June 6, 2023: Projects Galore!
Business(ish) lunch meeting today to discuss the high concept low-budget horror feature. In attendance – line producer Robbie David, production manager Cathy Lang, director John Stead, Co-Executive Producer Ivon Bartok, star and research assistant Akemi Aota, and mystery backer. We discussed budget, schedule, tax credits, crew, distributors, directors of photography, locations, post-production, Bulgaria, passive-aggressive emails, and smoked meat. Next steps – the Bulgarian budget, a discussion about tax incentives, setting meetings with distributors, and a completion of the business plan. On track to meet my end-of-June target for investors. Hopefully we lock it up quickly and can start prepping late summer.

Oh, that reminds me. I completed the first draft of my new pilot (after doing a couple of passes to implement Ivon’s notes), and have sent it off to my second reader. One more pass to incorporate THEIR notes, and then it’s off to my agent. And then from there…who knows what the future holds?
Next, I switch off to the third issue of my horror comic. The scripts for the first two issues were well-received and I’m told character designs are forthcoming.

Finished the first draft of my murder mystery pilot and I’m happy…for the most part. I still feel the ending is a little too easy, the evidence maybe a little too circumstantial, and my first reader, Ivon, agrees. We’ll take the weekend to think about it. Maybe Akemi will come up with another great idea for me!
Received some great location photos from the team in Bulgaria. VERY curious to see what that budget comes in at.
Turned around a second draft of issue #2 of my horror comic and now looking to structure issue #3. Looking forward to checking out some of the early character designs.
Next week looks heavy: Monday conference call about a couple of sci-fi scripts, Tuesday lunch meeting about the horror project, Wednesday lunch with potential director about another sci-fi project, Thursday zoom about a thriller series, and Friday general zoom meeting.

June 1, 2023: Project Update!
My horror movie intake has started to flagging only 242 films into this extended marathon. And with less than 60 to go before I hit the big 3-0-0! To be fair, I have been distracted by development work and trying to get this high concept, low budget horror movie off the ground, but I’m going to try to make a concerted effort to see things through. I don’t want to end up being known as the guy who gave up!
Almost finished a first draft of my murder mystery pilot. I feel as though I haven’t quite stuck the landing, so I am going to get a criminal mind to vet the script – specifically my buddy Ivon who is the king of true crime podcasts and documentaries. After inputting his inspired feedback, the script will be off to select readers. Rebecca, you’re on the list!
The preliminary budget on the high-concept, low-budget horror film wasn’t quite as low-budget as I had hoped. The preliminary budget came in about 20% higher than I had hoped. A second pass brought that number down, but I don’t want to compromise the quality of the project, so I’ve started to investigate other options including the possibility of shooting in Bulgaria, I was dubious at first but after doing some research into the studio, and speaking to a friend and colleague who has been working there for quite some time, I now find the prospect very promising. Their team has the script and preliminary shooting schedule and will generate their own budget sometime next week. Also, sometime next week, I’ll be sitting down to game plan with by co-exec producer, director, line producer, production manager, and investor liaison. I’d really like to lock down this business plan for the investors by end of month, but need to feel confident about the budget, the tax credits on the Canadian side, and the marketing plan. Ideally, would love to secure some interest from a distributor by then as well. Also, need to get some clarity on the music licensing which will be a huge part of this film.

Things are settling in on the honor film front. Spoke to my line producer and my director today. Tomorrow, I chat with a contact in Bulgaria. Next week, it’s a sit-down lunch to muscle through the budget and then, the week after that, it’s a lunch/dinner Tax Credit 101!

I really wanted to keep it within a specific budget range, and that seems unlikely so, at this point, I can either scrap it or consider a different shooting location – maybe Bulgaria or Serbia? What are the tax credits in Yemen like?
Received feedback on the second issue of my horror comic. So far, so good. Will stand by for further notes before revising and moving on to issue #3. Meanwhile, I await word on some other comic book projects.
Two-thirds of the way through my new pilot. In this one, I take a stab at the mystery genre. It’s a salute to shows like Murder She Wrote and the joyously wide-ranging sub-genres from cozy mysteries to furry sleuths.
When I finish this pilot, I’d like to take a break to binge watch a fantastic series. Recommend me something fantastic along the lines of other shows I’ve enjoyed – The Sopranos, The Wire, Rome, Breaking Bad. Preferably something that has completed its run, has less than 50 episodes, and aired within the last five years or so.
