My Morning Routine

Mega Motivation continues this month as I share my morning routine with you. This is an on-going collaboration with the lovely Dawn from The Minimal Mom and many other talented YouTubers. We are all sharing our morning routines so click on this playlist link to see all of the other videos. I hope they leave you inspired to fine-tune your own morning routine.
As a work-at-home mother of small children, I find that I have to fit my work in the early morning hours. It would be nice to do an exercise routine, get some cleaning, and leisure time in, but I take each opportunity to work, which is what you will see in today's video.
I would love to know what your morning routine consists of. Do you have a leisurely and restorative morning? Or do you need to fit work into the early morning hours? How do you need to alter your routine to better fit your life? Let us know.

The Chic Assignment | May 2021

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for May, 2021.
⚜️Chic Assignment no. 1 Dvořák's Humoresque No. 7 in G-flat Major, Op. 101
We will be enjoying this vibrant performance by Yo Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman
Antonín Leopold Dvořák (1841 - 1904) was one of the first Czech composers to receive worldwide recognition. We will be learning more about Dvořák in the mid-month check-in.
⚜️Chic Assignment no. 2 Enjoy the poetry of William Wordsworth (1770 - 1850)

William Wordsworth was an English Romantic poet who lived from 1770 - 1850. You can check out much of his poetry free online or read a collected volume of his works.
Today we are reading, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud. We will learn more about Wordsworth in the mid-month check-in.
I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
⚜️Chic Assignment no. 3 Fine-tune your morning routine
I am sharing my morning routine next week and in my video will encourage you to tailor your morning routine to your most pressing needs. I hope you will enjoy that video and take a look at your morning routine in a new light.
⚜️Chic Assignment no. 4 Focus on good posture
If you think you're having déjà vu, you're not wrong. We have included posture practice a few times before in Chic Assignment history and there is a great reason why... we must constantly be aware of the state of our posture. It's a wonderful practice to polish our posture on a regular basis. For more, check out my book, Polish Your Poise with Madame Chic.
As always, the fifth assignment is to read interesting books. This month I'll be interviewing etiquette author, Myka Meier, founder of Beaumont Etiquette. If you would like to check out her lovey book, Modern Etiquette Made Easy, I highly recommend it.

Purl Two Together writes, "I love this video because I am disabled by a chronic illness and am inspired by my late nana who got dressed and did her face and hair even when she was dying of cancer. She always wanted to look her best. For me, even if I can't get dressed or do more than rest all day, putting on scent is the way I make myself feel better. But I love to pull on a dress, do a touch of makeup, pop earrings in and then I feel sooooooo much better but am still as comfortable as I'd be in my nightgown."
I love your comment and enjoyed reading about how your Nana inspired you. Thank you for sharing your tips with us!
I hope you enjoyed my ten-item capsule wardrobe lookbook for spring. I'll be going over the garments with you in greater detail in next week's talk-through.

Meditations on Spring Cleaning | The Grimy Places

Distraction It’s not the homemaking itself that’s hard,It’s lack of motivation.I know exactly the tasks to do,I set up my cleaning station.
But upon deciding the floors must be swept,Something curious will transpire:The strong desire to pick up my phone,And scroll like wildfire.
What exactly am I looking up?I’m not entirely sure. All I know is, it’s more attractive,Than the cleaning I am to endure.
So please don’t share your cleaning routine,I have mine very intact. The enemy to homemaking is distraction,That is the cold, hard fact.
- Jennifer L. Scott
Welcome back to The Daily Connoisseur. Our spring cleaning continues in today's video and this time, I’m tackling all of the difficult spots to clean in the home: the grimy, hidden (and not so hidden) places that have been lacking some serious attention.
As you heard in the opening poem I wrote for you, Distraction, we usually know exactly what to do as homemakers. We know what jobs need to be done. We know what to delegate, and we know the priority in which our tasks need to be finished.
Some people benefit from a cleaning routine. Others are more free-spirited with their cleaning approach. Some people have people help them clean their homes, others do all of the work themselves. We all have different experiences. One thing I know for sure, the biggest enemy to homemaking is distraction. So, as you tackle your own spring-cleaning projects, I hope today’s video not only accompanies you and provides you a sense of comfort, but acts as motivation, rather than distraction.
Sometimes we allow distraction to take over when we are faced with a job we really don’t want to do. This distraction is otherwise known as procrastination.
Charles Dickens wrote in David Copperfield, “My advice is, never do to-morrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time. Collar him!”
Did you hear that? Collar him, ladies and gentlemen. Procrastination is the thief of time. So, let’s tackle these grimy places in our home that require attention.
Do you know, as an introvert I rather enjoy being alone with my own thoughts. I don’t necessarily need music or an audiobook to work (although I do employ both often). But sometimes, all I need is to be alone with my thoughts and the very present sound of what I’m doing. It’s the sound. The natural noises that bring me into the present and remind me that I’m alive. We tend to anesthetize ourselves with noise. Silence has its place in our lives too.
When you’re in the silence, in the thick of it, here are a few things to focus on: gratitude for a place to live. Gratitude that you even have a home to clean. Gratitude for the ability to clean. Gratitude for the space to think…. To dream…
Once you build momentum… you find that you don’t want to stop. At that point an interruption or distraction is rather unwelcome. Wiping away the dust and grime is becoming therapeutic. Like I mentioned in the poem from the last video… a spring cleaning for my room, and a spring cleaning for my mind.
Capitalize on this. When you are in the flow, you’re actually in a rather creative state. It’s like when you’re writing a book. Every day when you face the page… It’s hard. And your mind invents other things you could do, like check the news or text a friend. But once you get started, when you get into that state… your headphones are on, your hands rapidly flying over the keys as you are in creative mode… you want it to never end.
End it must, but for the time being, any and all interruptions are very unwelcome. If you find this flow with your housework, consider it a very magical trip and enjoy the ride. You most likely will be interrupted. You can always invite the interrupter to help you. Or, if you manage to finish your to-do list, consider it a very successful venture.
Remember when you are finished for the day, to give yourself a little reward. A well-earned treat. The ritual of a cup of tea is transformative. And if you can capture the quiet… pour yourself a cup and settle down with a good book… And enjoy the magnificent feeling of a job well done.
Thank you for joining me for today’s video. Keep calm and remain classy, and I will see you in my next video.
Love, Jennifer

5 Ways to Avoid Nighttime Snacking when Intermittent Fasting

Overcoming dastardly nighttime snack cravings is one of the hardest parts (initially) of intermittent fasting. I do the 16:8 method, which means after dinner is finished (usually around 5:00 p.m. or 5:30 p.m.) I fast until until the following morning at 9:00 a.m. (or 9:30 a.m.). That means no late-night snacking.
After following the 16:8 method of intermittent fasting for one year, I lost 30 lbs. I am no longer in weight-loss mode but, rather, maintenance mode. My IF schedule now is much more relaxed. I have added cream into my morning coffee again (when I was looking to lose weight I drank black coffee before my eating window opened so as not to disrupt the fast) and don't adhere strictly to 16:8 everyday.
When I first started intermittent fasting, the hardest part was avoiding those powerful nighttime snack cravings. In today's video, I share 5 ways you can ride those out. In the video I discuss this article describing the difference between real hunger and appetite. That 9:00 p.m. hankering for a bowl of Cap'n Crunch is not usually hunger... especially if you've eaten a well balanced dinner a few hours before.
So how do you avoid the trap of returning to unhealthy nighttime snacks? After all, I am the author of Lessons from Madame Chic where Chapter 1 states that Snacking is So Not Chic.
My five tips are quite simple. I elaborating on them in today's video.
Distract yourself When those strong cravings hit during your fasting window, distract yourself with something else. Read a book or do something physical like gardening, cleaning, or knitting.
Drink tea or coffee Now in the evening, you are most likely not going to want caffeine. That's why I recommend a hot cup of herbal tea or even hot water. When you are able to hold and consume something comforting it can help as you push through junk food cravings.
Change your scenery Going on a walk cures so many things and it definitely serves as an excellent distraction. Make it a habit to go on an early evening walk or even walk around your garden at night. The fresh air will invigorate you.
Spend time with someone special Whether you play a card game with your family or chat to the neighbors on the porch, putting your attention on someone else is tremendously helpful here.
Go to sleep For those really late night cravings, the best course of action is going to bed. You'll wake up feeling refreshed and grateful you didn't have that 10 p.m. bowl of ice cream.
Today's video is brought to us by DoFasting, which is an Intermittent Fasting app. Code jlscott gives up to a 75% off discount.

Comment of the WeekRegarding my interview with Richard Thompson Ford, Mostly Caffeinated writes, "If a law professor found fashion important enough to write a whole book about it, perhaps we can put to rest all the "it doesn't matter" people now? 😁"
Yes! I plan to direct readers to that interview when they try to tell me that what we wear doesn't matter :)

Dress Codes with Richard Thompson Ford and Jennifer L. Scott

I had the pleasure of interviewing Professor Richard Thompson Ford, author of Dress Codes: How the Laws of Fashion Made History
This is an excellent read that gives so much insight into the history of fashion and how dress codes have truly shaped history. You can learn more about Professor Ford on his website dresscodes.org and find him on Instagram @professorofstyle

From the description on Amazon: In Dress Codes, law professor and cultural critic Richard Thompson Ford presents an insightful and entertaining history of the laws of fashion from the middle ages to the present day, a walk down history’s red carpet to uncover and examine the canons, mores, and customs of clothing—rules that we often take for granted. After reading Dress Codes, you’ll never think of fashion as superficial again—and getting dressed will never be the same.
I loved that the book really put things into perspective and made me challenge my own ideas about fashion and dress codes. You'll see some surprising insights throughout our interview.
I truly hope you enjoy my chat with Professor Ford.

Comment of the Week
Sylvia M. writes, "I think we should save space for mood as well. Some days a woman may feel romantic, or sensual, not sexy necessarily, another day edgy, yet another day more tailored. A woman's moods as well can be reflected through her wardrobe."
Hi Sylvia, I loved your comment. It's so true that we need to take our mood into account when we are dressing. I couldn't agree more!
I hope you enjoyed today's interview. Let us know what you thought of my conversation with Professor Ford. Your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog.

5 Things to Consider When Planning Your Spring Wardrobe

As I gather the pieces together for my spring wardrobe, I have been pondering some key questions with regard to wardrobe. In today's video we are going to look at these important questions to consider.
How would you dress if you faced no limitations? Many people wish to dress a certain way but place limitations on themselves, and end up settling for "no style" by wearing workout clothing everyday. How would you dress if those limitations didn't exist?
What is a style you've been longing to try? Similarly, many people long to try a specific style (like dresses or jumpsuits) but avoid doing so based on a certain issue. With jumpsuits, for example, many people use the "bathroom conundrum" as a reason to not try out the style. Some women avoid dresses so as not to draw too much attention to themselves. What if you tried a style you're longing to try this season? What would happen?

What colors do you feel beautiful in? Do you tend to get compliments when you wear a certain color? Try to wear that color more this spring – not to get more compliments, but because the origin of those compliments most likely arises from the flattering color of the garment.
What is your plan for accessories? I'm guessing you have some accessories in your wardrobe that you don't often wear. Go through your accessories and decide to wear them or toss them this season.
Does your wardrobe tell a story? If no, what story would you like it to tell? The next time you walk into a chic small boutique notice how all of the clothing is curated to tell a story. Everything seems to go with everything else. This doesn't mean that all of the pieces are matchy-matchy, but that they tell a style story. You can achieve that with your wardrobe too.

Comment of the WeekValerie writes, "Thank you for this timely video. So many adults lose their passion as life progresses, and I know I did. I now know that one has to take tine to tend to one's needs and passions. I worked at a very demanding job for 20+ years, and I lost myself. I am slowly gaining a perspective of who I am, and reuniting with my passions. I feel this may be a positive outcome from the pandemic--well maybe for me."
Hi Valerie, it does take time to tend to your needs and passions. I hope you are able to gain new perspective after retiring. We are rooting for you!
