August 20, 2023: Suji Sunday!

Out and about, nursing her ouchie.

Time to brush those teeth!

Ready to head out.

Guarding her yolk.

Egg time – before and after.

August 19, 2023: Unusual Deaths and Snacks!

#UnusualDeaths
In July 2000, a securities administrator accidentally locked herself in a basement vault. In an attempt to summon help, she pulled the fire alarm – which automatically triggered the fire suppressant system that sucked the air from the vault and filled it with CO2. pic.twitter.com/Wuxrnd2P2o

Breaking into the industry – some advice!

To be honest there are various ways to get your foot in the door, and none of them are easy. They invariably involve convincing someone to take a chance on you, read your stuff, and champion you. Sometimes, that may be an agent. 2/

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) August 18, 2023

A spec script. An original. Maybe a series overview/pitch deck for that original series. Then you have to find someone to read it. First, get it read by a fellow writer or, preferably, writers, who can offer honest feedback. 4/

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) August 18, 2023

The "easiest" way to get yourself and your script in front of these decision-makers is through an agent, but to get an agent, you have to convince them to represent you. Most agents won't read unsolicited submissions. You need to find ones who do – 6/

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) August 18, 2023

The same applies for all of the individuals previously mentioned – executives, producers, show runners. They will, to be honest, be reluctant to read material that hasn't been submitted through an agent simply because they have so much to read already 8/

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) August 18, 2023

One approach I offer to getting your foot in the door is somewhat unusual, but I mention it because it's how I ended up writing for television. I did so by writing for animation first. I queried about a hundred different production companies and studios – 10/

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) August 18, 2023

I sold several pitches, wrote several scripts, then pitched to other animated shows, made more sales, wrote more scripts. I eventually became a story editor for animated shows. From there, I transitioned to live-action teen sitcom. 12/

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) August 18, 2023

Over the course of my many years working on the franchise, I wrote numerous scripts and worked my way up from co-producer to, eventually, show-runner. 14/

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) August 18, 2023

Since then, I've continued writing, looking to sell my next show. I have written many great pilots that didn't sell. I was hired to write many great pilots that didn't. I am in the process of writing some great pilots that probably won't sell. 16/

August 14, 2023: Your Account Has Been Locked!

Yesterday morning, I woke up to the news that my twitter account had been locked.  I experienced a trifecta of emotions in rapid succession: disbelief, anger, then relief.  Disbelief because my twitter feed is relatively benign – unless you happen to be a politician.  Anger at the thought of the 12+ years of tweeting history that would disappear.  And then, ultimately, relief at the prospect that destiny had decided my fate and that I would no longer have to spend hours seeking out enlightening material for daily tweets like #THISDAYINSUPERVILLAINHISTORY, #UNUSUAL DEATHS, #ARCHAICINSULTOFTHEDAY, rhe Test Your Spaceship IQ thread (that is now roughly 450 spaceships deep) and, of course, the weird culinary Yes?No.  I figured with my twitter gone, I would probably delete facebook (which I rarely use) and instagram (which I only use to cross-post Stargate-related clips).  Eventually, whenever that Stargate reboot happens, reddit as well.  However, in terms of time and effort, twitter has been a big investment and losing access to it would free things up.  On the one hand, there’s nothing better for immediate access and interaction with fandom, and it’s a great, instant source of information.  On the other hand, it just sucks up so much of my day.  So, in the end, it was a bittersweet acceptance.

Until I read on an realized it was only temporarily locked.

When I first saw the notification, I immediately assumed it was the Germans.  But, no, it wasn’t the Germans.  It was a copyright strike against me for a k-pop video clip I posted sometime last year.  I was directed to the strike notice and then, presuming I’d been sufficiently chastised, TPTB restored access to my account.

The copyright strike is weird.  I feature a portion of a song (often considerably less than an iTunes sampling) and always offer links back to the original Music Video as well as links to purchase or stream the song.  I, perhaps incorrectly, assumed it would be a great way for the artists to get a little exposure in a new market.

Stranger still, the song that was copyright was for a group that is now defunct.

Anyway, all this to say…carry on.

Today’s Yes/No…

August 13, 2023: Suji Sunday!

Hanging out with coco.

Two old-timers commiserating.

Suji continues to slow down.  She now sleeps through most days….

She’s also having an increasingly harder time chewing and swallowing.  We suspect it’s the neural paralysis that robs her of her ability to walk that is slowly working its way up her spine.  So this is how dinner usually goes now…

Stil, she’s happy, seemingly always hungry, and always up for a good massage…

She’s pretty demanding, but still a sweetheart…
