Morning Thoughts

Slow this morning. Meant to get up early and get a million things done, but it didn't quite work out right -- ended up setting the alarm clock for 6 p.m. instead of 6 a.m. Bah. Thankfully, I woke up in time to get to work, but not early enough to get the errands and writing that I had on my agenda done.

Been a bit buried in writing, lately. So much that I'm spending nearly every available moment at my computer. On the one hand, I'm still working away at my witch-centric short story, and as I d...

"Easter, 1916" and "September, 1913"

Felt the need to revisit some W.B. Yeats while working on the current poetry project, including "Easter, 1916." Of course, it took me a minute to realize that it'll be Easter in less than an hour. And yet, it seems appropriate to share again, for any number of reasons:

Easter, 1916
-- by William Butler Yeats

I HAVE met them at close of day
Coming with vivid faces
From counter or desk among grey
Eighteenth-century houses.
I have passed with a nod of the head
Or polite meaningless words,
Or have lin...

My Flagging Netiquette

It has been pointed out to me, quite correctly, that I failed to link back to blogs and such that I was referencing in my recent April Fool's Day rampage. There were two reasons for that: 1.) I was writing the jokes quickly, in my copious spare time, and posting them when I had a few ready to go, meaning it was a bit of a slap job. (You could tell that by the jokes. Buh-dum-CHING!) and 2.) I didn't want to over-tip the jokes in case anyone fell for them by providing easy, discrediting referen...

April Fool's Day Roundup

I love April Fool's Day. It's an entire day devoted to jokes! How awesome is that!?!?

Still, in my silliness yesterday, I seem to have caused some confusion, so I'll make it clear: Jeff Bernard is not, to my knowledge, the new editor of Worcester Magazine, there is no complete A-Ha Box Set, and Hooters is not, to my knowledge, a sponsor of National Poetry Month.

It is true, however, that Concrete Blonde is going back on tour, that I actually enjoyed the end of "Blackest Night," and that Mike Mc...

The Day's BIG News ...

Congrats to Wormtown Taxi's Jeff Bernard for being named the new editor of Worcester Magazine! Jeff and I have had ... well ... more than our share of disagreements, but I'm sure he'll take that paper to new and interesting places.

More brief dispatches from a busy day...

*Not sure how I feel about the news that Hooters has taken over the development of CitySquare. On the other hand, Alex Charalambides has already announced that he'll be hosting yet another poetry reading there, and word is that it will be the new home for Shane Hall's Tuesday night open mic, so it's not all bad news.

*The idea of a poetry reading at Hooters might seem strange now, but now that they're an official sponsor of National Poetry Month, expect to see it a lot more often. After all, M...

Morning Thoughts

Busy morning. Only time for a scratchpad of what's on my mind:

*I enjoyed "Blackest Night" much more than I thought I was going to, and for once the dismount on a giant comics "event" story was pretty damn satisfying, but I question DC's decision to resurrect Super Chief and the Brown Bomber for such prominent roles in its next big story.

*I'll admit, I was excited at first that my short story "Putting the Paper to Bed" was going to be published in "Playboy," but the editorial process they in...

The Future of Journalism?

I've been curious about the impending launch of the new, nonprofit, hard-news oriented Web site Voice of OC. And now that it's here ... well ... I don't know. I think it's going to need some time to build up speed. It's a little conservative, and maybe a little Conservative. Of course, it is Orange County. It's not flashy, and there's some good, solid reporting in it. But is it enough to keep Orange County residents (and not just news-geek expatriates like myself) coming back? Maybe.

But it's ...

Less cynically ...

"If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing."
                               — Sherman Alexie, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian"

Obviously, I enjoyed the book. Moreover, it's true. Yesterday started off kind of sucking, and it ended up OK, thanks, in great deal, to a little help and support from good friends. Our stove is fixed and Lea has a new computer monitor, and what looked like it was going to be a few days of inconvenience and headac...

Quote Worth Remembering

"I used to think the world was broken down by tribes," I said. "By black and white. By Indian and white. But I know that isn't true. The world is only broken into two tribes: The people who are assholes and the people who are not." — Sherman Alexie, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian"
