The New Marine Mystery Crime Novel Published

This week sees the official publication of the new Marine Mystery crime novel featuring my flawed and rugged Portsmouth detective, Inspector Andy Horton.

Dead Man’s Wharf, which is published in hardcover, is the fourth in the marine mystery series. It is set against the backdrop of the Solent on the South Coast of England.

I'll be signing copies of Dead Man’s Wharf and others in the series at The Hayling Island Bookshop during Independent Booksellers Week on Saturday 20 June at 11am. Before then I am in Cornwall, Bristol and Dorset for book signings.

Christmas Greetings

As 2009 draws to a close I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to my success as a crime writer, not least the wonderful people who have bought my crime novels, or borrowed them from the libraries, and those who have been kind enough to tell me how much they have enjoyed reading or listening to them. Thank you so much.

I would certainly like to thank my publisher, Severn House, for their continued support and belief in me, so much so that they are publishing the new DI Andy Horton crime novel, ‘Blood on the Sand’ in February 2010 (UK) and the trade paperback of ‘Dead Man’s Wharf’ in the same month.I believe they are being published in the USA in April 2010.

I have met some interesting and lovely people during the year at my talks and book signings and I'd also like to say a big 'thank you' to all library staff both in the UK and the USA for their continued support. It is much appreciated.

At the risk of this ending up sounding like an Oscar Award acceptance speech I'd better sign off now with my sincere wishes to you for a merry Christmas, a happy holiday and a healthy, peaceful and prosperous 2010.

Great Review from the States for the latest DI Andy Horton procedural crime novel, Footsteps on the Shore

I'm delighted that my latest DI Andy Horton, Footsteps on the Shore, published in the UK in January and in the USA this month (May) has been given a star rated excellent review in America by top American reviewer Booklist who has compared it, and my writing, to best selling crime authors in the USA Ed McBain and Joseph Wambaugh and in the UK to Peter Robinson and John Harvey.

Booklist, has heaped praise on the latest in the DI Andy Horton series claiming it to be ‘outstanding’ and ‘it deserves mention in the same breath as works in the upper echelons of both American procedurals (those by McBain or Joseph Wambaugh, for example)’

Ed McBain laid down the formula that defined the urban police novel and Wambaugh is a best selling American crime author who is also creator of Police Story, NBC-TV, 1973-1977 and The Blue Knight, NBC-TV, 1977.

The review from Booklist says, ‘Andy Horton is an especially good series hero, a likable fellow with plenty of street smarts and the requisite personal baggage – an abrasive supervisor and an antagonistic soon-to-be ex-wife ( like Harvey's Frank Elder). Procedural fans who haven’t already read Rowson should be encouraged to do so in the strongest possible terms.’ Booklist

I am obviously delighted by this review. It is very rewarding to get such a strong recommendation from a reputable reviewer like this in America. Thank you.

Drugs and poisons on the morning panel at CSI Portsmouth where crime fiction meets crime fact

Over 130 people gathered at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard on a blustery day, punctuated by the occasional shower, on Saturday 2 November to listen to two panels of crime authors, crime experts and police debate crime fiction and crime fact. It was great to see so many people there and to welcome back those who had attended the previous CSI Portsmouth events.

CSI Portsmouth was first launched in 2010 from an idea I had about bringing crime fiction and fact together. I organise the event with Portsmouth City Council Library Service and the Hayling Island Bookshop. It is part of Portsmouth BookFest and is now an established fixture in the crime fiction festival calendar.

Along with the panel events also present throughout the day were the Hampshire Police Fingerprint Bureau team. Emma Bright and Heather Foster were on hand to offer delegates the opportunity to have their fingerprint taken and pressed into a keepsake key ring to take away.

There was a mock up crime scene, complete with a body ‘Victor’, provided by students from the forensic science course at South Downs College

And a forensic display provided by the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies, Portsmouth University on Entomology (maggots, flies) finger mark development (chemical treatments), trace evidence, and DNA. The Hayling Island Bookshop were also there with a selection of the participating crime authors books.

I opened the event by welcoming everyone to CSI Portsmouth with the announcement they were in for a treat, a prediction that proved justified as the day progressed, and by thanking the supporters and sponsors of CSI Portsmouth 2013, Bello Books, an imprint of Pan Macmillan, which brings lost classics back to life, and the National Museum of the Royal Navy for allowing us to use their superb venue.

Crime author Kerry Wilkinson and I debated the crime fiction side while crime experts Dr Alex Allan Forensic Toxicologist from Triple A Forensics and Mick Ellis, Hampshire Police Drug Expert talked about their experiences with drug related crime. I put the panel under the spotlight for an hour then it was the turn of the audience to grill them for half an hour. This was followed by a book signing and the chance for the audience to chat to the experts and crime authors on an individual basis.

The morning session closed at 12.30pm when delegates went off to enjoy their lunch in one of the cafes in the Historic Dockyard. The afternoon session began at 2pm. More about that in a later blog.

There is more information about CSI Portsmouth on my official website at http:www.rowmark.co.uk

You can follow CSI Portsmouth on Twitter and on Facebook.

CSI Portsmouth 2014 is on Saturday 8 November. Tickets go on sale in September 2014.
