Hobby Lobby and Obamacare
Many of you have been following the lawsuit that the Hobby Lobby corporation has filed against the Obama administration. Under the new health care mandate, Hobby Lobby, a retail chain of arts/crafts stores, is required to offer health insurance that provides abortion-inducing drugs (abortifacients) to its employees. (For a detailed discussion of how so-called “emergency contraceptives” work, in contrast to ordinary contraceptive pills, read this News to Note article by Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell: www.answersingenesis.org/articles/2013/01/12/news-to-note-01122013#five).
Now, the owners of Hobby Lobby are standing their ground and have sued the federal government. Hobby Lobby founder and CEO David Green and his family have said that by being forced to offer insurance that provides abortifacients, their religious beliefs are being violated. The fines for not complying with the Obamacare mandate are about $1.3 million per day. Hobby Lobby asked that any fines be delayed until the court proceedings were over, but Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor denied the request.
A recent news report (www.foxnews.com/on-air/special-report-bret-baier/blog/2013/01/11/hobby-lobby-vs-health-care-law) said that Hobby Lobby has found a way to delay by a few months the January 1 requirement to comply with the health care mandate. This is good news for Hobby Lobby—but it still doesn’t solve the issue of what’s at stake with regard to religious freedom in the US.
Sadly, what is happening to Hobby Lobby doesn’t bode well for Christians in general. Joel Belz in World magazine (www.worldmag.com/mobile/article.php?id=24863) recently wrote, “If all this is not a blatant denial of an American citizen’s freedom to exercise his or her deeply help religious beliefs, it’s hard to imagine what the federal government might do to be offensive.” And that’s a legitimate concern to have.
You see, if Hobby Lobby is forced by the federal government to act in ways that violate the owners’ convictions concerning the authority of Scripture, what will stop the government from forcing churches and individual believers to act against what God’s Word says?
Scripture tells us that we’ll experience persecution for the sake of Christ:
If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, “A servant is not greater than his master.” If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. (John 15:18–21)
I applaud the Green family’s bold stand for the truth of God’s Word when it comes to the lives of unborn babies, and their stand for God’s Word will likely come at great cost to their organization. Please pray for them as they publicly stand for their biblical convictions. I pray that other Christians will be prepared to stand as they have done.
Actually, all companies and organizations are affected by this Obamacare mandate. Answers in Genesis is also working with our legal representatives to do what needs to be done legally in regard to this vital issue.
Please pray for AiG and other organizations as we also have to confront this sad issue head on.

A Time to Reflect
Well, Tuesday, January 22, is the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade pro-abortion court decision in America. It’s certainly not a time to celebrate—but it is a time to reflect on why around 54 million babies have been murdered in their mother’s womb since this shocking anti-God decision by the Supreme Court of the USA in 1973.
You see, when God created Adam and Eve, the first humans, He declared the following:
Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28)
Our God is a God of life.
And Scripture tells us clearly that life begins from the moment of fertilization (Psalm 139:13–14; Jeremiah 1:5). But what has happened in our culture?
The culture has embraced death. As the total number of abortions since the decision of Roe v. Wade continues to mount (over 54 million murdered unborn babies at last count), we see more and more clearly that we are living in a culture of death. And you know, Scripture warns us about a culture that replaces good with evil:
Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! (Isaiah 5:20)
In this day and age, it seems animals (that are not made in the image of God) have more rights than human beings!
I urge you to read our lead article on the website today, written by staff member Tim Chaffey (AiG-U.S.), reflecting on how abortion (the legalized murdering of children) has affected the nation, and what the church must do to influence the culture and be the salt and light it should be.

Roe v. Wade Month—Part Two
Yesterday, I wrote about the claim of a Time magazine article (which is appearing just before the 40th anniversary of the legalization of abortion by the U.S. Supreme Court): “40 Years Ago, Abortion-Rights Activists Won an Epic Victory with Roe v. Wade—They’ve Been Losing Ever Since.” Abortion statistics, sadly, indicate that this claim is not entirely true. Really, abortions remain at more than 1.2 million per year in the U.S.
Now, Dr. Al Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has written a response to Time’s claim, and his article is worth reading. But I want to highlight an important point that Dr. Mohler makes, as it relates to the culture’s rejection of God’s Word and the battle before us as believers.
Dr. Mohler writes, “In truth, America—and countless individual Americans—have a divided mind on abortion and the sanctity of human life. We are a long way from a national consensus that could be reasonably and honestly described as pro-life. Four decades after its thunderous arrival, Roe v. Wade still stands, and the death count rises. Restricting the murder of the unborn is not enough. Even reversing Roe v. Wade will not be enough. Our task is to reach the hearts and minds of America with the message that every life is a divine gift, and that abortion is not the only grave threat to that gift. Forty years after Roe, that challenge still looms before us.”
You see, we can’t simply change laws—abortion is only a symptom of a bigger problem. We have to reach the culture with the truth of God’s Word. Really, the culture, including many churches and church leaders, has lifted up man’s word over God’s Word. They believe that their fallible, changing opinions are more reliable than the Bible.
And evolutionary ideas have contributed greatly to the diminished view of life in Western culture—the view that modern man supposedly evolved over millions of years of death and suffering. It has destroyed the view that man was specially created by God, in His image, on Day Six of Creation Week. In evolutionary thinking, there is no room for God—and theistic evolutionists have to work very hard to find a way in their attempts to put God in the process that secularists use to try to explain life without God!
So, how can we turn the tide against abortion? Well, first, we must derive our definition of life from God’s Word. We can’t simply say abortion is wrong. We have to start with God’s Word:
For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. (Psalm 139:13–14)
“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” (Jeremiah 1:5)
Our God makes clear in these passages that every person, including unborn babies, is known by Him and is human from the time of fertilization. You see, ultimately the only way to turn the tide is to restore faith in God’s Word as the absolute authority in every area of life, including faith, history, and science.
We also know what God’s Word states concerning the murder of another human being.
For more on the biblical view of when life begins and the issue of abortion, read Dr. Tommy Mitchell’s article When Does Life Begin? and Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell’s article Flesh and Blood.
Can you imagine being one of the Supreme Court Justices in the USA who voted for Roe v. Wade standing before God one day to give an account as to why they were a part of the deliberate brutal murder of millions and millions of children. I could not imagine being in one of those judge’s shoes. They may be the highest court of this land right now—but one day each one will answer to the highest court where the righteous judge rules and will call them to account!
By the way, Friday, the lead article on our website will be another commentary on the significance and legacy of Roe v. Wade. Check back then.

Roe v. Wade Month—Part One
The 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade is this month (the case was decided on January 22, 1973), and Time magazine’s cover story for the January 14, 2013, issue claims, “40 Years Ago, Abortion-Rights Activists Won an Epic Victory with Roe v. Wade—They’ve Been Losing Ever Since.” But how true is this claim?
You know, there are many states that have passed laws requiring women seeking an abortion to first submit to a waiting period, counseling, parental consent (in the case of underage girls), or even an ultrasound. You can view a chart from our Answers magazine that details which states have which requirements, as well as any contested state laws, on this article.
Sadly, however, the number of abortions performed each year seems to be remaining consistent. You see, the National Right to Life’s statistics show that since Roe v. Wade was passed, more than 1.2 million abortions have been performed in the U.S. each year. The total number of abortions performed since Roe v. Wade is more than 54 million. That’s 54 million human beings who have been brutally murdered before birth—since 1973. (You can find these statistics at this link.) By the way—that’s almost three times the population of my homeland of Australia—really puts it in perspective, doesn’t it?
Now, last year, Answers magazine published an interview with Tim Wildmon, president of the American Family Association. He explained clearly why Christians should speak out against abortion:
In 1973, when Roe v. Wade legalized abortion, the court said that if it could ever be proved that the unborn is a person, it would be a gamechanger. That’s why AFA has been promoting personhood amendments. We want to see that question come before the U.S. Supreme Court again now that we have this new medical technology. . . . We need to keep our hands to the plow. There’s nowhere else for us to go to start over; this is it. We cannot abandon our role in the culture, including politics and government. . . . The main thing is that we shouldn’t give up or take the attitude that our vote doesn’t matter because to disengage or not participate or take a fatalistic attitude is to give up on God. God can send revival to our land.
And while I agree that believers must not abandon their place in our culture and that we must oppose abortion, I believe abortion is only the symptom of a bigger problem. For many years, I’ve said that even if we managed to change the laws about abortion, the culture would just change them back, if it continues to look to man’s word for ultimate authority instead of God’s Word.
You see, evolutionary ideas have destroyed the basis for the dignity of human life, which says that man is made in God’s image.
Think about it—if you get rid of spare cats, then why not get rid of spare kids? After all, we’re just animals in this evolutionary world! Sadly, that’s really what generations of kids are being taught.
By way of contrast, the evolutionary contention that man is only an animal provides no moral basis to oppose the murder of the unborn.
So, what can we do to stop abortion? That’s for tomorrow’s blog post.
For more information on the issue of abortion, I encourage you to read Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell’s (AiG–U.S.) articles:
Semantics Don’t Change Truth
Embryo Protection

Answers for an Atheist!
I heard so many special testimonies from our time at the 412 Church in San Jacinto, California, this past weekend. By the way, the name of this southern California church—which is a part of the Calvary Chapel association of congregations—is spoken as “four twelve,” from the chapter and verse 4:12 found in the books of Ephesians, Acts, and Hebrews. Here are some sample testimonies from the past two days:
A young man told me he is an atheist. He then came across The New Answers Book 1 (the biggest-selling creation apologetics book in the world), and he read it through twice. He said the Lord used those answers to help him come to the point of committing his life to Christ. He told me he now wanted to obtain The New Answers Book 2 and The New Answers Book 3 .
A father of young children told me he still remembers hearing me speak when he was six years old. He has never forgotten the question I teach kids to politely ask when they hear people talk about evolution and millions of years: “Were you there?” He told me he and his wife are now bringing up their children on AiG resources, and they attended the school assemblies today with their children.
A mother of young children told me she was greatly affected by what I taught her over 25 years ago. She has never forgotten that, and she is now bringing up her children on AiG resources so they are equipped with answers.
I had so many other testimonies like these—the Lord is good! Thank you Lord. It’s especially encouraging to hear how young people are being impacted by the creation/gospel message. AiG’s ministry theme this year is “Standing Our Ground, Rescuing Our Kids,” and so I was especially blessed to hear these testimonies in San Jacinto.
Here are some photographs taken during the conference in San Jacinto:

Princeton Student Lies About the Creation Museum
I recently came across a blog that was full of outright lies about our Creation Museum.
A Princeton University student, Tyler Simko, who appears to be majoring in physics at the school, authored the post for his blog, Quantumaniac. (Ironically, this was the university that produced the cofounder of the modern creationist movement, Dr. John Whitcomb.) Now, while this blogger writes about what we teach in the Creation Museum, his post shows no evidence that he has ever even bothered to visit the Creation Museum!
Simko makes a number of outrageous claims about the Creation Museum.
First, he says we teach that “the reason there are different races is because of birth defects which caused early black people’s skin to discolor.” That’s outrageously false. Moreover, I have coauthored an entire book with Dr. Charles Ware on the issue of race called One Race, One Blood. In that book, in several articles on our website, and in videos, we teach that man is descended from a single couple, Adam and Eve, who had all the genetic material in them to produce all the different shades of skin we see today. We explain that there is one basic color for humans because of the pigment melanin. We believe (and it fits with our understanding of genetics) that they were a middle brown shade, and the Tower of Babel resulted in a sorting out of genetic material. This produced the many skin tones we see today, which are all really just varying shades of brown. There is only one race—the human race—and even secularists are beginning to agree!
Actually, an exhibit at the Creation Museum explains all of the information above about the origin of the people groups. Surely if the blogger had been to the museum or had read articles on our website, he would have known not to write the nonsense he has.
In another lie, Simko claims the museum teaches that “there are no fundamental physical laws of the universe, everything is subject to disruption and miracle.” This is simply not true—the Bible clearly says that there are laws of nature. Jeremiah 33:25 tells us that there are “ordinances of heaven and earth.” And, of course, God can interrupt these laws—He put them in place and He sustains the universe, and He’s free to suspend them if He chooses!
I encourage you to read the article “Don’t Creationists Deny the Laws of Nature?” for information on what Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum teach on this subject.
In his third untruth about our beliefs, Simko says we teach “that all logic is irrelevant, and to never trust ‘man’s word,’ only ‘God’s Word.’” We’re not ashamed to tell people that God’s Word is the ultimate authority in every area of life, and that man’s word is fallible and changes. However, we don’t teach that logic is irrelevant—logic comes from God! Logic is the correct way of thinking, and the laws of logic are God’s standard for reasoning. It would make no sense, logically speaking, for us to claim that logic is irrelevant. In fact, the Bible says: “Come now, and let us reason together” (Isaiah 1:18). Again, for the truth about what our ministry teaches, read the article “Logic or Faith?” on our website. By the way, if the universe was a result of random processes, why would we even have (or trust) the laws of logic?
Finally, Simko tells the most egregious lie about the Creation Museum when he writes, “There are guards present to suppress criticism and nonbelievers (you must sign a document upon entering that requires you not to discuss any contrary ideas!).” First of all, we have public safety officers (not “guards”) because we are a public facility and have large numbers of the public visiting throughout the year. Also, in this day and age, most public facilities recognize the importance of having visible safety officers. We have had numerous guests thank us for providing public safety officers—they feel safer.
Also, there is no such document for guests to sign at the Creation Museum. Simko linked to an article but has intentionally misrepresented the information he found there. He pulled it from an article on my blog from 2009. In 2009, the museum had a group of 285 Secular Student Alliance members, most of them atheists, tour the Creation Museum. We were concerned about possible disruptions, and when we expressed our concerns, the SSA organizer volunteered to have everyone in her party sign statements that they would not be disruptive and keep the other guests from enjoying the musuem. The report from Mark Looy, the AiG–U.S. CCO, is as follows:
It helped that all 285 atheists/agnostics signed a statement that they would be civil—they did that when they checked in and got their tickets from their organizer, Lyz (who was a pleasure to work with). By the way, I did not request that the signed agreements were to be done (with the exception of getting the professor’s signature [he is an out-spoken atheist and anti-creationist, who is known for making vile comments], which we demanded in a certified letter mailed to him over a week ago)—to her credit, Lyz, after hearing our concerns about the web chatter about the possible behavior of her SSA group, did not want to see a ruckus in the museum, and she, I understand it, volunteered the idea of having her group sign such a statement (and we did verify with Lyz that the prof signed it).
It’s very, very disappointing to see that a student at an Ivy League school like Princeton (secular as it is) can’t seem to do proper research before posting inaccurate information about our organization. Let’s hope he does better research for his courses at the college!
At the end of his post, he writes, “I pity the children. . . . The ideas presented in this ‘museum’ are flagrant lies that stomp on the legitimacies of science, shutting the door on disciplines such as biology, cosmology, chemistry, and reason.” How ironic that he used the word “lies.” Second, the Creation Museum and Answers in Genesis have no problem with observational science like biology, chemistry, etc. It’s the false interpretations of historical science that are the problem—in other words, untestable and unprovable evolutionary ideas. Simko’s flagrant lies make me want to pity him for the account he’ll have to give one day for his attempts to lead others astray and to undermine God’s Word.
I wonder if the young man will be honest enough to apologize to his readers and correct his false statements? And if he hasn’t visited the Creation Museum, he needs to admit that. I encourage him to visit (he can drive here in a day from Princeton) and see firsthand what we really teach.
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken

A Poem in Our Honor
A seventeen-year-old named Lucy who has visited the Creation Museum sent the following feedback and poem I thought I would share with you:
Dear Ken Ham and AiG staff,
This Creation Museum is amazing! I am impressed, encouraged and instructed after my time here. Thank you – I have been so blessed by your ministry. I wrote this poem in your honor. Hope you enjoy it.
Let souls be still; let lips be gateways sealed
Let regents bow and judges bend and yield
Before this high and awful mystery
We cannot fathom what our eyes can see
Almighty Spirit wears a robe of dust
Full Deity confined in earthly crust
Somehow, the potent powers of Godhead mesh
With beating blood and sinews of the flesh
But deeper wonder, blacker mystery
Behold this veil of frail humanity!
For blood runs down, and flesh is slashed and torn
And God bears pain like man has never borne
“I AM” took on the form of Adam’s line
Indwelling cursed creation, though Divine
Yet His body, battered in men’s senseless spite
Seems hardly man in its gore tonight
But now this desecrated frame of earth
Receives God’s breath and warms to second birth
The silent pulse renews its rhythm fresh
In wrists scarred by iron piercing flesh
The spotless Lamb Messiah, ever wise
He lives within His world, He serves, He dies
Exalt Him high, all sons of human race
For His gift, His glory and His grace
Praise His Name! Soli Deo Gloria!

What Is the “Principal Goal of Atheism?”
I’m sure most of you will remember the person behind a U.S. Supreme Court case in 1963 that resulted in a ruling that ended Bible-reading in public schools in America—Madalyn Murray O’Hair. She went on to found the American Atheists. She has left an anti-God legacy that to this day is permeating American culture..
Recently, AiG speaker and researcher Dr. Georgia Purdom wrote a blog post about O’Hair’s son William (Bill) Murray. His autobiography gives insight into the intense hatred this woman had for God and His Word, and the impact this one God-hating woman has had on the culture and generations of kids. Here is what Dr. Purdom wrote on her blog:
Over the Christmas break as I was waiting on my daughter to choose some books from our local library, I was intrigued when I saw a book titled My Life without God. The book is an autobiography written by William (Bill) Murray, son of Madalyn Murray O’Hair. Madalyn Murray O’Hair is infamous for her fight to remove prayer from public schools that was achieved through a Supreme Court decision in 1963.
As I read about Bill and Madalyn’s life, I just kept thinking, “How is it possible that a woman who was an avowed Marxist and wanted to defect to the Soviet Union was given so much media attention and influence in the U.S. government?” If Madalyn were alive today, she would be grouped with the “New Atheists.” She was passionate about hating God and wanted all the fame and glory for herself. I’ve often thought that cases to remove “In God We Trust” from U.S. currency and “under God” from the pledge of allegiance were modern battles. However, Madalyn was fighting these very same battles in the 1960s. She wanted every trace of God completely removed from society.
Bill’s story is a very sad account, and at times I wasn’t sure I would be able to finish the book. He endured a lot of abuse physically, mentally, and emotionally. One time, his mother read through his junior high history book and made this comment:
“I can’t believe all the hogwash in there. It treats the parting of the Red Sea just like it really happened. It’s incredible! Later on it talks about Jesus and says he was the son of God, that he performed miracles and rose from the dead. [Expletive] stuff I ever read. It has no place in a public school textbook!”[1]
Having graduated from the public school system, I was shocked that at one time biblical history was part of the history books! The battles Madalyn and others fought with the public school system have made a huge impact on the information taught there over the last 40–50 years. We really shouldn’t be surprised that there is so much violence among children, especially in school. This is the result of children learning that—instead of being created in the image of God—they are nothing more than the result of time, death, and chance.
Bill became very disillusioned about life over the years, but wasn’t willing to give up on atheism yet. He wrote a letter to 400 members of his mother’s atheist organization. He stated the following:
I wrote to them asking for support of positive rather than negative atheism. I suggested we use funds to establish atheist chairs at universities rather than to sue to have religious chairs removed. I recommended the construction of monuments and hospital wings.[2]
And what was the response of the atheists?
A handful of people sent contributions out of habit. But the overwhelming majority of those who answered my letter pelted me with such abuse that I was stunned. Over and over I read that the principal goal of atheism was the destruction of religion and that this was no time to build.[3]
Pure and simple atheism is nothing more than rebellion against God. That is its sole goal and purpose. There is nothing in atheism to “build” on. If you think people are nothing more than animals, evolved by random chance, then there is no ultimate meaning and purpose in life. Why build hospitals to save people’s lives? Why bother teaching people anything at all?
These events and others led Bill to believe that God must exist, so he gave his life to Christ at the age of 33. A short while later, Bill wrote a letter to the people of the city of Baltimore where the case to remove prayer in public schools had begun. He wrote as follows:
First, I would like to apologize to the people of the City of Baltimore for whatever part I played in the removal of Bible reading and praying from the public schools of that city. I now realize the value of this great tradition and the importance it has played in the past in keeping America a moral and lawful country. I can now see the damage this removal has caused to our nation in the form of loss of faith and moral decline.[4]
In some ways it is sad to think about the impact that one person with sinful motives and actions can make in this world. But we should rejoice that one person with Christ-centered motives and actions can also make an impact in this world. As we begin 2013, think about ways you can impact the world around you. How can you equip people to defend the authority of the truth of God’s Word? Maybe through a Bible study, Sunday school class, having a conversation with a neighbor or friend, or maybe sending resources to a loved one who has questions. We can all make a difference.
Keep fighting the good fight of the faith!

Responding to False Claims
AiG’s Creation Museum is being challenged once again by the secularists, this time in the renowned magazine Scientific American.1 A guest columnist reports he visited the museum recently. Jacob Tanenbaum, a fourth and fifth grade science teacher, wrote the column titled “A Science Teacher Draws the Line at Creation.”2 The piece was originally published in the January 2013 print edition of Scientific American under the title “Creation, Evolution and Indisputable Facts.”
The fact that the well-known Scientific American has published this commentary is significant. To us it means the editors understand the importance of this battle over origins. In reality, it is a struggle over the question of authority. Who is the ultimate authority—man or God? Whatever authority you acknowledge will determine how you view moral issues such as “gay” marriage and abortion. If God is the authority (and He is), then marriage is one man and one woman, and abortion is a crime against God. If man is the authority, then marriage can be however one wants to define it—and abortion is just another way to kill an animal.
Unsurprisingly, Mr. Tanenbaum’s “facts” about our exhibits aren’t exactly accurate.
For instance, Tanenbaum claims that we teach, regarding the global Flood, that “Noah saved all animal species that we see today from the Flood.” This is a common equivocation that evolutionists make in regard to the animals on Noah’s Ark. As we clearly teach in the Creation Museum, Noah didn’t take representatives of every species of animal we see today—he took representatives of every “kind” of land animal (which is usually at the “family” level of classification). And these animals would have had the genetic material within them to eventually produce the many species we see today. Our researchers are working on a series of articles outlining the kinds that were likely present on the Ark. For the moment, read the first of these articles by Dr. Jean Lightner in our peer-reviewed Answers Research Journal.
We decided to make this article our lead item for the web today, so you can read the rest of the article, which I coauthored with Dr. Georgia Purdom and Steve Golden of our staff, at this link.
