Downton Abbey Season 4 Ep 2

Or… Edith’s getting all the good clothes!

Just look at Edith’s stunning fashions this season. She’s killing it. The modern world is good for Lady Edith. Now if only she wasn’t headed for almost certain heartache with a married man who thinks becoming a German citizen to get a divorce will be a good idea. Oh, Edith.

In other developments, well done Joanna Froggatt! A terrible scene for Anna, but beautifully acted. I won’t go on in case you haven’t watched yet. But I am glad they cleared something up for me. I’d forgotten that Thomas was promoted to Under Butler, which is why they are now calling him Barrow. And not just out of convenience because of Tom Branson. Aha. Thanks, DA.   Lady-Edith-e1389462665184images-30article-0-1BC343E0000005DC-656_306x474 article-0-1B8EA611000005DC-394_634x625

Downton Abbey Season 4 Ep 1 (Spoilers)

They’re back!

Clearly, Mary starts out lost in grief. The loss of O’Brien stuns an apparently fragile Cora. And Edith is coming across as the strong, capable sister instead of the sad sack. Yay, Edith! She’s my favorite. The scene between Isobel and Edith, “you’re a grandmother” was well-played, very touching.

Thomas Barrow, starting the season as a hero? I loved his standing up to the nanny and tenderness for the children. Maybe he’s not all that bad. Why is Cora suddenly referring to Thomas as Barrow? Has he risen in the ranks more than I realized? I thought he was still a footman. Is it so that we can call Branson the more familiar Thomas without confusion?

My son happened to be watching with me when Daisy came into the kitchen. He said, “Is that Kristen Stewart?” And the she smiled. “Oh, no, it can’t be. She’s making a facial expression, and it’s a genuine-looking smile.” Ha!

Robert has a decidedly unfatherly need to keep Mary in grief and out of Downton’s business. I’m so glad Branson is looking out for Mary’s interest while she is failing to watch out for herself. Enlisting Carson’s help to drag Mary out of her grief was a great idea. At least someone’s doing something besides tiptoeing around her.

Far too long before we got to Dowager Countess Violet! “It’s a grandmother’s job to interfere.” My grandma had that one down.

Why does Mrs. Hughes care about Carson’s old associate Grigg? Didn’t he end up in the workhouse for trying to blackmail Carson and the Granthams in the first place? Or was that just the beginning of Grigg’s downfall? Must we have another character to care about?

Aha, Mary did not handle Carson’s well-meaning interference well at all. But I’m so glad he didn’t let her cow him.

Ah, more Violet goodness. The only one to be mindful of the servants watching after Mary’s dinner outburst, and then the one to finally go to her and say the right words. And with an “I love you.” Emotion! Tears! And finally, a “duh” moment for Mary. “You want me to choose life?” Um… yeah.

Also a good scene between Molesely and his father. Wisdom from an old man who has worked hard and learned lessons. But how could the family let Molesely go? Certainly there’s work enough at Downton?

Oh, drunk Ivy! And then interfering Isobel, talking to Carson about Grigg. I suppose Isobel just needed a project to get her going again.

Cora clearly needs more supervision than Rose in making big decisions. When did Cora become so dim-witted? Hiring Edna, without speaking to Mrs. Hughes first? Oh dear.

Edith and her fellow, what to make of that? I love her having an interest and some happiness, but she might be taking on too much. But that dress! Edith finally gets the good clothes! This whole German citizen plan sounds sketchy. I want her to be happy, but I want her to run.

I can’t get into more Daisy drama. I want sweet Daisy to be happy but she’s always hoping after the wrong man. I love that Patmore tried to give Daisy a smile. But Jimmy and Alfred both can’t have Ivy. One of them will come around?

At least Cora stood up to Nanny West and sent her packing. Thank goodness.

It seems a little late for Robert to be concerned about Edith and “that publisher.”

Finally, Mary begins to come around. Lovely scene with her apology to Carson. And then huzzah to her for making the business luncheon.

Mrs. Hughes referring to Edna as Miss Braithwaite? As a lady’s maid, she would be referred to as Mrs. regardless of her marital status. According to my research. Which could be wrong. I would like to know.

Molesley’s change of circumstances is really disturbing to me. All the care from Mrs. Hughes and Isobel Crawley for Grigg, and yet Molesely is working hard labor on the streets? Why couldn’t Isobel keep him on as butler if she’s such a bleeding heart?

Not enough of Anna and Bates, though perhaps I’m glad of it as long as they’re happy and drama free. I know the head housemaid would take care of the girls in the house, but now that those girls are women? And Mary being a mistress of the household? Are they in need of another lady’s maid? One for Mary?

Rose is going to be trouble.

I have a bad feeling for Edith. She seems entirely too certain that her family will welcome and accept her married lover.

Of course Carson came around and did the right thing to see Griggs off. I could have done without the whole Grigg storyline. Too many characters, too many storylines, not enough focus on the ones we love. I hope it was just because there were too many threads to keep up with in the first episode. What did you think?

Happy 2014!

I can’t believe it’s already here! Today, staying in with family to celebrate with our traditional New Year’s Day dinner, a tradition from my maternal grandmother’s family. Pork roast, dumplings, and sauerkraut all smothered in molasses (for luck) with carrots, mashed potatoes, and snowflake rolls. It sounds odd, yes, but it’s one of my favorite family traditions. If you’ve never had molasses on sauerkraut, give it a shot. Yum!

Wishing you all a safe, healthy, prosperous, and happy 2014.

Cheers to you!
