Best Summer Reads of…1918? By Ripley Proserpina

When trying to decide what to write for this week’s blog, I considered making a list of summer reads. You know—books I can’t wait to read. But then I got to thinking, what were people reading a hundred years ago? Wouldn’t it be fun if this summer, I read some of the books published in 1918?

I’m a bit of a history nerd (actually- I’m a huge history nerd, but whatever, I own it) and 1918 was a big year in world history. The War to End All Wars, World War I, was coming to a close, but millions of young men had died. An entire generation was wiped out.

So, what sorts of books were people reading? Were they seeking escape from this tragic reality? Were they looking for answers why

The answer seems to be—yes. They were doing all of those things. Take a look.

Greatheart by Ethel M. Dell… It’s a love triangle! We’re talking… the handsome rich dude, and his younger, slightly short brother who walks with a limp. According to one reviewer, “her stories (are) much too enjoyable to quibble about the abundance of adjectives.”

Twenty-Three and a Half Hours’ Leave by Mary Roberts Rinehart

This historical romance/war fiction is about a young soldier on leave from WWI and is written by the first woman war correspondent on the Belgian front!

The Return of the Soldier by Rebecca West

This is the story about a young captain who returns home to his wife and family shellshocked (what we now call PTSD). English lord. Amnesia. A secret love. Sounds promising!

And the last one: The Marne by Edith Wharton. I put this one in because I adore Edith Wharton. No one writes a better rip-your-heart-out romance than her. This short story is about a rich American who is touring France when the war breaks out.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle all these books. For romances, they seem pretty heavy, but 1918 was a year of heavy things (from https://www.cleveland.com)…

President Woodrow Wilson’s Fourteen Points of Peace are presented. Also this year: Wilson would become the first president to travel to Europe while serving as president, when he attended the Versailles Peace Conference in France.

The first case of Spanish flu in the United States is declared in Kansas; 675,000 Americans would die from the pandemic.

The year saw the armistice signed, signaling an end to the First World War, and the formation of Yugoslavia.

Tsar Nicholas, his wife and their five children are assassinated in Russia, ending the reign of the imperial family.

On April 20, the Red Baron of Germany (Manfred von Richthofen) notches his 80th kill as a fighter pilot. He would die the next day.

A Passionate Read for a Hot Summer Night

Sometimes you meet a guy that thinks he’s not good enough for you, that there must be someone better out there for you.  Donovan Dupre loves Vampire Princess Noblesse Vander Meer. What’s the problem besides he’s human?

Excerpt:

For the second night in a row, Noblesse slept in the arms of Donovan Dupre.

Inside her dream, she screamed.

“Noble, wake up. Noble, you’re having a nightmare again.” He gently shook her.

Noblesse blinked and stared at him, confused for several moments. “Donovan,” she said half-in surprise, then hugged him for all she was worth.

“What happened, Sha? Last night you wouldn’t tell me, but tonight, please, you must.”

Biting her lower lip, she huffed. It was a habit she had tried to stop, because it revealed her feelings too well. Donovan, with that slight Cajun accent rolling off his tongue, made her feel safe and the floodgates opened.

“It’s always the same. I see and hear everything so loud, every word and sound as I stood with them and screamed. It was July 17, 1789 all over again. I was with the patriots waiting outside the Bastille. They refused to release their prisoners, and we stormed the prison with all we had. Gun and cannon fire struck us. Hundreds of tiny stars of light hit me and burned. I fell.

“At that very moment, Max walked through the mob to carry me away. He said he walked a distance to find a house both empty and far enough not to be fired upon. My heart could barely beat. I remember him saying, ‘I don’t want to hurt you. I want to give you another chance, my brave one, my noble one.’ The sky must have turned black. I couldn’t breathe. His fangs sank into my neck, but death was already there to claim me. I did not understand him but asked God for forgiveness. I died.”

Donovan frowned. “I remember you telling me this story before. Why is it suddenly so terrifying?”

“I saw something I’ve never seen before. When Max was carrying me, when life was swimming around me, we passed a doorway where a man concealed himself in a black cape.”

“Who was it?”

“I don’t know. His face was covered. I don’t remember seeing him there. Could this be a restored memory?”

“Sha, I don’t know.” He breathed into her ear.

Noble hugged him but couldn’t stop trembling.

“It’s okay.” He held her tightly against him and rubbed her back. His calm melted into her, and the fear subsided.

Donovan smiled. “There you are, Noble. You know what I think? It’s two in the afternoon. It would do us good to leave here and get a pizza. I’m starving.”

She laughed. “You’re always starving.”

“I’ll even eat that vampire special pizza. I don’t care. You need a change from being here.” He sat up and pulled her to go with him.

“Donovan, please, we can’t go just yet.” She gently drew him toward her. “I want to do an experiment of sorts. I was wondering if . . .”

Before she could answer, Donovan possessed her lips. He was strong for a human. His firm passionate kiss left her quivering all over, wanting more. Heat spread throughout her every part. She rubbed against him. He moaned, pulling her closer, becoming her blanket and enveloping her with his delicious fire.

Instead of ending the kiss, he lingered with small nibbles at her mouth. Coaxing her lips apart with his tongue, demanding entrance, Donovan did the unspeakable. He stroked her fangs with his tongue.

Noble whimpered into his mouth and writhed beneath him. No man ever made her feel this way. She ran her fingers through his thick salt and pepper hair framing his handsome features. He closed his eyes when he kissed. She closed hers and found every sensation intensified.

Her body ached for him, only him. In short gasps, she whispered, “Donovan, I need you. I wanted you when we danced at Max and Evie’s wedding, and I want you now.”

Author Iuliana Foos & Romanian Inspiration by Stacy Hoff

Hello Passionate Readers! Today I have author Iuliana Foos telling us about her new release—Bloodline Origins!

Hello, and thank you for hosting me today.

I am sure that every author out there, at some point, heard the question: Where do you get your ideas from?

We are all different, and we get inspired by various things from personal experiences, to a fleeting image, or a sound that stays with us. I am also busy when I sleep and have countless dreams (each weirder than the other), a never-ending source of inspiration.

The first idea for ‘Bloodline’ trilogy sparked in my mind over thirty years ago. I was a teenager, visiting Dracula’s Castle, back home, in Romania (yes, I was born and raised in the homeland of vampires).

Once I got over the cold stone walls, dark corridors and dingy rooms, my imagination went in overdrive. It was the first time I started to speculate on how the world would be if vampires were real and lived among us.

Just like humans, I imagined my vampires to be good and bad, driven by passion and hate, guided by revenge or love.

I never believed in curses or undead, but I had always been fascinated with life beyond our blue planet, with the existence of another dimension, with creatures like dragons, elves and even shifters.

The story in ‘Bloodline’ trilogy is a mix or everything, from romance to adventure, suspense and science-fiction.

‘Bloodline Origins’, the first book in the series is a sweet romance with some tension. I kept it clean, but there is a possibility to have your heart skipping a beat or two at times.

Back Cover Blurb:

Determined to turn her fantasy into reality, Ana starts her journey to become a vampire. Along the way, she learns the truth about their secret society, discovers her prestigious bloodline and falls in love.

Not all vampires are accepting of humans and war looms in the shadows. An ancient tome reveals the vampires’ alien descent and sparks war.

An army bent on eradicating her coven’s existence threatens her new world. Survival or annihilation will be in Ana’s hands.

Author Bio:

Born and raised in Bucharest, Romania, Iuliana Foos currently lives with her husband in San Antonio, Texas.

When she doesn’t daydream or write, she enjoys drinking copious amounts of coffee and playing online multi-player games, hoping one day to have a white sanded beach as her backyard.

Becoming a traditionally published author has been a life-long dream turned reality.

What to do With Turmoil?

Turmoil has been the theme of late. In 1991, Rodney King was quoted as saying, “Can’t we all get along?” While the question has been mimicked or used in skits, it was a valid then, it was valid before and it is valid today. It was a question to ask in the context of his situation but beyond that, I look around and see so much turmoil and chaos everywhere.

As I’ve mentioned before, I work in the financial industry during the day and while I’m loathe to admit it, this industry doesn’t have the most stellar of reputations when it comes to doing what is right for others. Quite the opposite in fact—the industry is labeled as greedy and unfair in the treatment of clients. I don’t think a week goes by when I don’t talk to some person who is been scammed or victimized in some way by those out to make money off of others.

Beyond this, one just has to turn on the television to see more chaos and turmoil—Syria has been ongoing for a while and although it ebbs and flows in the media, nothing is resolved. Trade wars on the domestic and international fronts, geopolitical turmoil in European countries. My husband is from Nicaragua and every night we are hearing tidbits about the student uprising there and how many young people are being murdered. As you digest it, it really can be very sad and overwhelming and that’s coming from someone who is pretty positive in their outlook (or at least I believe I am).

I honestly am not sure how to approach everything. My way of helping lies through lending a hand where I can through volunteer work, donating when I can afford to, and making others aware of what is going on (at least to the degree I am aware and I realize I miss plenty). Beyond that, I am grateful every day for what I have.

A world without turmoil, may not be possible, but I sincerely believe the day that we stop trying to calm the “fire” and turn the tide, is the day that we cease to be human.

Good luck writing and may your words inspire others this week.

Under Prepared for Romancing The Capitol by Mandy Rosko

I went to the Ottawa Romance Writer’s June Social on Sunday, and it was great. I got to catch up on the whole Cocky Gate thing, and talk to Eve about a couple of things.

One being that my pre-order page had an error on it. Pretty sure I fixed it, but my issue was that people who were trying to pre-order books could only pick one or two things at a time and the form wouldn’t let them choose anymore than that. Got that fixed

Flying Paranormal-Scope

Blossoms abound and fill the air with an enchanting fragrance. At night, the scent soothes on cooler winds.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

The week for:

Aries:

The Flying Purple People Eater is in your neighborhood. It’s time to get cozy at home and enjoy the company of loved ones.

Taurus:

The Harpy passes over your home. You are feeling charitable toward the less fortunate. Change is also coming your way. Keep your eyes open.

Gemini:

A ghost flutters by your window. The morning will bring a new light on everything for you. Opportunities you didn’t see before will become clearer this week.

Cancer:

Mothra has landed nearby. Take outings to nearby attractions. Eat out and enjoy yourself.

Leo:

One story tells that the crow brought fire to early man. New career opportunities are headed your way. Don’t get fired up until you investigate them.

Virgo:

Bats eat harmful bugs in gardens. Someone you least expects admires you.

Libra:

A vampire walks down the street in a new suit. He doesn’t need to fly unless necessary. There are a lot of optional things in your life. Revamping your wardrobe is one of them.

Scorpio:

A wereowl sits in a trees and hoots at you. Wisdom on certain matters eludes you. Persevere and you will come out on top.

Sagittarius:

Werebutterflies alight gently on flowers before eating all the bugs around. Keep positive and you will find trouble giving you a wide berth this week.

An Amazing Opening Night!

Broadway, turn your eyes to the small city of Willimantic, Connecticut, for The Windham Theatre Guild in the Burton Leavitt Theater shines oh, so bright!

Last night I attended opening night of To Kill A Mockingbird and spent the entire time entranced by the actors, as they wove magic in living their story. The stage adaptation by Christopher Sergel is based upon the novel by Harper Lee. This production was produced by Martha Funderburk and directed by Jill Zarcone.

There is a moment in theatre where the actors cease to be performers, where the audience feels they are watching lives. They laugh, cry, and feel that they have been part of something bigger. Last night, the brilliance of the cast of To Kill A Mockingbird shone through in their portrayal of racial injustice in Maycomb, Georgia in 1935. The story is witnessed primarily through the eyes of the children of Attorney Atticus Finch portrayed masterfully by Mark O’Donnell. Scout Finch (Anjelica Mendoza), her brother Jem (Matt Belden), and their friend Dill Harris (Spencer Slayton) were a tour de force of innocence trying to make sense of the horrific events affecting their lives. They made me cry.

While the entire cast was at the top of their game for the show, giving so much that together they created a time and place that engulfed the audience in their experience, certain actors were exemplary. Bravos also go to Sunny Kirkham as Maudie Atkinson, Mike Scott as Tom Robinson, Mark Dodd as Sheriff Heck Tate, Abigail Donaghy as Mayella Ewell, Ken Noll as Bob Ewell, and Nick Luberto as Boo Radley.

Congratulations go to cast, crew, director and producer for creating an amazing and memorable theatre experience that I will long remember.

Fortunately for the public, this was only opening night. Visit http://www.windhamtheatreguild.org/ for dates, times, and tickets. For a great night at the theatre, go to To Kill A Mockingbird presented by The Windham Theatre Guild.

What Writers Can Learn From Artists About The Creative Process by Stacy Hoff

Above picture: “Head” by Philip Guston (MoMA)

I visited New York City not too long ago. I traveled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). I did more than simply view the magnificent art—I learned from it. Not as an artist, but as a writer.

The timing for my museum trip was lucky. I caught the last few days of the Met’s special exhibit on Michelangelo. While I’ve been lucky enough to see many of Michelangelo’s finished pieces during a trip I once took to Europe, I have never before seen any of his draft work. Seeing his ideas in raw form let me know that even one of the greatest artists of all time still had to go through a “rough draft” stage.

[image error]       [image error]

Above pictures: (left) Michelangelo’s “Study for the Head of the Cumaean Sibyl on the Sistine Ceiling” (right) Michelaneglo’s finished “Head of the Cumaean Sibyl”

What did this mean to me? That it’s okay for me to spend time “sketching out” my ideas. That my “rough” stages can eventually be smoothed out to final form. That the “trial and err” stage can lead to something beautiful.

Picture above: eye sketches from a student of Michelangelo, including one sketch by the Master himself.

Michelangelo understood that artists need more than talent—they need encouragement. One of the most fascinating pieces in the Met’s exhibit was a collection of eye sketches (above) drawn by one of his students. Michelangelo later added an eye to this page as a demonstration of proper technique.  If you look at the upper left hand side of the above photo, you’ll see Michelangelo’s handwritten note to his frustrated student, counseling him to be more patient.

Words of advice from the Master. Words that I must master myself.
