Great Review from the States for the latest DI Andy Horton procedural crime novel, Footsteps on the Shore

I'm delighted that my latest DI Andy Horton, Footsteps on the Shore, published in the UK in January and in the USA this month (May) has been given a star rated excellent review in America by top American reviewer Booklist who has compared it, and my writing, to best selling crime authors in the USA Ed McBain and Joseph Wambaugh and in the UK to Peter Robinson and John Harvey.

Booklist, has heaped praise on the latest in the DI Andy Horton series claiming it to be ‘outstanding’ and ‘it deserves mention in the same breath as works in the upper echelons of both American procedurals (those by McBain or Joseph Wambaugh, for example)’

Ed McBain laid down the formula that defined the urban police novel and Wambaugh is a best selling American crime author who is also creator of Police Story, NBC-TV, 1973-1977 and The Blue Knight, NBC-TV, 1977.

The review from Booklist says, ‘Andy Horton is an especially good series hero, a likable fellow with plenty of street smarts and the requisite personal baggage – an abrasive supervisor and an antagonistic soon-to-be ex-wife ( like Harvey's Frank Elder). Procedural fans who haven’t already read Rowson should be encouraged to do so in the strongest possible terms.’ Booklist

I am obviously delighted by this review. It is very rewarding to get such a strong recommendation from a reputable reviewer like this in America. Thank you.

Procedural fans who haven’t already read Rowson should be encouraged to do so in the strongest possible terms.’

Set against the backdrop of the sea in the Solent area of England, Footsteps on the Shore, like the others in the DI Horton series, reflects the seedy side of the densely populated and harbour front city of Portsmouth.

Footsteps on the Shore
Friday the thirteenth begins badly for DI Andy Horton when he wakes to find his Harley has been vandalized and his boss, DCI Lorraine Bliss, has returned early from her secondment to HQ. Then, convicted murderer, Luke Felton, released on licence, is reported missing and a decomposed corpse is washed up in Portsmouth harbour. But before Horton can get a grip on either case, he’s called to a house where a woman he’d only met the day before has been brutally murdered. Is missing Luke Felton the prime suspect, or is it his body in the mud of the harbour? Horton is under pressure to get results, but things are about to get much worse for the beleaguered detective …

Undercurrent was published in the UK and Commonwealth by Severn House on 30 January 2013.

Translation rights to the Horton series have recently been sold to China where they are being published in 2013.

American Reviewer Booklist says, "Andy Horton is an especially good series hero, a likeable fellow with plenty of street smarts and the requisite personal baggage – an abrasive supervisor and an antagonistic soon-to-be ex-wife. Procedural fans who haven’t already read Rowson should be encouraged to do so in the strongest possible terms."

When naval historian Dr Douglas Spalding is found dead in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard, the Major Crime Team is adamant it is suicide. Detective Inspector Horton is not so sure. Then another body is found in similar circumstances and Horton is convinced they’re looking at murder; but not so his bosses. Angry and frustrated at the lack of investigation, Horton goes out on a limb to prove he’s right. Whichever way he turns, he finds the deaths have all the hallmarks of a cover up at the highest level, but who is behind it and why? Soon Horton begins to find disturbing similarities with his own private investigations into the disappearance of his mother thirty years ago. As he gets closer to the truth someone is determined to prevent it from ever coming out, even if means death.

Alll my crime and thriller novels are available in hardcover, paperback, as e books on Kindle, Nook and Kobo and some are available in Large Print and as Audio Books.

Footsteps on the Shore - DI Horton 6 - now released as an audio book

Footsteps on the Shore the sixth in the DI Andy Horton series has now been released as an unabridged audio book. It is published by Isis Publishing and read by Gordon Griffin who has also read the others in the DI Horton series.

Footsteps on the Shore is already available in Large Print and as an e book, on Kindle, Kobo and Nook and in paperback and hardcover published by Severn House.

Published in the UK, Commonwealth and America, Footsteps on the Shore has been highly acclaimed both in the UK and abroad. American reviewer Booklist says, ' It deserves mention in the same breath as works in the upper echelon of American procedurals (those by Ed McBain or Joseph Wambaugh for example) and their British counterparts, including the work of Peter Robinson and John Harvey. Procedural fans who haven’t already read Rowson should be encouraged to do so in the strongest possible terms.’

Dead Man's Wharf, the fourth in the DI Horton series also received a glowing review from Audio File Magazine in the USA.

"Narrator Gordon Griffin speaks with an educated British accent, differentiating each character in this mystery through a slight alteration in pitch and cadence. His pace is measured, and his tone is grave. This is not to criticize, however. One must not forget that the topic is murder.

Gordon Griffin's delivery also enhances the story's setting, the Solent area of the south coast of England, with its atmosphere of mist and the scent of the sea. As gruff Inspector Andy Horton uncovers fact after fact concerning the mysterious deaths at a nursing home, the scope of the crimes only seems to grow. Griffin makes us feel the pain and terror of hidden violence. It's a moving portrayal."

D.R.W. AudioFile Magazine 2013, Portland, Maine

The latest in the DI Horton series, Undercurrent, was published in hardcover in the UK, Commonwealth and USA this year.

A Killing Coast and Death Lies Beneath. will also be released as unabridged audio books later this year. They are already available in hardcover and as ebooks.
