InCity SmackDown ...

So, last week, Rose Tirella, editor and publisher of the InCity Times --- which, yes, I used to write a column for, a million years ago -- published a rant on her blog about a sex tape that District Fire Chief Frank DiLiddo made more than a decade ago. Except, Tirella got the facts all wrong, and attributed the whole thing to Worcester Fire Chief Gerard Dio, going on to lambaste him personally and professionally, and inferred that he was a pedophile. (Of course, it was DiLiddo who made the ta...

BEARS!

Had a fantastic time at the Encyclopedia Show in Providence Saturday. Robbie Q. and Megan Thoma ran a high-octane, hysterical show. The TickleBomb Orchestra played the "Gummi-Bears" theme song! Tony Brown was a force to reckon with as the fact checker! Steve Subrizi was a white hot ball of indie folk-rock glory with his ode to Bear Grylis! Brian Ellis, Erin Jackson, Dave Keali'i, Max Kessler and  Jamila Woods were all amazing! And Lea was hysterical with her off-kilter interpretation of facts...

Mother's Day

I'm no good at holidays. I tend to send cards late, if I remember to buy them at all. I buy gifts at the last minute and, to top it off, while I love my family, I don't think anyone would begrudge my saying that I'm not terribly close to most of them.

The one exception, of course, is my mother.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm just as awful about remembering to send cards, presents, etc. to her as I am everybody else, but with her, I actually kick myself for it. Because my mom is awesome, and deserv...

CoyoteCon Reading List

Had a great time last night on the "Writing Politically" online panel for the CoyoteCon digital authors conference, with fiction writers Fraser Sherman and David Sklar. We covered a lot of territory very fast, though, and I feel I referenced a number of books quickly that the audience may have been interested in, but might not be able to find readily. The Yeats and Heinlen are easy to find. The others? Not so much.

So, here's a quick shopping list:

"Pole Dancing to Gospel Hymns" by Andrea Gibso...

Lie Back and Think of England ...

The Guardian has been fascinating reading today. Here's their final analysis of the UK's hung election today:

Today was the day Britain's political system went European. Coalition government is the norm on the continent. We'll soon find out whether the British can mange it too, or whether all those dire predictions about indecision and "weak government" turn out to be correct. We thought there was going to be a hung parliament when the exit poll came out but over the last 12 hours something s...

It's like I've always said ...

... journalism today needs more dancing.

No. Really. I always say that.

Morning Thoughts ..

Evidently, I'm going to be blathering on online about writing. Like that's anything new. My friend Deena Fisher, the force behind Drollerie Press and the wonderful online journal Membra Disjecta, is currently running a nifty project called Coyote Con, an online digital author's conference, and I'll be participating on some of the panels, mostly wearing my hat as the editor of The November 3rd Club, but also a bit as a poet and Write Bloody author.

I'll confess, I have no idea really how this'l...

Odds and Ends

From the "Reasons to Love Top Chef Masters Judge Jay Rayner, Also Known as Neil Gaiman's Evil Antimatter Universe Doppelganger" department:

"When someone says the steak was so tender it was like butter, I just want to start shouting at them. WHY IN GOD’S NAME WOULD YOU WANT TO EAT BEEF WITH THE TEXTURE OF BUTTER? If that’s what you want why not just eat, I don’t know, butter? Being able to cut a steak with a spoon is not a good thing. It’s bizarre. A steak is a piece of an animal, a big one w...

Words I Never Thought I'd Write: In Defense of Pamela Anderson

I didn't expect it, but I've found Pamela Anderson to be quite endearing on Dancing with the Stars, and I'm sorry to see her go. I'm not too sure whom I would have voted off in her stead -- Niecy Nash, maybe, who's enjoyable as all hell to watch, but not as good of a dancer. Or maybe Chad Ochocinco, who's just not grabbing me, although I'll concede he's improving. Certainly not Erin Andrews, who has been fantastic this season.

No, it's not so much that I think her being voted off is an injusti...
