Saturday Night Cinema: The Flight of the Phoenix

Tonight's Saturday Night Cinema selection is the taut suspense thriller, The Flight of the Phoenix. This disaster film raises frightening questions about leadership when a planeload of men goes down in the middle of the Sahara desert in a devastating accident. It is an absorbing study of behavior under enormous pressure and the code of honor.

"This is a different kind of action movie, but it's all the better for it."

Directed by Robert Aldrich, the all-star cast includes James Stewart, Peter Finch, Richard Attenborough, Ernest Borgnine, Dan Duryea, George Kennedy .....

Based on Elleston Trevor's novel, The Flight of the Phoenix opens with a well-staged plane crash in the middle of the Sahara desert. The pilot (James Stewart) and the navigator (Richard Attenborough) do their best to maintain order among the survivors, a group of oil men not well-suited for survival in the desert wastes. Some of those who appear to be the most resourceful reveal themselves to be inept or cowardly, while other less prepossessing types -- notably bespectacled Standish (Dan Duryea) -- demonstrate surprising inner reserves of strength. The ultimate fate of the survivors rests in the hands of Heinrich Dorfmann (Hardy Kruger), who uses the wreckage of the old plane to design a new one. Swarthmore Jewish students break with pro-Jewish, pro-Israel Hillel policies

Another stunning indictment of the American Jewish diaspora, as if this weren't enough.

More of the liberal Jews' pernicious influence on the next generation of self-hating Jews. As if the Jewish people didn't have enough enemies, reckless and godless Jews are giving birth to our enemies. Clearly, these Jewish kids lack Jewish education and are sorely lacking in truth and history.

These little wanna-be Jew-haters don't want to work with the non-partisan AIPAC because they said it "didn't seem to be the way to build the diverse political community that we wanted," said Wolfsun. Genocide and Jew-hatred are now under the aegis of "diversity."

Where are the calls from Muslim students for speakers in support of Israel and against jihad, clitoridectomies and honor violence?

Jewish students at Swarthmore College have become the first in the nation to break with the global student association Hillel and agree to open their doors to groups and speakers who do not support Israel.

The Swarthmore student board unanimously voted to renounce Hillel International's restrictions, which bar chapters from sponsoring events, hosting speakers, or partnering with groups that oppose Israel's right to exist or support a movement for universities to end investments in Israel because of its policies toward the Palestinians.

Students at the liberal Quaker college say they wanted to start a dialogue on Israel-Palestinian issues by holding joint events or inviting speakers who may have differing opinions about Israel.

"We felt like we needed to stand up for what we believe and the values we've always held," said Joshua Wolfsun, a board member of the 100-student group.

Wolfsun said the entire board supported the resolution, though only seven of the 13 members were present for the vote Sunday.

The issue of whether Jewish student groups on U.S. campuses should be engaged with groups and speakers critical of Israel's policies toward the Palestinians has been building since 2010, when Hillel International issued its new policy.

The move then was largely a response to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which supports university divestment and has been gaining support on American campuses.

Last spring, students at Harvard University formed a movement called "Open Hillel," which challenges the partnership guidelines from Hillel International, the largest student Jewish group, with about 550 chapters worldwide.

Swarthmore's Hillel is in a unique position because it does not accept any money from Hillel International. It is supported by an endowment and funds from Swarthmore's student activities budget.

Its resolution states, in part: "All are welcome to walk through our doors and speak with our name and under our roof, be they Zionist, anti-Zionist, post-Zionist, or non-Zionist."

Hillel International president Eric D. Fingerhut is expected to meet next semester with the Swarthmore students.

In a letter to the group, Fingerhut wrote: "Let me be very clear - 'anti-Zionists' will not be permitted to speak using the Hillel name or under the Hillel roof, under any circumstances."

Fingerhut said that while debate on the many issues facing Israel was welcome, "Hillel International does draw a line."

That line includes not partnering or hosting speakers and groups that deny the right of Israel to exist as a Jewish and democratic state with secure and recognized borders; delegitimize, demonize or apply a double standard to Israel; support boycott of, divestment from, or sanctions against Israel; exhibit a pattern of disruptive behavior at campus events; or foster an atmosphere of incivility.

David Eden, a Hillel International spokesman, said the organization has hosted "robust discussions" with people with different viewpoints.

But "Hillel has boundaries, and those boundaries stop at anyone that advocates for the destruction of the state of Israel and they stop at hate speech," he said.

As an example, he said a pro-Palestinian campus group, Students for Justice in Palestine, has plastered eviction notices on dorm rooms of Jewish students on various college campuses "as a symbolic thing. . . . We find that unacceptable."

Some members of Jewish student groups have sought to oppose the Hillel policy, and nearly 1,000 individuals have signed onto "Open Hillel," which seeks to increase campus debate.

Swarthmore Hillel has no events or gatherings planned yet to flout the international policy.

But its leaders said the move was prompted by two recent developments - a decision by Harvard Hillel last month to cancel a speech by former Israeli Knesset Speaker Avraham Burg because the event was cosponsored by a student group that supports BDS, and Hillel International's recent announcement that it was partnering with the influential American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) to promote pro-Israel views on U.S. campuses.

Collaborating with AIPAC "didn't seem to be the way to build the diverse political community that we wanted," said Wolfsun.

Last year, he noted, Students for Peace and Justice in Palestine held a simulated checkpoint with volunteers to show what Palestinians must go through in the West Bank.

Ben Bernard-Herman, a member of SPJP at Swarthmore, said he welcomed the change and that it would make it easier to ask questions and discuss the "conflict with Israel being a democracy and a Jewish state."

"More students will feel their opinions will be valued," he said.

Some see the break as a generational divide.

Emily Unger, the Harvard graduate who cofounded Open Hillel, said students of her generation have only known Israel as "being very powerful . . . and being an occupying power in Palestinian territories," while she understood that older generations who witnessed Israel's difficult beginnings might feel the need for a vigorous defense.

But she said Jewish values support having an open debate even with people you strongly disagree with.

Eden, the international group's spokesman, agreed.

"It's very good and proper for every generation to question what has happened in the past and what happens in the future," he said. "But the debate has to be done in a civil manner and with groups that do not promote the end of a Jewish state."

British Jihad Preacher Anjem Choudary Incites To Violence And Jihad, Calls For Conquest Of West; In Tweet, He Defends Opinion Expressed By Accused Islamist During His Trial That U.S. Is 'A Theoretic Practical & Battlefield

On Twitter, British Pro-Jihad Islamist Anjem Choudary - Whose Network Is Regarded As 'Single Biggest Gateway To Terrorism' For European Fighters In Syria - Incites To Violence And Jihad, Calls For Conquest Of West; In Tweet, He Defends Opinion Expressed By Accused Islamist During His Trial That U.S. Is 'A Theoretic & Practical Battlefield'

The December 2013 "Tackling Extremism In The UK" report by the Prime Minister's Task Force on Tackling Radicalism And Extremism states that authorities "have removed over 18,000 items of online terrorist propaganda and intervened more often than ever before to limit the opportunities for hate preachers to spread their messages" and adds, "Extremist propaganda is too widely available, particularly online, and has a direct impact on radicalising individuals."

However, Choudary is still actively tweeting. While his group Muslims Against Crusades has been banned for over two years (see MEMRI Special Dispatch No. 4278, UK Home Office Bans 'Terror Organization' Muslims Against Crusades; Group Spokesman Anjem Choudary Still Communicating Via Twitter, YouTube, November 11, 2011) and while its Twitter account was shut down at that time,Choudary himself continues to tweet prolifically, embracing this modern Western tool with impunity while denouncing the West.This is despite the fact that the U.K. government and security officials are discussing bans against him.

According to Choudary's Twitter account, he is "a Muslim who believes that Islam is something we must believe in (Tawheed), live by (Shari'ah) and struggle and sacrifice for (by way of Daw'ah and Jihad)."

 

In addition to tweeting his views to his followers, Choudary uses Twitter for disseminating and linking to his videos on YouTube, for announcing collaboration with other jihadi groups, and for calling on his followers in the U.K. and U.S. to kill opponents of radical Islam.  

The November 2011 MEMRI report focused on his tweets, which included calls for a return to the Caliphate; for shari'a law to replace the U.S. Constitution; for Islam to conquer the White House and U.K.; for Islam to take over the world; and for Allah to destroy the enemies of Islam. He also tweeted praise for the late sheikhs Anwar Al-Awlaki and Osama bin Laden, and much more.

In one notable tweet, dated November 4, 2011, Choudary warns those who "support" Charlie Hebdo, the French satirical political weekly – which published an attack on radical Islam, with Islam's Prophet Muhammad as "guest editor" and as a result had its offices firebombed and its website cyber-attacked – to "take lessons from Theo Van Gogh." Van Gogh, the Dutch film director, was assassinated by jihadi Mohammed Bouyeri in November 2004 as a result of his film Submission, which criticized the treatment of women in Islam. (see Appendix I to review these tweets).

The following report highlights Choudary's tweets from the past year. They include calls for jihad; calls for shari'a law to replace democracy, including stoning to deathand cutting off criminals' hands; for the conquest of the West; for non-Muslims to pay the jizya tax to Muslim rulers; support for terrorist attacks inside the U.S. and U.K.; he expresses his delight in manifestations of Allah's wrath against the West, such as "tornados, floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes," and calls for Western leaders, including President Obama and Prime Minister Cameron, to convert to Islam.

Choudary Tweets About Followers Who Attacked Non-Muslims; Says Jihadis Consider U.K. "Theoretic & Practical Battlefield"

According to a December 9, 2013 report, Islamic converts Jordan Horner, 19, and Ricardo MacFarlane, 26, admitted to being part of a "Muslim Patrol," a  group of vigilantes opposing Western culture on the streets of London's East End, and were sent to prison for harassing, threatening, and assaulting a number of people. Choudary said that the men regularly attended his lectures, that "they didn’t do anything wrong" and that what they did was "commendable." He added, "I don’t condemn them at all. They are upstanding, upright members of the Muslim community. Their character is immaculate, they are fantastic individuals."

Following the incident, he tweeted, referring to one of the defendants: "Mujahid adopts the Islamic opinion that there is no covenant of security in the UK [i.e. between the mujahideen and the U.K.] & hence considers it [i.e. the U.K.] a theoretic & practical battlefield"; "From Mujahid's own words its clear that UK foreign policy is what motivated him to do what he did & the view of Al-Qaeda on the covenant etc"; and "Mujahid in court yesterday said: 1. He was never a member of Al-Muhajiroun 2. He disagrees with me on the covenant of Security in the UK [i.e. between Islam and the U.K.]." He also tweeted a link to the report on the trial, which quoted him.

Choudary Tweets About Woolwich Beheading

On May 22, 2013, Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale attacked and beheaded Private Lee Rigby on a street in Woolwich, U.K; the attack was caught on video. Media reports revealed that one of the perpetrators, Michael Adebolajo, was a student of Choudary's.

This was not the first time that one of Choudary's followers has been linked to terrorism cases in the U.K. Others include Richard Dart, converted to Islam by Choudary and now serving a six-year prison sentence for plotting terror attacks and attempting to attend training camps in Pakistan; Abdul Muhid, who was convicted of soliciting murder during Danish Embassy anti-cartoon protests, and was later convicted of fundraising for terrorism; and Abu Izzadeen, aka Trevor Brooks, who recently completed a prison term for inciting terrorism in his sermons at London's Regents Park mosque.

Obama-backed Jihadists Slaughter Religious Minorities in Syria

Where are the Congressional resolutions against the Muslims' ethic cleansing of religious minorities in Syria (Egypt, Libya, Lebanon, the Central African Republic, Nigeria etc.)?

An attack by Islamist rebels has left at least 10 people dead over the past two days in the Syrian town of Adra, activists and eyewitnesses say.

Most of the victims were from minority sects, reports said.

State media said on Friday that the army had launched a "broad offensive" in the direction of Adra.

Adra and the surrounding area have been the scene of heavy fighting between government and rebels in recent days.

Adra, around 21km (13 miles) from Damascus, is a religiously mixed town and reports say many of the civilians killed were from the same Alawite minority as President Bashar al-Assad, as well as some belonging to the Druze community.

At least one pro-regime fighter was also killed in the clashes.

One woman in Adra told Reuters armed men from the Islamic Front and al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front brigades entered her family's house on Thursday and took her son.

The militants said her son would be returned, but he was still missing on Thursday afternoon, she said.

'Terrorising of civilians'

The attack comes amid intense clashes around the Syrian capital in recent months, many of which have been won by the regime.

While the initial character of the uprising against Mr Assad in 2011 was not sectarian, Islamist rebel brigades are now at the forefront of fighting the government.

Earlier this week, two Spanish journalists were kidnapped near the Turkish border by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), a radical Islamist group also linked to al-Qaeda.

Activists said leading human rights lawyer Razan Zaytouna was also abducted near Damascus on Tuesday along with three other people.

There was no claim of responsibility for the abduction, but Ms Zaytouna is reported to have recently received threats from Islamist rebel groups.

On Friday the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay condemned the "increasing trend of abductions and enforced disappearances" in Syria on both sides of the conflict.

"Families of these detainees have in many cases had no word about the whereabouts of their loved ones and do not know if they are dead or alive... This kind of terrorising of civilians must stop," she said.

Imposing Islam on the secular marketplace. If a Muslim won't pick up a passenger with a dog (or with alcohol, for that matter), then he shouldn't be a taxi driver. It's just that simple. If he wants to live under the sharia, then he should not leave his control-ridden native land.

It's not just Canada: Muslim cabdrivers in the US have sought to impose these same sharia restrictions.

Muslim taxi cab drivers claim they can't drive blind people with dogs because in Islam dogs are considered 'unclean.'

 In Saskatoon, Canada, Muslim taxi drivers are refusing to give rides to blind people with seeing-eye dogs. The drivers have been citing religious grounds, saying dogs are considered "unclean" animals in Islam.

Mike Simmonds, who has been blind for close to 10 years, requires a guide dog with him at all times. He reported to the Sun newspaper that he is bitterly disappointed after taxi drivers at the station by his home have repeatedly refused to give him a ride.

Simmonds turned to the taxi company's management, and was told that the company has no guidelines forbidding discrimination against dog owners. After he was refused by taxis 3 times, Simmonds submitted a complaint to the Saskatchewan Committee of Human Rights.

Muslim antagonism towards dogs is not a new thing in Canada. In 2012, Toronto police arrested a Jew after he shoved back a Muslim who had punched him for not moving his “unclean” dog further away from Muslim women during an anti-Israel rally.

Canine cruelty in the Muslim world was highlighted during the Muslim Brotherhood protests in Egypt, as in late October protesters were found to be using "puppy bombs" by dipping dogs in gasoline and setting them on fire.

Muslims on the rampage ... again. This time Bangladesh. They are wilding, rioting, targeting Hindus (non-Muslims always are the target) in protest of the execution of a jihad chief, Abdul Quader Mollah, who was hanged for war crimes. Pakistani soldiers, aided by Mollah, killed at least 3 million people and raped 200,000 women during the nine-month war against Pakistan in 1971.

The Muslim political party leader said in a statement that "people would take revenge on this killing by establishing Islam in Bangladesh." Well, he got that right. It is a vicious form of revenge.

DHAKA, Bangladesh — An Islamist political party has vowed to deepen the role of Islam in Bangladesh to avenge the execution of a party leader who was hanged for war crimes committed during the country's 1971 war of independence against Pakistan.

Abdul Quader Mollah, 65, was hanged Thursday night in a case that has exacerbated the explosive political divide in Bangladesh, an impoverished country of 160 million. Mollah was a leader of the party, Jamaat-e-Islami, and a key member of the opposition.

Opponents of Jamaat-e-Islami say it is a fundamentalist group with no place in a secular country. Bangladesh is predominantly Muslim, but is governed by largely secular laws based on British common law.

The execution sparked violent protests Friday as activists torched homes and businesses belonging to government supporters in a fresh wave of bloodshed ahead of elections next month. At least five people died in the violence.

 

Meanwhile, hundreds of people rejoiced in the streets of the capital, Dhaka, and said justice had been served.

In an editorial, Bangladesh's English-language Daily Star newspaper congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for trying and executing Mollah "40 long years" after he committed his crimes.

A Jamaat-e-Islami leader, Makbul Ahmed, said in a statement late Thursday that "people would take revenge on this killing by establishing Islam in Bangladesh, which is stained with the blood of Abdul Quader Mollah."

"I urge all the people who support the cause of the Islamic movement to show utmost patience to build a strong resistance," Ahmed said.

Jamaat-e-Islami says Mollah's trial was politically motivated and an attempt to eliminate Islamic parties. Those who support the execution say he was hanged for serious crimes, and that the punishment had nothing to do with Islam.

An analyst said attempts by the government to neutralize Jamaat-e-Islami could backfire, and that the party could become more radicalized despite Hasina's determination to suppress fundamentalist groups.

"Jamaat-e-Islami as a political party has been in operation for a long time, so it's natural that it will hit back with what it has in its possession when you hit it in an extreme way," political analyst Ataur Rahman said.

Mollah was the first person to be hanged for war crimes in Bangladesh under an international tribunal established in 2010 to investigate atrocities stemming from the independence war.

Jamaat-e-Islami activists on Friday attacked ruling party supporters and minority Hindus in parts of Bangladesh, torching their homes and shops. At least five people died in the violence, local TV stations reported. Hindus are believed to be supporters of Hasina.

In Dhaka, Jamaat-e-Islami activists torched at least four cars and a motorcycle near the country's main railway station, said Shahzadi Sultana, a fire official. Several homemade bombs were detonated during the attack, Somoy TV reported.

Bangladesh says Pakistani soldiers, aided by local collaborators including Mollah, killed at least 3 million people and raped 200,000 women during the nine-month war against Pakistan.

The case remains politically volatile because most of those being tried are connected to the country's opposition. Mollah was a key member of Jamaat-e-Islami, which is barred from taking part in next month's national elections. But the group is closely tied to the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

The special tribunal convicted Mollah of killing a student and a family of 11, and of aiding Pakistani troops in killing 369 other people during the war. The court had stopped his execution at the last minute Tuesday night — just hours before he was due to be hanged — before rejecting his final appeal....

A Bible translator in war-ravaged Central African Republic (CAR) was shot and killed this week as he attempted to escape mounting violence in Bangui, according to Wycliffe Bible Translators.

Elisée Zama, who served as a translator with ACATBA, Wycliffe’s partner organization in CAR, was shot as he was transporting family members to the relative safety of a hospital compound.

 

Violence began intensifying in CAR following a coup in March 2013. Many humanitarian organizations have withdrawn from the country or cut back services and government health clinics have largely been abandoned.

“Reprisals against Christians in particular in Bangui are of great concern,” said Larry Robbins with SIL, a Wycliffe partner in CAR.

“There have been . . . reprisals in certain neighborhoods of Bangui, resulting in thousands seeking refuge on the airstrip of the international airport,” he said.

“Our SIL colleagues report a quieter night. They remain within the security of the School of Theology compound until further notice. There are French patrols now in evidence. We are grateful for the unanimous passing of a UN resolution which gives the French troops a mandate to take appropriate force to protect the civilian population and it appears that this has had an immediate effect.”

Robbins requests prayers for Zama’s widow and three young children, and for ACATBA leaders as they prepare for his burial under very difficult circumstances.

“Please continue to pray for safety,” added Robbins, “and an end to the violence which has shaken so many communities over the last days.”

Last month, the UN warned the CAR was at risk of descending into genocide and France described the country as “on the verge of genocide.” Christians make up 50 percent of the population and Muslims 15 percent, according to the World Factbook.

ACATBA (Association Centrafricaine pour la Traduction de la Bible et l’Alphabétisation) was created in 1993, upon the agreement of 14 evangelical denominations in the CAR. Prior to that time, ACATBA was a National Bible Translation Organization (NBTO).

"School Principal Attacked as New Education Policy Takes Effect in Osun, Nigeria,"  By Our Nigeria Correspondent
JOS, Nigeria, December 13, 2013 (Morning Star News) – Educational reforms in Nigeria’s Osun state have created religious tensions in schools, resulting in Islamist youths beating a Christian principal unconscious last month, Christian leaders said.
 
The state in southwestern Nigeria reclassified schools in September, thus merging those originally founded by Christian missionaries with other schools. The mergers, including the blending of single-sex schools with co-ed schools, require Muslims to attend the institutions of Christian heritage, the Christian leaders said. The Christian “missionary” schools, taken over by the state in 1975, have been considered public schools since then.
 
Among tensions created under the September changes, Islamist youths armed with axes and cutlasses on Nov. 25 attacked staff members and students at the Baptist High School-Ejigbo after administrators enforced a ban on the hijab, a covering for head or body used by Muslim women. Injured teachers and students received treatment at Baptist Medical Centre in Ejigbo, and principal Layi Oguntola regained consciousness only after hospitalization, the Christian leaders said.
 
The attackers, who also tried to burn down a Baptist church on Nov. 25, said they were upset that school officials had stopped Muslim students from wearing the covering, church leaders said. After school authorities on Nov. 22 sent a Muslim female student home for violating the school ban on the covering, the Islamists on Nov. 25 stormed the premises at about 8 a.m., heading first for the office of the principal.
 
The high school in Osun, a state usually free of religious tensions, was established by the Nigerian Baptist Convention. The Rev. Bayo Ademuyiwa, conference president of the 35 Baptist congregations in the area, said the church had no objection to the government’s attempt to equip schools, but that it would not allow attempts to erase its identity and heritage through policies aimed at enthroning Islam.
 
“Our forefathers and missionaries sacrificed their lives, resources and everything to establish schools, reputable schools with morals and values, and that is why the Baptists in Iwo land are here to protect our schools,” Ademuyiwa said. “Baptists in Iwo land say no to merger of schools, and Baptists in Iwo land say no to the use of the hijab in Baptists’ schools.”
 
Sunday Akere, Osun state commissioner for information, confirmed the attack on the Christian high school.
 
“It is unfortunate that this happened at a time when we are already achieving peace in the area of schools’ reclassification,” Akere told Morning Star News.
 
Folasade Odoro, Osun State Police spokesman, also confirmed the attack.
 
“We received a report on the attack, and we have brought the situation under control,” Odoro said.
 
The Nigerian Baptist Convention had rejected the Osun government decision to send Muslim students to schools of Christian heritage, saying they would not allow hijab-wearing students to attend. Convention leaders said the new education policy of state Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, a Muslim, was an attempt to Islamize schools and force Islam on Christians.
 
In a peaceful protest on Oct. 2, the Baptist leaders held a worship service in the chapel of the high school and called on the government to rescind the policy, which they called an effort to erode the gains of Christianity by forcefully taking over Christian schools.
 
The Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, chairman of the Osun state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, said the church would not compromise.
 
“We observe that the foundation of Christian faith is being threatened by some of the state government policies, especially in the education sector, which the church is strongly averse to and is not ready to compromise,” Ogundiya told Morning Star News. “The Christian Association of Nigeria, on behalf of the entire Christians in the state, unanimously resolved that the state government should stop the merger of schools forthwith; reverse the changing of single-sex schools to co-educational schools in order to preserve the religious character of each school; and return all mission schools back to their original founders.”
 
The state governor, however, said in a statement shortly after the protest that the Christian leaders’ request for the policy to be rescinded would not be granted.
 
“No single group, organization, individual, religious or social body’s interest would suffer as a result of the ongoing re-classification and reform,” Aregbesola said in a statement through his media aide, Semiu Okanlawon.
 
In an interview with the Nigerian newspaper Leadership, Aregbesola said Osun’s Yoruba people – Christians, Muslims and adherents of traditional religion – have long lived peacefully among each other.
 
“If Yorubas have been living together like this, where then is the basis for this allegation that we mixed Christians with Muslims?” he said in the interview.
 
Christian leaders told Morning Star News that the Nov. 25 attack was a clear indication of a hidden agenda by the Muslim-controlled government and Muslims in the state to Islamize Christians.
 
As a result of the attack, the Baptist High School and other Christian schools in the town were closed. Security agents and armed policemen were deployed to contain the spread of attacks on Christians as Islamists had tried to set fire to the United Baptist Church.
 
While most Muslims in Nigeria live in the northern states, Osun has a large population of Muslims, Christians and adherents of indigenous beliefs. Christians make up 51.3 percent of Nigeria’s population of 158.2 million and live mainly in the south, while Muslims account for 45 percent and reside primarily in the north, according to Operation World.
