RUMBLINGS IN THE BUSINESS-VERSE

THINKING about the idea of the all-inclusive, unified-field-theory multiverse? While we, as humans, continue trying to understand the nature of nature, how about the all-inclusive, unified-“money-and-power”-theory business-verse. It’s difficult enough to understand the nature of business, a totally human creation, rapidly becoming a force demanding to be reckoned with.

In the multiverse, the idea is that multiple universes exist and quite possibly sometimes even intersect briefly. Maybe creating new universes, or maybe black holes, or even wormholes from one universe to another. Who knows? In the business-verse, it seems to me more like a human-created pandemic, slowly invading every sector of our everyday lives, monetizing them, then one-by-one, slowly placing them into an overall business-verse. Like the multi-verse, we humans seem to have little awareness, knowledge or wisdom concerning the business-verse, other than an occasional awareness that we are part of something really big but without a clue what the endgame, if there is one, might be. Which, in the end, hints at being able to answer eternal question of the role(s) of destiny, fate and/or free will.

I believe there’s growing evidence to support the idea of an evolving business-verse. For example, I recall a practicing physician the insidious infiltration of business into the practice of medicine, at that time a human service, not a business. Then, I recall as an educator, the same takeover of education, again originally a human service, not a business. Then, as a NASA-affiliated research, the same again concerning the exploration of space, originally a human service, but with the “commercialization of space,” clearly a business. Remember the Space Shuttle and space station Freedom, now basically platforms for business in space. In fact, as a USNR Commander, I had the opportunity of arguing the role of the military in space: protecting the “lanes of communication” between earth and extra-terrestrial development. And the whole process is not without its “hidden” partners, namely geopolitical governments (in many instances these days, meaning money, power and control), and now the whole burgeoning field of technology and its “brain,” Artificial Intelligence, though the latter is already a subject worthy of its own separate postings.

HEALTH, WEALTH OR HAPPINESS?

WHICH one would YOU choose if you could be granted only one?

Health would promise a longer, quality life, which, if you live in the USA, could be a boon. If you live elsewhere that might or might not be a boon. Still, if one has health, wealth and happiness can, if desired, follow.

Wealth wold promise a more varied life, though, without health it might be either tempered, or very short. Then there’s the issue of whether wealth (or it’s one step up cousin, power) ever really brings happiness. They do, however, bring countless accountants, lawyers, tax collectors and fast Eddies into one’s life. And there’s the old saw that “You can’t take it with you” suggesting that the accumulation of wealth as a hedge against mortality isn’t very realistic. I’ve always held that if one lives one’s life to best of one’s ability, well and respectfully, sharing wealth with those who desperately need it, enough money will somehow be provided. then there’s the idea that there is no such thing as a little wealth. And finally, it’s always been my opinion that money and power are two very lethal illusions. Still, can you imagine a world without currency?

Happiness is a common ultimate goal, going back to the ancient Greeks, probably preceding them and Western Civilization. To indirectly quote the Greek philosopher Plato: A life committed to knowledge and virtue will result in happiness and self-fulfillment. To achieve happiness, one should render him or herself immune to changes in the material world and strive to gain the knowledge of the eternal, immutable forms that reside in the intelligible realm (https://www.thecollector.com/how-to-b...). Then again, happiness can be fleeting, constantly changes in character and often vacillates back and forth. Ah, fickle happiness! Personally, my life partner, Setsuko Tsuchiya, and I partner dance for joy, something we can mostly count on to bring back happiness whenever we so desire.

As we’re fast approaching the holidays — explicitly the New Year — it’s traditionally a time to pause, reflect and commit to one or more resolutions to make one’s life healthier, wealthier or happier. Did I forget wiser? In my book, knowledge is being able to use something learned to solve different problems, and wisdom is about knowing when to apply knowledge so as not to hurt others. My opinion is that we get wiser with each new year, whether we “like” it or not. The question is what we will do with all that accumulated wisdom. WILL MOVIE/TV VIOLENCE BECOME EVEN MORE VIOLENT IN 2023?

WHAT exactly is it with “entertainment” and gratuitous violence? While it may be partially or even mostly the case that viewers today want and are willing to pay for more violence and more “authenticity” surrounding violence. as an author and actor, I believe it’s not as simple an equation as that. As evidence, I present a recent BBC article entitled, “1923 and the violent TV universe that has electrified the US” — https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/2.... TV series and movies these days can cost millions of dollars, and producers, in my experience, are keenly aware of what is on the minds of their viewers. Movies that play off of public concerns and fears certainly seem to have a distinct “edge” over those that are more humanistic and “timeless” in their appeal.

As a retired physician and interested neurobiologist (see UNLOCK THE GENIUS WITHIN by Daniel S. Janik — https://www.amazon.com/dp/1578862914), I’m more than acutely aware of the power of “Monkey see, monkey do,” one of the most powerful aphorisms I know. And TV and movie “entertainment” is definitely wedded to exceptional violence. Maybe it’s a reflection of our mortality, that guillotine blade that forever hangs over each of our heads, or constant fear and rumors of war, that constitute our uniquely human situation. Maybe it’s a sign of a far too crowded world. Maybe there really is a darkness spreading throughout the world as portrayed in Tolkien’s classic THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Me, I still hold to my personal belief that darkness is merely the absence of light. Call me a delusional optimist, and you’re probably be right, but I like to cling to the idea that most people are decent and the world, as Douglas Adams in THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY characterized it, is “mostly safe.”

As for what can be done, if anything actually needs to be done, about violence in entertainment, I try to do my best as an author and actor, avoiding publications and productions that include gratuitous violence, especially violent sex. WITH A “WEY, HEY, BLOW THE MAN DOWN…

HAVING left San Francisco for the paradisiacal climes of the Hawaiian Islands, I suddenly find myself hunkering down today and supposedly tomorrow for a tropical storm alert replete with 60 mph wind gusts, intermittent 45 degree pelting rain, thunder, lightening and hail. Yes, hail! Can you believe it? Well don’t. It may be coming our way, but it hasn’t arrived en mass, yet. The operative word being “yet.” In the meantime I busier than I’ve ever been with acting and authoring.

I’m scheduled to appear tomorrow as background in the filming of another future TV series (sorry, can’t reveal, again, yet). IF the Weather Folk prove less than correct. IF power doesn’t go out. If filming isn’t cancelled due to weather. IF, well, a lot of things “up in the air” don’t cooperate. If I stay home I’ll continue working on my new novel, PROPHECY, and together with Setsuko, on blocking/staging/shotlisting our own film, WINNOWING — https://janik.yolasite.com/winnowing.php — gifted us by the incomparable author, screenwriter and actor William Maltese, who is currently starring in the multi-award-winning film, THE MALTESE COLLECTION — https://ksmediagroupinc.com/maltese-c... — to be released publicly sometime very soon.

Having acted and Executive Produced but never produced, directed or filmed a film, WINNOWING is proving an engaging educational experience, to say the least. Though thoroughly intriguing, it’s a stretch from writing to filming, the former being word-dependent storytelling, the latter being visually-explicit storytelling. Combining experience from both should prove a huge one-up to my authoring, and, well quality is everything in the entertainment business. We’ll see.

For today, I’ll be satisfied if we don’t get blown off Oahu, and return to the paradisiacal weather for which I came to Hawaii. And

TODAY TODAY

LIVING in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, is like living in a suspended, sunny California day forever. At least until tomorrow, when the weatherfolk are predicting a strong bout of cold, thunderstorms, lightening, thunder, torrential rain and even icy hail, the latter God(dess) forbid. I’m trying to imagine icy roads in Honolulu, if only from momentarily road-coating hail. Actually, I can’t imagine it. The nearest thing is snow on the top of the world’s tallest volcano, Mauna Kea, or the unusual phenomenon of “ice rivers” — https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2022/12... — reported yesterday. Then again, most Hawaiians and even tourists don’t drive the summit, so ice-related accidents are rare.

But today, it’s sunny and warm here. Another perfect day in paradise with the exception of trade winds. None. Nada. Even more unusual, not surface winds. Just total calm on land and the nearby flat and sparkling ocean. Who except the weatherfolk could imagine tomorrow’s predicted cold and storm? Not me. Today being halfway to the December holidays, I’m busy thinking of last minute gifts and what to prepare for Christmas dinner.

So, I get it: What with the world news, it may seem quixotic, even silly, to be living solidly in TODAY rather than the past or tomorrow. But honestly, it’s all we really have. Especially an actor and author like myself. I believe one of our purposes in existing is to enjoy this world and steward it so the next generation can, too. Okay, so that latter part is living a bit in the future, but it’s really all about living in the present and being aware of the consequences of what I’m doing today. Living responsibly in the TODAY, wouldn’t you agree? The bottomline is that at least for today, I’m living today in the today, alive and appreciative of every moment. Happy [Today] Holidays!

I wonder what that singular word invokes for you? For me, it means sharing the spotlight with others, including my sister’s cat, “Bugs,” who just recently became a celebrity showcasing a new kind of cat food dish that she apparently endorses whole heartedly. Okay, okay. I always make it a point to share the spotlight with my dance partner and actress, Setsuko Tsuchiya, who, BTW should be back on the set with me, filming a featured “honor dance” for FINDING KATE. In the first of an anticipated six episodes, we dance for an executive producer and studio head who is about to retire with another character’s money. Hey, it’s Hollywood, or, in this case, Hawaiiwood. And our dance has an amazing effect on him, but to say more would be a spoiler. But I digress.

Bugs, my sister Mary’s cat, debuted in style, hitting the internet straight on, attracting comments like “Is she lead meower of a new K-pop group?” and “Where’s she been all my life?” “How can I get my paws on a headshot with your paw-print, please?” flowing in one after another. Can’t answer for her, but I’m sure she’d say, “Meow!”

Having just finished playing a background “Mental Hospital Patient” in another episode of the January-upcoming TV series, Magnum P. I., I’m inclined to agree with Bugs: “Meow!” So what am I doing while waiting for Setsuko and my moment before the camera in FINDING KATE — https://ksmediagroupinc.com/finding-kate?
