Save the Goldfish!

I shared the below story (true story!) with one of my best friends, and I decided to share it with you lucky mob (haha!) Who knows, this might happen to you (I mean your goldfish, not, you know, YOU)

At work in our Palliative Care garden we have a lovely goldfish pond, but one of our goldfish went belly-up. As in, floating on its back or nose-down - and still breathing and trying to swim.

I rang up my trusty vet and spoke to the vet nurse and it looked like he (she?) had swimmer's bladder - to be fair, the nurse gave me the proper name but I couldn't remember it, so my workmate and I were Googling on the computer that day when we had some time and found it, known as 'swimmer's bladder'. They get too much air in them from gulping fish flakes on the surface and fill with air, and their balance is affected. Get this - the treatment is taking them off fish flakes and giving them green peas! The reversal was always iffy, but I decided to give it a go, so brought the fish home and put him in a small tank on the kitchen bench, dutifully feeding him green peas. Evie promptly took up position on top of the tank but the fish didn't seem worried - he was floating upside down poor bugger! So he was basically in ICU. He was doing really well and after a couple of days, he actually did a few laps upright, was eating his peas okay, poohing green pea (let's be honest, fish pooh), and I moved him into Medical ward. Unfortunately, that night he took a dive and started to deteriorate, so I shifted him into Palliative care. Mum and I were leaning over the tank urging him to hang on, but alas, he gasped a few times and died. Poor little bugger. At least we gave it a go!

Anyway, if this happens to you - I mean your FISH - check with your vet. You can try the green peas - I just got 2 out at a time, thawed them in the 'fridge, then popped them out of their skins, squished them up so the fish could swallow them, then dropped one in the tank. I wasn't really sure how much to feed it, so I did one pea in the morning and one at night. But please take care to ask your vet first! I am NOT an expert on goldfish!!!

Update, Writing, $$$

Do you find, like us, that when one thing happens it tends to escalate to other things?
Take our washing machine, for example...
After 10 years (yep, found the receipt), it died. Kicked the bucket. Went to the big washing factory in the sky. This meant we had to buy another washing machine - which is rather painful, as I'm such a tightwad.
Anyway, on Friday we bought a new washing machine, had it delivered, and the nice delivery man connected it for us.
This is when things went a little lopsided...
When he unscrewed the hose, the cold tap, even though turned off, had cold water spraying out with a LOT of force. I had to turn the main off so he could connect the hose without drowning us all. He informed us it looked like the valve had gone in the washing machine.
This, in turn, meant the plumber. He couldn't come until Mon but that was okay, because the tap wasn't leaking now, so we could wait.
Saturday morning we did washing. By Saturday evening water was trickling out from under the washing machine. Crikey Moses, the tap was starting to leak! I wrapped a tea towel around it to soak it all up and we both checked that a waterfall hadn't erupted during the night. It didn't. But what confused me was the fact that the tap was dry, the hose was dry leading down from the tap, and the tea towel was dry. *scratching head*. The washing machine was empty of any water *more scratching of head* yet there was a definite slow leak somewhere.
We made it through the weekend and on Mon the plumber came out...to discover that yes, we did indeed need a new tap, but the leak was originating from the hose connected to the BACK of the washing machine - it wasn't on tightly. *DUH!*. So he tightened it, and replaced both taps (I didn't think there was any sense replacing one when they were both old), and we also had him replace the washers in the shower taps. Hey, I figure if we're paying for the hour, let's get done what needed to get done! And I'm not completely mean, I did book that into his appt previously ;-)
So now we have a new washing machine and no leaking. But seriously...RIP old washing machine>new washing machine>leak>plumber>$$$.
Now, even better, we had clothes on the line overnight and 2 bush fires have erupted nearby, with lovely gusting winds and smoke overlaying everything...and the clothes needing to be re-washed because they stink of smoke (kind of like the house at the moment). So that new washing machine is going to get a workout!
***
And now, other news...

I know I said I was going to start work on the next Hope Bay novel, but circumstances have changed that plan. I still have 16 H&S books to rewrite, and at the rate I'm currently going of 1 or 2 of this series a year, that means 8 years at the very least before I get them all done, and that is unacceptable to me. So I'm going to work on a couple more H&S books before starting the next Hope Bay novel. I'm sorry for any disappointment this causes readers of the contemporary romances. But I am still working on things, never fear, the contemp romances are not gone! But I only have so many hours in the day, and life is MAD at the moment both at work and home. Does anyone have a way of making 24 hrs into 48hrs a day?!

Mercenary Links

Hi all

Just a quick note before I have something to eat and get ready for work.

Mercenary is now available in ebook from Smashwords, Amazon, iBooks, Barnes & Noble and Kobo.

Please be aware that it will only be available at these places for about a month to six weeks (depending on sales) before it goes to Kindle Unlimited, where most of the scifi romance readers seem to be.

Also, if you're not sure about scifi romance but want to give it a go, the first book, Outlaw, is available at Amazon for only 99cents for a short time, before it flips back to US $3.99.

Sorry, I don't know the html coding to put the links up here for you, or I would (yet another thing on my 'To Do' list!) but all links are available onmy website http://www.angelaverdenius.com

Most of you know this by now, but for those who don't know, Outlaw & Mercenary are books 1 and 2 of the Heart's Desire Soul Destroyed series. There are 18 books in the series so far, but only the first 2 are available as I pulled them from circulation to do a major overhaul of the series. This includes not only the covers, but the story itself as well - so rewrites, scenes added, scenes changed, details changed, and re-editing. Some books will have major changes, some minor.

I'm hoping Amazon will alert those buyers who have the previous books so they can get the updated ones. I got notice that they are reviewing Mercenary and Outlaw now and will let me know in about a week’s time.

So, until then, maties, I'm having a two week break from writing - during this time I'm working the day job, reading, watching TV and starting a Diamond Mosaic Painting I've been dying to try!!!

cheers

Mercenary is Up!

Whoooo!! YES! Finally, I have finished re-writing the book, Mercenary.

This was not just an editing job. This was a complete revision and re-write. I’ve added scenes and changed some scenes, and fleshed it out a lot more.

The beauty of being able to revise/rewrite this series, is that not only am I catching mistakes, but I'm able to build more into the storylines. For example, with the previous version, there were things happening that didn't quite make sense until you got to book 18. I don’t believe that’s fair to the readers (and being a reader myself, I know that’d annoy me personally) so this time I've included a lot more detail and explanation, so it's clearer.

I'm hoping people like it. I LOVE the cover. Melody Simmons did an awesome job, and has done all the covers for the entire series. Yes, people, I have ALL the covers already and they are ALL gorgeous. I can’t thank her enough. While I chose the characters, she blended them into such beautiful backgrounds and completely captured the feel of the stories.

Interestingly, sci-fi romance doesn't seem to be a popular subgenre. Years ago I remember it was a large part of the paranormal romance rage, but seemed to dwindle away over time, which is a shame as there is so much scope with sci-fi romances.

For those who might be hesitant to dip their toes into this subgenre of sci-fi romance, you might want to try Outlaw, the first book in the series, which I have put up for sale for 99c at Amazon for a few weeks. I just changed the price this morning so I think it can take up to 72 hrs for the changes to take effect, but check it out in-between as it often takes less time.

Mercenary is now on Amazon and Smashwords for sale, and will be available soon at Kobo, iBooks and Barnes & Noble. Please note - I have found that most sci-fi romance readers seem to be on Kindle Unlimited, but because I know some readers prefer Kobo/B&N/iBooks and Smashwords, Mercenary will be going up at these places for about 4weeks before I flip them to KU. Unless, of course, suddenly sales sky-rocket at these other places ;-) Or at least I get enough sales to warrant leaving it there. But so far, like I said, most sci-fi romance readers seem to be at KU.

Okay, I'm off to update the website and do a few more things. I have an awesome TV horror series I’m halfway through, the Diamond Mosaic painting I want to try, and some good books calling my name. After all this I’ll be taking 2 - 3 weeks off to enjoy my downtime in-between the day job, but also to do some other chores badly needing doing. Then after that I’ll start the next Hope Bay novel.

But I will still be on-line even during my downtime, so drop me a line if you wish!

Cheers!

Update, Bum Finger - seriously

Update on the writing front!

Okay, nothing too exciting, still doing the rewrite and re-edits of the 2nd H&S scifi romance book, but I'm getting through it!

My bum finger, however, that's a whole other ball game. Is it a whitlow? An infected finger? Or - horrors of horrors, surely it couldn't be...GOUT?????? I'm trying not to freak myself out. It's only sore, swollen and red from the first knuckle down, so I'm giving it a day or two before I hightail it to the doctor. I mean, if it's a whitlow, it should come to a head soon. If it's something else, well, I guess my finger will just drop off before I see the doctor. Once I see it drooping and waving goodbye to me, it's time. But maybe it won't do that. Maybe it'll just, you know, go away.
The swelling, not the finger.

I've been advised by another nurse to put a baking soda poultice on it, so I'm doing that in a minute.

Meanwhile, I'm typing with my forefinger carefully kept out of the way. I've only bumped it twice today with teeth-grinding results, so so far, so good.

Ahhh, life, you do know how to give me lemons!

BTW - good advice - do NOT Google pictures of whitlows! Freaked msyelf out yet again...

Catch Up!

Well, here we are, almost through January already. How freaky is that? I do hope the New Year has been a good start to the - well, New Year - for you all.

Our weather has been all over the shop, from 44.5C to 24C in a matter of days. (112.1F - 75.2F). The other day I was boiling, today I'm sitting here wearing a cardigan. Go figure.

So, writing-wise...I'm partway through re-editing/re-writing the second H&S and want to get it done ASAP, so I can write a new book. So 3 days off and nose to the keyboard.

Reading-wise...partway through Leverage in Death, I do like JD Robb! Ahhh, Galahad the fat cat, you make me smile! I do enjoy being back with the gang again, even though the mystery isn't the nicest - but what murder mystery is ever really nice, right? But intriguing! That is the word.

Movie/TV-wise...currently re-watching Friends. Just finished season 4 and ready to start season 5. Loving it! Such a more innocent age when no one took offense at things so easily. Laughing and commiserating with the characters.

Kindle-wise...my original keyboard Kindle is slowly dying on me. The switch is broken and if I'm not careful to push it back (it won't spring back), the Kindle is still on when I think it's off and the battery is dead when I go to read, so it's constant checking and recharging the battery. I do have a second Kindle, but I need to go back to Smashwords and Amazon and reload about 1000+ ebooks onto the 2nd Kindle. GULP! That's going to take a long time as I don't do WiFi so I'm guessing I have to do manual downloads and transfers, unable to do a bulk one. Have to check that out, but I'm thinking it's going to be a looooooong process.

Back at work, holiday over, it seems like I never had one! LOL I've also sliced my thumb while cutting carrots, had to use a LOT of pressure to stop the bleeding. Now I can't have an open wound while working at the hospital, and sticking plasters fall off because of frequent hand washing, so I get a glove from work every shift, cut a finger off and use Micropore to stick it onto my thumb. Works well and a blue thumb looks pretty impressive. Trying to top that little episode, I slammed/scraped my finger along the corner of a bench while vacuuming which resulted in a swollen and bruised forefinger (but that still works, so after a bit of swearing I can still use it). Cracked my right shin against a table leg and whacked my right calf on - well, have no idea what, but both legs now have some pretty impressive bruising.

I'm greeting the New Year a little battered and bruised but hey! I'M STILL STANDING!

Okay, so just wanted to touch base! Now it's back to hanging out one of the covers from the cats' cushions (thanks to whichever furry spewed up on it and let it dry) and back to editing.

cheers!

Merry Christmas

Hi all

I'm going off-line for a few days over Christmas, but before I go, I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas!
Be safe if you're travelling.
Remember your furry (scaly, feathered, finned etc) friends and make sure they're taken care of if you're away, and snuggle them close while you're home.
Say Merry Christmas to your families for me.
Whether you're having a busy or a quiet time, on your own or with heaps of rellies and friends around, know that you're an important cog in this big world of ours, we all leave our footprints in the sands of life and an impression on someone.
Mum and I are celebrating Christmas quietly, just the two of us and the furries, with cold meat and salad (it's summer Down Under). Going to watch a few movies, read, and relax.

Merry Christmas!

cheers

Genius Move!

So I hate washing cars. Loathe it. Freakin' HATE HATE HATE it.

Bit strong, you might say. Bit lazy, you might say. Bit stupid, you might say.

I say I HATE washing the car.

Which is why today, when it started raining a bit, I parked my car outside in the rain so it got a wash courtesy of nature.

You might be gobsmacked by that admission.

I call it a genius move.

Just sayin'...
