Googled!

Ken Auletta is the author of Googled - The End of the World As We Know It (which was published early last month). The book is already a business best-seller.

Auletta is an accomplished author (eleven books) and has written the Annals of Communication column for The New Yorker magazine since 1992. Googled is described as: "telling the story of how it [Google] formed and crashed into traditional media businesses-from newspapers to books, to television, to movies, to telephones, to...

The Changing Face Of Social Media Marketing

2009 was a big year for Social Media Marketing. 2010 is going to be a bigger year for Social Media Marketing. It's also going to be a very different year.

That was the overall theme of the news item, Social Network Spending Shifts, from eMarketer yesterday:

"Overall, eMarketer predicts US online social network ad spending will reach more than $1.21 billion in 2009, an increase of 3.9% over last year. 2010 will see stronger growth of 7.1%. With total US online ad spending falling this year...

The Shift From An Advertising World To A Marketing World

When most people think of "marketing," they're actually thinking of "advertising." That's all going to change.

In the grand scheme of things, advertising is a segment of marketing. That's the official structure of it all. That's what they'll teach you in any Marketing 101 course. Within the sphere of everything that is marketing, advertising has played such an important and large role, that many of us (and that includes the industry professionals) sometimes lose touch and forget about this. ...

On Shopping

At this time of year, the tensions run high. Brawls in shopping malls and near-death experiences in the parking lot. In all of this, the face of shopping continues to change.

Sometimes, the transition in human behaviour happens very fast (like how quickly we moved from regular DVDs to Blu-ray), while other innovations happen more slowly over time (like how we went from landlines to mobile phones). Sometimes, the change is slower because the technology is more advanced, while in other...

The Essential iPhone App Collection For The New Media Professional

iPhone apps all all the rage, but which are the best iPhone apps for the New Media Professional?

Here is a fairly comprehensive list of great iPhone apps (broken down into categories and then alphabetized). Please note that all of these apps are free (unless marked otherwise). I also asked my Twitter community which apps they use, and it came back with the "usual suspects" (with some discrepancies when it comes to Twitter on the iPhone).

Media Hacks Podcast #22 Is Now Live

Episode #182 of Six Pixels of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to. It's also episode #22 of Media Hacks.

It's hard to believe we made it this far - almost one full-year of Media Hacks. This will be the last Media Hacks for 2009, and in this episode we discuss the language issue (again, and hopefully for the last time), the changing face of the e-book, the speed of which we're getting new technology and how this year panned out. We've got

The Watering Down Of Quality

If everyone can do something (like create an online video), doesn't that mean that the overall quality of video production drops?

In fact, I was asked a similar question recently via email. The actual question was: "With the stellar rise of citizen journalist, do you think that there is a watering down of real quality journalism or can we all live happily together?" In fact, I would argue that the exact opposite is true. If more and more people can do something - like create a video - it...
