*sniff*

I have to say, announcing that I am giving up regular posts on this blog has been more emotional than I expected. Ten years (and one month, as of today) is a LOT of entries! It got me thinking about all the moments this blog has captured for me, big and small. Like, for instance, here's my very first entry, over on Livejournal, all those years ago, on August 16, 2001:

When I sold my first book I was working at a restaurant called the Flying Burrito. When the novel was published I felt like...

The Five!

1. The days are getting shorter, and I can feel it happening: that winter funk approaching. Ugh. Contrary to appearances, I do like a lot of things about the fall. It's winter I really have trouble with. Both seasons, though, have the whole shorter-days-less-light thing going on and I always seem to find myself feeling blue as both start happening. I try to do what I can: sit in the sun for a bit every day, smile as much as possible (it really works, I swear, for the whole cheering up thing) ...

September 12, 2011

All of a sudden, this morning, it hit me: I'm going to Canada next week! Whoa. I kept thinking that this trip was, you know, in late September. Which was forever away. But it is NOT and I need to get my act together. I have been in non-book mode for weeks now, which means I'm basically just hanging with my kid, wearing flip flops and t-shirts, and spending most of my time and money at Whole Foods. (It's a sickness with me and that place, I swear to you. In fact, I am there RIGHT now...

The Five!

1. To be honest, it feels a bit weird to be doing a Five today. This weekend, with the anniversary of 9/11, I'm definitely feeling more solemn and quiet, and I'm not sure blogging is appropriate. Or WHAT is appropriate, actually. I just can't believe it's been ten years. It really doesn't feel that long, but at the same time it feels like longer. Does that make sense? I know it doesn't. I DO know that my cousin Eric, who was a baby when I went and held him that day for comfort, is now 11 and ...

STOMP!

Okay, so as I'm sitting here writing this, there are rockets shooting past my office windows. Stomp Rockets, that is. If you're not acquainted with these things, they are foam rockets that you send aloft by stomping (or jumping) on a small air cushion attached to their launcher. WHOOSH! And up they go. My husband bought my daughter some for her birthday (although really, he bought them for himself, I think) and they have been far and away her favorite gift of all. Which is saying something...

The Five!

1. Coming in a BIT under the wire today, but at least I'm here, right? It's been a nutty week, with preschool starting AND planning my daughter's birthday party. She turns 4 today (SOB!) and I can't believe it's been four years since they held her up in front of me, pink-faced and squawling, and I burst into tears. Literally it was the first time EVER I had done that, immediate, full-on crying at a second's notice. Welcome to motherhood. Now I have been all choked up all day, looking at her, ...

regressing…

So I'm having one of those weeks (I know, it's only Wednesday) where I am really not wanting to be a grown-up. You know the type. Too much responsibility, bills to pay, errands to run. Issues to handle, laundry to fold, dinners to come up with. I keep thinking back to when I was a kid, and all I had to do was sit on the couch (usually in front of the TV, it was the 70′s) and wait to be told it was time to come eat dinner, or go to sleep, or get up. Why did I not appreciate that more? And...

The Five!

1. Okay, so it's 3:39 on Friday as I am writing this, and the wind is JUST starting to ruffle the trees a bit. Hurricane Irene is getting closer and closer to the NC coast, expected to make a big hit this weekend. Some models have it coming in right around Morehead City, which is superclose to Emerald Isle, the beautiful (and beloved) beach town on which I based Colby in my books. If you like group panic, you must be REALLY enjoying the constant news updates, crazy forecast models...
