Advice to Former Me
I was thinking today about what, if anything, I wish I'd known before I was published. To be honest, I could probably fill an entire book of things that I wish I'd known pre-publication, but I was trying to narrow it down to one statement. If I could tell my pre-published self ONE thing, what would it be?
And it's this: Be wisely afraid.
There are a lot of things that I feel very confident about at this point in my career. I'm no longer afraid that no agent will want to read my work, or that no...

Damn Historical Novel
I'll admit something-- I didn't write yesterday. Or the day before. I was busy designing uniforms for the guard I coach and filming a video for my Spanish publishers.
But that's okay.
With SISTERS RED, I was writing as much as 20k in a WEEKEND. It was flying by. And it felt natural-- 20k in a weekend wasn't hard. So I tried to do the same thing with PURITY, the novel I wrote right after SISTERS RED. And I ended up with a decent beginning, and a back half of absolute craziness because I rushed t...

Gimme Gimme More
When I see the word "Gimme", I automatically think of Britney Spear's disastrous "Gimme More" VMA performance. So, if you'd like your listening and reading in perfect sync, feel free to turn on that song now.*
This post is about dreams and goals, and how they almost always come with a "gimme more" attached.
When I first started writing seriously, the only thing I wanted was an agent. I felt like, if I could just land an agent, the rest of my writing career would fall into place. The world would...

Free time!
Right now, I am buried in things to send to the post office. Seriously. I have a laundry basket full of prizes to send, plus a table full of invitations to send. I have a feeling this trip to the post office is going to be painfully expensive, given that I can barely even lift the laundry basket. I can't believe how amazing the twitter contest was on Monday-- #sistersred was even a trending topic in Canada for a little while! I love you Canada. It totally made my release day.
Anyway, so on top...

RELEASE DAY!
People...SISTERS RED IS OUT! Officially! Today is the official release day, so you should be able to find it in most bookstores!
And now, I present you with a SISTERS RED flashback.
I started playing with the idea of SISTERS RED in 2007, but didn't start writing it till 2008. I made these character scrapbooks to try and help figure out all the pieces to my two main characters, Scarlett and Rosie:
I finished SISTERS RED around May of 2008, with much help from some fabulous writers, like Saundra M...

Crit Partners and Bleeding "Red"
Today is a guest blog post, written by the very talented Saundra Mitchell, whose book SHADOWED SUMMER will be out in paperback on June 8th and whose book THE VESPERTINE is coming out next spring (and is totally amazing, btw). Not only is Saundra cool enough to guest blog here, but she's cool enough to answer the MOST frequently asked question I get!
Like most of you, I enjoy showing up for Jackson's Livechats. Not only do I get to catch glimpses of my favorite Space Dog, but I enjoy listening ...

Adult Fail
First things first: I wrote a guest post over at I Was A Teenage Book Geek on my total and complete love for The Boxcar Children series, and mass series in general. You should go see it HERE.
I've spent the last few days stalking my book. Seriously. Every day I go to the Barnes & Noble website to see if more stores list SISTERS RED as "in stock." I've been to all the nearby Borders. I even went to all the bookstores near my parents' house. I sort of thought that since SISTERS RED is my second ...

On Writing Advice
I get a lot of emails or comments or tweets asking me questions about writing. Stuff like "How do I know when a book is done?" or "How exactly should I outline?" or sometimes even "How do I know if my book is good?"
And the answer, pretty much without fail, is: I haven't the foggiest.
It's not that I'm withholding answers from you-- I swear I'm not. It's just that there isn't ONE WAY to write a book. There's not ONE WAY to outline or ONE WAY to know that your book is good (in fact, I'm not sure...
