A lovely session at Start-o-nomics 2015, Delhi.

So I have just got back from Delhi, where I had been invited as one of the main speakers, at Start-o-nomics 2015, which was a start-up and an internship fair organised by the  students of the Economics Department of Dyal Singh college, Delhi.

The experience was fabulous--easily one of the best I have had, where I have been invited to speak. (and I have spoken at IITs, IIMs and corporates like KPMG, Infosys, Accenture and many more). Right from the mail where they invited me,  to the last minute detailed itinerary they planned for me, to the smart young lad who came to pick me up at the airport, to the warm welcome I got---all of it , I would say it was impeccable. They were so well organized in terms of planning, arrangements at the venue and the publicity both before and after the events.

I got a standing ovation, as soon as I went up on stage! I spoke about my journey from an unknown blogger to one of India's highest selling authors, and also talked about 4 things that helped me and 2 essential thins that you have to do, if you want to be a writer.

The reception that my talk  got was exceptional. I share with you some pictures, which would give you a good idea about it all.
The packed auditorium. There were students from other colleges in Delhi as well.

Giving the talk.

The head of the Economics department giving me a token of appreciation.

Signing books.

You can see all the happy smiles here :)

The team that made it all happen.

With volunteers and other students.

And this is clicked, just before I left the college,  finally saying a bye, heading back home.

As a writer, it is a LOT of effort to travel to Delhi from Bangalore, just for a talk. It is also a loss of at least 3working days.

But great interactions like this one, makes it all worthwhile and makes it so memorable--both for me as well as for the students who were there that day.
Thank you guys for the warmth, love and the superb hospitality and unforgettable moments. I really appreciate it.
Will definitely stop by your college, next time I am in Delhi.

Listen carefully to the lyrics!

"So do you listen to music?" I asked him.
"Of course I do. Who doesn't? Did you think I was some kind of a Tribal?"
That made me smile. I was meeting him for the first time and we both found the conversation smooth, with no awkward pauses, as we walked around the beautifully landscaped gardens. Did I mention it was night? Somehow nights always make even the mundane seem enchanting.

Ten days later he dedicated a song to me.
It was Air Supply's "Every Woman in the world"

It's been 20 years now and the song still holds the same magic.
It still puts a smile on my face when I hear it.

And sometimes, he looks into my eyes and sings it for me :)

Father's name and Husband's name

My mom is visiting me these days. I took her for a master health check up yesterday.
We had to fill up the hospital forms and I was filling it up for her.

There was a column for 'Father's/Husband's name.'

I found it meaningless to fill that in as neither her husband nor her father are even alive. How did it matter?
I didn't tell her anything though. The pain of losing my dad still opens up raw wounds inside me.

'What should I write? Father's name or husband's name?' I asked her.

'Strike that out, write daughter's name and put your name there,' said my mom, very matter of fact .

And  with that statement, in her quiet  unassuming straight-forward way, she struck down the centuries of the subtle, powerful patriarchal system that our great India is seeped in.

She is an amazing person, my mom.
And my strength too.

A pic of my mom and me clicked two days back :)

Why We Love the Way We Do. A New non-fiction book on relationships!

Hi there,Finally finally finally, the final proofs of my next book have been submitted. I have emerged from the nether world inhabited by letters, words, sentences, commas, apostrophes, italics, semi colons, alignment, paragraphs, fonts and a writer and a meticulous editor obsessed with making  the creation as perfect as perfect can be.Yes, my new book will be out soon! As many of you who follow my Facebook author page might know, this time it is a non-fiction book on relationships! I am really excited about this one as I have spent many hours researching  and reading up to write this and I am extremely pleased with how it has turned out. More than anything it answers relevant questions in a non-preachy, easy to relate manner. Here is the back-blurb that my editor wrote for the book:

Is it possible to tell if it is love or lust? How important is sex in a relationship? Why do break-ups hurt so much? How often should you message a person you fancy? How do you tell if someone is too young or old for you?  When it comes to relationships, these are the questions that most of us ponder about. No matter how young or old we are, we all want ways to make our relationships better. The best way to do that is to understand what makes us behave the way we do.
Why We Love the Way We Do is a collection of essays on relationships where bestselling novelist Preeti Shenoy discusses some of those issues and questions that people in relationships or those hoping to be in one, face. Based on her hugely popular columns in a national daily, the topics range from those particular to our modern, technology-filled world like how to move from an online relationship to a real-life one, how to find and keep love online, whether casual sex is worth the effort—to those immortal issues such how men and women communicate differently, how to deal with a broken heart and how jealousy ruins a relationship.
Filled with wonderful insights, sharp observations, humour, and real-life examples and written in her trademark lucid style Preeti Shenoy brings to this book a perceptiveness about love and friendship that have made her the country’s highest selling woman writer.
And here is the cover which I totally fell in love with!

For sneak peeks from the book, you could follow my Facebookauthor page. Or you could stay tuned here. I will tell you more about the book in my next blog post.Till then.Stay happy, stay loved!LovePreetihttp://preetishenoy.com/

All for love--how love blinds us.

black and white photo: 281de962_zpsfdc070ff.jpg

Satish and I were talking this morning. The papers were full of the details of the recent murder case that has been rocking the nation. It gets murkier and murkier. There is just too much negativity for me to even dwell on it, I said. And the extent to which people can go to--heinous and unimaginable. He understood.

We spoke then---about relationships.
About egos in relationships.About our need to be loved.
Appreciated and liked for who we are.
Our need to be understood and accepted.
Human beings are social creatures. We want to connect. We want to be heard.
Most of all we want to matter.

No wonder we form the strangest of connections. We forgive those whom we love. Even if they have hurt us, trampled over us, we turn a blind eye. We are too attached--too connected. We need them in our lives like a cocaine addict needs his next fix. We imagine our lives will be meaningless without them.
Love blinds us and binds us in ways that we can never even attempt to escape. It distorts our vision and our senses.

I read the last letter of Jiah Khan that her mother released to the media. I felt sorry because it was clearly a misguided notion of what love should be.

You cannot let your happiness depend on one single person, no matter how much you love them.
You have to love yourself a little more.

It's such a funny thing this love. It binds--and it can kill too.
But only if you allow it to take over you.

Keep it in you. Give it freely to all who come your way. Love with an open heart.

Care for others. But do take care of yourself first.

Will blog again soon.
Until then---stay happy and be grateful for the ones in your life whom you love and who love you back.
Forget the rest. They don't matter.

Love
Preeti

A letter from France, Bruce Dickinson and BNLF 2015

Something lovely happened the other day. I got a nice email from a reader in France.

I share it below with her permission:(click to enlarge)

It always feels wonderful when people from a different culture are able to relate to my writing.

Another bit of news from my end is that I will be a keynote speaker along with Bruce Dickinson (yes yes--the same Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden!) at Mumbai as a part of BNLF 2015
Here is my profile on the site: https://www.indiblogger.in/bnlf/preeti-shenoy
You can find all details on the site--read their FAQs too.

Other than that I have been BURIED under the second edits of my book. I had mentioned what writing a book involves.  So you can imagine how it has been for me. I emerge from my cocoon only for coffee/chai breaks. I am quite excited about this book, and will give you details soon.

Guess what I will be doing over the weekend? Of course you guessed it---finishing my edits. Sigh. Writer's life.
But I am not complaining. I really am not :) One has to endure the discomfort of pregnancy to have a baby!
Will post again soon and next time nothing about the book--I promise :)

What are your plans for the weekend? Share with me in my comment box so I get some vicarious pleasure!

The weeks gone by

It is amazing how time flies. It seems like just yesterday that I posted here, and now I check the blog and it is more than three weeks. Almost a month. Terrible, this neglect. Had this blog been a garden it would be full of nettles, overgrown weeds, touch-me-nots perhaps, and creepers climbing unto where they shouldn't be, moss, grass and a million such things which spring up when you are inattentive.

But the good thing is, neglect, no matter how dense can be wipe out with a single hour of hard work. That is what I did with my garden too, today. I weeded, threw out the dead leaves, trimmed a few plants that needed it, repotted  some where the roots had outgrown the container, added fertiliser to the others and at the end of an hour it looked loved, cared for. And now it is the blog's turn. Here I am--fret not :) *big hug*.

A lot has been happening in my life. A writer I admire a great deal (and a friend too now) Shinie Antony had launched her book 'Orphanage of words' and it was a treat to attend the book launch. She and Ricky Kej put up a great show, reading brilliant snippets from her writing, each line read like a poem.

Shinie Antony and Ricky Kej
The following week, I attended the litfest organised by SIWE (South Indian Writer's Ensemble) in Kerala. It was a superbly organised festival and I had two sessions. One was with Shinie Antony where we discussed 'Matters of the heart' and another called 'Muse in the marketplace' as a part of the panel which consisted of Vani mahesh, Pankaj Dubey and Benyamin. It was great to meet so many brilliant minds.

To see more pictures of the SIWE lit fest, go here.

The last few weeks have gone in a blur. Every morning I would wake up and attack my manuscript of my next book. My first edits had come in. If you want to know what the first edits involve and what writing a book involves click here.

I had no clue when the sun rose or set, what date it was, and what was happening in the outside world. My world began and ended with my book! Incidentally for those who are curious my next is a non-fiction book. I have researched hours and hours for it. And each piece in it would be something relevant to us--something that would help us connect with our loved ones better, something that gives us answers to questions we were too afraid to ask but always wanted to know. I am pretty excited about how it has all finally turned out, but I will tell you more details  a bit later. Right now, it is like I have come up gasping for air and have finally started noticing my surroundings.

I clicked a selfie to commemorate the occasion of finishing the first edit of my 7th book.
Here it is--the joy evident on my face

Hope your weeks have been good and productive too.
I shall come back again soon.
And this time no neglect. I promise :)
