Simple, Hearty White Chili

TPW_2445I love white chili. And just like regular chili, there are as many incarnations as there are grains of sand in all the beaches of the world. Some white chili is soupy and creamy, with chunks of chickens and beans. Some white chili is vegetarian, without an ounce of chicken in sight. Other white chili, like the one I make, is more of a bean-centered delight—simple, warm, hearty, and filling, with plenty of flavor to spare.

But here's what I do. I make "simple, hearty white chili." Then I...

Four Warm and Cozy Soups

soups2This weekend, for me, is a time to catch up.

To wash people's jeans, socks, and underwear.

To haul off the last of our Christmas trash.

To write and cook and bake and cook and cook and cook and cook.

And to stay warm: at this very moment, it's eleven degrees outside. Even my kidneys are cold.

Part of the "staying warm" plan involves ingesting a big bowl of homemade soup. Here are four of my very favorites—my cold kidneys love them and it's hard for me to choose a favorite. I'm making one of ...

Phyllo Mushroom Bundles

TPW_2191I first made these when I was living alone in Los Angeles.

I can't believe I ever lived alone. In Los Angeles. By myself. One person.

One person's groceries.

One person's laundry.

One set of sheets.

Three towels.

1/2 gallon of milk.

1 roll of paper towels every eight months.

It blows my mind. What did I do with my time?

Anyway, I remember the night very well. My ex, I'll call him "J" (though anyone who's read this knows darn good and well what his name is), was down in Orange County w...

Tasty Appetizers!

I'm making a frilly, silly little New Year's Eve recipe right now. My kitchen is a mess, smells good, and is a mess. (Wait…did I mention my kitchen's a mess?)

I'll post the recipe as soon as it's ready. Meanwhile, here are some delicious appetizer/canape recipes I've found—all brought to you by the talented members of Tasty Kitchen. You can click on each recipe photo or title to get the printable and go shopping!

I'm drooling over these.

Delicious Cheddar Puffs

TPW_4282My mom made these puffs for a cocktail party she threw back in the seventies. Back when Danskin trousers and brown leather clogs ruled the day.

I loved these then, when I grabbed a stash and ran up to my bedroom and ate them by myself to the sweet, mellow voice of Helen Reddy. And I still love them now.

I love everything that comes out of my mom's recipe binder.

One thing about these puffs: it's one of the few situations in which I highly recommend using a very good, high quality, crusty ...

New Year's Eve Party Ideas

newyearsmallMarlboro Man and I are having a handful of people over to the Lodge for New Year's Eve because, well, let's face it: they're vagrant relatives and we feel really sorry for them. We figure if you can't welcome vagrant family members into your home on New Year's Eve, when can you?

But January 1 at noon? They're OUTTA here, man! I have a hard enough time feeding my two sons. They'll eat you out of house and home, let me tell you.

All this week I'll be posting new recipes for New Year's Eve...

Fancy Macaroni

TPW_1139I'm not going to say much.

Just this:

Make this sometime over the holidays. Serve it on Christmas Eve with your roast beef. Serve it the day after Christmas with a big Caesar salad. Eat it straight out of the pan after you've wrapped your last gift at 11:47 on Christmas Eve.

It's Fancy Macaroni.

You want it in your life.

TPW_1025Start with two medium onions.

TPW_1028Cut them in half from root to tip, then lop off the tops.

TPW_1032Then peel off the outer layer and slice the onions into pretty thin...

The Eggberts Sunriser

TPW_0900There was (and is, still) a restaurant in my hometown called Eggberts.

Eggberts opened when I was a pre-teen, I think, with a maximum of eight booths and a few seats at the bar, which was about two feet away from all the cooking. That was my favorite place to sit as a twelve-year-old, as I got to watch all the eggs being cracked, all the waffle batter being spooned into the waffle irons, all the gravy being ladled onto the biscuits. It was such a magical, wonderful place.

As I headed into...

Because it's December 17

Because it's December 17…

Because I haven't bought a single Christmas gift…

Because I don't dare order anything online at this point because the UPS and the FedEx and the DHL and the Pony Express guys don't seem to like coming to my house, so they'll drop off my packages at pretty much any Drummond within a fifty mile radius, and sometimes I don't track them all down until Valentine's Day….

Because I'm home from my book trip…

Because Charlie needs a bath…like, totally…

And because I love y...
