The audiobook version of my book Man Vs Child is a Hoopla Digital “Hidden Gem”
Great for people in cars who shouldn’t be reading, or people that don’t know me well enough to invite me over to read it to them in person.

I’m Glad My Daughter is Not a Jerk
I complain about my kid sometimes, but I am grateful that she is actually a nice person.
Think about the number of jerks you meet, the number of jerks you read about and see on TV. When did those people become jerks? Did their parents know they were turning into jerks? I guess they were raised to be jerks? Were their parents jerks?
Think about babies: babies can be a pain, but they are not jerks. They demand attention, they annoy you, they don’t lift a finger to help you even when you could use some help. But they are babies. They aren’t doing it to be jerks.
Toddlers can be jerks. But most often they are being jerks because they have retained the selfishness of babies and haven’t yet learned empathy or manners. Or sometimes they’re just hungry or tired.
It’s probably somewhere in the little kid stage that jerks are formed, where the natural jerkiness of baby/toddlerhood isn’t corrected by parents and teachers. Or where jerk parents encourage jerk behavior.
Then again, everyone is a jerk sometimes. Maybe being a jerk is like being tall or fast. If I remember my science, tall people are just given more tall genes than short people, right? And genetics can be weird. Sometimes you see perfectly nice parents that seem overwhelmed by their jerk kid; maybe jerkiness is a recessive trait, unexpressed in two nice parents who both, tragically, pass along that recessive gene to their jerk kid. Ya know: Jj mates with Jj and they have a jj.
However it happens, I’m glad that my daughter isn’t a jerk.

Math Mess
I ask you: how is a kid supposed to learn ANYTHING, let alone math, when their textbook looks like this? Are we sure kids suffer from ADD? Maybe it’s just the books that have ADD. I mean - look at this.
This isn’t even the worst page. It might be extreme to execute this textbook’s designers, but how did this happen?

Best Humor Books of 2017
Toot toot! I’m tooting my own horn because my book got picked as one of Amazon’s Best Humor and Entertainment Books of 2017!
If you’re a Doug Moe super-fan, you might be thinking “didn’t I already hear this?” The answer is - No! A few months ago, it was named in the Best Humor and Entertainment Books of 2017 *so far*
So now that it’s the end of the year, my book has defended its title, so to speak. I’m in this list with John Hodgman, Whitney Cummings, Chuck Klosterman, Kelly Oxford, etc. - I’m an underdog on this one for sure.
And of course, if you’ve bought it or left a review, thanks so much. If not - it makes a great gift for any parent, even moms! Think about picking up a copy if you haven’t yet. Yay!

Grandpa Name Dibs
My dad was just visiting - it’s hard to picture yourself as a grandpa visiting your grownup kid in the future.
What will she be like as an adult? Will I be a cool, fun grandpa? Or a drag? Will she have kids that you’ll be the grandpa to?
We call my dad “Poppie.” Is it too early to request “Big Peepaw” as my nickname?

I watched one of the new Black Mirror episodes the other night (episode 2 if you want to play along at home). Without spoiling too much, it’s about an ultimate bit of helicopter parenting through technology and like the best of the Black Mirror episodes, it gets you thinking. How much can you protect your child? How much privacy are children entitled to? When do you let go?
It’s great, very worth a watch.
If the producers of Black Mirror are looking for more dystopian futures involving parenting, let me pitch a few ideas:
At what point does a series of snacks replace a meal?If your child tortures you by complaining loudly about homework, is it okay to replace her with a robot?
What about if someone saved every piece of art their child made and eventually couldn’t find their child under all the work? It’s probably okay to throw a lot of this stuff out, right?
What about an episode about a child repeatedly yelling for you, but then saying “never mind” after you’ve gotten up?
