Catching up ...

The flu is more-or-less gone, but it's one of those ones with a nasty hangover. Had a cough that keeps recurring, and it's getting annoying. It's really played havoc with both of us.

Friday night, Lea read at the Stand Up for Kids benefit at the Wesley United Methodist Church on Main. St. Nice time. A couple folk acts, some salsa dancers from Clark, some hip-hop dancers from the Boys and Girls Club (who were AMAZING) and poetry readings by Lea and Jackie Morrill. All very fun. Plus, we stopped...

Really blogging again soon, but first ....

... part two of the GREATEST THING TO EVER BE SHOWN ON THE INTERNET: Tim Gunn critiquing super-hero costumes! This time around, he looks at Superman, Robin, Superboy and the Hulk!

Things to do in Worcester when you're, err, not dead ...

As is no particular secret, one of the most-demanding parts of my job at the Telegram & Gazette is editing the calendar section for Thursday's "Go" section. It's a fairly standard two-page newspaper calendar spread, weighted a bit toward the "arts & entertainment" side of things, with a smattering of "family events" and "lectures" and the like, to keep things mixed up. I try to keep it filled with live music, and obviously have a soft spot for live poetry, but those are really personal quirks...

Best! Thing! Ever!

Tim Gunn talks superhero fashion. Seriously. It's amazing. Even better, it's only Part One, which means there's more to come!

!!!FLUPOCALYPSE!!! update

Was healthy enough to come to work yesterday, although I was regretting that by the end of the day. Popped cough drops all day long to salve my sore throat, and my head increasingly was filled with glue. Blech.

It only got worse when I got home -- by dinner time, I could barely eat or drink. Even talking was annoying. Seriously made me difficult to deal with. To make matters worse, in the night I got a bad case of the chills. Blech, blech, blech.

Then, it all broke. Throat's fine this morning, ...

Blech

It was a three-day weekend here in Mass., and one which I had great plans for. Or, well, at least a few ideas to use well. At the very least, it wasn't going to go to waste.

Alas, it mostly went to waste.

First off, our houseguest for the weekend was deterred by a personal matter, and unable to visit. This changed Lea's plans for Friday night, and we ended up not doing much of anything.

Saturday we made it to the Kitchen Sessions, as hoped for, and saw a wonderful set by Karen Finneyfrock, and p...

Drive-by Geekery

OK. Spidey was one thing, as was Lyra, but now I'm convinced Marvel's fucking with us:

Geekery -- Merry Marvel Marching Society Edition

Excuse me. I need to have a hard-core comics geek moment here. I understand this will probably not be to everybody's interest. My apologies.

OK. Marvel Comics has been having too much fun with these "I'm an Avenger" ads. At first, they were fun, and while not exactly surprising, came with a little bit of old-school geek thrill:

OK. Cool. Thor's back in Avengers. Along with Iron Man, Clint Barton back in the Hawkeye garb, etc. Bucky's still on the team as Capt. America, even if Steve Rogers is ...

The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindler

The always interesting [info:] fengi   has a great post up illustrating the good, the bad and the mostly ugly of famed rock impresario (Hey! Second time I've used that word today!) and fashionista Malcolm McLaren. and make no mistake about it: McLaren was a con man and a jerk, and if anyone sold out punk rock, it was him.

Of course, the sad truth is, someone was going to sell out punk, in any case. All forms of popular art, particularly music, get co-opted one way or the other. Eventually, it all devol...

While I Was Out ...

Been a little immersed in writing NaPoWriMo stuff and the short story, so blogging? Right out the window. Time is a precious commodity today. Even without the writing, it's been a hectic week, although we did make it out to The Dirty Gerund on Monday to see the amazing Jeanann Verlee read. Picked up her new book from Write Bloody, Racing Hummingbirds, and it's absolutely delicious. Been thumbing through it ever since we got it.

Sunday, Lea will be featuring at the Poets Asylum as part of their...
