When comic books become language ...
I was reading the Telegram this morning, and was struck by the headline of my friend Clive McFarlane's column, "Some in city live in bizarro, carefree world."
And while I liked the column well enough, what really caught my attention is the word "bizarro" in the headline, which was probably used by a copy editor, as it doesn't appear in the article itself. (Remember, kids! Most journalists don't write their own headlines! They're written to space by copy editors late in the evening. So stop co...

Columnist Wars!
As anyone who knows me knows, I'm a big fan of columnist wars and, if they're entertaining enough, have no compunctions whatsoever in using this blog to stoke them further. Because mischief is its own reward, especially good spirited mischief.
Alas, the "Rose Tirella vs. the Rest of the World" war has faded somewhat, and frankly, it was hardly what anyone could call good-spirited. But just as I was resigning myself to thinking I'd have to start amusing myself with actual issues again, WoMag's ...

Thursdays are for pimping ...
Been buried, lately. Trying to get things done, including some writing, and it's all being slow-going.
However, it's Thursday, and that means I have stuff in the Telegram. First off, in "What You're Listening To," I talk to Worcester's prog-rock guitar-driven instrumentalists Sky Blue Mind. Then, over in "The Weekend Starts Now," we have recs for Coolio, Les Sampou, Alexisonfire, The Ben Levin Group, The Black Raspberries, Puma Perl and ARTSWorcester.
Because if loving Coolio is wrong, I don'...

"Idol" (yeah, yeah, yeah ...)
I have a love-hate relationship with the pop standards. While there are a few, like say Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man" or Gladys Knight's "Midnight Train to Georgia," which are always welcome and even capable of moving me to tears if they hit me at the right angle, songs like that are few and far between. Many pop standards I can appreciate for what they are, but care little about. Most, I have varying degrees of open disdain for.

The sad truth is ...
... "Family Guy" has begun to suck beyond all recognition. Sure, it's always had its ups and downs, and sometimes it reached too far and fell flat on its animated face, but recent episodes haven't been entertaining at all, and frankly, I've given up.
The good news is, though, that a nearly forgotten, underestimated titan has returned to the animated battleground ...
"... and I will remain a soldier/until the war is won ..."
Oh, yeah. Welcome back, Mr. McGruder. You've been missed.

"Writing Poetry" panel
Most of the discussion ended up being about subjects a bit outside my area -- which was to be expected, I suppose, as this online digital conference is dominated by SF fiction writers -- although I was happy to be referred to Gabrielle Calvocoressi, whose work I was unaware of, and whose excellent poem "A Love Supreme" came up when I Googled her name.
I would have liked to talk more about contemporary poetry, but the discussion never really got there. I had compiled a list of recommendations f...

Odds & Ends ...
Excellent reading last night at the Mill Fudge Factory in Bristol, New Hampshire. Totally worth the drive. We got fed a nice dinner, Ivy Page hosted an engaging open mic, and then we read to a room of 20-odd people. And then we got FUDGE! Ahem. I've been going on and on about the fudge, so let me explain. This fudge was recommended to us by Tony Brown, when he read at the Mill, who was singing the praises of this fudge up and down. So, naturally, I needed to know. And it did not disappoint....

Thursdays are for Pimping ...
Out the door soon to go read poetry at the Mill Fudge Factory in Bristol, New Hampshire. Should be a good time. Come by if you're in the area!
Today in the Telegram, I've got Bill McCarthy, Lord of the Open Mics, in "What You're Listening To," and in "The Weekend Starts Now" there are recs for Wreckoning, Ken Macy, A Loss for Words, Bearfoot, RC Weslowski and Capitol Steps.
And in the local blogs: Yes, for the record, I think this is hysterical.
