Not Five, but One…

Greetings from Massachusetts, where I am writing this in the midst of a game of kickball, a nail salon being run by my younger cousins, and dinner preparations. I am here on the Cape with my extended family (cousins upon cousins upon cousins) and it is gorgeous and lovely and crazy, all at once. Which I why I don't think I can even try to do a full Five this week. (My daughter and her cousin Tae are currently running laps past me, in the midst of kickball rounds. Whoosh! Whoosh! They have so ...

The Five!

1. Okay, so I am back online with (just about) everything up and running. If I ever doubted that I had a bit of an, um, addiction to the internet (or maybe just a heavy dependence) this little nature-imposed hiatus made it clear. I missed everything! Twitter, Google News, Facebook….oh, man. The list goes on and on. But now that I HAVE been away, I think I will be less obsessed about checking everything, able to be more present and unplug much more. No, really. Really! Okay, I don't think so e...

boom!

If you've noticed that I've been a bit AWOL from the internet this weekend, this is the reason:

Actually, the reason is the bolt of lightning that HIT our phone line, knocking the phone box off the house and this DSL filter off our main phone. YIKES! It struck a tree right outside our house, shaking everything (my nerves included). Also hit: my friend's car, parked right near the tree, and our electric chicken fence. My modem, router, and all the phones: totally fried. Satellite receivers...

The Five!

1. Yes, it's back! I know I've been slack about The Five for awhile now, mostly because I was traveling so much I rarely knew where I was, much less what day I was updating, if I could at all. But now I am home and I KNOW it is Friday, so here I am. We are in serious dog-days here right now. It's hot, big storms in the afternoon (my kid loves the puddles) town is still dead, and it's blissfully quiet. Especially since a couple of days back, my husband and his friend Colin rounded up four of o...

this and that, and that…

So about a week and a half after returning from ALA, I am FINALLY getting back into my old routine. I'm still yawning more than I'd like, and my dry cleaning bills were OUTRAGEOUS, but I took off my last manicure for awhile and bought a new pair of black slim Havaianas. Feeling more like myself (my home self, not Writer On Tour self) every day. I've been spending my days catching up with my daughter, going through potato chip/mini bar nut mix withdrawl, and trying to process where, exactly...

July?

Somehow, it IS the seventh month of the year, although how that happened I am not exactly sure. I've been catching up on my sleep (slowly) and trying to simplify, simplify, simplify (getting better at it) and things are gradually coming back into focus. I really was freaked by how out of it I was earlier this week. I haven't felt like that since I was a new mom, getting sleep only in 3-4 hour stretches. Whoa. Sorry for the gibberish, both here and on Twitter. Next time I am that crazy, I...

ALA, NOLA, ZZZZ….

It's a blog of acronyms! No, not really. But I'd be lying if I didn't say that looking at that heading above makes me feel just as scrambled as my brain actually is right now. Does that make sense? Yeah, didn't think so.

Really, I shouldn't be doing a blog right now. I'm too tired and worn out. Other things I shouldn't be doing: driving, talking to people, being vertical. I mean, seriously. I have not been this brain dead since my daughter was a newborn. I literally feel CRAZY I am so...

integrity

Okay, so this was SUPPOSED to be a blog post solely about the great event Flyleaf put on for WHAT HAPPENED TO GOODBYE last night. It was, in a word, awesome. I mean, check out the sign:

We arrived with the cars, got them unloaded from the trailers and into place:

Then headed over to the Flying Burrito for dinner, where I ate my weight in queso, chips, and the trademark Mexican Trainwreck (beans, cheese, salsa, guac, green onions, sour cream). It was so awesome, both the food and the...

Local event TONIGHT!

Okay, so I'm doing a hundred things at once right now, so this won't be a proper blog post. If my posts are ever proper. Anyway, just a QUICK reminder that I'm doing a hometown, Chapel Hill event TONIGHT at Flyleaf Books on Martin Luther King Blvd (formerly Airport Road) at 7pm. It's between Foster's and….The Flying Burrito. Yes, you read that right. About twenty years ago I was rolling silverware and wiping down menus at the restaurant, hoping against hope that I'd somehow, someday, publish ...
