for my first holy communion and for years I considered them too traditional and old fashioned and I stored them away. Decades later I realized how ridiculous it was not to use them! These vintage tablecloths are now used with love and often get compliments from our dinner guests. Thank you Jennifer for encouraging the art of a beautifully dressed table!!"
Nadia, I am so happy to read your comment. Most of us own beautiful things we don't use because we are "saving" them for special occasions. The realization that every day is special is cathartic. I'm so glad you are enjoying them now.

5 Ways to Be More Elegant

In today's video I'm sharing 5 ways to be more elegant. These are practical tips that can aid you in any social situation.

⚜️Be open and friendly
When meeting new people our body language should be open and friendly, not closed off and standoffish. A great reminder is to keep your phone out of sight so you don't use it as a crutch when you start to feel social anxiety. Giving eye contact, smiling, and listening, with genuine interest will take you far when wishing to express an air of elegance.

⚜️Be interesting

Once you do engage in conversation, have interesting things to say. Discuss topics you are passionate about and that can help you get to know the other person. Don't be afraid to discuss books, films, interesting places, and cuisines.

⚜️Go light on the makeup

For an optimal air of elegance, daytime makeup should be subtle and kept to a minimum. Daylight reveals all things and we do not want our faces caked with makeup. Get away with using only what you need to enhance your beauty. You can always turn the volume up on your makeup application after sunset, if desired.

⚜️Dress for elegance

You knew this tip was coming! Our first impressions of people are always visual impressions and what you wear is like your visual calling card to the world. Dress appropriately and dress for elegance, displaying your true style. When you get in the habit of doing this on a regular basis, not just when you "expect" to see people, you will naturally exude elegance.

⚜️Practice good deportment

Another visual cue lies in our posture. Good posture and deportment (how we sit, stand, and walk) makes up a lot of our elegant persona. If you are not in the habit of sitting, standing, and walking in an elegant fashion, it's time to practice on a daily basis. Practice at home. Walk elegantly up and down the stairs. Be conscious of how you sit and how your posture performs throughout the day. This will make you move gracefully and be a very flattering aspect of your visual first impression.

Comment of the WeekLinda A. writes, "My husband gave me great advice when someone asks either a rude or personal question: you respond by saying, “why do you ask”? This way you turn the tables toward them. 😉"
Linda, I find that this is a good response, however, they will likely say, "I just want to know", and you will be back at square one with deciding how to answer the personal question. Although this is a great way to bring awareness to the questioner. Thanks for watching!

5 Rude Questions and How to Respond | Etiquette Chat

In today's etiquette chat I'm sharing 5 commonly asked rude questions and how you should respond to them.

All of us have been asked a rude question at some point in our lives. When this happens, it takes you off guard. What did you do to merit this question? What is the questioner thinking? Do they even know they're being rude?

Many times the person asking the question does not have rude intentions (sometimes they do) so always try to remember that the other person finds you interesting and wants to know more.

I recently posed the question on my community tab: What is the rudest question you have ever received? The following 5 questions appeared regularly on that tab, showing that they are commonly asked questions.

⚜️When are you due? This was the most frequently asked rude question The Daily Connoisseur audience has been asked. An unassuming stranger asks when your baby is due. There's only one problem: you're not pregnant! Your response may vary depending on who is asking the question. A stranger in public merits no answer at all. If you're in a discussion with a friend, family member, or new acquaintance, you can simply shut it down by saying, "I'm not pregnant, thank you."

⚜️What do you do for a living? This question is often one of the first things asked upon meeting a new acquaintance in America. We are not defined by what we do for a living, however. That is just one small facet of who we are. A vague answer will suffice and then ask them about their hobbies and interests to change the subject. I learned this tip from etiquette expert, Myka Meier

⚜️Why are you so quiet? All introverts have been asked this question at some point in their lives. How do you respond to this without getting defensive? I like to compliment the other person and tell them I enjoy listening to them talk.

⚜️When are you going to have children? This question should never be asked, but sadly, is asked all the time. A simple "that's a private matter, thank you" will suffice.

⚜️What are you? This question is often asked of people who look ethnically ambiguous, like myself. People want to know our ethnic heritage. The bright side is that they are intrigued by us! Sometimes the way they ask the question can be rude, however. Watch today's video to hear the various ways in which you can answer.

Intermittent Fasting What I Eat in a Day | No Special Diet

I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day celebration yesterday. My day was glorious and full of lots of rest, which I greatly needed.

I'm sharing another intermittent fasting what I eat in a day video with you by request. I do the 16:8 method of intermittent fasting, which means I fast for 16 hours (I don't snack after dinner), and have an 8 hour eating window. I love the freedom that comes from this structured way of eating.

I like to film these videos on a whim to show you what I truly eat in a day without curating some spectacular menu for social media. This day found me at the end of the week when we were out of fruit and low on produce. This still gives you a realistic idea of what I typically eat in a day.

Nutrition Spotlight

Elaine Brisebois is a certified nutritionist and author of The Elegant Eating Handbook and I had the pleasure of asking her what her three best tips for women are regarding nutrition. I've had the pleasure of getting to know Elaine better through The Chic Society. Here is what Elaine had to share with The Daily Connoisseur audience:

1. Aim for diversity in your diet and center meals around minimally processed whole foods – which are rich in micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and other health-protective compounds like phytochemicals and fiber. Make veggies the starring performers!
 2. Focus on nourishing your body over depriving it. Find an eating approach that's both sustainable over the long term and gives you the results you want. Consider any "trade-offs" investments in your health rather than sacrifices.
 3. Aim for progress, not perfection. When you expect "imperfect" eating days as part of the process, you won't use them as an excuse to quit, throw in the towel, or "begin again on Monday." You can always make a better choice at your next meal.
Thank you, Elaine, for sharing your wisdom with us! You can find Elaine at elainebrisebois.com and on Instagram @elainebrisebois

Comment of the Week

Cassaundra writes, "I haven’t even watched your full video yet. I’m about to hit play. However, I’ve been following you for years. I’ve always enjoyed occasionally watching your stay at home mom day in the life type of videos, and I’m not even sure which one started this whole thing exactly, but as of late I became enamored with your content. You inspired me to catch up on all of my laundry. You inspired me to try to convince my husband to get rid of our television set and replace all of our subscriptions such as Netflix, and Disney+ with only one subscription: audible! 😂 (pray for me with that as he is not 100% on board... YET!) You inspired me to wake up early in the morning, at 5 AM before my family and actually go for a hike, get ready in the morning for the day, make breakfast, set the table, and clean all day, WITH GRATITUDE! I watched your most recent chic assignment and picked up modern etiquette made easy by Myka Meier at my local library and read the entire book yesterday, in one day! I feel that over the past two days I have become a COMPLETELY different daughter, wife, mother and friend. I feel for the longest time I was allowing myself to subconsciously subdue to “lethargy” and the feeling of being “overwhelmed” when all along I was just procrastinating and distracted. You called out my culprits! I can not express enough how much you have helped me and I praise the Lord for leading you to create your videos here on YouTube and leading me to be completely inspired and transformed by them. Thank you a million times over. 😭❤️"

Cassaundra, wow! Thank you your kind comment which encourages me to continue. I appreciate you!

I hope you enjoyed today's video. If you are doing intermittent fasting, please let us know how it's going. What has your progress been? Thank you and see you next time.

Comment of the WeekEmma writes, "Do you ever grow weary of your morning routine and change things up? I am struggling right now between learning to be content with my lifestyle and yet responding to a need for new routine."
Hi Emma, I do change my routine up, depending on the situation. When my youngest son is older, I won't be so concerned with not making noise in the morning so I might empty the dishwasher before they get up, for example. Also, one day if I'm able to work more in the afternoon, I might add exercise into my morning. I say switch it up if you're in a rut with it. Thanks for commenting!
I hope you enjoyed the ten-item wardrobe talk-through. Let us know how your wardrobe is coming along and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog.
