Embracing The New Business Of New Media

Last week, the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) wrapped up in Las Vegas. CES is the seminal annual event for highlighting the latest and greatest in terms of what kind of entertainment, media and technology will be making its way into our collective lives.

The event gives us a small peak into where our disposable incomes may be headed, and 2010's CES was no exception. The website/media portal CNET is a great source for aggregating and navigating the miles of convention...

Digital You

Using the digital channels to teach the digital channels... and using some TV too.

That's the calling card of a new TVO series and online Podcast called, Digital U. They are using these digital platforms (and traditional TV) to deliver video content in hopes of educating people about New Media, Social Media, Digital Marketing and all of the other wondrous stuff we chat about in spaces like this. In developing this series, I was asked to be interviewed. Following is 15 minutes of the...

The #1 Problem Most Brands Have

It's not about profit. It's not about customer service. It's not about inventory. It's about consistency.

Ask the best restaurants in the world and, hands down, they'll all say that their success is primarily based on how consistent they are in delivering great meals for every person in the dining room, every day, consistently... forever. The brands that master consistency win. Especially when that consistency happens on top of a product or service that people love (and will talk about).

The Great Race To The Middle

With everyone offering up their opinions and ideas, is there no fear that the end aggregated result will simply be something very mediocre?

This has been one of the prevailing thoughts when it comes to Wikipedia and the readability of the content. There are those who feel that as more and more of these articles get edited by more and more individuals, that the net result is a dry and boring piece of content that lacks style, flair and any sort of real heart. The same could be said for...

Media Hacks Podcast #23 Is Now Live

Episode #185 of Six Pixels of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to. It's also episode #23 of Media Hacks.

We have the whole gang present (with the exception of Chris Brogan who was too busy at CES - lucky guy!). Along with some interesting/new New Year announcements, we deep dive on the Nexus One (aka the Google Phone) which leads us into a deep conversation about data, information and the great race towards a mobile society. We also look at all of ...

The Local Radio Dilemma

Whether it's buying books, going to the movies or buying music, the Internet is being blamed for the death of every other media, including radio. It's a very misguided presumption.

The Internet is not killing any other media form. It needed to be said. The Internet is fragmenting audiences simply because it adds additional choices and options for the consumer. But, it's not just the Internet. When you can buy a 42-inch high definition plasma screen for under $800, you can rest assured that i...

Social Networking Circa 1750

Curious how ideas spread (or don't)?

This is what happens when you match the Old School with the New School: YouTube - Tracking 18th-century "social network" through letters.

What A Website Will Be... And Never Be

There are two schools of thought when it comes to marketing brands online and the presence they need.

Build a website that houses everything - all of your text, images, audio and video - in one, centralized, location.

Use the existing platforms and build your presence within their community (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc...).

Both have merit, and you can also do a little bit of both. For example you can house all of your branded content in your own website, and use the...

The Google Phone Is Really About This...

A computer that is in every person's hand that connects them to information and everyone else in the world.

Too many people think that the launch of the Nexus One (the Google phone) yesterday was Google's competitive move against Apple's iPhone or BlackBerry. It wasn't. Just take a look through the major business and technology newspaper columns, websites and Blogs, and you'll see charts comparing the Nexus One to the iPhone and BlackBerry ad nauseam. There's a lot more to this announcement ...

Remember: Marketing Is Art

Are you inspired to create the work that you were meant to create? Is it your art? Is Marketing art?

There's a video interview at the end of this Blog post that leads me to ask this question: is what you are doing the art you were meant to create? If not, why do it? Yes, it's a tough question to answer and yes, the answer or negation of this thought/question will include countless uses of the word, "but." In the end, it is spot on: whatever it is that you are doing for the majority of your w...
