...I give to you and you give to me...

One of my least favorite parts of myself is that my tin ear is so completely...er...tin. I am surprised that earrings don’t adhere to my skin with rust when I wear them. Although I like music and the emotion I get from it, I don’t actually hear the notes or feelthe emotion of the performer. My husband was changing strings on his Alvarez guitar a few weeks ago and was aghast at hearing a dead spot—there were two or three notes that weren’t there. I hope I was properly sympathetic, b...

Inspiration--Who Knew?

You know, it's funny how inspiration for a book happens. Sometimes, it's a long, long process of just thinking...a lot of thinking and trying on ideas and playing with story. I thought that was what happening with the newest Women of Willow Bay book--one that might be a novella, but will probably become a full novel because...well, frankly because I'm so dang wordy. I've been playing with this story idea for a few weeks--really since the writers' retreat at the state park inn, where my fellow...

Toil and tedium and maybe a little whine

Sunday afternoon.

Outside of the obvious—family, friends, good health, etc.—I love writing more than any other single thing in my life. If there was a fire or flood at my home and everyone was safe, I’m a little embarrassed to admit that the first thing I’d rescue would be my laptop. When I travel, it’s the last thing in the car before I leave and the first thing out when I arrive. In the same vein, what I’m writing is often the first thing I think of in the morning and the last thing every ni...

Robin Walthery Allen in The Poet's Corner

Thanks for having me on Word Wr...

Reading Rewards

The other day, a lady came through my checkout line with just a children's book. Considering I work in a Burlington Store, this was quite unusual. She said her son had agreed that they wouldn't buy a toy, but he got around it by "finding" a book.

I told her that when my daughters were younger and we still had a bookstore in Vancouver Mall, B.Dalton's had been their reward for behaving in all the other stores.

My kids figured out early on that while I didn't always have money to buy...

...we wish you all the best...

I received a rejection on a project the other day. I was disappointed. The letter was nice in a form letter kind of way, though it gave me nothing to work with. No criticism either constructive or otherwise. But it was, you know, okay. Except for one thing.               The letter was an email, of course, because that’s what we all use now, and that’s fine—I don’t think things stung any less when they were on pape...

Memories At Morning/Mourning??

This morning I woke up thinking about my dad.

Maybe it's because on Memorial Day, we went to the graveyard and did the flower/flag thing.

I spent my early years in the Navy--moving every couple of years. I have glimpses of memories from those places. A stroller ride in Disneyland, crunchy snow from Waukegan, IL, fireflies and hot sand in Norfolk, VA, and picking huckleberries on a hillside in Keflavik, Iceland.

It was my life and I didn't know there was anything different about civili...<![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]>
