The New Face Of Facebook

It's funny how new things can sometimes feel old. And, in the same breath, it's one of the most ridiculous things that can happen to a business. That "thing" is following whatever new and shiny object is currently the mass-media darling when it comes to technology and new media.

As new as Facebook still is (the company was founded in 2004, but only started opening its online social networking doors to those without a university e-mail address in late 2006), there are now many people who...

The Hardest Part Of Social Media

Some people can't handle how much content there is out there. Others are scared to open up because of what people might say about their products and services. Then there are those who simply think all of this Social Media stuff is just a fad.

There are a million excuses as to why companies don't engage in these online channels, and the line starts behind the ROI (Return On Investment). In the end, every argument in the world is not going to change the fact that consumers have never been...

Gifts For Geeks

It wasn't too long ago that if you called someone a "geek," it was grounds for a good pounding. Now it's cooler to be Larry Page than Brad Pitt (and even Mr. Pitt was on the cover of Wired a few months back). "Geek" is a term of endearment. So how do you shop for the geek in your life?

ThinkGeek is a veritable Walmart of gizmos, gadgets and toys for the tech jockeys on your list. Where else can you get a T-shirt that says "What Happens in the Holodeck Stays in the Holodeck"? And no, it's...

Conversation Is Not Community

It might seem like an obvious statement, but many brands simply don't understand this one basic fact: conversation is not community.

Let's break that down: just because someone is talking about your brand (positively or negatively) it doesn't mean that they are a part of your community (or that they want to be a part of your community). To push that even further, even if someone has bought from you, loves your product and raves about it everywhere (both online and offline), it still doesn't ...

The Cluetrain Manifesto At 10 Years+ With David Weinberger

Episode #179 of Six Pixels of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to.

A couple of weeks back, I had the pleasure of attending Marketing Week. The closing keynote speaker for the Digital Day was none other than David Weinberger. Weinberger is one of four co-authors of the seminal Marketing and Business book, The Cluetrain Manifesto (which was recently released in a 10th Anniversary format). He is also the author of two other amazing books about...

Does Marketing Have A "Bruce Lee"?

Bruce Lee was (and still is) an amazingly inspirational person (and you don't have to like martial arts or combative sports to appreciate him).

Every other year, I make sure to take a re-read through the book, Tao of Jeet Kune Do, by Bruce Lee. Lee is part philosopher, part innovator and all intensity. This little documentary that I came across (hat-tip Tony Blauer) has some great interview segments where one could simply swap out the words "martial arts" and replace them with "marketing...

Thankful

It's a special day for some (for others, the day already happened). Regardless, Thanksgiving is a great holiday because it (hopefully) allows you to take one moment to remember what you have to be thankful for.

Here are just some of the things I am thankful for:

Family and friends (nothing ever tops that).

Health.

Connectivity (not just the Intertubes - but being connected to people like you).

Personal happiness, passion and drive (nothing happens without it).

Education and...

When Do You Sleep?

That is one of the top questions I get asked. Often. It's either that one, or "do you ever sleep?" Same question, different connotation.

My general response is, "I don't work hard, but I do work long." Meaning, I don't consider what I do "hard work," but with travel and my personal lifestyle, I have long (sometimes very long) days. That being said, when I first joined my other business partners at Twist Image, I did make a personal promise to myself that I would go to sleep when I was tired ...
