Professors Who Deliberately Shake the Faith of Our Children

“What should teachers say to religious students who doubt evolution?” That’s the title of a recent Scientific American article—and considering the publication, we know already that the answer will be in support of evolutionary ideas!

The author, John Horgan, who is the Director of the Center for Science Writings at Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, answered this question with (unsurprisingly) an affirmation of evolutionary ideas. But what I thought was important to point out was his clear mission to challenge students’ religious beliefs.

Now, Horgan teaches college classes on topics in science, the humanities, and social sciences. He wrote the following about one of his class assignments:

I asked both classes to write a paper on the following question: Why do you think Darwin’s theory of evolution still encounters so much opposition today? I encouraged the students to personalize their responses—that is, to discuss how they reconciled their own faith, if any, with evolutionary theory.

Horgan’s entire assignment is clearly biased toward evolutionary ideas (and as I discuss in my bestselling book The Lie: Evolution/Millions of Years, everyone has a bias). You see, his questions assume the truth of millions of years and evolution, and his follow-up statement assumes that students will have found a way to mix evolutionary ideas with their faith.

Well, Horgan read the papers and found that a significant portion of his students (sadly, not the majority) found it impossible to mix evolution with Scripture. Of course, this led him to ask the question: “What should teachers say to religious students who doubt evolution?”—and to supply his own evolutionary answers.

In the process of reaching an answer, Horgon lists all the supposed evidence for evolution, while also admitting that there are many questions the evolutionary worldview cannot answer. But his conclusion is revealing: “I feel a bit queasy, I admit, challenging their faith, from which some of them derive great comfort. . . . On the other hand, if I don’t prod these young people into questioning their most cherished beliefs, I’m not doing my job, am I?”

So, Horgon’s agenda is clear: he wants students to question and ultimately reject the Bible’s history of the universe. You see, this is just another example of the challenges our children will likely face when they enter college (or even at a public high school). Many professors are out to deliberately shake the faith of our children, which is why our children need to learn how to answer these skeptical questions and attacks. Parents, if you’re in the process of choosing a college for your child to attend, I urge you to read our book Already Compromised (of which I am a co-author), and to check out our list of colleges that have affirmed in writing the Answers in Genesis statement of faith at www.CreationColleges.org.

As sad it as is, the truth is that even at many so-called Christian colleges, students will encounter professors like Horgan. Your college-age children, whether they realize it or not, are still quite impressionable, still actively forming their beliefs and values, still deciding what they will accept and what they will reject. Be sure you continue to feed their hunger for truth with God’s truth as they move away from home.

Accordingly, through the next two years we will be launching many initiatives to reach children and teens with the truths of the Bible, and to rescue them from the secularists. The overall theme will be “Standing Our Ground, Rescuing Our Kids.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying—including praying for our young people,

Ken

“That Trip Did Wonders”

Many types of visitors come to the Creation Museum. Some we really can’t tell you about because, sadly, in this increasingly secularized culture, secularists would cause problems for them if they found out the visitors’ identities.

Recently, a number of young people (who are considered “troubled” children with great needs) were able to come to the Creation Museum. One of the teachers who brought them sent us this letter from one of the students after their visit:

All I can say is praise the Lord! And I wanted our supporters to know that there are many other young people like this who have been influenced greatly by the Lord using the Creation Museum.

It’s sad that so many young people (like those in our public schools) will go in busloads to secular natural history museums that present evolution as fact and basically indoctrinate people in atheism—but most of these young people are not allowed to come to the Creation Museum or the ACLU will sue the public schools involved.

But despite all this, God works in wonderful ways to enable such people—as the young person who wrote this letter—to be able to come and be blessed.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken

USA Will Become Like the UK—The Battle for the Culture

The battle for the culture in the UK (United Kingdom) continues to be lost from a Christian perspective! A recent article reported that Prime Minister David Cameron came out in support of same-sex couples being able to marry in UK churches (UK registrars currently cannot legally officiate same-sex marriage ceremonies), and a bill to that effect will be voted on in 2013. (Read the full report at this link.) You see, the UK has been in a downward spiral for years as far as the church and biblical authority are concerned. I’ve given these statistics many times before—church attendance in the UK is very low (from around 60% generations ago to 6.3% according to a recent report in the Telegraph).

Well, David Cameron’s view on gay “marriage” is being considered a historic moment, because “it means that all three party leaders now support a historic equality reform.” And sadly, Cameron is violating the views of half his party by taking such a stance on such “marriages” in churches—all because “he believes the public are relaxed about the idea.” Since a majority of the people seems to be in favor of gay “marriage” in churches, Cameron wants to support it.

Now, in my book The Lie: Evolution/Millions of Years, I wrote a section explaining why we cannot base our morality on man’s opinion. I’ve included it here because I believe it addresses the major problems with what is happening in the UK (and is happening here in the USA also):

What would happen if your son came home and said, “Dad, I am going to marry Bill tomorrow”? Sadly, such is becoming more commonplace these days.

You would likely say, “You can’t do that, son! It’s just not done!”

What if your son replied, “Yes it is, Dad. There are even churches that will marry us”? If you were not a Christian, what would you say to your son? Can you have any basis, any justification, for insisting that he should not live a homosexual lifestyle if he wants to?

When attempting to justify why they do or do not have a particular belief, many people today often have opinions rather than reasons. It is sometimes interesting to watch interviews on television news programs. I recall one program on Australian television years ago in which people were interviewed and asked to express their opinions concerning a government department’s ruling to grant homosexual couples benefits similar to those received by married heterosexual couples. Some of the opinions expressed went like this: “It’s not right.” “It goes against my grain.” “It’s wrong.” “It’s not normal.” “It’s bad.” “It shouldn’t happen.” “It’s not good.” “It shouldn’t be allowed.” “Why shouldn’t they?” “People can do what they like!” Many other similar expressions were stated. But because such statements are only opinions, and thus subjective, we have seen the change that has occurred in the culture as gay marriage and the homosexual lifestyle has become more and more accepted by the culture as a whole throughout our Western world.

The change caused by following opinions in regard to the homosexual lifestyle is very evident in American culture. More and more states are embracing gay marriage and passing laws that are favorable to it. But this sort of thinking has also infiltrated the church as some Christians have tried to argue based simply on opinions rather than on the absolute authority of Scripture.

You see, man’s opinions change, but the Word of God does not. Scripture is the consistent standard of morality (Romans 1:24–27). There is some concern in the UK that if a law is made allowing same-sex couples to marry in churches, then those churches that still oppose gay “marriage” may be forced to perform these ceremonies. Now, Cameron has said that won’t happen. But you know, it wouldn’t surprise me if the UK isheaded that way. One of Cameron’s Conservative Party colleagues even expressed this same concern, “Despite the PM’s assurance, the redefinition of marriage—because of the European Convention on Human Rights—will force churches to marry same-sex couples.”

And sadly, if the decline of the culture continues in the US, we’ll look a lot like the UK before long. I urge you to read my book The Lie, because it outlines what is happening to our nation, which was once permeated by Christian thinking but becomes more anti-Christian each day. You see, if we don’t want to lose the culture, then we have to capture the hearts and minds of our children and stand firmly on the Word of God.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken

The “Christ-less” Christmas Carol

This past week, I noticed that the well-known film The Christmas Carol (there are different versions of the movie) was shown on television, as it is usually broadcast each year at this time.

It is what you would call a “clean” movie with a touching story, and we all know that it’s fiction. Nonetheless all movies convey a message. As Christians, we need to be very careful to ensure that our children understand that the message of this movie, though quite tender in what happened to Tiny Tim and his family, falls short on some very important aspects.

One of our AiG friends wrote the following item about the famous 1951 movie version. His commentary, which we have slightly edited, is titled “The ‘Christ-less’ Christmas Carol.”

On December 19, 1843, Charles Dickens published his famous novel about Christmas entitled The Christmas Carol. It was made into a well-known movie in 1951 and has become a Christmas tradition that is shown on TV many times each December. Recently, Disney released an animated version of this novel that is a triumph of computer-generated graphics; the animation is very well done. Another version was even made with the Muppets.

In the novel, Dickens depicts Scrooge going through a life-changing experience as the result of seeing three apparitions—the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future.

In spite of its title, I suggest the book contains an unbiblical philosophy about life. Let’s consider some important points.

First, there is no reference to the Bible and the way of salvation provided for us through the life and death of Jesus Christ. There is only an allusion to God by Tiny Tim at the end of the novel. This in itself should raise suspicions about the intent of the author, for the novel is indeed “Christ-less.”

The novel gives the idea that you may be able to have salvation by seeing or experiencing something. The Bible however, says that salvation is only through Jesus. “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’” (John 14:6 ). Scripture also states, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).  The world would like to believe there are many ways to heaven, but according to the Bible, Jesus Christ is the only way.

Too many people are waiting for some experience or feeling before they will simply take God at His Word and accept through faith the salvation which He freely provides. They have the nerve to dictate to God how He is to dispense His mercies to them! Like the man at the pool of Bethesda, they will wait for a very long time and likely will wait themselves into hell unless God intervenes. (John 5:2–5 ).

The way of salvation as laid down in the novel for Scrooge is really a “works-based” salvation. If you do enough good deeds at the end of your life, these somehow will atone for all the bad deeds you did when you were younger. This is biblically wrong for several reasons.

First, this belief contradicts what the Apostle Paul wrote: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8) and “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).

Just try this plea on a human judge! For example, suppose a convicted bank robber pleaded that he should not be punished because he had not robbed a bank in years and had been most generous helping others with the money he had stolen. Just like God, a human judge requires payment for what is past. No amount of good works in the present can atone for past sins, as the Scripture plainly states, “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5).

Only when we are covered in the righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ will God see us as perfect—but only perfect through what Christ did on the Cross in atoning for our sins. Consider this verse: “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels” (Isaiah 61:10).

In addition, God does not grade on a curve. He will accept perfection and nothing less. “Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48).  If you only break one of God’s laws, then you are already guilty and destined for eternal separation from God in hell. “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them” (Galatians 3:10). Likewise, “whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all” (James 2:10 ). Remember, Adam only had to commit one sin to be expelled from paradise, and his rebellion ruined the entire human race. Satan only had to think one evil thought before he and all his hosts were eternally judged guilty.

Biblical Christianity differs from all other religions, for they all say “do and live,” but only Christianity says “live and do.” Christians do not work to earn their salvation because that has been accomplished by Jesus Christ, but they do good works out of gratitude for the free salvation they have already received from God through faith and in obedience to the instructions for Christians in God’s Word.

The novel by Dickens is an interesting literary work and is of historical interest about the conditions in England during the Victorian era. It should be treated as such and no more. Such books (and movies based on novels) can be entertaining to watch, but we need to make sure those watching them do not get influenced with wrong ideas that can be conveyed by such media.

The real “Christmas carol” is found only in the Bible, when the angels sang to the shepherds announcing the birth in Bethlehem of the Savior, who is Christ the Lord. There never has been—and never will be—any salvation for us apart from faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ, which He accomplished on the Cross. In whom or what are you trusting today for your eternal salvation?

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken

Happy Birthday AiG

Today is the official birthday of Answers in Genesis-USA. Although AiG published its first newsletter and held its first seminar in early 1994, AiG filed its incorporation papers in late 1993. Today as we mark the nineteenth anniversary of a biblical creation and apologetics ministry that God has been blessing mightily in the USA and abroad, I wanted to have you discover for yourself how God has blessed the proclamation of the creation/gospel message since 1993, including through the five-year-old Creation Museum—read our ministry’s history (and see some historical photos) at www.answersingenesis.org/about/history.

In a future blog, I will share what’s in store for 2013—including new projects to share the creation/gospel message. Our theme for the next two years will be “Standing Our Ground, Rescuing Our Kids” (based on Galatians 1:4). We want to counter the increasing aggressiveness by secular humanists who want to prevent children from discovering the truths found in the Bible—including about creation—and want them to accept evolution. See my previous blog post that announced this theme.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken

Secularists Are Targeting the Youth!

In October, as many of you know, we released the new Answers in Genesis theme for the coming year. There is an increasing emphasis by secular evolutionary humanists to try to stop kids from hearing the truth about creation and to teach them evolution/millions of years as fact. So we decided that the theme for the next two years should center around reaching the current generation of children—and coming generations—and doing so in a very active way. The theme is “Standing Our Ground” and “Rescuing Our Kids.”

Well, recently, I came across one online evolution forum called “Darwin Central.” Their byline was very telling: “Corrupting the World’s Youth Since 1859.” You know, secularists often accuse biblical creationists of various forms of “child abuse” because we teach that the biblical account of creation is the truth. But even though the above byline is clearly written tongue-in-cheek, it really reflects the mission of secularists. They want evolution and millions of years taught as fact, and they are totally intolerant of creationism—of God’s Word. I’ve said before that even Hitler knew the importance of winning over the youth in a culture when he said, “He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future!”

More and more, we see legislation in our Western world designed to protect the teaching of evolution so generations of kids can be indoctrinated by the state in a secular anti-God religion. A recent news item from the BBC explained how funding for free schools in the UK would be tied to the teaching of evolution as fact (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-20547195). We are going to see this happen more in America, too—unless God’s people return to God’s Word and stand up for the truth beginning in Genesis. This is a wakeup call to Christians!

Here in America, children’s TV host Bill Nye “the science guy” has been very active in opposing biblical creation this past year, claiming that creationism is “not appropriate for children.” (You can view my two YouTube responses to Nye, “Ken Ham Responds to Bill Nye ‘The Humanist Guy’” and “Ken Ham Responds to Intolerant Bill Nye Defenders.”)

You see, there’s a common theme with all of the above examples—the secularists are targeting our children! They know that if they can win the hearts and minds of this generation, they’ll win the culture. What’s worse is that not only do we have to work hard not to let our kids be led astray by the anti-God teaching of the secularists, we have to work hard not to let them be led astray by compromising church leaders. Televangelist Pat Robertson said recently, in defense of millions of years, “And so if you fight revealed science you’re going to lose your children, and I believe in telling them the way it was.” (Read Dr. Tommy Mitchell’s analysis of Robertson’s remarks at this link.)

Sadly, what Robertson fails to understand is that it is precisely this kind of compromise on the authority of God’s Word that is causing our children to leave the church. Parents, I urge you to stand your ground and help stem the tide of the generational loss of biblical authority. Equip your children to answer the skeptical questions of the age, using resources like our New Answers Books series and New Answers Books for Kids series. That way, they’ll be more likely to remain strong in their faith and not falter under the pressure of an ever-increasing godless culture.

And please, pray for and support AiG in whatever ways you can as we do our best to help rescue the children from this present evil age.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken

You Are Worthy

For this Christmas day, I thought I would just share two verses of Scripture about the Lord Jesus Christ:

You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created. (Revelation 4:11)

And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.” (Revelation 5:9)

He is worthy because He created all things. He is worthy because He was slain.

Wonderful verses to contemplate on Christmas!

Museum Testimonial—Five Days Here and Better than Disney World!

Today is our free day at the Creation Museum. Through 3 p.m. today, we are offering free museum admission. This gift to the community is meant to be a reminder of the greatest Christmas gift of all—the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, our Creator and Savior.

The following family, which included three children, recently spent five days (that’s right, five days—there is so much to see and do here!) at the Creation Museum. While here, they told a staff member that coming to the Creation Museum was better than going to Disney World. Later they wrote to us:

Our family would like to express our thankfulness to God for all of the wonderful people at the Creation Museum.  For Christmas this year, our children requested a family trip rather than presents under the tree. But not a trip to Disney World or some other theme park decorated with candy canes, tinsel, snowflakes, and Santa Claus. No, our three children wanted to go to the Creation Museum instead.

Five days flew by as we experienced the Planetarium, Men in White, the new “Lucy” exhibit, “Verbum Domini” [rare Bible manuscripts on display], great speakers from AiG, great food at Noah’s Café, and classes with Dr. Menton (“Formed to Fly” and “Three Ways to Make an Ape Man”).   Every experience testified to the truth of the Bible, God’s creation, and the lordship of Jesus Christ.  This was reflected most in the staff – gracious, kind, helpful, friendly, and full of good will.

Having recently upgraded our museum pass to a five-year membership, the staff graciously invited us to attend an early session for “Christmas Town”.  At a time when so many others are trying to remove Christ from Christmas and to take the Holy out of the Holidays, it was such a blessing to experience.

Thank you for this teachable moment to remind my children that the greatest gift of all did appear at the foot of a tree.  Not a tree shaped like a triangle but a cross.  A gift wrapped in a tomb that only God could open.   And He did.

Thank you for this special Christmas gift.

– The S..B family, northern Alabama

Our free Christmas Town program—Bible-based dramas, tens of thousands of bright lights, a live Nativity, a sneak preview of a part of our future full-size Noah’s Ark, and much more—continues this Friday evening and Saturday evening. Last Saturday evening, we had almost 4,000 people turn out!

So don’t let Christmas end on December 25—come out to our Cincinnati/northern Kentucky area this Friday and Saturday and celebrate an extended Christmas.  For information on the free Christmas Town program, see http://creationmuseum.org/christmas/.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

December 22, 2012

Now It’s the “Queen James Bible”!

A pro-homosexual group (which to my knowledge has remained anonymous) recently released a Bible “translation” that they say they’ve “edited to make homophobic interpretations impossible.” This new “Bible” is based on the 1769 King James Bible. Now, the editors have called their new translation the Queen James Bible (QueenJamesBible.com) because they claim that King James’s alleged homosexual acts led people in his time to refer to him as “Queen James.” Whether or not that claim is true, this group has made a mockery of a beloved Bible translation and mutilated the Word of God to support their own anti-God agenda.

Now, the editors make the claim that “the Bible says nothing about homosexuality”—which is absolutely false and contradicts their own “translation” of Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13. We have articles available on our website that deal with this issue. I encourage you to visit www.AnswersinGenesis.org and read them for yourself.

So, how do the editors get around the clear strictures against homosexual behavior in Scripture? Well, they claim, “the Bible can be interpreted in different ways, leading to what we call ‘interpretive ambiguity.’” Basically, they believe that we can never understand the true meaning of anything in the Bible because it was written so long ago—except that these editors seem to believe they’ve found the most accurate translation of the passages on homosexuality. This is totally inconsistent with their view of hermeneutics!

Of course, hermeneutics is the technical term for Bible interpretation. The hermeneutic we use at AiG is the historical-grammatical method, which really means we read the Bible “naturally,” according to the genre of the passage. For example, the creation account of Genesis is historical narrative, so we read it as history. For more on the historical-grammatical approach, read Tim Chaffey’s series “How Should We Interpret the Bible?” Part 1 and Part 2.

Based on their faulty method of interpretation, these editors changed some key verses to try to claim that homosexual behavior is not a sin. I won’t discuss every single change, but I think it’s important to highlight one of the major flaws in how they approach God’s Word.

You see, the editors’ primary tactic is to paint many of the passages that condemn homosexual behavior as being written in the context of idolatry. For example, in the KJV, two passages in Leviticus are clear on this issue:

Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. (Leviticus 18:22)

If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. (Leviticus 20:13)

Now, these two verses are in chapters that list many condemned behaviors, such as bestiality, incest, and child sacrifice. But you see, the editors already believe that homosexual behavior is not a sin. Even though there is absolutely no manuscript evidence to support their “translation,” they changed these two verses as follows (I’ve bolded the additions):

Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind in the temple of Molech; it is an abomination. (Leviticus 18:22, Queen James Version)

If a man also lie with mankind in the temple of Molech, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death. (Leviticus 20:13, QJV)

I should point out that not only is it wrong to make these verses solely about idolatry, but it’s also important to know that God had already forbidden idolatry in the strictest terms (Exodus 20:3–6). But if they are going to be consistent, then these editors have to apply this method of interpretation to every behavior listed in these chapters. If homosexual behavior is acceptable outside of ritual pagan worship, then that would mean that incest, bestiality, child sacrifice, and a number of other behaviors are perfectly acceptable as long as idolatry is not involved! The editors make a similar claim with Romans 1—which is very clear on the sin of homesexual behavior.

Of course, the above are just a few in a whole series of issues with the Queen James Bible’s translations. And the editors conclude their list of changes by writing, “The Bible is still filled with inequality and even contradiction . . . No Bible is perfect, including this one.” Basically, the editors show that they don’t believe the Word of God is inerrant in its original manuscripts or is understandable today. And what they’ve done is more than just editing—they’ve rewritten the Bible!

You know, this isn’t the first attempt sinful man has made at “editing” the Bible. In fact, the very first example of “rewriting” God’s Word is in Genesis 3, where the devil tempted Eve with “Did God really say . . . ?” Sadly, Adam and Eve really “rewrote” God’s Word—and look what happened as a result!

These people who have mutilated God’s Word for their own anti-God agenda will have to answer to God for that one day—and there will be a day of reckoning! I couldn’t imagine standing before the Creator God and saying, “I hope you liked how we rewrote your holy Word. We just felt like those verses about homosexual behavior were unfair and outdated. We knew better than you did, and you obviously didn’t want us to trust you in this area.”

I encourage you to read our Pocket Guide to Social Issues  for the biblical viewpoint on homosexuality and other issues.

Ken
