UNITY WITH DIVERSITY

“THESE are the times that try men’s souls” – Thomas Paine. Divisiveness seems everywhere, encroaching everything everywhere, and with it a kind of intolerance and negativism. It’s always been easier to berate, criticize and destroy than to support, solve. create and build, or at least so it seems to me. Little is accomplished by divisiveness and its ultimate expression in destruction and death individually, through mass shootings or nationalistic war. On the other hand, discrimination is an often necessary part of learning (called from antiquity by Aristotle, “classification”), and isn’t necessarily negatively divisive or involve intolerance, beratement or destruction. These happens when barriers of morality are transgressed. In fact, one can be discriminatory and not at all divisive. Discrimination can point out where efforts are needed to better humanity.

In my opinion, the key to all this is balance, the Golden Rule and unity, sometimes called compromise. The goal is to bring people together in action and deed, without doing harm, not an easy goal, for sure, but a mainstay of democracy. At least, so I believe. It is when things get out-of-balance, are done with disregard to others or for the purpose of anarchy. Within that mixture is war, a game of money and power, made by humans against humanity. If there were ever an outstanding “crime against humanity,” it would, in my opinion, be war. Making money or consolidating power at the expense of humans, animals, plants and the planet is perhaps one of the most egregious of sins and could easily be the tenth level of Dante’s hell.

The point I’m trying to make — one explored in my recent award-winning book, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2021) by Raymond Gaynor — https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693859 — an Amazon audiobook genre bestseller, is grounded in the the ideal of unity with diversity. Unity is necessary to move idea through action into reality. Diversity is necessary as a hedge against bad judgement or ill-fate, highlighting that humans seem to learn more from mistakes than victories. May I commend to you THE EDGE OF MADNESS. It’s really not that bad a place to be.

WINNOWING (THE MOVIE) AND AN INTERVIEW WITH WILLIAM MALTESE

SEVERAL months ago, consummate author and screenwriter William Maltese offered author/actor Daniel S. Janik and author/actress Setsuko Tsuchiya a written-exclusively-for-them screenplay about auditioning for the “Big One.” To quote the Bard, “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely Players…” What could be more central to contemporary life than the constant auditioning/interviewing/screening to which we are endlessly subject? WINNOWING — https://janik.yolasite.com/winnowing.php — is now a movie in the late stage of development (pre-production) in which the lead characters, Setsuko and I, read excerpts from seven of Mr. Maltese’s great books before two strict but supportive casting directors, again played by Setsuko and me.

Several days ago, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing William regarding the production of WINNOWING and have posted the interview on my WINNOWING webpage cited above. Some “extra” topics included mention of William Maltese’s personal favorite books; his first screenplay, THE MOONSTONE MURDERS; actors Chan and Kun; and a duck named Mr. Maltese. I invite you to join us in a short, entertaining and informative interview, as WINNOWING moves from blocking to shotlisting, in anticipation of production and the start of filming here in fabulous Hawaiiwood.

I am currently seeking an experienced Oahu-based crew, my first priority being a cinematographer who is familiar with a Leica D-Lux 6 camera or has his/her own 4K camera with 50mm 1.2 lens, for an anticipated five days of filming. AND a publicist/distributor. Are you one? I’d love to meet. In the meantime, check my WINNOWING website regularly for behind-the-scenes photo/video vignettes, interviews like the one with William Maltese and other informative, revealing details.

AND BACK TO “WHAT I DO DESERVE"

AS an actor, one thing I especially look forward to are speaking roles in movies and television. Deserve? Well, if the number of auditions one does counts, then perhaps I do deserve a speaking role like I have in WINNOWING — https://janik.yolasite.com/winnowing.php, a movie written for myself and my partner, Setsuko Tsuchiya, by my author, screenwriter, actor, model, celebrity William Maltese. Already in pre-production, blocking having been completed last week and currently in shot listing, WINNOWING is about an actor and actress auditioning for the “Big One.” You can follow its progress at the above link. Check in regularly to see teasers, trailers, behind-the-scenes vignettes, interviews (including the latest with screenwriter William Maltese) and more.

Okay. Honestly, no one really “deserves” an acting role, whether it be lead, supporting or background. Roles are typically hard earned, the auditioning process being two-fold: First, it gives the producer a glimpse at the appropriateness and versatility of an actor to play a specific role in a production. Second, it serves as the second most important means of growing as an actor/actress, the first being actually playing the role in a production. Luck? Yes, there’s often a bit of that, too, though sometimes timing can be almost as important as skill. Deserved? No. But auditioning, at least in my experience, is the best “training” whether one ends up receiving a part or not. At least that’s been so for me.

Instead of deserving, I like to think grateful. While it’s true that acting roles are an important key part of cinema and television, every quality production involves a team, sometimes hundreds of crew in addition to the usual producer, director, cameraperson, and sound person. What one doesn’t see on the silver screen or home television is the myriad of dedicated individuals that make pre-production, production and post-production work. Gratitude is my catchword, for everyone involved in every aspect of every film in which I’ve had the privilege and honor of acting. Deserved? Pooh! Grateful. Immensely. And especially so for WINNOWING.

WHAT DON’T I DESERVE?

COUNTERPOINT to yesterday’s post entitled, “How Much Do I Deserve,” I though today’s post should be on what we don’t deserve. What we don’t deserve is what much of today’s world is desperately trying to serve everyone: Pre-COVID crowds and World War III. It all gets down to those two great illusions for which everyone is supposed to be competing: money and power. With the general acceptance of this long established, constantly resurfacing axiom, comes the increasingly inhumanity that seems to be seizing the world in it’s steel, increasingly digital grip, and a seemingly universal move towards the inhumane. What don’t we as humans deserve? As if the above weren’t enough, there’s the litany of consequences that come with the worship of money and power. That includes death by inconsequence, raising the equally age-old question as to what any one person’s life is worth, especially if money and power are the currency of human life.

If I sound like I’m once again standing on my soapbox, expounding as if my life depended on it, well, you’ve got it right: I am standing up and expounding because I increasingly feel like my own life may indeed depend on it. I’m often asked, if life isn’t all about the pursuit of money and power, what is it all about? What’s left, as if in asking “what’s left?” I’m already implying that everything else is at most second best. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my lifetime, it’s that it’s the journey, not just the result, during which one helps others’ journeys into humanism and on to naturalism that make life satisfying and worthwhile, a topic I explore deeply in THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor — https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693859.

Writing THE EDGE OF MADNESS was, in fact, my literary (as opposed to soapbox oratorical), that, as the sequel to TOTAL MELTDOWN (Borgo/Wildside 2009) by myself and William Maltese — https://www.amazon.com/dp/1434403556 — appeal to readers to think carefully about not just what we deserve, but what we definitely don’t deserve. On the other hand, if you just want a “hold onto your reading chair” thriller ride, consider QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) by myself and A. G. Hayes — https://www.amazon.com/dp/0996325530.

HOW MUCH DO I DESERVE?

THAT pivotal question comes in many forms throughout one’s life, like, “Why should I vote for so-and-so?” or “What starting pay do you want?” or “Should I join the military?” or “Is this a good person to date?” or “Isn’t it okay to simply pay myself more?” or “Should I accept the bribe?” It all gets down to how much one believes he or she deserves. Unfortunately, while a specific answer isn’t always simple. the general one, in my opinion, fortunately is, which relegates the action to one of should I impulsively do that or should I think carefully about the consequences.

Regarding the first issue, I believe that the biggest reward we can receive in life is a simple but honest, “Thank you,” and the satisfaction of having exercised personal service to another, be that “person” a human being, animal, plant or geological structure. Money and power are two of the greatest illusions — soul-traps, if you will — and rarely impart a sense of greater spiritual self-worth like doing something to help another in need. I propose this “answer” in all facets of life, especially “business” and “government” which typically encompass money and power in greatest degree.

As for the second issue, it all, for me, boils down to the axiom, “first, do no harm.” That isn’t an excuse for inaction, but it does invoke the idea of thinking of those affected by my actions and the consequences of my actions on them.

In a distinctly different philosophical approach, I’ve heard it said that “I am just as privileged of the [breath of air; square foot of land; food; potable water; money; power] as anyone else,” though I personally think that an over generalization requiring considerable additional thought as to the circumstances and consequences of any resulting actions.

I explore the primary question in depth through my Amazon-genre-bestseller, fictional Sci-Fu (science-based futuring) novel entitled THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor — https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693859 — which I commend to you not only for it’s exploration of this old/new philosophy but for its unsettling plausibility, dramatic story, and perhaps most important, documenting the actions of three interesting youth set in what well may be our own future.

RAYMOND GAYNOR'S THE EDGE OF MADNESS TO BECOME MULTI-MEDIA HIT

I was so pleased to hear that KS Media Group Inc has purchased THE EDGE OF MADNESS for manga, animation and/or cinematic treatment. Despite my reservations regarding incorporation of some of the elements (the characters, for example, are largely unclothed in the work), I was assured that pre-production plans were already underway.

Already an Audible audiobook read by the incomparable Peter Pollock

A FLIC HERE…

IN continuation of yesterday’s post on eroticism, consider the SweetSixteen. Yet another of the many facets of coming-of-age in NewAmerica:

“For modern lovers, SweetSixteenSalsaSex, when it really clicked, especially when virginal and alternative as in the case of Draff and Billie, offered the enactors a further reward: that all-time most sought-after prize of publiczed intimacy, the exceptional, elusive, once-in-a-lifetime “FirstLoveIConsumated” pop emotag, FLIC. While the best in human literature for the last 2,000 years was replete with tales of persistent love, affection and romance—with only occasional consummation, and even rarer ribald sex—it was only during the last decade that transitioning NewAmerica, unquestionably in the throes of the greatest socio-technological changes of any time in history that sex became acknowledged for its own, as both the reason for and outcome of affection and romance. In the process, the public came to know and passionately embrace FLICs as a new interplanetary obsession. The pre-Jacksonian equivalent of a FLIC—unrequited first love—had, for centuries, besotted the written annals of common, everyday romance books with a typically unsavory outcome. Only recently had NewAmericans elevated such stories above romance to an entirely new plane, and, more recently, a new art form. In spite of what people might say in front of one another or in a familiar crowd, it was the opportunity to see and experience a FLIC first hand that drew everyone irresistibly to the various seemingly spontaneous SweetSixteenSalsaSex exhibitions that popped up in the streets, and, as in the case of Draff and Billie, attended by the participants’ entire social group.“

FLIC, anyone? Only one per person; only once in a lifetime; only during SweetSixteen!

A BIT OF THE EROTIC IN LOVE AND ROMANCE

Romance is a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love, accompanied by a feeling of remoteness from everyday life. Love on the other hand Is an intense feeling of deep affection, generating both interest and pleasure, often surrounding potential sexual attachment. Erotic refers to arousal of actual sexual desire. It is easy to say that humans typically follow romance with love and finally eroticism, but we're also stimulated by the unusual so any progression through or simple appearance of any of the Magical Three, written well, can more than suffice.

By these definitions, THE EDGE OF MADNESS is a romance, a love story and an erotic escapade. Set in the future, it affords the reader the opportunity to experience, enjoy and reflect on romance, love and eroticism as they might exist in the future. Or, equally, as exists in present avant garde society through a “mirror to the future.” Are love, romance and eroticism subject to time and cultural change? I think...yes! And this is why, collectively, I personally think of THE EDGE OF MADNESS a relationship rather than a love, romance and/or erotic novel per se, though strong elements of each appear in plenty.

Taking up where TOTAL MELTDOWN (Borgo/Wildside 2009) by Raymond Gaynor and William Maltese left off, NewAmerica, a shadow of its former United States of America, provides a challenging and dangerous future place for three young firebrands to live.

By far the most profound and dangerous challenges are those surrounding relationships, romance, love, eroticism and sex. And explore, they do, sometimes even holographically, begging the question of what, if anything, now or in the plausible future is “real.” Put on your CandyShades, breathe in a little ContraSpray, open a copy of THE EDGE OF MADNESS and settle back for a T-rip like never before.

THE EDGE OF MADNESS by Raymond Gaynor- Excerpt #3

(This Excerpt is PG-13-rated)

"The entire foray celebrated his continued ascent into adulthood. Billie smelled and looked unfazed. Andry smelled and looked stunned, then incredulous, then annoyed, aggravated and finally disgusted. What is with Simi? Draff wondered, raising his eyebrows at the staccato olfactory slaps he sensed coming from her, all seeming aimed directly at him. Why did he feel so hurt? More important, why should her reactions bother him so deeply, or at all for that matter?
"Draff noticed Billie staring at Simi. And what's with those two? he thought before his better judgment kicked in and he dismissed his conflicting thoughts, reburying himself in the tsunami of forearm-clasps, hugs and well-wishes.
"Everything is going so well, he reflected happily.
"Everything isn't quite coming together as I'd hoped, Simi reflected with concern.
"Everything is going to hell, Billie reflected angrily."

About this Book:
It is my pleasure to present the long awaited sequel to my and William Maltese's pop sexual-political-thriller TOTAL MELTDOWN (Borgo/Wildside 2009), entitled THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020). NewAmerica, a shadow of its former United States of America, is now leaner and meaner. Once again commanding wealth and power thanks to a series of sociopolitical advances and technical innovations like Eugitors, ShimmerSuits, ContraSpray, T-rips, CandyShades and CandyCable, NewAmerica a challenging and dangerous place for three young firebrands to live "on the edge of madness."

Set in the near future, THE EDGE OF MADNESS explores the evolving relationships between three friends, all of whom know little to nothing about their past and even less about their futures. What they do know is that each is unusually gifted: Rob, an uber-conscious male with an enhanced sense of smell; Frann, an ostentatious gay male with an Olympian physique; and Andry, a brilliant moon-child and professional acronymeur with a taste for Wicca...and her two male friends.

THE EDGE OF MADNESS is an exploration of a possible future, where every hedonistic pleasure is available -- if one can afford it. People work in order to purchase the newest technologies promising ultimate pleasure. But as in Aldous Huxley's BRAVE NEW WORLD and George Orwell's 1984, citizens are watched carefully by emotionless “Enforcers” who show up anytime unusual events occur.

Like Huxley and Orwell's works, THE EDGE OF MADNESS has something to say about almost everything present and future. But it's also a love triangle and a coming-of-age story of three youths in a future where anything and everything goes. The ultimate question for them is: Can true love or sanity be found in such a world?

This story will make some excited about what the future may hold while others may recoil at a world of such extremes. Either way, it's an engaging ride in a world where, for example, teachers and students appear holographically together in instructional classrooms while remaining safely at home, begging the question of what, if anything, in this future world is “real." Put on your CandyShades, breathe in a little ContraSpray and settle back for a T-rip like never before.
