CSI Basingstoke a real hit with the audience
CSI Basingstoke, where crime fiction met crime fact, held on Saturday 6 July at the Basingstoke Discovery Centre in Hampshire, England, was a big hit with the audience. The sell out event was attended by fifty crime fiction and CSI fans.
The event was modelled on the highly successful CSI Portsmouth, which I first organised in 2010. This year will be the fourth year of CSI Portsmouth, a one day event bringing crime authors and experts together for lively panel discussions on Saturday 2 November at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
CSI Basingstoke followed the same format as that of CSI Portsmouth except that it was smaller capacity audience and the Basingstoke event was a morning only panel. On the panel on the crime fiction side along with myself was Peter Lovesey who has won many major awards for his crime novels. His latest in the Detective Peter Diamond series is 'The Tooth Tattoo'.
We were joined on the expert side by Carolyn Lovell, Senior Manager, Hampshire Police Crime Scene Investigations and Jane Aston, Fingerprint Supervisor/Acting Bureau Trainer at Hampshire Police who both gave the audience a fascinating insight into their work. The panel was expertly chaired by Angela Hicken of Hampshire Library Service and the event was hosted by Basingstoke Discovery Centre.
The Hayling Island Bookshop provided a mobile book shop. Jane Aston was joined by her colleague, Heather Foster, and offered to take the delegates fingerprint and to press it into a keep sake key ring to take away - a very popular attraction.
My thanks to everyone for making the event so successful and enjoyable and to the audience for joining us.
The crime authors and experts for CSI Portsmouth 2013 are to be announced shortly and the event takes place this year on Saturday 2 November at the The Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard.

Unabridged audio book, DI Horton, Dead Man's Wharf, narrator gets great review
Gordon Griffin is the narrator of the unabridged audio books in the DI Andy Horton series . Gordon is the voice of DI Andy Horton and the other characters in the Horton novels and is currently recording Footsteps on the Shore. This will be followed by the seventh in the Horton series, A Killing Coast and the eighth, Death Lies Beneath.
The unabridged audio book Dead Man's Wharf, the fourth in the DI Horton series, has received a great review from Audio File Magazine.
"Narrator Gordon Griffin speaks with an educated British accent, differentiating each character in this mystery through a slight alteration in pitch and cadence. His pace is measured, and his tone is grave. This is not to criticize, however. One must not forget that the topic is murder.
Gordon Griffin's delivery also enhances the story's setting, the Solent area of the south coast of England, with its atmosphere of mist and the scent of the sea. As gruff Inspector Andy Horton uncovers fact after fact concerning the mysterious deaths at a nursing home, the scope of the crimes only seems to grow. Griffin makes us feel the pain and terror of hidden violence. It's a moving portrayal."
D.R.W. AudioFile Magazine 2013, Portland, Maine
Hailed by AudioFile Magazine as, ‘not simply a reader but the artist of the spoken word,’ Gordon Griffin has been an actor for over 40 years. He’s performed in everything from Shakespeare to rock musicals and such British favourites as The Likely Lads, When the Boat Comes in and Kavanagh QC. He’s also one of the people telling you to "Mind the Gap" on the London Underground! In addition to acting both on stage and screen he is a composer, lyricist and cabaret singer. For the past 20 years he’s also been involved in recording over 500 audio books, almost all are unabridged – that’s a lot of recording.
The DI Andy Horton novels are published by Severn House in the UK Commonwealth and the USA and the unabridged audio crime novels by Isis Publishing.

DI Andy Horton Mystery Number Ten, Death Surge, to be published in September 2013
I'm delighted that the tenth in the DI Andy Horton mystery crime series, Death Surge,is to be published in the UK and Commonwealth on 30 September 2013 by Severn House Publishers and in the USA in January 2014 when it will also be released as an e book.
Here is the blurb!
A telephone call from a frantic Sergeant Cantelli to say that his nephew, Johnnie Oslow, is missing cuts short Detective Inspector Horton’s sailing trip to France. Summoned back to the Isle of Wight, Horton learns that Johnnie has not shown up for racing during Cowes Week, as previously arranged. The investigation is ranked low priority by Horton’s boss, Detective Chief Inspector Lorraine Bliss, who like others believes Johnnie has probably gone off with a woman. But events take a very different turn when the charred remains of a body are discovered in one of the disused tunnels at the Hilsea Lines in Portsmouth. With the arrival of Detective Chief Superintendent Sawyer of the Intelligence Directorate and Agent Harriet Eames of Europol, what began as the hunt for a missing man becomes the search for a ruthless killer . . .
It will be available for pre order from bookshops and online. It will also be available on loan from UK and Commonwealth Libraries.

A map of DI Andy Horton's Patch
Some readers have asked for a map of DI Andy Horton's country to be included in the front of the novels. It sounds like a good idea, will have to sound my publisher out about this. Meanwhile I have posted a photograph of the area where the novels are set courtesy of Crown Copyright on my blog
Most of the action in the Horton novels takes place in Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight on the South Coast of England.
The novels are primarily set around Portsmouth Harbour, Langstone and Chichester Harbours and the Isle of Wight. There are now nine in the DI Andy Horton series. Undercurrent was published this year. I've also written two stand alone crime novels not in the Horton series: In Cold Daylight and In For The Kill, both of which as also set in the Solent area.
Hope you find the picture of the map on my blog and further information on there of interest.

Lovely audience at Test Villages U3A
On 5 June I gave a talk about my DI Andy Horton mystery crime novels set in the Solent area on the South Coast of England, to the Test Villages U3A group at a village called Longstock near Stockbridge in the heart of the Hampshire countryside.
It was a glorious sunny day and the audience were lovely. They asked lots of questions about my flawed and rugged detective, DI Andy Horton, and my life of crime, writing that is.
I've posted a couple of photos from the event here on Goodreads.
U3As are self-help, self-managed lifelong learning co-operatives for older people no longer in full time work, providing opportunities for their members to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups and to pursue learning not for qualifications, but for fun.
Next up is a talk to the Emsworth U3A on 21 June. I'm looking forward to it.

Back from a very enjoyable CrimeFest 2013
CrimeFest was buzzing. It was great to catch up with some of my fellow crime writers, meet lots of lovely crime fiction fans and meet up with my publisher, Severn House.
The panel session on Friday morning was well received by a lively audience and my In the Spotlight Session later the same morning where I talked about "The Perfect System for Writing a Crime Novel" was standing room only.
The panel session was chaired by Ann Cleeves and appearing with me were crime authors; J. C. Martin, Kate Ellis and Kerry Wilkinson. We discussed many aspects of crime writing and our novels, including why we chose to set them where we did, why we chose to feature cops, how we research our crime novels and who our favourite fictional detectives are.
Read full article on my website where there are also photographs and I've posted some here.
