Archaeology and Ai
Last month, Henry Smith of the biblical archaeology group Associates for Biblical Research spoke to our staff and gave an update on some of ABR’s archaeological digs in the Holy Land. It’s fascinating how this Bible-upholding ministry uses archaeology to confirm various historical accounts we read about in the Bible. Many secular archaeologists today claim that the Bible is not accurate in recording some of the events in both the Old and New Testaments—and that includes, they claim, what the Bible says about the location of Ai (Joshua 7–8). Secularists have said there is no evidence of any occupation at Ai during the time of Joshua, and thus the Bible must be mistaken.
Well, for almost 20 years, ABR has excavated a site at Khirbet el-Maqatir, about 10 miles north of Jerusalem. They have already found a city gate, walls, and a lot of pottery from the time of Joshua. They believe that the evidence is providing some archaeological backing to biblical Ai having been found right there. Since 1995, ABR—under the direction of Dr. Bryant Wood—has been digging at Khirbet el-Maqatir.
Here are a couple of photos of Henry speaking to our staff about the dig at Maqatir:
A video that features interviews with Dr. Wood about the Bible and the city of Jericho is carried by us; see The Fall of Jericho.

Boy Scouts in Worldview Clash!
The difference between what is Christian and what is not is widening in America. The chasm between the two has been increasing rapidly. This widening is really a manifestation of a clash between two worldviews—one that consists of Christian morality, which ultimately comes from the Bible, and one of moral relativism that is based in the belief that autonomous man determines truth.
This battle and chasm can be seen in the greatly publicized controversy surrounding the Boy Scouts of America and whether they will allow gays to be admitted to the institution. It’s also a reminder that, although in the past many Americans accepted much of the Christian worldview (which comes from the Bible), without God’s Word as the foundation, Christian morality will eventually collapse in this nation. We see this happening in many areas, including with the Boy Scouts.
I suggest that if Christians want organizations to be truly Christian and have a worldview that stands on a solid foundation, then they will have to build their own institutions that acknowledge God’s Word as the truth (not just that there is a God or that one must only adopt Christian morality). The Word of God is the only foundation for a Christian worldview.
AiG researcher and writer Steve Golden has written today’s lead article on the AiG website about the Boy Scout controversy. I encourage you to read this article, which begins as follows:
The Boy Scouts of America (B.S.A.), which only last summer confirmed its policy that kept homosexuals from joining, has now been debating the possibility of ending its ban on gay membership in the organization. On Wednesday, the organization announced that it is delaying its vote on the issue until May.1 The proposal, if passed in May as it is currently written, would take a sort of “middle ground” on the issue: the decision to admit openly gay members to the Boy Scouts would be left to individual troop leaders.
Of course, leaving the decision up to individual troops would essentially be a non-answer from the Boy Scouts of America. What’s more, it would essentially serve as an affirmation of homosexual behavior as much as it would be if scout troops were forced to admit gay members. The organization, if it chooses the route of simply leaving the decision up to individual troops, will have given in to a false idea of neutrality. The B.S.A. will have bought into the idea that by not voicing its opposition to or support for homosexual behavior, it can avoid conflict and not force anyone to violate his beliefs.

Atheist Church (Yes!) Now Meets on Sunday
A news item from England has the headline, “What happens at an atheist church?”
Actually, I would suggest that atheist churches have been operating across the Western nations for a long time. By and large in the USA, public schools and secular universities have really become churches of humanism with many of the teachers and professors being the high priests of this church. In the UK, government-funded schools are not any better. In both nations, schools teach naturalism as fact, using the belief in evolution and millions of years as a supposed “scientific” justification for their atheistic (naturalistic) anti-God religion that they have imposed on generations of students. They legislate to protect their anti-God religion and allow no questions asked or any critical evaluation. It is sheer dogma!
By the way, there are some Christian missionaries in such school system, including some godly teachers—but they are by far the minority.
This latest news item details the formation of an atheist church that meets on Sunday. Why would they do this? Well, it’s really a part of an effort to fill the void in their lives because underneath it all they know God is the Creator and they have a conscience written on their hearts:
… because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse. (Romans 1:19–20)
… who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them. (Romans 2:15)
In fact, I believe this biblical truth is illustrated in the BBC article where the reporter states, “The audience – overwhelmingly young, white and middle class – appear excited to be part of something new and speak of the void they felt on a Sunday morning when they decided to abandon their Christian faith.”
The article begins this way: “An ‘atheist church’ in North London is proving a big hit with non-believers. Does it feel a bit like a new religion?”
The reporter then states, “Not many sermons include the message that we are all going to die and there is no afterlife.”
This comment really sums it up for me. Atheists believe when they die they will cease to exist—which means they won’t know they were ever conscious beings—so what does that mean about life? It means it is totally meaningless and purposeless! But wait—the atheists are so aggressive in our world today to stop the Christian message. They are so active to protect their meaningless religion in educational institutions. Why do they even bother? If life is ultimately a meaningless existence for a short time—why do their efforts matter at all?
Their actions merely reinforce the fact that there is a spiritual battle going on and that they know in their hearts there is a God. So why are they so active to promote their meaningless religion and to oppose Christians? Well, it’s an illustration of Romans 1:18—they “suppress the truth in unrighteousness.”
This church, yes, meets on Sunday:
But the Sunday Assembly is no ordinary church service.
Launched last month, as a gathering for non-believers, it is, in the words of master of ceremonies Sanderson Jones, “part foot-stomping show, part atheist church, all celebration of life”.
Why would they meet on Sunday? I believe it is a way of shaking their fist at God—to make a mockery of the Christian celebration of Christ’s resurrection.
It reminds me of the time a few years ago when a group of atheists visited the Creation Museum and then met outside the gates to mock communion (in reality, to mock the death and resurrection of Christ). One of them was served Kentucky bourbon and a cheese cracker!
The atheist church doesn’t sing Christian hymns, of course, but as the article states, “Instead of hymns, the non-faithful get to their feet to sing along to Stevie Wonder and Queen songs.”
In reality they are worshiping man. Again, it is Romans 1 illustrated before our very eyes:
… who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. (Romans 1:25)
They even bow to “worship the creature.” The report states the following:
So we bow our heads for two minutes of contemplation about the miracle of life and, in his closing sermon, Jones speaks about how the death of his mother influenced his own spiritual journey and determination to get the most out of every second, aware that life is all too brief and nothing comes after it.
One can only smile at this statement:
“It’s not a church, it’s a congregation of unreligious people.”
They obviously crave the truth of God they are suppressing as illustrated in this statement:
Another attendee, Gintare Karalyte, says: “I think people need that sense of connectedness because everyone is so singular right now, and to be part of something, and to feel like you are part of something. That’s what people are craving in the world.”
And what is happening in England is also happening in America:
The number of people declaring themselves to be of “no religion” in England and Wales has increased by more than six million since 2001 to 14.1 million, according to the latest census. That makes England and Wales two of the most unreligious nations in the Western world.
The Devil always tries to copy the things of God and pervert them for his counterfeit religion:
And writer Alain De Botton has unveiled a Manifesto for Atheists, listing 10 virtues – or as the press has already dubbed them “commandments” – for the faithless. …
He argues for a new breed of secular therapists to take the place of the priesthood …
There is a concern among some non-believers that atheism is developing into a religion in its own right, with its own code of ethics and self-appointed high priests.
As we’ve been saying for a long time, two-thirds of young people in America are leaving the church by college age—this has already happened in England. The article states that people in this church “decided to abandon their Christian faith.” And the next paragraph really sums it up—and should be a warning for the church in America, for this is the reality of what has happened in England and the reality of where the church in America is heading:
The Sunday Assembly certainly did better business than at the evangelical St Jude and St Paul’s Church next door, where about 30 believers gathered to sing gospel songs and listen to Bible readings.
And then this very telling statement:
But Bishop Harrison, a Christian preacher for 30 years, says he does not see his new neighbours as a threat, confidently predicting that their spiritual journey will eventually lead them to God.
“They have got to start from somewhere,” he says.
Hopeless! He has no clue that it’s really because of the church and its rampant compromise on God’s Word that these people are on a journey away from Christianity! God’s people need to repent of compromising His Word and start preaching the Word with authority and countering the false arguments of our day that have brainwashed generations into not trusting the Bible, and only then will we even begin to reach these who have been lost from the church.
If you haven’t done so, I encourage you to read the book Already Gone, which discusses this youth exodus in detail and the remedies for a church that is losing the coming generations. You can read it online or purchase the book from our online store.

A “Wheaton” I Can Endorse*
I wanted to bring a Christian leader and his essay contest to your attention—a contest that can lead to a scholarship to The Master’s College in California. David Wheaton is the host of the radio program The Christian Worldview, and he recorded an interview with me on Wednesday (for a broadcast that will be aired in a few weeks). My time with him prompted me to let you know about his scholarship contest, as well as Master’s College.
As you may know, this year’s AiG theme is related to reaching young people (it’s called “Standing Our Ground, Rescuing Our Kids”). I particularly want to let you know of like-minded groups—like David’s, plus Master’s College—that are reaching youth with the message that the Bible can be trusted from the very first verse. David is a former highly ranked, international tennis player, and he is now the head of a ministry and a radio program called The Christian Worldview. See www.TheChristianWorldview.org
Through David’s ministry, students can win a $4,000 scholarship to The Master’s College in Santa Clarita, California. It’s one of the few creationist, Christian colleges in the world, and it is led by president and pastor/teacher John MacArthur. Along with the $4,000 tuition scholarship to the Master’s College, there will be free airfare, lodging, and meals to attend the school’s College View Weekend next month—March 21-23.
This essay contest is eligible for high school students and college transfers who are planning on attending The Master’s College starting in the fall of this year. They must be a new student to The Master’s College.
Here is the essay topic: “What are the most important foundations of the Christian worldview and why?” (600–750 words). The deadline is Sunday, February 24, 2013.
The essay contest winner and the essay will be posted in March at www.TheChristianWorldview.org. Anyone who submits a valid essay will receive a free copy of Pastor MacArthur’s book, Found: God’s Will.
Essays are to be sent to David at feedback@TheChristianWorldview.org (you can send the essay in the body of your email and/or as a PDF attachment).
Include the following on the first page or on the cover page:
First and last name
Age, school, year
Address
Phone number
Email address
Essay title
Word count
Now, by submitting an essay, you are pledging, says David, that you are the original author of your essay.
If you have questions, write to feedback@TheChristianWorldview.org.
The Master’s College is a national sponsor of The Christian Worldview, a nationally syndicated radio program that airs on about 200 stations. For more information on The Master’s College, visit www.Masters.edu.

Scout Unashamedly Shines Light of God’s Truth
Recently there have been numerous news items about the Boy Scouts in the USA and how the group is reconsidering its policy on admitting gays. Here is an example of a news item that discussed this topic.
An AiG supporter who is an Eagle Scout (the highest rank in scouting) sent us a copy of the letter he sent to his local scouting council. He wrote the following:
Dear …
I am an Eagle Scout … and a current Tiger Den Leader in … I have been reading about the proposed policy changes and I felt compelled to write to you.
I am appalled that you are considering allowing openly homosexual leaders. It is striking how much the organization has drifted towards political correctness since I was a Boy Scout. But, this is beyond comprehension.
I have been pledging to be reverent (Scout Law) and morally straight (Scout Oath) since I was a kid and joined scouting. Though I do not claim to be perfect in this regard (far from it), I know that God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins when we repent. Repentance and striving to obey God’s law is very different than openly living in a constant state of rebellion and working to deceive others into accepting the rebellion. Romans 1:26-32 (copied below for your reference) is very clear on how God feels about this behavior. Moral straightness and reverence are not congruent with openly disobeying God’s written word.
Not only is this proposed policy change giving “hearty approval to those who practice such ”, but, it is endangering children in the process. For clarity, I am not saying that all homosexuals are child molesters. But, I am saying that all are practicing a depravity before God. I pray that those in this lifestyle will repent and seek forgiveness. How can the Boy Scouts, in good conscience, claim to have a desire to promote moral straightness and reverence before God while at the same time giving tacit approval to behavior that is explicitly condemned in the Bible?
BSA should be ashamed of even considering this. The Boy Scouts that helped me to become a man and taught me sound principles would not have allowed this and I am saddened to see this being considered. I can only hope and pray that the organization will repent and reconsider the policy change.
I left similar feedback on the national scouting site. However, feel free to forward this to whomever you deem appropriate within your organization. If you wish to discuss this further, please feel free to give me a call. …
Respectfully, …
26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is [a]unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing [b]indecent acts and receiving in [c]their own persons the due penalty of their error.
28 And just as they did not see fit [d]to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, [e]haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
-Romans 1:26-32 (NASB)
Thanks to this Eagle Scout for being unashamedly Christian and shining the light of God’s truth in the culture.

A Tiny Feathered Dino?
Yet another supposed “feathered dinosaur” fossil has come to light, again in China. (Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell, AiG–U.S., reported on another Chinese fossil of a supposed feathered dinosaur in April 2012) Now, one headline described the fossil as “almost birdlike,” and the authors of the report in Nature Communications note many features the fossil shares with living birds, particularly those that live on the ground. In fact, Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell and Dr. David Menton (AiG–U.S.) both examined the photos of the fossil and the criteria the authors used in classifying the fossil as a dinosaur. They agreed that it is a bird, not a feathered dinosaur.
The report claimed that the fossil is between 153 and 165 million years old. Not only that, but the researchers have based all their findings on the assumption that birds are just highly evolved dinosaurs. You see, their whole system of thought is so rooted in evolutionary ideas—like common ancestry—that they can’t see the problems with their own analyses. Despite all the problems with the idea that a dinosaur could evolve into a bird, they still insist these fossils are proof that some dinosaurs had feathers.
The fossil record doesn’t reveal any kind of dinosaur-to-bird evolution—and it certainly does not show a molecules-to-man evolution. We have no proof of transitional forms, and we won’t. God’s Word says clearly that He created animals and plants according to their kinds (Genesis 1). Through genetic loss and other factors, new species have emerged over time—but birds are still birds and apes are still apes. Nothing in the history of biology has legitimately shown that dinosaurs could develop the genetic information to evolve into birds.
I urge you to read Dr. Mitchell’s much more detailed analysis in today’s News to Note so that you’ll be prepared to respond to the skeptical claims related to this fossil.

Raising Our Children … Without God?
Well, an article that recently appeared on CNN’s website tried to defend raising children in an atheistic worldview. The author, a mother of two children, listed a number of objections to a belief in God and explained why she believes raising our children “without God” is better for them. So AiG research assistant Steve Golden replied, and this response has been posted to the AiG website as today’s lead article.
The article begins as follows:
We live in a culture that is shaking its fist in rebellion against God. More and more, people in our society are choosing to abandon the Bible as the ultimate authority and embrace the self-centered, godless philosophies that the Apostle Paul warns about in Colossians 2:8:
Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
One of these deceitful philosophies is atheism. And in today’s culture, the atheistic worldview is being pushed not only to adults, but also to our children. At Answers in Genesis, we chose the theme for the next two years “Standing Our Ground, Rescuing Our Kids.” Why? Because secularists know that if they can win the hearts and minds of just one generation, they will win the culture.
In a recent article titled “Why I Raise My Children Without God,” the guest writer (who remains anonymous), a mother of two teenagers, explains why she no longer tells her children about God.1She lists a series of objections to believing in God and attempts to defend them, and she directly states the intent of secularists to capture the coming generation: “We are creating the next generation of kids, and there is a wave of young agnostics, atheists, free thinkers and humanists rising up.” Sadly, the point of her article is to share her atheistic views and how they have affected her parenting, in the hope of influencing others in a similar way.
I urge you to read the rest of Steve’s commentary—and to sincerely pray for this woman and her children.

Calvin and Westmont Christian College Professors Leading Charge Against Biblical Authority
BioLogos, an organization dedicated to promoting theistic evolution (or “evolutionary creation”), recently saw the departure of its president Darrel Falk, professor of biology at Point Loma Nazarene University in California. The board of BioLogos published an article announcing the appointment of their new president and their new senior scholar.
Dr. Deborah Haarsma, professor of physics and astronomy at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan (a Christian college), has taken on the role of president of BioLogos. And Dr. Jeffrey Schloss, professor of biology at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California (also a Christian college), will be the new senior researcher. By the way, Westmont College hosted Peter Enns and his heretical teachings in 2011 for a lecture in which he presented a view of Genesis that included rejecting a literal Adam and a literal Eve:
Click here to view the embedded video.
Now, BioLogos has been trying to convince Christian leaders that evolutionary/millions of years ideas are compatible with Genesis and is encouraging them to teach evolution and millions of years from the pulpit. Dr. Haarsma, in particular, has been actively pursuing this mission, as a codirector of The Ministry Theorem, a Calvin Seminary program that helps pastors “engage” their congregations on evolutionary ideas. The site promotes resources from people who compromise God’s Word in Genesis, such as Francis Collins and William Dembski.
You see, BioLogos has chosen a president who denies the authority of Scripture when it comes to Genesis. Actually, I think it’s helpful to show you what Dr. Haarsma believes in her own words. Just watch the video at the link below. You’ll notice around the 2:44 mark, she explains her view of the history presented in the opening chapters of Genesis.
Click here to view the embedded video.
In a transcript of that section, Haarsma claims that Genesis 1 “is a message of how God interacts with His creation and of our role in creation. It’s several key theological messages. But it is not a message about the how and the when of creation. God didn’t bother to teach the ancient Hebrews that the world was actually round. He didn’t bother to teach them that it was actually atmosphere in the sky instead of a solid sky dome. He let them keep believing that. He accommodated the message to where they were at. And I find that so comforting to us today that God is willing to accommodate His message to our limited understanding. We don’t have to have a perfect scientific understanding of the world to get God’s message for us. And for that reason, I don’t think we need to draw from Genesis 1 a chronology of how God created, a timeline of specific physical events, but rather these very important theological views.”
Did you catch that? Dr. Haarsma believes Genesis “is not a message about the how and the when of creation” and that God “accommodated the message to where they [the Israelites] were at.” So she plainly denies that what Scripture says about creation is true, and she thinks that God isn’t capable of communicating an understandable description of literal history to His people! And really she is saying that God is not telling the truth in that He “accommodates” the message to where they are at (or where she believes they were at from her wrong view of history).
Dr. Schloss also accepts evolutionary ideas wholeheartedly. In a Veritas forum video from 2010, Dr. Schloss explains that we don’t read science or Scripture perfectly, and that if his commitment to evolutionary ideas conflicts with his commitment to what the Bible says … he’d “think hard.” Watch the clip for yourself:
Click here to view the embedded video.
He doesn’t say he would defer to the Word of God, the One who was there and gave us an eyewitness account of history. No, he would “think hard.”
What Haarsma and Schloss are promoting are not evolutionary ideas alone—what they’re doing is helping to promote the blending of Christianity with an atheistic religion, and consequently are undermining the authority of the Word of God! The evolutionary worldview is the secularists’ primary way of explaining the world without God. And two professing Christians employed by two Christian colleges are leaders in the charge against biblical authority in Genesis.
For a review of Dr. Haarsma’s book, Origins: A Reformed Look at Creation, Design, & Evolution, written by Reformed scholar Dr. Joe Pipa, see Reformed View of Origins?
The mission of Haarsma and Schloss, and BioLogos as a whole, is absolutely destructive to the church. And you know, the church needs to hold people like Haarsma, Schloss, and others who are teaching forms of theistic evolution accountable for their false teachings. I urge you to stand firmly on the authority of God’s Word from the very first verse. I also urge you to learn the Scriptures, so that when your pastors and other church leaders make statements about the Bible, you can investigate those statements for yourself and gently but firmly challenge your leaders to stand on the authority of Scripture as well.
And please be careful where you send your kids to college! For a list of Christian colleges whose presidents have affirmed in writing the Answers in Genesis Statement of Faith, visit CreationColleges.org.

This is the last opportunity to receive a discount to attend our practical Children’s Ministry Conference, March 15–16 (Friday–Saturday), here at the Creation Museum. This is a must conference for all children’s ministry leaders and workers. I call it “hands-on, biblical apologetics” for the next generation.
To receive the early bird special rate, register by Thursday, January 31, and save 20%.
I’ll be speaking during the Friday session. For the conference schedule and to register by Thursday, visit www.AnswersinGenesis.org/go/childrens.
I would appreciate it if you would please forward this blog item to children’s workers in your church.
Swedish Media Here
Interest in the Creation Museum continues outside the United States. Recently, a crew of four from Channel 6 in Sweden (based in Stockholm) were here to do a segment on our museum, and they interviewed Dr. Terry Mortenson of our staff. We don’t know what ideas the Swedish team had about the nature of the museum before they arrived, but they were very impressed with the quality of the museum—and also with our staff (especially those holding doctorate degrees).
If the segment ever appears on Swedish TV and is posted to the station’s website, we’ll let you know. Of course the segments featuring Dr. Mortenson will be in English.
We praise God for the many opportunities that the Creation Museum is having, not only in reaching out to so many Americans with the truth of God’s Word and its gospel message, but also for the opportunity to impact the many international visitors who continue to come here.
