May 6, 2023: Unusual Deaths!
#UnusualDeaths
In December of 1875, a mouse in a South London factory had workers in a panic. One young man tried to corral it, only to have the rodent scurry up his shirt and into his open mouth. He reflexively swallowed and the mouse proceeded to dig its way out, killing him. pic.twitter.com/3O8ed36B3y

In November of 1872, pallbearer Henry Taylor was killed by the coffin he was carrying after tripping and having the damn thing land on him, making the already solemn occasion downright grim. pic.twitter.com/gjEoPfW6KA

In 1891, Isaack Rabbanovitch made the very unwise decision to snatch a keg of vodka back from a bear who had broken into his tavern for a nightcap. Enraged, the bear hugged Isaack to death, then did the same to his two sons and daughter before nodding off. pic.twitter.com/TX59FETnhh

In 1197, Henry II, Count of Champagne, was watching a parade from his palace window when the window lattice gave way, sending him plunging to the ground below. Although the fall didn't kill him, his dwarf – who tumbled after him and landed on his back – did. pic.twitter.com/TxI0uObbah

On May 13, 1889, stage mentalist Washington Irving Bishop was killed by his own autopsy. Prone to falling into cataleptic states, he always carried a card that explained his unique condition – but the physicians who removed his brain claimed they never saw it. pic.twitter.com/Q4FqTOCqwv

The Bullet Catch is a stage magician trick that involves a gun being fired at a magician who, magically, catches the bullet with his teeth. There are varied ways in which the trick is pulled off, most commonly through the use of a blanks. 1/ pic.twitter.com/662BGtPJbv

In 581 BC, a shaman prophesied that Duke Jing of Jin would not live to eat that year's new wheat. On the day the of the harvest, Jing had the shaman executed, happily ate the new wheat – then hurried to the toilet, only to fall in and drown in a pool of dung. pic.twitter.com/n2Efv2NQFP

In 307 BC, King Wu of Qin challenged his friend Meng Yue to a test of strength that involved lifting bronze cooking pots known as dings. Ying dropped his ding and suffered a fatal injury. Meng was blamed and executed. And so was his family for good measure. pic.twitter.com/e7CPL3Olcm

King Wu Yi was notorious for disrespecting the gods, playing liubo (an ancient Chinese board game) against wooden statues of them and then really rubbing it in when they lost. The gods, notorious sore losers, eventually struck him dead with lightning in 1112 BC. pic.twitter.com/6oi4BrGjuT

The Roman Emperor Elagabalus (aka Heliogabalus) was a renown prankster. One of his most storied gags saw him use a reversible ceiling to dump tons of flowers on his unsuspecting dinner guests – smothering to death those unable to escape the flowery deluge. pic.twitter.com/DLxUcAMtjw

May 5, 2023: Festivities!
One of my oldest friends is in town for a few days so we got together in advance of my trip to Montreal (where I will, in all likelihood, see him again). Nigel is making a stopover in Toronto in advance of a stopover in Montreal and an eventual move to Lisbon, Portugal (not to be confused with Lisbon, Ohio, Lisbon, Missouri, or Lisbon, North Dakota). His business has been taking him all over the world (Dubai, Indonesia, Mexico City) and looks like he’s finally about to settle down. For time being anyway.
This is him beating me to the bill.
Today was my gal’s 18th birthday! We celebrated with some hot chocolate (for me), cappuccino (for Akemi) and Kouign-Amman (for Suji and I). Then, Akemi and I went out for Vietnamese and, of course, brought back some leftover brisker for Suji. A late afternoon walk was followed by more treats, and then dinner – pan-fried chicken livers which Suji also enjoyed. Akemi has been spending most of the day thanking everyone who has been leaving messages on suji’s IG page: @NewOldPugsuji
I continue to remain busy writing. I working on the second issue of my soon-to-be-announced horror comic, writing a (rare-for-me) procedural pilot, while doing a very deep dive on the business of Indie filmmaking. I’ve reached out to a few experienced hands for guidance as I educate myself and work towards putting together a proper business plan for investors.

May 2, 2023: Immediate Plans!
Well, the Writers Guild of America is officially on strike and I fear it may be a long one given the desperate straits many writers are facing – and the nice fat salaries and bonuses execs will be loathe to pare down. So, switching off my paid development work in favor of personal projects: that comedy procedural pilot, the comic book scripts, and putting wrangling the financing for my horror movie. With regard to the latter, I’ve someone working on a preliminary budget, but the real challenge will be the business plan. Having worked in television the entirety of my career, the indie film scene is somewhat alien to me, so I’ve reached out to a few veterans for guidance.
Speaking of veterans, former Stargate and Dark Matter director Will “Pineapple” Waring in town to work on a show. We shared a couple of pizzas and more than a few desserts at Beast Pizza the other night.
Hopefully we’ll be able to squeeze in at least one more dinner when I get back from Montreal.
Ah, yes. I’m off to Montreal for ten days. According to her rheumatologist, my mother has sciatica and should limit her movements. And since my sis is heading out of town for a few weeks, looks like I’ll be back in my hometown taking care of mom until the 16th.
Putting together a list of some of my favorite things I’ll need to schlep with me: cheeses, avocado, supplements, chocolate, May have to pick up my kefir and full fat yogurt when I get into town.

May 1, 2023: The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Marathon, XX1 – XXXIII + Halloween of Horror, Thanksgiving of Horror, and Not It!
#TheSimpsons Treehouse of Horror XXXII
Season 33: I enjoyed the Edward Gorey-inspired stylings of the Telltale Bart and found the Dead Ringer segment a cut above the others.
Favorite line – Grandpa Simpson: "This is the kind of movie you watch in a museum when your feet hurt." pic.twitter.com/Zo1SgEmdSl
— Joseph Mallozzi

#TheSimpsons Halloween of Horror
Season 27: Like a full episode Treehouse segment. A little more "messagey" and, thus, a little less funny, but above average overall.
Favorite line – Ralphie: "I saw an areola!" pic.twitter.com/OFiAU4r2db

#TheSimpsons "Not It"
Season 34: Our Simpsons horror-fest concludes on a high note with this surprisingly well done spoof of Stephen King's It.
Favorite line – Homer: "SuperintendKid Chalmers!" pic.twitter.com/FHptKVuCC5

April 29, 2023: The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Marathon, XXV – XXX!
#TheSimpsons Treehouse of Horror XXV
Season 26: School is Hell wasn't bad. The Clockwork Orange parody, while technically accomplished, lacked laughs. The Others = meh.
Favorite line – Marge: "I feel like a ghost the way you haven't been paying attention to me. Plus I'm dead." pic.twitter.com/vZnlpcC5E7
— Joseph Mallozzi

#TheSimpsons Treehouse of Horror XXVIII
Season 29: The Coraline parody looked great even if it was light on laughs. "MMM…Homer", while disturbing, had some surprising laughs and was the highlight of the episode.
Favorite line – Homer: "On the other hand…is my other finger." pic.twitter.com/Q2XpOAWuDL

#TheSimpsons Treehouse of Horror XXX
Season 30: No love for the first two segments, but I did enjoy the Shape of Water parody, even if it wasn't all that funny.
Favorite line – Kang: "This thing is full of rats…Very thoughtful. Thank you." pic.twitter.com/JNYKxjSPJo

April 28, 2023: What Lies Ahead!
We’ve been approved for adoption by the Pug Nation of L.A.! Now, all that awaits is a careful selection of our newest family member – and the opportunity to fly down to L.A. to pick him/her up. Delaying matters is a side trip I may have to make to Montreal for a week or so. Also, the looming WGA strike does throw some cold water on my travel plans. Ideally, I would schedule meetings with production companies and broadcasters while I’m in town but if the Writer’s Guild does strike, that will be out of the question. And so, more than likely, it’ll be a one or two day stay. Maybe a quick catch up with friends over a lunch or dinner. And then it’ll be back to Toronto, pug in tow.
Speaking of the entertainment industry, I posted this quickie twitter thread last night –
As Artificial Intelligence evolves and refines, we'll see technological breakthroughs across the board – breakthroughs that will quickly drive down the costs of production as more efficiencies are realized and once costly and time-consuming processes will become achievable. 2/

At present, A.I. isn't a threat to creatives in my industry. They're a threat to the gatekeepers, the decision-makers who choose what gets made and what gets cancelled. Right now, the suits have the power because they have the money. 4/

You won't need a studio or broadcaster to green light your movie. And you won't need to rely on their distribution arm to get your movie seen when you have social media platforms with millions of potential subscribers. 6/

Which is why now would be a great time to start building your own I.P. Novels, comic books, web-comics – all offer opportunity to establish YOUR worlds, YOUR stories and characters. So that, when the time comes, YOU can bring them to life and profit from your creations. 8/
