Things I’m grateful for that start with the letter B:

Bees and the honey they make. I add a teaspoon of Manuka honey to my morning smoothie every day! Bradbury -- my favorite author of all time. I love his melodic style of writing. Buckwheat -- I love me some buckwheat pancakes. They used to be a standard in restaurants when I was growing up, but now you rarely find them. I’m surprised they haven’t made a comeback because they are naturally gluten free.

What are you grateful for today?

What are you grateful for today?

There are lots of things to be grateful for in the world in general, and in my life. So, with Thanksgiving coming up, I thought I’d dedicate the majority of my social posts this months to gratitude … starting with the letter A.

I am grateful for Apples, Asimov and Autumn. Apples are a versatile fruit, tasty on their own, and in both sweet and savory dishes. Isaac Asimov is one of my favorite writers and I’m most fond of his Robot novels and short stories. And I love the colors of autumn.

Halloween/October bookish fact No. 8

Michael Chrichton, born 10/23/42, wrote science and medical thrillers. Jurassic Park had me so enthralled I once read all night using a pen-flashlight under my blankets and dreamt of velociraptors hunting me in an abandoned school building.

Halloween/October bookish fact No. 7

It strikes me as odd that the person who wrote the disturbing tale of The Picture of Dorian Gray is also the person who wrote the lighthearted comedy The Importance of Being Ernest. Oscar Wilde, born on 10/16/1854, was an odd one, wasn’t he?

Halloween/October bookish fact No. 6

Frank Herbert celebrated his 101st birthday on Oct. 8 (well, we would have if he were alive). He is best known for the Dune Chronicles. A film based on his work was released last Friday, but it is not the first attempt to bring his epic tale to the screen. I’m looking forward to seeing it! How about you?

Halloween/October bookish fact No. 5:

Anne Rice, who celebrated her birthday on Oct. 4, is probably best known for her The Vampire Chronicles novels which started with Interview with the Vampire and introduced us to the Vampire Lestat. Lestat has been portrayed by Tom Cruise in the film adaptation of the first novel, Interview with the Vampire (1994), and then Stuart Townsend in the screen adaptation of the third novel, Queen of the Damned (2002). The second novel, The Vampire Lestat, which tells how Lestat became a vampire, has not yet been made into a film.

Halloween/October bookish fact No. 4

Edgar Allan Poe originally wanted a parrot to repeat the word “nevermore”, in poem The Raven.

Now, that would have been a very different poem!

Halloween/October bookish fact No. 3:

P.G. Wodehouse, creator of the Jeeves and Wooster series was born on Oct. 15, 1943.

My father introduced me to the characters. My mother helped me discover them on books on tape. And I own a cow creamer because of them.

Hugh Laurie, known for playing the title character in House, was brilliant in the role as the goofy Berty Wooster in the BBC series based on the stories.
