IN HONOR OF MY DEAR FRIEND, A. G. HAYES

A. G. HAYES, a world-renown, multi-award-winning author whom I have had the pleasure of knowing and co-authoring with over the years, recently passed from this world to the next. He is known to his many fans, first, as the author of the immensely popular, seven-book “Koski and Falk Special Agent” series, including WHO’S KILLING ALL THE LAWYERS?; THE JUDAS LIST; IMMINENT DANGER; THE CHEMICAL FACTOR; FINDING KATE; QUANTUM DEATH (with Raymond Gaynor); and THE SOLAR TRIANGLE in addition to his unfinished “Kate Keenan Special Assignment” series including 68 VIA CONDOTTI: ETERNITY LTD, and his comic screenplay-novel, CHANG THE MAGIC CAT.

A. G. Hayes’ FINDING KATE is the first Savant-published book to enter into full-scale movie production with filming progressing as I write this. While A. G. Hayes won’t have the pleasure to seeing the results of everyone’ labor in bringing his original manuscript to movie, some months before his passing, K. Simmons Productions filmed him in the role of Tom Stewart, head of Cerberus, Koski and Falk’s “boss,” allowing him to appear posthumously in the film.

I remember A. G. as a quintessential author who always listened judiciously to his characters, writing down as quickly as he could what they revealed to him, in the end, weaving their stories into a mesmerizing whole. A. G. Hayes is already missed by a host of fans, as well as the cast and crew of FINDING KATE.

Instead of a memorial or charity donation, may I recommend honoring his life by buying one or more of his books, or THE COMPLETE KOSKI AND FALK, the ebook version which includes all seven books unabridged?

IMPORTANT MOMENTS…

IN both the authoring and acting worlds, there are important moments to anticipate and thoroughly enjoy if and when they happen. For an author, one is the acceptance of a manuscript by a publisher. Another is seeing and feeling the book in hand. Yet another is that first positive review. And don’t forget that first moment of public recognition.

For an actor, the first is getting before the camera and seeing oneself on the screen. Any screen. Another is getting a role, any role, in a film, followed by that first speaking role, later supporting actor and finally lead actor. Another is seeing oneself on the big screen for the first time. And, yes, reading that first positive review, and that never-to-be-forgotten moment of public recognition. Daniel S. Janik (https://janik.yolasite.com). These are moments authors and actors live for, though not everyone will experience each or even any. The Biblical saying, “Many are called but few are chosen” overlies everything that an author or actor can do to maximize being chosen. But there are a couple of important moments in acting that I’ve recently experienced that I want to share.

First, there is that moment when one feels, inside at gut level, that one is actually a “real” actor (or author). As an actor rather new to the business, I was recently I was invited by my agent to participate in an audition critique with feedback from several well-known casting directors. While the critique was, yes, brutal, it was also enlightening, and in the end, I realized that simply because I was receiving one-on-one feedback from notable casting directors, I was a “real” actor. It was a gooseflesh moment.

The second was when two renown singers, Leon Siu and Malia Elliott (“Leon and Malia”) — http://www.leonandmalia.com/Leon_%26_... — wrote a musical score just for me, Daniel S. Janik, and my actress partner, for a dance scene in an upcoming production. I’ve never had a song written and recorded just for me. It was another tingly, gooseflesh moment. Leon and Malia are considered Hawaii’s ambassadors of Aloha, appearing in person and on screen while providing music for such well known producers as National Geographic. Thank you Leon and Malia!

The third was when a world class author and playwright I know, Mr. William Maltese, wrote a screenplay just for Setsuko and me. Playing a character role in a production is absolutely thrilling, no question about it. My feelings transcended gooseflesh, however, when Setsuko and I did a first read through of WINNOWING. William Maltese, multi-award winning author of over 250 books and screenplays, will soon appear in his own film, the K. Color me gobsmacked and happily so. Important moments come as they may. What’s particularly important is to revel in the moment and tuck those feelings away to recall again and again.

COMING-OF-AGE

COMING-OF-AGE is never easy, irrespective of how easily or not it happens. And, the first one, adolescence, is a doozy for everyone. Looking back, I’m impressed with how every approximate decade of my life brought with it another coming-of-age, for me, mostly related to my work, my “job” being to figure out what message my work had for me about…well…me.

My decades were adolescence, college/university life, physician, author, artist, medical computing analyst, corporate official, military officer, closed environmental life support scientist, artist and actor. Hey, that would make me over 100 — not! But you get the idea. Each “decade” has taught me something more about myself, enriching my life’s journey.

Most experience a coming-of-age as starting out curious and interested but not particularly knowledgeable, segueing into a frenzy of learning, followed by a quick look back from a wiser point-of-view before moving on. That’s been largely true for me, authoring being a good example. With over 60 published books and articles, I feel I’ve attained a certain plane from which I can comfortably write, author and publish, as well as assist others starting out on this pathway. Me, I’m an out-of-the-box author be it non-fiction — UNLOCK THE GENIUS WITHIN: Neurobiological Trauma, Teaching and Transformative Learning (R&L Education 2005) by Daniel S. Janik, or fiction — THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2021) by Raymond Gaynor, a pen name as fictitious as the novel. But it was completely different for acting.

I came into acting late in life and started at the top playing lead actor in the K. Simmons Production of STATIC (2021). It was probably one of the most OJT experiences of my life. But the point is, starting as lead actor, I have had the years of “usual” experience “working one’s way up” to try to catch up. Not that I was a total newbie to acting. Looking back, all of my various “decades” involved acting in one form or another. Still, currently, I’m busy, busy, busy simply catching up with all the knowledge and experience most actors slowly acquire and bring with them to the pinnacle of their career, a sort of reverse coming-of-age decade that’s proving both intense and exciting, with one audition after another, acting, modeling, voice and technical training all pressing. Still, I’m pleased to be a supporting actor in THE PERFECT ILLUSION, THE MALTESE COLLECTION, FINDING KATE and MOCOS, all scheduled for release in 2023, and even background actor in several made-for-television series like FANTASY ISLAND and NCIS:Hawaii.

WHAT THE FORK?

WHILE eating brunch today (as actor Daniel S. Janik always concerned about weight, aka sedentary author Daniel Janik/Raymond Gaynor/Gary Martine), I found myself pondering the quintessentially classic question: Which is “more betta,” the knife, fork or spoon, which being as my partner is Japanese, immediately expanded to include hashi (chopsticks) and, in deference to America’s love affair with fast foods, fingers?

Given the universality of finger use early in life, it’s environmentally supportive nature, and availability world world wide, fingers instantly won out. However, given the adult penchant for games and tests of cultural adeptness that establish social classes or levels, the debated between knives, forks, spoons and chopsticks remained. Of course, chopsticks instantly won out based on the sheer numbers of users, while metal knives, forks and spoons favored the environment.

The sheer difficulty of choosing between knives, forks or spoons required a trip to the internet, to which the digitally-connected world replied that spoons win overall, as they are the most versatile of the three tools. Knives came next, because they can serve as a weapon at the table, moderating behavior and establishing social power. Okay. that leaves forks holding the tail, hence the title of today’s post.

As the author of my newest novel THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2021) by Raymond Gaynor, and never one to miss a chance to promote the Amazon genre bestseller, I feel obligated to state, with authority, that the work contains not a single word of enlightenment surrounding the superiority of knife, fork, spoon, chopsticks or fingers, though mention is made of mono-molecular flak suits capable of protecting the wearer from bullets, knives and shives. And then there’s the usual Eugitors, shimmer-suits, contraspray, t-rips, candyshades, candycable, Enforcers and other plausible technological devices of the future…but I digress. Even if THE EDGE OF MADNESS doesn’t in any way lend support to solving the knife/fork/spoon/chopstick/finger conundrum, it’s in my and numerous reviewers’ opinions one heck-of-an-interesting read.

THOUGHT CRIMES

SHADES of George Orwell and his dystopian futurist novel, 1984, that date having already passed into history, with thoughtcrimes moving from speculative literature to the movies with the adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s novel, MINORITY REPORT. What’s next? Legislation against the use of discriminatory pronouns in thought or dream?

What this brings up for me is the issue of how much control needs to be exerted to counter extremism and weaponization today? Where is the flaw that so desperately needs correction? Is it evolutionary (survival of the fittest)? Is it neurobiological (the traumatic learning pathway)? Psychological (the need to justify action to rid guilt)? Social (where popularity currently outweighs logic, reasoning and science) or the “new military thinking” where battles are fought, won and lost in the mind? Or maybe just a special thought police dedicated to keeping everyone’s thoughts in line with current cultural norms, whatever they my be, honoring the eons old axiom, “The winners write history.”

More to the point, however, is the need for a basic definition of what a thoughtcrime or even crime in general is, and whether thought without action should take preventative precedence over blatant criminal actions. And what to DO about thoughtcrimes? Electroconvulsive therapy? Lobotomization? Drugs? Prison time? An acquaintance suggested a more practical course: jailing all male adolescents until they turn 40.

As an actor, I’ve had to consider the meaning of thoughtcrime in terms of “getting into” a character role. As an author, I’ve had to consider whether fiction, especially historical fiction, is a thoughtcrime. Or, as one author suggested, a REAL crime against humanity. Go figure. Or, go think. Or, go berserk and read THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aigno 2020) by Raymond Gaynor.

WHERE HAS ALL THE “INFRASTRUCTURE” GONE? LONG TIME PASSING…

PROMISED by Reds and Blues alike for decades, but especially after the COVID “shot across the bow,” updating our nation’s infrastructures has been much hooted, but barely addressed issue that is now beginning to impact all citizens more and more.

Take the internet, for example. The key to doing business in the future is a necessary shift from “in-person crowd sales” at brick and mortar stores, to “individual service via distance online” stores. The problem: the internet. What used to be the ninth wonder of the world, has become a criminal playground. And, instead of the government providing MORE secure access and individual services, the seemingly constant lack of governmental concern regarding scammers, pishers, hackers and other — let’s call them what they are: criminals — all the way up to cyber-warfare by foreign nations is taking its toll. Who to call when the average citizen experiences an internet “crime?” I certainly don’t know, and the few times I’ve called the police, FBI or FTC about an interstate scam, I’ve been mostly electronically referred elsewhere.

On the individual consumer scale, securing the internet is essential in order to move from “in-person crowd sales” to “individual service via distance online” stores. Without a well-guarded and well-policed internet, the future of United States business remains in jeopardy.

On a bigger scale, there’s no point in going to the moon or Mars, if there’s insufficient infrastructure to live and work off Earth, and eventually establish vigorous commercial trade with good ole’ aging Mother Earth. As dictatorships pop up and slowly surround us, we desperately need “lanes of communication” (meaning free trade) along key planet corridors in order to survive, and, done right, thrive.

In my Amazon genre bestseller, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor, I speculate regarding the most plausible results of facing the digital infrastructure network “problem,” and the failings of those unwilling or unable to do so. One result is the appearance of “Fast Eddies,” professionals who promote solutions and products of instant personal benefit. The decades old belief that uncontrolled greed can and will somehow resolve today’s big problems, is, while inviting, neither reasonable nor even plausible. IMPUNING EDUCATION

LET’S face it: The split in politics that strongly divides us is being reflected in government, foreign affairs, legislation, health care, transportation and, yes, education. But what’s with the extreme splitting at the expense of the quality of our lives? I’m going to take a big leap and say it’s not really politics (the “pop” explanation) or COVID (the shot across the bow) as so many claim, but simply lack of an effective future infrastructure from which to develop. This is, in my opin, especially so in education.

Since we can’t stop our own exponential procreation, the “real” issue that’s left is that humanity has, as yet, nowhere to go other than our increasingly crowded, little, brown-blue-and-white marble flying through the void of space. And even if we had the means to rocket off the Earth to colonize another planet, we lack any social infrastructure to do so. What’s missing today, again in my not-so-humble opinion, is a way to coordinate what we need, want, desire and do in a manner that doesn’t use the failed “crowd” approach we remain so dependent on and, of which we find it so difficult to let go. I’ve often mentioned the need for a transition from “crowd sales” to “individual service” in regard to business. In education, much of the failure of learning and “burn out” in both teachers and students, comes from hanging onto “crowd teaching” when, in fact, it’s already failed. First, in an increasingly populous world, crowding is an irrational even deadly approach to accomplishing anything. Think kids, classrooms and COVID. “Crowd education” while a multi-million dollar business, has utterly failed in regard to meeting the needs, wants and desires of students and parents, with teachers leaving the profession in ever increasing numbers.

The key is a complex paradigm shift to individual, curiosity-driven, discovery-based “distance” learning that will provide the necessary educational infrastructure and reference resources for “off-Earth” migration and planetary colonization. Of course, this shift in education will need to occur alongside similar shifts in all other aspects of what we often loosely call our “society,” (I use the word “society” here in recognition of the disturbing often deathly side-effects of the current push towards deglobalization and “nationalization”). IN or around 1993, as the University of Hawaii Extension Service Water Quality Agent for Northshore Oahu, I served as executive producer for a “wake up” documentary called CLEAN WATER, COMMON GROUND (National Film Network 1999). Twenty-nine minutes, with a special edition including an additional twenty-minute studio discussion, CLEAN WATER, COMMON GROUND traveled around the world several times, garnering awards like its two-Telly Awards for best documentary. REVENGE OF THE AIs

HAVING just recently posted a number of times about AIs (Artificial Intelligences), it surprised me when several days ago weird things began happening, all AI-related.

First, my AI-controlled car door locks began failing off and on.

Then, my Macintosh MacBook Pro and iPhone started acting wonky.

At the same time, I suddenly couldn’t access my WordPress blog account, and worse yet, internet connectivity on my supposedly private dedicated subscriber line (DSL) began losing bandwidth, making a solid internet connection difficult if not impossible to maintain.

Coincidence? I like to think so, but it does leave me wondering, now that everything that suddenly went crazy is suddenly stable again. I’ll have to see how the AIs distributed throughout the world and connected by the internet respond to this post. Either way, I think I’ve a great plot for a new book, don’t you think, with full deference to my author colleague, A. G. Hayes’ and his delightfully tongue-in-cheek AI novel 68 VIA CONDOTTI: ETERNITY LTD (Savant 2019).
