For The Love Of…Holidays by Artemis Crow

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is marble-crow-logo.jpg

December tis the season to celebrate holidays with family and friends! Whether you observe Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, or Ōmisoka, there are many reasons to share love and joy!

So today, I want to share a little about two of the month’s holidays.

Hanukkah

The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. Hanukkah 2022 begins on the evening of Sunday, December 18 and ends on the evening of Monday, December 26.

These five elements are part of traditional Hanukkah celebrations.

1. Light the Menorah

The centerpiece of the Hanukkah celebration is the hanukkiah, a candelabra that holds nine candles. Eight candles symbolize the number of days that the Temple lantern blazed; the ninth, the shamash, is a helper candle used to light the others. Families light one candle on the first day, two on the second (and so on) after sundown during the eight days of Hanukkah while reciting prayers and singing songs.

2. Sing Songs

Hanukkah comes with traditional holiday songs sung around the glowing menorah. These celebrate everything from the glory of God and the ancient Temple of the Jews (Maoz Tzur) to the simplicity of a dreidel, as in “Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel/I made it out of clay/And when it’s dry and ready/Oh dreidel I shall play.”

3. Yummy Fried Treats

There’s nothing low-fat about Hanukkah—the traditional foods of the holiday are deep-fried, caloric, and delicious. In honor of the miracle of the oil at the center of Hanukkah—the story of the lamp in the Temple burning bright for eight days even though there was only enough fuel for one day—Jewish people eat fried foods like latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled doughnuts).

4. Spinning Tops

It’s customary to play with dreidels (spinning tops) during the holiday, even wager with chocolate coins on which side of the top will fall face up. Legend has it that during the Greek-Syrian dictatorship in ancient Israel, Jewish students got around the ban on reading the Torah by bringing spinning tops to study sessions so their oppressors would think they were playing. The Hebrew characters carved into the four sides of today’s dreidels are the first letters of “Ness Gadol Haya Po/Sham,” which roughly translates to “Great Miracle Happened Here/There” (depending on whether you’re in Israel or not).

5. Gold Coins

The tradition of handing out gelt (the Yiddish word for “money”) can be traced back to Jews in Medieval Europe, who connected the Hebrew word for education, hinnnukh, with Hanukkah. Parents would give their children gelt to present to their teachers, and in time, they gave their children gelt to praise them for their studies. The practice is also likely a nod to the fact that the only time Jews were historically free to mint their own coins in their own state was after the Maccabean revolt when Jewish kings governed the land around Jerusalem for over a century.

The coins distributed during Hanukkah—either real currency or chocolate-covered coins—are thus a symbol of Jewish independence.

Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of African-American culture from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day. It was created by activist Maulana Karenga, based on African harvest festival traditions from various parts of West and Southeast Africa. Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966.

Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of the principles, as follows:

Umoja  (Unity): To strive for and to maintain unity in the family and community. Kujichagulia  (Self-determination): To define and name ourselves, as well as to create and speak for ourselves. Ujima  (Collective work and responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems and to solve them together. Ujamaa  (Cooperative economics): To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together. Nia  (Purpose): To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness. Kuumba  (Creativity): To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it. Imani  (Faith): To believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

From me to all of you, have the happiest of holidays! See you all next year!

May your words flow freely,

Artemis

Remember the Season

I’m gonna keep this weeks’ blog brief because I’ve caught in one of the gazillion viruses going around and I felt absolutely miserable the last few days. Note to those reading, take care of you this season. There is a lot going around and it is not the time of year one wants to be sick.

Okay, now onto my main topic or ask for this week or even this 2023 year that is nearly upon us— look around you. Yes, this is the season of giving and there is so much need out there. It can be overwhelming so choose something or someone you are passionate about and try your best to pay it forward. It truly does make you feel good and you needn’t do it in a big way if you can’t afford it. Small gestures make all the difference too.

So that’s it, just do for others. These days, that seems harder and harder for folks to do, but I’ve come across so many folks in need of late. I truly feel blessed and am fortunate enough to give back in some ways but I always feel like I could and should do more so I’m spreading the word and reminding you all that Tis the Season of Giving.

Happy writing this week!

First Snow Paranormal-Scope

So it wasn’t so much, but it’s only the beginning. Things are changing in unpredictable ways so prepare!

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Elves know that talking about good ideas is intriguing, but acting on those inventions will impress. Be known as a person of action.

Taurus:
Mermaids are off the grid. It’s time to go offline and spend time with family and people you enjoy!

Gemini:
Pixies learn from the past and then flitter on. Learn from the past to be a stronger person. Some people are successfully doing this in therapy. Moving on is a freeing experience.

Cancer:
Vampires don’t usually form teams unless it’s important. Teamwork will be very satisfying this week.

Leo:
Werewolves hold trust to be sacred. You can’t trust everyone. People are not always what they seem to be. Depend on those reliable people close to your heart.

Virgo:
Shapeshifters are very creative! This is your time to indulge creative ambitions and just have fun.

Libra
Dragons are always on duty. Self-care and nurturing your talents are equally important. Make time for those things that nurture your mind and heart.

Scorpio:
Faeries are industrious this time of year, searching into the archives and learning new things. Enjoy a learning experience yourself. Study something you’ve always wanted to know about.

Sagittarius:
Gnomes are all about traditions. Find out more about your personal history and what it means. Keep a dream diary/sketchbook.

Capricorn:
Goblins are very focused on achieving their goals. They make lists and a plan. Do the same for what you want to achieve.

Aquarius:
The song of the siren can make you forget what’s important to you. Be wary of people babbling nonsense and invitations to invest in things too good to be true.

Pisces:
Werepuppies can be stressed out this time of the year. Plan some play dates with friends to relax.

Now for your invitation to a party!

Come and join us on Friday 16th for our Holiday Party!!!

12-8 pm in the I Love Romance Books! Group on Facebook!

New Release: EverNight By Susan Hanniford Crowley

It’s very exciting to have a new book published, especially if it’s in a series. EverNight is Book 2 in the Young Supernaturals of New York series.

Maeve and Mike are back and both seventeen. Maeve was the girl who lived in the cardboard box in an alley in Manhattan. Mike was the rich kid who fell in love in a New York minute. When he tried to follow Maeve, he was attacked by a savage vampire.

Now, well, their lives are different. They live in apartments in the Arnhem Society of New York and attend a very unusual school. Maeve loves Mike, but she needs to figure out where a human fits into a paranormal/supernatural community.

Something evil is going down in the city. There’s dark magic in the air, and it wants Maeve!

*

Some of the things I love about EverNight is that it is an expanded world. Maeve keeps meeting more fascinating people. I don’t want to spoil it for you but it’s fun and romantic.

For those that need to know more about Maeve and Mike or read them for the first time, visit Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BPF69JFM If you go further down the page there is an option to buy both EverWarm and EverNight

It has started snowing already. Time to charge up everything we need, put wood by the fireplace, and get any last-minute emergency provisions. Reading is a relaxing experience. I’m charging my tablet which has the Kindle app.

An Important Note: I will be joining an online party on the Facebook group-I Love Romance Books! on Friday, Dec. 16th, from 6-7 pm. Have no worries if you are late, as the contest will end the next day at noon (Eastern time) and I will post the winners. The other writers are planning the same thing. So if you arrive late, join the group and scroll. Don’t miss the fun!

Stay safe and well, my friends!

Vampires’ Dance Paranormal-Scope

It’s a bit cold for me, but vampires don’t feel the cold. May your celebrations during this season of joy be safe and filled with happy memories. This week I will have a surprise announcement!

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Vampires love to attend evening community events; such as concerts, nightclubs, town hall meetings, tree lightings, vigils, protests, and midnight hay rides. You might enjoy being more involved with your community.

Taurus:
Vampires always run into old friends. With their long lives, the odds are better. An old friend will be in your area, so don’t be surprised.

Gemini:
Some vampires made a killing in the market. Some live hand to fang as they say. Watch your expenses carefully.

Cancer:
Vampires love pets. It isn’t unusual seeing a vampire walking his dog at night. If you have pets, cherish them. If not, perhaps donate to a zoo or animal rescue.

Leo:
Vampires are often followed by demons from their past. Letting go of the past is important in order to move on.

Virgo:
Vampires sometimes have families/old friends and with the holidays come drama. It’s not a time to spring anything new on them. This would be the perfect time to ask for advice on a matter.

Libra
On certain occasions, vampires have been known to team up. Collaborating is key this week.

Scorpio:
Vampires know to pay attention when a new person comes into their lives. Watch for the opportunity to make new friends.

Sagittarius:
Vampires have witnessed how misunderstandings have caused great harm. Take care with your words. The stress of the holidays opens the door to miscommunications.

Capricorn:
Vampires have a keen understanding of strategy. It’s best not to always announce your plans. Keep your cards close and let your success unfold.

Aquarius:
Vampires appear to be lone wolves but most are not. Relationships are important and need to be nurtured. Open your eyes to the possibilities around you.

Pisces:
Vampires indulge their creativity and sense of fun. Do the same.

Enjoy life and be safe.

Good morning or good day! Today I thought I would start a running list of the things I love (not in the order of importance). I may say why. I may not. This is just to bring to the forefront the things I appreciate in life. It’s not, by all means, a complete list, since every day we are alive there is something new to enjoy.

What and who do I appreciate:

The postman – We have a box to put big things in and recently with all the rain it got rain in it. The other night our postman stood in the pouring rain with our packages (Christmas presents) to give them safely to us. Thank you, Sir!

Chick-fil-A waffle fries – I love fries but lately, I’ve been experiencing metal mouth (a side effect of chemo) and they all taste wrong, except the waffle fries which really taste like potato. Hat’s off to Chick-fil-A!

Independent bookstores – They support independent authors.

Family and friends!

My editor who is in crunch time right now getting ready to publish EverNight!

This is just a part of my list! What would you add?

For The Love Of…Post NaNoWriMo by Artemis Crow

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is marble-crow-logo.jpg

Yesterday spelled the end of National Novel Writing Month. Did you participate? I wanted to write the entire first draft of my next novel, Virgo’s Touch, but missed that goal due to getting Covid for the first time. Yep, my husband had a trip to Belgium and returned with chocolate and Covid.

Luckily, we both had mild cases and are now much better. It did make me slow down, but I can’t complain since I still managed to write 130,000 new words in 30 days. I’ll take that and run with it and be happy!

But now what? Especially for those who did NaNo? Well, some of you, like me, will need to keep writing to finish the book. From there, I will turn right around, probably on January 2nd, and start editing, because I have a production schedule I want to keep up. When you have a 26-book series planned, you can’t afford to take off long stretches of time.

That schedule doesn’t include the offshoot trilogy I have planned plus the middle grade ideas and graphic novels I want to create. So I will continue pushing forward to finish, edit, then release Virgo before starting book 13, The Fades, my crone army book.

Sound like a lot? Sure, it is, but now that I’ve discovered my passion for writing, I can’t stop, and I don’t want to.

2023 will prove to be a busy year with the release of two Zodiac Assassin books, the third collection of ZA books, two short stories in anthologies, and the planning of ZA books 14 and 15. Does that make my eyes roll around in my head? Oh, yes. Am I thrilled to be able to spend my time expanding this world I created? Absolutely.

If you did write for NaNo, you know what you need to do next. For some of you, it’s to keep writing until the draft is done, for others it’s time to edit, for some it’s time to take a break. No matter what the next days and weeks look like, follow your heart, and congratulate yourself for writing new words, no matter if it was for NaNo or not.

Every word written is a word of progress. Keep moving forward, keep writing your stories, keep  sharing your particular vision of the world. We need art, more now than ever before!

May your words flow freely,

Artemis

Move Forward

It is no secret that I am an optimist. I’ve often said so in my blogs. Even still, I’ve written and spoken about how difficult the last two to three years have been for so many people. The inflation of late and the doom and gloom forecast of our economy and therefore markets can really make people depressed. So depressed they grasp for anything to give them an explanation, regardless of whether or not that is the right explanation.

Because of my day job, I spend a lot of time talking about all of this and I’ve come to realize that much of it has to do with how we each cope with life’s difficulties. Sure I’m an optimist so I do spend a lot of time surrounding myself with the positive— uplifting music, motivational speeches from those who have seen life’s ugly moments. I don’t hide from the truth and I’m not unaware of the turmoil in the world, but what use is it for me to panic and how do I help others if I’m busy wallowing.

Nothing lasts forever. Time has shown that consistently and we aren’t going to change that. We will move past pandemics and recessions and we will overcome new challenges that lie ahead. Will it all happen when we want? Not likely. But over time, we may see that is for the better.

Happy writing this week!

When Darkness Falls Paranormal-Scope

It’s 5 P.M. and already darkness has fallen. It’s like a signal to quickly get every daylight task done. For some, it means a party. For others, it means getting cozy at home. What does the early night mean to you?

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
The chupacabra stands on tall goat-like legs and has a terrifying visage as it feasts on livestock and wild animals. Spend some time rejuvenating at home where you feel safe, secure, and relaxed.

Taurus:
The oldest vampires on Earth have seen it all. They are great listeners. Some matters have been bothering you and you would benefit from talking to an older person you respect.

Gemini:
Amarok is a huge wolf that feasts on hunters and cattle in Greenland, Alaska, and Canada. It’s only seen at night. This is the time to make wise decisions in spending.

Cancer:
Beto Beto-san is a ghost from Japan that enjoys walking behind people. It cannot be seen. It enjoys making people nervous. You aren’t thinking clearly about new issues. Be sure to get your facts straight before making life decisions.

Leo:
Bigfoot is shy and prefers solitude. Are you shy too? Don’t be. Important people in your life need to know you love them.

Virgo:
Ghouls are shapeshifting demons that hang out around cemeteries and ruins. They eat human flesh. When making decisions, talk to those you trust. Reconsider visiting haunted places at this time.

Libra
Hob is a kind-hearted goblin that helps with household chores. You may find you need a collaborator at work or someone to help you with a project. Don’t be afraid to ask.

Scorpio:
The Kraken is safely asleep in the depths of the ocean at this time. Now is the time to form bonds with others and deepen current relationships.

Sagittarius:
The Loch Ness Monster will pose on occasion for photos. Still, it’s a shy creature and the wrong word or a sneeze will send it hiding below. People are extra sensitive right now, so speak with kindness.

Capricorn:
Zombies are roaming and ready to feed on human brains. Keep your future plans and ambitions under wraps. There are competitors out there that do not want you to succeed.

Aquarius:
Werewolves are ruled by two things: the moon and the pack. They know that packs are enormously important to their group’s well-being. Plan an event for your pack.

Pisces:
Dragons enjoy flying in the night sky. It relieves stress on the heart. Do things you enjoy to get the most fun out of the holidays.

Enjoy life and be safe.

This particular November has been very hard with illness and a cold that seems to blow through you. These are the times when you learn to rescue yourself.

I have said many times that you are important, and you are. A single person can make a difference. It is an odd thing that sometimes what a person does outlives him.

Vincent Van Gogh did sell some of his work during his lifetime but not enough to escape death in poverty. Some of his friends were already famous, but he was unknown. Today he is considered one of the most famous and beloved artists in the world.

Emily Dickinson wrote for herself. Only a few of her poems were read by others. Emily struggled to force those few into the accepted structure for poetry at that time. She even left wishes for her remaining work to be destroyed. But the family member that read them couldn’t bear to do that. 1,800 of her amazing poems exists today.

Galileo Galilei is the father of physics and invented the telescope. His concepts about our solar system were revolutionary for his time but they went against the accepted religious beliefs so his life was more than troubled. The Inquisition found him guilty of heresy. He had to recant his scientific findings and spent the last years of his life under house arrest. What do you do when that happens? Write down everything you know, of course. He persisted and his work survived him.

Leonard Cohen wrote and sang many songs but the one that everyone knows is “Hallelujah.” Other singers have covered it but most people remember the version Jeff Buckley sang. Jeff had a multi-octave vocal range and did such a stirring performance of the song, that other singers wanted to sing it too.

I could go on about all the people who have done great work during their lifetimes that were relatively unknown to the great populace.

As we go through our daily lives, we don’t know what we’ll do, say, discover, or inspire in someone else a deed that will make a difference to the whole world. We just live our lives. That’s what makes each one of us important.

I know during this bleak time toward the coming winter, it’s tough emotionally. I’m posting these numbers to use if you need them or if someone else does.

The 988 Lifeline

“988 is now active across the United States. This new, shorter phone number will make it easier for people to remember and access mental health crisis services. (Please note, the previous 1-800-273-TALK (8255) number will continue to function indefinitely.)” You can call, text, or chat 988.
Their website is: https://988lifeline.org

Life Tools: Inspire Yourself and/or Inspire OthersEncourage a person who is doing a great job. Compliments are like a hug to the heart. Indulge in your favorite activity and join an organization that does that activity too. Never compare yourself to someone else. Henry David Thoreau said, “Life isn’t about finding yourself; it’s about creating yourself. So live the life you imagined.”

This is a thought for all of us when faced with darkness!

“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” — Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

Truly,
