Media Purgatory

Media Purgatory. Maybe that's exactly where we are at this specific moment in time.

According to Wikipedia, "Purgatory is the condition or process of purification in which the souls of those who die in a state of grace are made ready for Heaven... John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, believed in an intermediate state between death and the final judgment and in the possibility of 'continuing to grow in holiness there', but Methodism does not officially affirm his belief and denies the...

Spend An Hour With Malcolm Gladwell

Recently, in a shopping mall, I spotted a copy of Malcolm Gladwell's book, Outliers, for sale at HMV. It's hard to believe it, but Gladwell must be the first business book author who is truly a rock star.

That wasn't the only time I have felt this way about Gladwell. A few weeks prior to the shopping mall incident, I was on a flight and a female flight attendant was talking to another female passenger who was sitting one row behind me, and the conversation went something like this:

Flight...

Back To Basics

As the New Year approaches, it's easy to get caught up in the "what's next?" or "what should we be looking at in 2010?" questions. The truth is that your best bet is to ensure that what you currently have is really working for you.

Here's a little end-of-year Digital Marketing check-list to help ensure that you're getting the basics right:

Domain names. Ensure that all of your existing domain names are up-to-date and paid. Ensure that your live domain names are all pointing to the right...

Social Media Snake Oil And The Elusive ROI

Most companies and brands won't have any level of satisfaction from Social Media Marketing unless we - as the collective practitioners - can communicate and demonstrate a high level of ROI and value.

Most modern marketing agencies have to come to this realization. One of the only ways we're ever going to move the needle and get dollars to shift from the tried, tested and (apparently) true ways of mass media advertising, is to get better at creating tangible results and selling those stories ...

How Journalism Survives New Media (By Saving Itself)

Just because newspapers are suffering, it does not mean that Journalism is dying (far from it). That being said, we still need to figure out who is going to pay for quality (and unbiased) Journalism in a world struggling to find a viable business model for newspapers.

After posting the amazing presentation that Jay Rosen gave to Journalists (How Mass Media Learns About New Media), it occurred to me that no matter how much money the mass media newspapers are bleeding, there will always be...

Social Media Guide For Small Business

Mashable is one of the best (and only) Blogs that will really keep you up-to-speed on what's happening (and what's not) in the Social Media realm.

The trouble with all of this content (and, we're not just talking about the mass output of Mashable here, but all Blogs and news sites) is that the information flows like a fire hydrant, and the best shot any of us have of really ingesting all of this digital content goodness is to use a news reader (like Google Reader) and an online bookmarking t...

How Mass Media Learns About New Media

In trying to understand the newspaper and publishing industry, there are few brains bigger than Jay Rosen.

Rosen is definitely one of the smartest guys in the rooms when it comes to understanding mass media, new media, journalism and the future of the news business.
