ARE THERE REALLY DRAGONS, MOMMY?
I have to admit that people, especially children, have a fascination with dragons, be they more or less dinosaurian, bird-like or unicornian. I’ve always wondered from where this seemingly genetic-based “belief” in them comes. Until recently. For over 50 years now investigation has been ongoing into the nature of Quetzalcoatlus, a late Cretaceous winged behemoth with a likely 40-foot wingspan. With its wings “folded,” should humans have been present and not eaten trying to mount them, Quetzalcoatlus would be the perfect model of what many imagine when they hear or read the word “dragon” — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQtbW....
But wait! Quetzalcoatlus may not be be biggest, scariest dragon to have existed. Reports from a 2012 dig in Argentina have come to reveal a new competitor for the epitaph, “dragon:” The Dragon of Death, Thanatosdrakon amaru — https://www.bbc.com/news/science-envi... that closely fits what most conjure up when they think “dragon.”
Forget “past lives.” We’re talking “eon-memory” here. But while these creatures fitting our “eon-memories” certainly do exist, is eon-memory real? Is it even plausible? I would have to say, at this time, “No.” There is no scientific evidence or explanation. Yet. So, is it even possible? Now that’s a question beyond our fascination with dragons, up there, in my book, with plant-memories. Do plants have memories. While they don’t have a concentrated “brain” as we do, and their “nervous system” isn’t anything like ours, on a much larger time frame, they do seem to be able to ambulate, react to noxious stimuli, and remember, for example, a damaging insect species. Making me wonder what they, and other animals, “think” of humans. Not much positive, I suspect.

RE-COVER-Y
SOME say that revenge is sweet, but I fear that whether sweet or not, it simply continues the cycle of violence into which today’s world seems trapped. It takes faith, trust, empathy, courage and strength to not respond to violence with violence. And re-cover-y, an odd word suggesting that the ultimate goal of recovery is to re-cover an act of violence. Sweep it under the rug, so to speak. But it’s not like that at all.
If every perpetrator of violence had to pay for the victim’s recovery, there would be no more. No one could afford it. It’s in the abandonment of the victim that war becomes an inhuman business with excellent return on investment. Interesting to note that after the past two world wars, avery attempt to extort from the “aggressor” the cost of recovery failed, ultimately contributing once again to the circle of violence. It’s only when the cost is presented “up front” that any financial solution of violence actually works. Think of gun violence. Or “business violence,” often hidden under the rubric “competition.”
Interestingly, re-cover-y takes what was broken during violation: faith, trust, empathy, courage and strength. It is the process of recovery itself that allows one to re-cover an act of violation/violence and minimize it’s terrible “side-effects,” namely self-blame, generalized hatred, increased impulsiveness and resulting triggers. What’s a “trigger?” In my experience, it’s something that, often unrelated, was experienced the same time as the violation. For example, after being verbally castigated by man in a yellow tie, smoking a cigarette, on a rainy day, a yellow tie, the smell of cigarette smoke or a dreary day could cause feelings during the incident to resurface, typically called “panic attacks.”
Dealing with trauma, whether verbal or physical, requires the help of friends, colleagues and professionals who are “consistently” supportive rather than abusive. One moment of abuse can take years to re-cover. And don’t forget that violation/violence doesn’t have to be direct. It can be equally damaging when indirect, like, for example watching abuse happen but not taking action to stop it. Think witnessing a gun-murder on television. Or simply having physical traits similar to the abuser.
My experience is that, even with the best of resources, time and support, the memory of the trauma is never erased. It’s only re-covered sufficiently to allow one to go on living one’s life, hopefully to experience the ultimate revenge: living a good, fulfilling life in spite of the trauma.

REVENGE
“AN eye for an eye; a tooth for a tooth.” How many eyes and teeth does it take to satisfy one hurt person’s desire for revenge? The answer: an infinite number, as one revenge begats another. Add hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, even millions of personal revenge desires and what do you have? Today’s world, a stage upon which literally untold numbers of revenge desires being acted out, in the process, creating new ones. The problem, of course, is how to stop it.
“Turning the other cheek” works sometimes, if the person seeking revenge has any semblance of empathy left, which if left would strongly counteract the actual acting out of revenge. In my experience, it doesn’t work at all when there’s no empathy left in the victim, creating instead an ever-increasing host of sociopaths. Not a situation, often providing, in a victimizer’s mind a sort of “permission to victimize.” Not invoking violence against violence seems a complete non-sequitur, especially in a victimizer’s mind bent on revenger.
“Unrestricted Forgiveness,” like “turning the other cheek” works sometimes, but can also fuel victimizers, elevating abuse, assault and/or battery to crimes against humanity, generalized genocide and/or an invitation to continue or expand victimization. Another seeming non-sequitur, especially in a victimizer’s mind bent on revenge.
“Taking legal action” works sometimes, but at best, tests the meaning of justice, where, in fact, the injustice itself is rarely if ever regained. Especially in regard to innocence. In my experience, revenge under the law, while at least socially acceptable, like war, can never completely repay the injustice.
So what is the “answer?” In my experience, the victim first needs to be willing to “see” the violation in its entirety, physically, emotionally, spiritually. Second, the victim needs to be willing to emotionally re-experience the violation in order to identify and break the innumerable “triggers” created by the violation that foment revenge. Third, victims need to forgive themselves for “allowing” the violation to have taken place, whether having been the victim or having watched the violence happen and not having done enough to stop it. Fourth, one must be willing to let go of the violator (a kind of anti-Stockholm Syndrome act). Fifth, and most importantly, the victim needs to be willing to live healthy, happily and well (the best sort of revenge). All this has to happen while removing oneself from the situation(s) and violator(s) that brought violator and victim into proximity, and eventually take action to prevent further such situations, specifically and in general. No more “walking on eggshells” or “worrying when it will happen again.”
Lame? Well, I have to admit that it’s certainly not hot, angry revenge. And it can, in some instances, take years, even decades or a lifetime, and it typically requires a lot of help from decent people. Trust, like innocence, once broken, is difficult and sometimes simply impossible to regain. But in my experience it does work. And it breaks the cascade of violence that revenge simply perpetrates. Try it, world. You might like it and what results.

THE META MIGHTA…
META, a reincarnation of Facebook (?), is gaining quite a bit of attention in the news these days, given that I, for one, have little idea of what it’s supposed to be. This despite engineering the first apparent META-VR sexual assault — https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-6.... Not something I personally would be proud of. In fact, it doesn’t make me all that interested in that particular META (multiverse?). There’s far too much assault and battery in the “real” world.
But the idea of entering, doing something positive, and exiting META or something like it is not entirely foreign to me. WINSOME, LOSESOME
EVER wonder what it would be like to always win? It might take a while, but my personal take is that it would quickly become “boring.” It’s always fun to win, but it’s in the losing that one learns and grows. Still, it IS fun to win, especially once in a while.

Not that I’m a Thor-like guy, though I’ve experienced life as a physician, actor, author, artist, dancer, educator, naturalist, in the process sowing some of my wild oats — https://janik.yolasite.com. Folk lore says that, ruled by Jupiter, Thursdays are days of vast expansion. It’s a day, I sense, when those with talent experience life without limitations. It’s my favorite day for both authoring and acting, and right now, finishing penning PROPHECY, my sequel to THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor — https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693859. What started as a relatively straightforward sequel, “tying up the untied,” has expanded into a new philosophy, spanning multiple worlds as two vastly different women compete for the love and affections of one gifted man, not unlike Thor, a “freak” in some unusual ways with a unique power of his own. Yes, I do write from a mental outline, but more importantly, I learned from a friend and colleague of mine, author A. G. Hayes, to listen closely to my characters as they develop and follow their lead. Especially on Thor’s day.

WHAT’S A MINUTE, ANYWAY?
IF you said or thought 60 seconds, you’re right. As least according to the ancient Babylonians who used a sexagesimal (counting in 60s) system for mathematics and astronomy derived from the even more ancient Sumerians who were using it as early as 3500 BC (https://www.theguardian.com/notesandq...).
But, of course, that’s only when measuring time on Earth at an average distance of 94 million miles from the greatest time distorter in our nearby space neighborhood, roughly 1,000 light years away from the nearest black hole, and 27,000 light years away from our galaxy’s central black hole. The “problem” with measuring time on Earth is that our planet exists in a space-time “well” that is always in flux, making time at any point, run a bit shorter or longer.
Even more interesting, however, is what happens to time (the fourth dimension and to our best knowledge the only linear dimension that irreversibly “flows”) as one approaches a black hole. Or, more correctly the “event horizon” surrounding a black hole, a theoretical boundary surrounding a black hole beyond which, due to increasing mass, density and gravity, no light or other radiation can escape – think a transparent “ball” surrounding a midnight black center point.
As one’s spaceship “falls in slower and slower as it asymptotically approaches the event horizon (due to time dilation), [it] appears fainter and fainter over time (as the number of photons per “amount-of-dilated-time” progressively decreases), and eventually gets “frozen” infinitesimally close to, but still outside, the event horizon” (https://www.forbes.com/sites/startswi...). “At the event horizon, the escape velocity is equal to the speed of light.
