Six Sentence Sunday – 8/14

Thought I would share six sentences today from my award winning novel sci-fi/futuristic romance, Midnight's Ghost. It's one of those books that takes you on an absolute ride the whole book and it was just as much fun to write. And, you know, space opera isn't complete with a starship crash…

"Let's hope this tin can holds together to make it through the atmosphere," Wallace said quietly as he settled his chin on my shoulder to watch the planet draw closer. I did my best to keep my eyes off the numbers in the lower starboard corner of the screen. The same figures reporting our altitude in rapidly decreasing increments.

"This your way of sharing the glory, Wallace?" I asked in reference to his choosing to stay on the bridge with me.

"Hell yes. Can't let you have all the fun, can I?"

For those new to this, the rules are simple:

1) pick a project – a current Work in Progress, contracted work or even something readers can buy if you're published

2) pick six sentences

3) post 'em on Sunday

Plenty of prizes to give away and lots of fantastic excerpts to read! I've got an Amazon gift card up for grabs and I'll be giving away winner's choice of my backlist, the winners of which will be drawn from the comments left of any of my posts through out today. Plus, there maybe more surprises in store.

Here's the first excerpt I've put up for today, an adult one, so you've been warned! ;)

Six Sentence Sunday – 8/7

I thought I'd give one of my backlist books some love today. Meet Ana and Stark from Flash of Dark.

Stark's slow movements were a direct conflict with the sweaty mass of bodies thrashing around us to the beat of the blaring techno music. His hands gripped my hips, moving them in time to his so that we moved as one and I noted that for as little as he was moving, there was nothing gentle about it.

His mouth fit over the flesh at my clavicle and I could feel his warm breath against my skin as he spoke. "I find I prefer this much more than spastically jumping around so much it's nearly teeth jarring. Besides," he said against my ear, drawing his mouth to the pulse point just under my earlobe, while his hands slid around to my lower back to rest lightly against the curve of my ass. "Should we choose to sweat from that much effort, I'd prefer you underneath me."

For those new to this, the rules are simple:

1) pick a project – a current Work in Progress, contracted work or even something readers can buy if you're published

2) pick six sentences

3) post 'em on Sunday

First Line = First Impression?

I'll admit it. I'm a sucker for first lines. To me, as a reader, it doesn't matter if you have ten 5-star ratings at Amazon, killer reviews and readers handselling your book left and right. You have to snag me in that first sentence or I'll put the book back on the shelf (yes, I love eBooks, but nothing can compare to standing in a brick and mortar store surrounded by books–that is something an eBook will never, ever replicate). The same goes when I write. I want to snag the reader in on the first sentence.

So I thought just how much I like to employ the same technique in some of my books. So, check out some first lines from current books and even a few Works in Progress. :D

Current Books:

Flash of Dark: My head snapped to the side, vision blurring as my eyes watered from the shock.

Midnight's Ghost: Whoever said karma was a bitch wasn't kidding.

Blood Fever: He pleaded for his life.

Midnight's Shadow: If Wallace didn't kill us, I'd kill him myself.

Forged in Fire:  Two gallons.

Ragged Edge:  Dalton was damaged goods.

Impulse Control:  Today was the cherry on top of a shitty week sundae.

WiPs:

3rd Star Runner book To Be Titled: "Fuck it all to fucking fuckery."

Contemporary Erotic Romance To Be Titled: "Is she insane?"

So, what about you? How do you like your first lines? Do you think they leave a lasting impression on you as a reader? If you're a writer, what does the first line of a book mean to you? Oh, and I like first chapters too. But that's for another day.

NEWS: Slow Break (Sypricon Masters #4)

Fantastic news! Decadent Publishing has acquired another science fiction erotica short for my Sypricon Masters series. This one is titled SLOW BREAK. Once again, something different from me as this will be the first GLBT story (m/m) for the series! As always, remember all the shorts can be read independently with the only connection being the club. Aside from one or two minor characters, the couple is always different.

More details on SLOW BREAK when I have them, but in the meantime, here's the unofficial blurb:

Jack Cotton thought he'd made the right choice to walk away from Tawse, the only BDSM club on Sypricon. But a life-altering tragedy has shown him the error of his ways. Now, he's ready to make amends and is more than prepared to kneel before the Dom he left so abruptly.

Denton is bound by the rules of Tawse, and he knows Jack's membership has been terminated. But Jack's return is all too personal and his actions can't simply be ignored. Forced to make a choice, Denton does the only thing his instincts as a Dom tell him. After all, some men, like rules, are meant to be broken.

Six Sentence Sunday – 7/31

Wow. Where did July go? This month brought two releases for me (unusual) so I thought I'd share six sentences from one of those. Enjoy six sentences from the newly released Ragged Edge–they're short, but talk about a revelation…

Dalton's words finally sank in and suddenly, the offhand comment coupled with what she'd seen in the garage made sense. The control Dalton had exerted over Cade, the temperament between the two men and their fiery relationship snapped into focus with startling clarity. There was more here than she'd first thought that night at the shop.

They just weren't involved. They were seriously hung up on one another.

And in complete denial about it.

1) pick a project – a current Work in Progress, contracted work or even something readers can buy if you're published

2) pick six sentences

3) post 'em on Sunday

Advice about 'Never'

I blogged over at Liquid Silver Books about why I need to remove the word never from my vocabulary. There's even picture evidence of why. ;)
