MOCOS’ NEW FILMING VENUE

SETSUKO Tsuchiya and I recently auditioned for a new film, MOCOS (pronounced “locos”) a horror film by Elias Perez’ 2-Liters Shady Films. I was pleased to be selected for the role of Dr. Gregory Grant, MD, a public health specialist, and Setsuko for the role of Ms. Akari Koko-Grant, wife of Dr. Grant and reporter for the Pacific World News.

What initially caught my interest was that this would be an experimental “distance” filming project, whereby each actor/actress would DIY film the required scenes themselves “on location.” First, I’ve watched the film industry struggle with COVID-19 (and assumedly future pandemics) without an alternative way of filming that would honor the need for the 6 to 12 foot distancing requirement, mask wearing, daily temperature and COVID testing, and the risk of having to prematurely end filming due to a case, or worse, spreading the disease further. Currently, there were no “alternative” filming venues, at least until Elias Perez’ unique approach. No film I know of has had an uber-director. And the challenge of acting, lighting, sound, filming all-in-one “on location” throughout the world totally caught my eye and mind. Add someday interactive holographic filming and this effort is touching my vision of the future of movies as laid out in my award-winning, Amazon genre bestselling novel, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor (my thriller pen name) — https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693859.

Having just finished filming an initial 4 scenes, Setsuko and I are excited about how the film will eventually come together. For a “behind-the-scenes” look at this new way of filming and a peek at our current roles, check out https://janik.yolasite.com/actor.php (MOCOS). Keep coming back to see how this as well as other movies were in, like THE MALTESE COLLECTION, THE PERFECT ILLUSION and FINDING KATE continue to develop. I post film news and new photo/video montages regularly.

Here’s an imaginative teaser photo of Dr. Grant and reporter wife Ma. Akari Koko-Grant, discussing and reporting MOCOS as an imaginary HOPE ship brings in anticipated medical resources. Though not necessarily a part of the movie, it illustrates the power of “distance” filming, in this case using home “green screen” technology to augment scenes. GO, WENT AND GONE – ALMOST

It’s Vaudeville I’m talking about. How about you? Vaudeville was where tomorrow’s stars teethed. Wikipedia says it’s “a mixture of specialty acts such as burlesque comedy and song and dance” to which I’ll add, mostly on a live stage. What better way to hone one’s skills than playing every different weekend at a different town. A hard life no doubt, but one that I’ve always wanted to experience. Nowadays, it is no film rather than the live stage, and storytelling with “special effects” rather than comedy, song and dance. Which brings me to what I REALLY want to post about: Setsuko Tsuchiya and I have just begun working on our dance number for the K. Simmons Production of A. G. Hayes’ FINDING KATE (Savant 2016) — https://www.amazon.com/dp/0997247215. All seven books in the Koski & Falk Secret Agent series are available in toto in one ebook entitled THE COMPLETE KOSKI & FALK (Savant 2020) — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086Z87Z9K or in two 600-page printed books (Vol 1 — https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693832 and Vol 2 — https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693840).

As all good dancers know, dance is the frosting on the cake of good music, so we’ve been working to locate the perfect tune to which to dance. And, Voila! After days of research, we came up with a totally unique, 100+ year old public domain piece that just fits. But even better news our dear friend, musician Leon Siu, after hearing it, agreed to re-record it with the help of his friend and studio manager, Pierre, with his musician-partner Malia registering it as our own music. Excited! I’ve never in my life have I owned a piece of music, and this one is extraordinary, promising to be our signature music and dance! While the three complete everything, we’re practicing away — see http://janik.yolasite.com/findingkate... for behind-the-scenes information and photo/video vignettes in preparation for FINDING KATE. Sorry, no music. We want the music to be a surprise when the movie is released and viewed by the public.

However, we invite you to enjoy an audio-video sampler of our performance and competition work at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ync4v.... We first appeared on film as background dancers in FANTASY ISLAND 1998 – Episode 4 – “Dying to Dance” – (39.00 through 42.00 minute mark). Recently, I choreographed and danced a short sequence with actress Jerri Lynn Endo (“Ginny”) in the made-for-television movie STATIC (1.27 through 1.41). And, now we’re ready for our big film debut in FINDING KATE!

IT’S JUST ANOTHER DAY…

IT’S hard to comment about about something that appears like “ghost” marketing (marketing an “unavailable” product), though this new approach to seems to be popping up more and more these days. You know the basic story: A product or service fails “due to COVID,” and whether the failing is real or not, public response results in a rush of demand, creating a sales boom, often with the product being offered at higher price. Clever, if, in fact, it’s all true. But whether true or just another of the myriad conspiracy theories, I’m disappointed to see any such seemingly “get rich quick” marketing strategies appear, and appear they are, in what now appear to be increasing numbers. I call individuals with “get rich quick” schemes, “Fast Eddies,” in my latest book, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor —

https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693859

where, in fact, NewAmerica is actually governed by “Fast Eddies,” and the results are not dissimilar to today: Misrepresentation. Divisive extremism. Instant fortunes without longterm commitment or responsibility. Wars and constant rumors of wars. It’s hard to call it science fiction or fantasy when it’s already begun happening, so I’ve taken to calling this new book genre “science futuring.” So what would a world based on what’s happening today at THE EDGE OF MADNESS be like, you ask? Grab a copy of my Amazon genre bestseller and see for yourself.

“SAY … WHAT … ? Author Raymond Gaynor, in this sequel to his novel TOTAL MELTDOWN, manages a successful tear in the time-space continuum that provides his readers with an insightful glimpse of society’s future. It’s not always a pleasant picture. In fact, it’s sometimes bordering on the truly shocking. That said … all of his prophetical premises seem to have logical underpinnings based upon historical facts, including what’s obviously at play within our own Twenty-First Century. It’s a fascinating read, experienced through the eyes of three protagonists from birth, through adolescence, and into maturity. Their journey is often difficult and often dangerous. Never, though, is it boring.” – William Maltese, co-author of the prequel, TOTAL MELTDOWN. If you don’t believe me, at least believe author William Maltese. I do.

THE EDGE OF MADNESS is available in printed, digital and audiobook format and has been purchased by K. Simmons Productions for manga, animation and cinematic treatment.

SPECTACLE AND VIOLENCE

BLOODSPORT is the term for events of spectacle involving violence to the point of bloodletting. While violence and bloodletting are probably as old as humanity, they are said to have became a spectacle with the ancient pre-Roman Etruscans in or around 600 BCE — https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/s... and http://thespectaclesofapuleius.weebly... — and later the Greek Olympics begun in 770 BCE — https://olympics.com/ioc/faq/history-.... In fact, the ancients Etruscans were know to both the later Romans, and the ancient Greeks as Tyrrhenians, scenes from Etruscan tombs sometime portraying gladiatorial-style funeral “games” on behalf of the privileged dead. Bloodsport was said to become a professional sport with the establishment of the Greek Olympics, popularized further and with significantly more brutality by the ancient Romans.

Bloodsport is said to have become most diverse and reached its highest level of popularity with ancient Rome, where the “games” were often purely staged spectacles whereby viewers, “like the gods,” participated in the decision as to whether individual participants, human and animal, survived or died. Pankration, bullfighting, boxing, wrestling, fencing, weaponed combat and today, stealth murder or assassination, typically in portrayed in films, are all modern forms of bloodsport. Bloodsport, typically accompanied by visible and auditory expressions of the victim’s horror and pain, are held by some to be re-enactments of human mortality and morbidity, supposedly “celebrating” life.

Some would consider the “documentation” or news on television of the war for the Ukraine as a contemporary expression of bloodsport, playing directly to spectacle and violence. Others might remark that the contribution to bloodsport of modern civilization is a portrayed total lack of empathy for the pain and suffering of the victims by perpetrators referred to as sociopaths. Yet others would say the scale and suddenness of mass deaths and destruction since the beginning of the “nuclear” age has elevated bloodsport to a new level deserving of a new name.

For me, the bottomline isn’t the weapons, sociopathology or scale of the violence, but simply its perpetration and its surprising acceptance and willful perpetration by humans that underlies bloodsport. I’ve heard it said that of the two — experiencing bloodsport directly as a victim, or indirectly being experienced by another without taking moral action — the latter may actually be the most damaging. Either way, violence is quite easily done, but recovery difficult, expensive, time-consuming, and possibly impossible to “erase.” More likely it represents a loss of innocence that can never be reclaimed, only at best reflected upon in the hope of imparting knowledge and wisdom, and hopefully breaking the cycle of violence that seems so firmly embedded in human society.

IN-SANE

NOW there’s an interesting, amazingly paradoxical word (I nearly wrote “world,” thank you, Dr. Freud for that Freudian slip). To say someone is “in-sane” would logically be the opposite of saying he or she is “insane.” But what is sanity, and who’s to say what it actually means. The online Oxford Languages dictionary defines sanity as “the ability to think and behave in a normal and rational manner,” the key words being “normal” and “rational.” Think for a moment about our “normal,” contemporary world of movies, historical novels, advertisements, bias, spinning, Santa Claus and “fake” news. And, if sanity means “rational,” then, in my humble opinion, it’s little more than a crap shoot these days.

The ancient Greeks, whose “philosophy” (literally, “love of wisdom”) has proven to be the foundation of “Western” thought, held that humans were susceptible to believing any of the appeals: logos, pathos and ethos — to which I would add keiros and numos — respectively logic and reasoning; passion; morality; popularity and legality. While all are said to appeal to humans seeking wisdom, only the first, logos (logic and reasoning) is said to have “truth value,” if one knows how to make a truth value determination. In short, and in newspeak, an idea must be free of logical fallacies and, at the same time, true in terms of factual arguments. Still feeling quite sane?

That being said, it is equally important to distinguish whether something “true” is such at the level of data, information, knowledge and/or wisdom. Data are qualitative or quantitative attributes. Information is data that has meaning (e.g. the datum “100” has little meaning until it becomes “100 degrees Centigrade”). Knowledge is present when one can take something true in one area and apply it elsewhere (e.g. the ability to apply “how to converse in one’s own language” to other languages or perhaps to debating a United Nation’s proposal). Wisdom, on the other hand, is all about knowing when and how to present a new idea without hurting others. Got it? Now you can say with authority that you’re firmly in-sane. At least, that’s my opinion.

If you enjoyed this romp into, through and beyond sanity, consider reading my latest book, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor. An Amazon genre bestseller, it’s available now in printed, digital and/or audiobook form. Try it. You might like it. And you might find that being in-sanity isn’t so bad after all…

TOMATOES, TOMAHTOES

WHAT’S the difference between Chow Mein and Chop Suey? Gotcha there, didn’t I? So, in my world:

According to TheSpruceEats, Chow Mein, (in Mandarin “ch’ao mien” which means “stir-fried noodles”) is the more authentic of the two, having originated in Northern China. If it doesn’t contain something stir-fried along with boiled noodles, it’s not Chow Mein — https://www.thespruceeats.com/chop-su.... “Chow mein is an established recipe where noodles are first boiled and then added at the end to a stir-fry of vegetables and [thin soy] sauce, keeping the noodles somewhat soft.”

According to the same source, Chop Suey “was invented in America by Chinese Americans. A story that has stood the test of time is that this dish was created by a legendary Chinese chef at a California mining camp. On a day he was short on ingredients and staff, he threw together a dish for his customers using whatever he had in the kitchen. He named it ‘tsa sui’ in Mandarin, which means ‘miscellaneous broken pieces.’ The name became Americanized to ‘chop suey’. There is no existence of a dish called ‘tsa sui’ in China.” Whatever ingredients are on hand are chopped up and stir-fried with a thicker sauce. There don’t have to be noodles in Chop Suey; instead, the stir-fried mixture is typically served over rice.

Nonetheless the two typically present and taste quite differently. As with so many things in life, the devil is in the detail. The same can be said about acting and living one’s life in the present. At their best, both seem “authentic;” however, they present and are experienced quite differently irrespective of the amount of work. And then there’s actors like me who have lived a succession of act-ivities, aware that they are often acting a lot in the process of living life. Having been a physician, educator, NASA researcher, Naval Commander, author and environmentalist/naturalist, I find myself drawing constantly from these various professions in my acting. As a doctor I was constantly delivering “bedside manner.” As an educator, I was acting in front of an audience every day. As a NASA researcher, I frequently imagined myself on the starship/shuttle Enterprise. As a Naval Commander, I was a “leader of men.” As an author, I took on the roles of countless characters in order to make my books read more realistically. As an environmentalist and naturalist, I was forever being challenged to be at my most human. “The world is a stage” the Great Bard once shared, and we are forever creating our own movies, calling them memories.

Still the difference between acting and simply living couldn’t be more. One of the challenges of being an actor is to keep being aware of the difference, so that one doesn’t morph into the other. Tomatoes, Tomahtoes. Chow Mein, Chop Suey. Go figure, then mark your calendars for November/December 2022 when the six weekly episodes of the K. Simmons Production of FINDING KATE are scheduled to air. See you on the silverscreen! Follow me Behind-the-Scenes at https://janik.yolasite.com/actor.php.

ACTING AND DANCING

THIS has been a busy week for myself, actor Daniel S. Janik (aka author Raymond Gaynor) — https://janik.yolasite.com — and my partner, Setsuko Tsuchiya — https://setsukotsuchiya.com. First, we were pleased to each receive Supporting Actor parts in the upcoming, six-episode, made for TV, K. Simmons Production of FINDING KATE — https://ksmediagroupinc.com/finding-kate. I will be playing myself in Episode One, acting in a scene from the filming of STATIC (2021) — https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15420946/. Setsuko will be playing a store clerk interacting with principal characters Koski and Falk in Episode Five.

We’re even more excited by the opportunity of appearing in Episode One doing an honor dance in the gala studio party scene. The dance will be choreographed by Hawaii’s own top DanceSport professional, Mr. Albert Franz. Music will be a rerecording of an old Hawaiian favorite by Hawaii’s Ambassadors of Aloha, Leon and Malia — http://www.leonandmalia.com/Leon_%26_.... Filming is projected for August 2022. SNIPETS AND SNAILS AND PUPPYDOG TALES

YES, that’s an intended paraphrase of the adage, “What are little boys made of? What are little boys made of? Snips, snails And puppy-dogs’ tails That’s what little boys are made of” In case you’re wondering, other stanzas concern girls, babies, young men, young women, sailors, soldiers, nurses, fathers, mothers, old men, old women, and all folks are made of [sic]. But, hey, while the world waxes non-binary, I still catch myself thinking in terms of male and female. Forgive me. It’s really the AI-in-my-brain/computer’s fault. It keeps trying to correct everything I say, including of course everything that can possibly be genderized.

Being “male” is a lot about snipets. Like being “female” it’s not a comprehensive one-time package. It’s about rolling through childhood, achieving sexual maturity, dancing the so-human dance of sexuality and parenthood, contributing to society, attaining one’s best self-actualization, passing on what one has learned while making way for the next generation. It’s the journey rather than the destination. It’s about being utterly human — kind, compassionate, helpful and cheerful — while letting oneself fully experience each step of life’s journey.

It’s about also about snails: Taking it slow, wet, slimy. Sharing power. Never giving up, but always willing to consider another path, not mattering whether it’s the longer or shorter trail. It’s about the unusual over the usual. It’s about the small things that in the end really matter.

And it’s about puppydog “tales.” While others fight the fight, attempting to accumulate money or power, attempting to somehow thwart, dismiss or even forget the very mortality that makes our lives so valuable, while others live in the past and future, it’s about living in the present, immersed in the many intertwining “tales” of humanity. In the very end, it’s not about truth, knowledge, understanding, consciousness or reality; it’s about having enjoyed the journey and every stop along the way, every adventure we write into our life story, and doing so to the fullest.

Surprisingly, to some, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor seems the antithesis. I would claim, however, that read with an open heart, the journey traveled by my three protagonists is, indeed, all about snipers, snails and puppydog tales alongside the “Sugar and spice, And everything nice” that little girls are made of. Then again, there’s — https://shinyhappypeebles.files.wordp...

FROM THE MOUTH OF AN ADDER

ACCORDING to Wikipedia, the common European adder or common viper, is a venomous snake that is extremely widespread and can be found throughout most of central and eastern Europe and as far as East Asia, so you can see that we’re not talking mathematics here. What we’re talking is talk. Conversation. Discussion. Dialog. Debate. In short, viperous praddle, intentionally so.

I’m not talking propaganda or prepared speeches, public or private. I’m talking more of intentional gossip that indirectly leads one or more parties to erroneous, hurtful assumptions that, when unconsciously or consciously acted upon, damages others. I’m also not talking anything like court affidavits — statements made under oath that reflect an opinion or declaration of a blind and balanced court of law. I’m talking everything in-between that is harmful.

But first, some definitions: Conversation or discussion is, in my opinion, an informal, polite, social exchange of ideas or information. Dialog is a more formal conversation or discussion in which the parties seek to resolve a conundrum while carefully respecting each’s right to converse without interruption (and I’m not talking about filibustering). Debate is a formal discussion on a particular topic, in which opposing arguments are put forward and one opinion “wins” over the others. Think “Highlander” and “there can be only one.” And irrespective of the above form, there has to be bias, spin, prejudice, partisanship, bigotry, intolerance or manipulation involved.

In my opin, this is probably the most dangerous form of talk possible, as it generally leads the participants to think they are discovering a truth, when, in fact, truth isn’t an issue. Instead it’s about subtly convincing the others that they have come to a conclusion that, in fact, they were carefully led to. The ancient Greeks mention that perception of truth was dependent on the appeal one uses. Logos (logic and reasoning), pathos (emotion), ethos (morality and religion) to which I would add keiros (popularity or public prestige) and numos (the law). Of these, only logos was recognized has having any absolute “truth value” and then only if the arguments and evidence presented was true. I can’t but wonder if in today’s world of “fake” news, we shouldn’t as a society return to logos. But that would require a major reset in our education, government, politics, business, “advertising and marketing,” as well as the way we regard, hopefully respect, each other.

In THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor — https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693859, the “edge” is largely about what we perceive to be true and how we act upon it. Taking up where the irreverent TOTAL MELTDOWN (Borgo/Wildside 2009) by Raymond Gaynor and William Maltese left off, NewAmerica, a shadow of its former United States of America, provides a challenging and dangerous future place for three young firebrands to live. Why not take a moment from contemporary life to converse with me at THE EDGE OF MADNESS.

HEY! WHO’S IN CHARGE HERE?

HAVING posted yesterday on the “solution” to a cupboard-“bare” market, in the process suggesting that the “market” and by extension, our economy (at least from a “market” perspective) is run by gamblers, I’ve come to wonder who’s in charge of it all: the economy, government, the world? Or is there no one at all sitting in the drivers seat?

I’ve always held that the key to anything human, is balance and qualified cooperation. The framers of our Constitution called it “balance of power.” But the idea applies, in my opinion, to money, another illusory “game” invented by humans. In that sense, the answer to whether anyone is in charge — in the driver’s seat so to speak — is that IF there is any ONE person, company, party or religion, there would be no “balance.” Likewise, in my opinion, in regard to Wall Street. It’s always in the balance of power or money democratic institutions thrive. However, there is a caveat (or weakness, if you’re not a proponent of capitalistic democracy) and that is the issue of “truth.”

Democratic organizations heavily depend on voters knowing and exercising their vote based on unbiased truth. At the least, transparency. No “hidden secrets.” Something that has proven exceptionally difficult to maintain in our contemporary world where money and power are typically used to seduce, thwart, spin or fake necessary information. Which leads me guess that if people these days were presented with “true” truth, balance and cooperation could be restored and democratic decisions would once again prove rather easy to make.

In my latest book, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor, and it’s ribald prequel, TOTAL MELTDOWN (Borgo/Wildside 2009) by Raymond Gaynor and William Maltese, the consequences of unbalance are examined and the consequences explored in depth. In PROPHECY, the third book in this series, currently in writing, I take these consequences a step further and describe a world where unbalance and attempts at resuming balance become elevated to world issues. As one reviewer said, THE EDGE OF MADNESS is “a successful tear in the time-space continuum that provides his readers with an insightful glimpse of society’s future. It’s not always a pleasant picture. In fact, it’s sometimes bordering on the truly shocking. That said…all of his prophetical premises seem to have logical underpinnings based upon historical facts, including what’s obviously at play within our own Twenty-First Century. It’s a fascinating read, experienced through the eyes of three protagonists from birth, through adolescence, and into maturity. Their journey is often difficult and often dangerous. Never, though, is it boring.” In PROPHECY the tear becomes a chasm, the result rippling through space and time.

“A never before imagined world, secretly emerging even as the book is being read.” And who’s in charge here? Well, YOU are, dear reader. YOU alone are! Ha, ha!
