More Erica
I was reminded, on Facebook, of a brief little review I wrote of Erica for OC Weekly, which later became a review of her book on Amazon:
There's an eerie, somewhat supernatural tone to Erdman's writing, hidden beneath the tough veneer of hard, modernist imagery. "he/is gargoyled," she writes of Kevin Spacey in the imminently disturbing movie, "Seven," "has mastered/the architecture of faith-/the language of churches./As his locks are picked,/he prays:/'...through me,/enter into the City."...

RIP Erica Erdman
I just received word that Erica Erdman passed away Thursday morning at her home. Writes Amelie Frank, who's had to write far too many of these lately:
We don't have any concrete information on her passing except that it appears that she died in her sleep, and it does not look like she suffered. Her roommate and fellow poet David Cooper found her Thursday night when he came home from work. I am coordinating with Erica's parents on arrangements. When I have more information, I will share...

Passing this along, but it's a good one:

10:35 am - Call for Submissions: Knocking at the Door
Knocking at the Door: Approaching the Other seeks fresh work exploring the theme of reconciling and/or coming to an understanding with the Other as it appears in all aspects of life: personal, political and societal. We want honest chronicles of your struggles to come to terms with the Other in all its forms and your sense of humor. Some of the editor’s favorite authors include Rilke, Ilya Kaminsky...

Poetry in Interesting Times ...
There has been much poetry news lately:
*As mentioned yesterday, Canadian poet and former National Poetry Slam champion Shane Koyczan read his poem "Define Canada" at the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics. NBC now has the video up (THANK YOU to everyone who provided me with links!) and I have to say, it's pretty damn impressive. Shane's peculiar brand of upbeat patriotism in this poem really shines through. Absolutely perfect for the moment.
*Many, many people have noted that the mayor o...

Out and About
Made it out to the last night of Worcester Storytellers yesterday. Shame to see the reading go: I always appreciate a room where both longer, prosier writing and shorter, more delicate work go over well. Dave Macpherson did a wonderful job with the place, and ended on an uproariously upbeat note with a presentation by "The Penny Players," doing such hits as "How to Strip For Your Husband" and the piece about a drunken Santa Claus crashing into a Jewish Senior Center. Good times ... good times...

Morning Thoughts
Good reading last night at The Q, albeit perhaps a heavier set than I originally intended. Must remember that certain new poems aren't as funny as I think they are. Actually, they're the exact opposite of funny. But I keep on giving not-funny poems funny titles, and then forgetting how heavy the poems actually are when I throw my set together. The result is ovens set to Plath. Again, happy with the set, but I think it all cut closer to the bone than I'm entirely comfortable with. Still, I sup...

38
I had made rumblings about going out tonight, but I'm kind of glad to be spending my 38th birthday at home with my wife, a nice dinner and a bottle of wine. Indeed, it's how I spent most big events during my 37th year, and while being more extroverted again is a bit of a personal goal, it feels right to let this one go quietly.
Because frankly, 37 was a costly little year. Oh, it had it's high points -- got out to see parts of the country I hadn't seen before, especially the Midwest, and got p...

Last Minute Gig, Right Here in Worcester!
I'm reading Monday at the Q Coffeehouse! Will probably read some of the new stuff I've been working on. Then, if we want to keep the party going, we can head over to Ralph's to see the amazing Cynthia French. It'll be like an appetizer before the tasty, tasty Dirty Gerund ruckus.
