Book Description:
Raine is a slave, a gladiator. Known as the Bloody Wolf, he is the champion of all champions in the Empire of Khalid. Ly’Tana is a warrior princess of Kel’Halla and is set to wed the heir to Khalid’s throne, Crown Prince Broughton. When Raine and his new wizard pal, Rygel, accidentally murder the High King, they set in motion events rapidly spiraling out of control. Ly’Tana discovers the true, and violent, nature of her betrothed, a man nicknamed Prince Brutal for his vicious nature, and escapes her marriage.
But Brutal will stop at nothing to have her for his wife. To entice his runaway bride into a trap, he brings down and captures her griffin bodyguard, Bar. Ly’Tana vows to have Bar back or die trying. She seeks the help of Raine and Rygel, and frees Bar from Brutal’s clutches. Yet, in doing so, Raine and Ly’Tana are forced to flee for their lives, hunted by Brutal’s secretive assassins.
Can they escape the hunters and their silent, evil hounds? Can Ly’Tana evade Brutal’s hungry need to marry her and seize her beloved country? Can Raine keep Ly’Tana alive and still save himself from capture and torture? Can they stop themselves from falling in love?
Thus begins the first novel of The Saga of the Black Wolf series.

Excerpt:

Driven by the panic that still crept forward to nag at the edges of my mind, I lurched onward for another hour. I hopped and skipped forward, keeping the fear and panic at bay by concentrating on not tripping over rocks or deadwood. I quickened my pace to that of a crippled beggar. If the Tongu came for me now, they would have no trouble whatsoever in overtaking me. I tried to increase my speed, hobbling and skipping along, but despite my care, stones and undergrowth constantly tripped me up. I set my jaw grimly, and stubbornly stumbled on.

The deathly quiet around me informed me they hunted me still. How close were they? The pervading evil only told me they were close, but not how close. They might be a mile behind, or only a few rods. I’d never know until their hounds nipped my heels. They knew I was naked and injured and had nowhere to go. With Wolf tamed and broken or dead (my mind shied away from that thought), they knew I was no match for them. I despised the fact that they were right.

Kel’Ratan and the rest of my warband lay only a few leagues to the east. No doubt, they were already hunting for me, worried, seeking me with every resource they had at their disposal. They would have no idea where Wolf might have taken me, but I knew they would have started a search of the forest. Wanting to estimate my position from the escarpment, I decided I was further from it than I previously thought. I struggled on.

Something passed between the sun and me. A bird? Whatever it was flit past the candle of my eye in less than a heartbeat. I glanced up, but saw nothing but sun and green. I stopped mid-hobble, scanning what I could see of the sky between the tops of the trees, looking, searching all around for another shadow. Could it be? Come back, come back, damn it.

Two grizzled hounds burst out from the undergrowth a few rods from me. Their lips skinned back from savage white teeth, but once again, in a fleet instant, I saw their muzzled tied shut. Whipping my crutch out from under my arm, I cocked it. Balancing my weight on my good right leg, I swung the crutch, now a heavy club. I had chosen well. Solid oak and still green, it was as hard as iron. The hound, a few strides ahead of its mate, leaped toward me. My club caught the beast squarely on the side of its head. Skull crunched under the impact. I had no time to consider its death, when the other hound also leaped, snarling voiceless.

My warrior instincts and training took over. As in swordplay, rather than meet it head on, I melted to the side. My weight, solid on my right leg, shifted me to my right, where I held the club. The hound’s leap took him past me, but he wheeled. Almost mid-jump, he turned, his hind legs thrusting him forward, digging furrows in the dirt. My club, on its returning swing, caught the hound under the jaw. I hit him hard enough to snap him backward. He flipped up and back, hitting the ground hard on his spine and tail.

I didn’t look to see if I killed him. I knew the Tongu would run right behind their hellhounds. I readied myself, my stout club, undamaged by the two hard impacts, raised high.

They did not disappoint me. Three of them burst out from under the trees, their tattooed faces and scarred throats as familiar as old friends. Undaunted by my readiness and my club, they rushed at me. They held no weapons in their hands. So they still wanted me alive.
Come on, big boy. Let’s dance.

The first one ducked my swing, but I still hit him on the shoulder rather than his head I aimed at. He staggered to the side, passing me by. My returning blow caught the second in the ribs. His choked off wheeze told me I did some real damage. I set myself to receive the third when my left leg failed me utterly.

I needed two sound legs with which to fight. When I instinctively sought to balance on both legs to bring my club around to swing at the third Tongu, running a few feet behind his brothers, my left leg collapsed under me. My wild swing missed the Tongu completely. His arm around my waist finished what my treacherous left leg started. I went down, the Tongu’s foul smelling, hissing body on top of mine.

The impact knocked the wind from me. Gasping for much needed breath, I hit him, hard, on the ear with my fist. History surely repeats itself, for the Tongu hissed in pain and struck me a wicked blow across the face.

Half-stunned and sick with pain, I struggled, kicking upward with my knee, seeking his soft genitals. I hit only his rock hard thigh instead. He grunted, his dark evil eyes peering down at me, his triumphant grin white in his tanned face. He pinned me solidly, my wrists hard against the damp earth and dead leaves. I lost my grip on my club.

“We got you now, bitch,” he hissed, his foul breath reeking in my nostrils.

I conjured saliva into my dry mouth and spit.

As in my archery, my aim was true. Squarely into his leering right eye, my spit hit. His face contorted into a mask of rage and hate. This time his fist almost made me lose consciousness.
Darkness filled my sight. No. Wait. My eyes, open wide, still contained vision. The darkness filled the forest. Beyond the Tongu’s foul, grinning face, something impossibly huge blocked the sun, casting all into shadow. A deep, resonant sound, never before heard by a living human being, roared into the evil silence. Rage. Hate. Fury. None of those words could describe the daemonic sound that filled the forest. The earth shook under the sheer magnitude of that sound. I jerked my head, tossing my hair from my eyes.

The Tongu’s evil eyes widened in sudden frantic panic. His leering mouth bowed down in horror. Blood drained from his darkly tanned skin, leaving his flesh paler than pale. He began to turn, slow, too slow, to face this new peril. His hands released mine as he made to boost himself off me, to throw himself off me. To escape.

A huge eagle’s claw, with talons the length of a man’s hand and sharp enough to gut a dragon reached down. It scooped him up, circled his torso, lifted him from me with all the effort a man might use to lift a mug of ale. So precise did those deadly talons seize him, I felt no touch of those claws on my bare belly at all.

Devil’s eyes. Daemon’s eyes. Yellow and black. With the dark shadows behind, the devil’s eyes glowed yellow and black. For surely hell herself had vomited up this monster.
How can a man with no voice scream? Yet scream he did. His black eyes rolled back into his head, revealing the whites. The Tongu struggled, pushing against the immense hand that held him fast in its deadly grip. Yet his struggles were those of a mouse caught within the jaws of the cat. A savage raptor beak the size of a horse’s head bent down –

- Bar bit deep into the Tongu’s neck.

As I might have torn off a chunk of meat with my teeth, he ripped the man’s body in half. The Tongu’s heart and brain lived for a moment longer than he did. His hissing, wailing scream as Bar tossed the two pieces of the man’s corpse into the brush died away and was lost.

Catlike, he spun. His tail whipped the air above me, his lion hind legs digging deep furrows into the loamy forest soil to either side of me. I half sat up in time to see the other two Tongu bolt. One reached the safety of the trees. The other….

Bar pounced on him. Dirt and dead leaves flew about me in a shower as he lunged after the fleeing assassin. This one had no time to scream. Bar’s eagle front foot caught the Tongue by the shoulder, ripping down, taking off not only the shoulder, but sheared deep into his torso. His raptor’s beak tore the man’s head off. Shaking his foot as a person might shake water off his hand, Bar discarded the corpse that caught on his wicked talons. As hardened as I was by war, battle and violence, my gut lurched at the sight of both men’s ravaged corpses. While Bar accompanied me in battle, protected me from enemies, guarded my back, I had never seen him kill before with such ruthlessness, such a savage viciousness.

He still wasn’t satisfied. The hound I injured hobbled on three legs, eerily whining and chuffing, followed after his surviving master into the forest. Bar’s single swipe cut the dog in half, red blood fountaining high to splash redly on a nearby tree trunk.

Never before had I ever been afraid of my griffin. Never in all our years together had I ever felt in any danger from him. Never before had I looked at my friend and all but pissed myself.

When he wheeled about to face me, streaked with thick dark blood over his eagle’s beak, down his feathered mane, his raised right claw oozing gore, my empty bladder loosened. A raw, primitive terror ran through me. The terror a defenseless human felt when faced with a furious predator, a predator that killed easily and with little effort. The red gore, his lifted razor-sharp talons, failed to frighten me. ‘Twas his eyes that caused my gut to lurch in sudden panic, caused my throat to close and shut off all breath. His raptor eyes, those daemon eyes, filled with such a lust for blood, for human blood, brought out the primordial fear in me.

He blinked. In that instant, Bar returned to sanity. I suddenly saw my friend in those awful black and yellow daemon eyes. Bar’s concern, worry and panic over my safety returned with such a wash of love I began to cry. I flung my arms about his feathered neck, weeping with unashamed relief. My body shook uncontrollably, delayed reactions from the pain, the panic, the trauma of my ordeal bringing out a flurry of the shakes.

Sitting down on his lion haunches, Bar held me close to him, his taloned right foot circling my back, his feathered head bowed over my shoulder. The blood of his victims dripped down over my naked body, but I didn’t care. Sharp chirps and hisses told me of his anxiety and worry. When neither Wolf nor I arrived at the monastery, he flew in all directions since dawn, searching for me.

His immense presence, his soft fur-feather mane scenting of blood, musty earth and sweet air, his huge body wrapped about mine brought with them some measure of quiet to my jangled nerves. My tears wetted his mane, dripping from a white feather to the ground below. I sniffled, my nostrils sucking in stray lion hairs. I sneezed. Choking on tears and snorted laughter, I finally grew some sense and straightened.

Leaning against his sturdy shoulder, I pulled my hair back from my face and looked into his predatory tawny eyes.

“What kept you?”

A Romantica® historical paranormal erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

In this excerpt from chapter two, Aubert is corned by a long-time family associate Mister Aldridge and given some bad news.

…Aubert’s heart hammered in his throat as he forced himself to stop and turn. He was confronted by the cold gray gaze of Mister Aldridge, the family’s solicitor-trustee. Mister Aldridge was the sort of man who could incite vexation with a glance. The last thing Aubert needed today was more provocation. Corrine had fled the ballroom and he was no longer free to pursue her. He hated Mister Aldridge for it and fought a rising snarl. “Our obligatory annual meeting is tomorrow, Mister Aldridge. You’re a day early. Why?”

“Tomorrow might be too late, lad.” Mister Aldridge stared down the bridge of his hatchet-sharp nose. He stood in the doorway of the drawing room, slender and straight, attired in an elegant charcoal riding coat paired with a somewhat wild head of platinum hair. “I’m here a day early to enforce the conditions of the Marston family will and head off possible disasters before they occur.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Aubert padded toward the drawing room. He drew his broad shoulders back and stood at his full height, which was taller than anyone else on the plantation by a considerable margin. “I’m not a lad, Mister Aldridge, so stop treating me like one. I’m the master of this plantation and it’s never been more profitable. I’m not afraid to work hard and make my own decisions. I’m a grown man. I’m twenty-seven. I shouldn’t have to endure these annual meetings with you or the added insult of being called a lad.”

Mister Aldridge frowned. “Correction—you’re twenty-six. You won’t be twenty- seven until midnight and your stubborn refusal to take my advice is what makes you a lad.”

Aubert passed close and gave Mister Aldridge’s shoulder a deliberate nudge as he entered the drawing room and headed toward a sideboard set with breakfast. He picked up a teapot and poured a cup of strong black tea.

“It’s cooled.” Mister Aldridge frowned with disapproval. “But drink some anyway. It might clear your head.”

Aubert sipped the tepid tea. “I’ll admit I don’t look forward to our yearly meetings. May I be so bold as to ask when they will end?”

Mister Aldridge smiled. “Do as I say, Aubert, and this meeting can be our last.” He walked to the far side of the massive mahogany desk and placed a chunky, age- weathered wooden box in the center.

Aubert eyed the box with dread. He hated Mister Aldridge’s unending annual surprises.
Mister Aldridge drew a deep breath. “As you know, when I was a young man I was apprenticed to your grandfather, the senior Aubert Marston. He possessed a commanding spirit I respected. I learned a lot from him. I was honored to be in his service and swore to carry out my duties with the highest integrity.”

Mister Aldridge turned toward the far wall and pointed at an imposing oil portrait of a handsome young man with a dimpled chin. “Your father Graham and I were raised as if we were brothers. The night you were born, in this house, I was present and promised Graham I would always look after you until you were ready to look after yourself. What you don’t understand is that our families—yours and mine—share a common ancestor and a bond thicker than blood. You treat these annual meetings since your dear parents’ unfortunate deaths as a great inconvenience, but I see them as a soul- honored necessity. I also have it in writing from your late father that they must take place.

“I am here to enforce your late father’s wishes and act in Graham’s stead. If you don’t like it that’s too bad. I do this out of loyalty to Graham. You see, there are no more male Marstons in the world—you are the last in your branch of the family—and I will not allow the noble Marston line to flicker out in disgrace.”

Aubert balked. “I’ve done nothing disgraceful.”

Mister Aldridge huffed under his breath. “Not yet.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” An odd chill raced through him. The fleeting thought occurred that Mister Aldridge had heard rumors of, or even sensed, his inner turmoil and strange metamorphoses. He didn’t want anyone to know about his personal troubles, and cringed.

“Aubert, why didn’t you follow my advice from last year’s meeting?” Mister Aldridge’s bony fingertip tapped the tabletop. “You had an entire year to act. I handpicked several eligible, wealthy young women from the ancient Marston bloodline and you didn’t bother to contact any of them.”

“What the hell, Aldridge? An arranged marriage from the old country? In case you didn’t notice, we don’t live in a feudal society.”

“Really?” Mister Aldridge’s gaze swept across the elegant plantation drawing room, built on the labor of slaves. “You don’t see the irony, do you?” He reached toward the weathered wooden box. “Do you have any idea how much this pains me, to arrive today and confront you this way? Today should be a day of celebration, not incarceration.”

“Incarceration?” Aubert paced the room. “Are you mad? I spent this past year working like a dog. Do you have any idea what this plantation has endured in the last twelve months? Cotton blight, weevils, floods, hail, cane rats and swamp fever that kept half my men from the fields. I rolled up my sleeves, dealt with it all and made a profit on top of it. Exactly what am I being accused of?”

“You’ve worked hard—that’s not the problem—but you ignored my most important request.”

Aubert threw his hands into the air. “That I marry before my twenty-seventh birthday? Were you serious about that? I thought that was just more of your outlandish tomfoolery. I’ve been busy, Mister Aldridge, and I didn’t meet the right girl. Besides, it’s none of your goddamn business whether I marry or not.”

“In fact it is my business, and since you’ve made a deliberate choice not to act on your own behalf, for the good of the Marston family legacy and the innocent people of this plantation you’ve forced me to take action.” Mister Aldridge opened the weathered box, revealing a rusted set of medieval-looking iron manacles and chains. “It’s no use fighting—the chains carry a heavy enchantment that you will not be able to resist. During transport, Le Brut Entraver is meant to protect you from yourself and prevent harm to others.”…

The inspiration behind Hollow’s End with Marianne Morea

The inspiration behind Hollow’s End
People always ask me about the inspiration for my stories, and I always answer that it comes from everyday life, from the people I meet and the places I go. My books to date have been mostly Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance. I love the idea of a ‘what if’ world. A world of magic and of things that go beyond what we can see and comprehend. I also love to laugh. Humor to me is the most powerful aphrodisiac around. I love to find humor in almost everything, even when life gets heavy. It’s the reason I try to make my readers laugh, even when my stories get dark.

With Hollow’s End the inspiration was a bit different. I still love the whole idea of ‘what if’, but in this case the question of what if came after the actual historic fact. The inspiration for Hollow’s End came from the story of Cornelius and Elizabeth Van Tassell. Cornelius was an American patriot fighting against the British during the Revolutionary War. At that time in 1777, tensions were high, and the American forces were starting to become a thorn in then Governor Tryon’s side. He gave the order to “Burn the Tarrytowns” and that included the hamlet of Sleepy Hollow. The Van Tassell home and lands were on the list to be burned, and Cornelius captured as a prisoner of war. On the night of November 17, 1777, one of the coldest of the year, the burning occurred at the hands of a hessian commander by the name of Andreas Emmerich. He was so vicious in his command, that he burned the house with the Van Tassell’s two year old daughter, Leah, still inside. As Elizabeth Van Tassel cried for her daughter, her husband Cornelius was dragged away as a prisoner of war tied to them back of one of his cattle. BUT, a soldier in Emmerich’s command, also a hessian, broke rank and rescued the child, reuniting her with her mother and bringing the two to safety in a root cellar to await help. Town legend then takes the story further, that when this same soldier was later killed, decapitated in a skirmish, the Van Tassells had him buried in a clandestine Christian burial and interred in an unmarked grave in the Old Dutch Burial ground. It was to repay kindness with kindness, but him being a mercenary on the side of the British, they couldn’t bury him outright in a patriot strong hold such as the Old Dutch Church. THAT, my readers and friend, is the inspiration for Hollow’s End. A wronged spirit in the graveyard, dishonored for centuries as being a harbinger of horror as the headless horseman…

Only Hunter and Rowen hold the key to locking the past in the past, and setting old wrongs to right. Can justice be served? Can the two find a way to straddle both worlds and solve the mystery when they don’t understand the clues? Inspired by historical events that surround the village of Sleepy Hollow and the famous legend that shares its name, this Young Adult Horror takes you on a journey full of history and suspense with a splash of romance and the paranormal.

About the Author:
I'm a New Yorker, born and bred, and for the most part my stories and my characters embody the grit and complexity of the city. An avid traveler, I use my experiences from around the world in all my books. There isn't a place my characters live or travel to that I haven't been myself.
Like most authors, my love affair with the written word started as a child with the books I read. Even today, I love to read almost as much as I love to write. My favorite stories are the ones that transport me, that bring me to places and introduce me to characters that leave me breathless...the ones that spark the fire of my imagination, allowing me to dream in the world of 'what if?'
I've always been a scribbler, and from the time I could write my name I've been making up stories. So it was no surprise when I earned degrees in both Journalism and Fine Art, but after working in the trenches of Madison Avenue as a Graphic Artist, I decided to do what I love most full time. Write.
In the meantime I am also a founding member and former President of The Paranormal Romance Guild, a not-for-profit organization for readers and authors of the genre...and when I'm not 'bichok' (but in a chair hands on keyboard), I'm spending time with my husband and our three kids, traveling to exciting, romantic places ...for inspiration, of course!

Character Interview: Cleocatra from Susan Mcleod's Fire and Shadow

Character Interview: Cleocatra
Interviewer: “Welcome, everyone, and thank you for coming. Today I have a very special guest‒an adorable kitty named Cleocatra. Hello, baby! Look what I’ve brought you. A treat! Nummies!”
*Cleocatra gives a long, hard stare.* “You may place your offering before me, and I will choose whether or not to accept it. In spite of your ridiculous language, I’m glad you understand that I am to be worshipped.”
*Interviewer a trifle taken aback* “Ah-okay! Can you please tell us what kind of cat you are?”
“The perfect kind, of course.”
“Well‒yes‒I meant, what breed?”
*Cleocatra draws herself up to full height* “I am a direct descendent of the cat goddess Bastet. My ancestors were held sacred in the temples of ancient Egypt. Alas that those days are no more. But I am not without purpose. I care for the human Lily Evans. And believe me, it is not easy work.”
“Your owner is prone to trouble, isn’t she?”
*Cleocatra growls.* “My what?”
“Your‒um‒mommy?”
*Cleo derisively* “Human females can give birth to kittens? I was not aware of that.”
“It’s just a way of saying‒the person you live with, who feeds you and makes sure you’re all right.”
“Lily is my companion. We help each other as equals‒although she is not of ancient royal blood.”
“You’ve actually saved her life, haven’t you?”
“On more than one occasion. You’ve heard of the way I stared down that wolf, and fought kidnappers so bravely?”
*Interviewer scans notes.* “Yes, yes of course. Amazing. It does seem that Lily’s been having quite a time lately.”
“Ever since she met That Man.” *Cleocatra hisses.* “She was such a sensible girl until HE came along. She knew who deserved all of her attention until then.”
“Do you mean Kent Ashton? Her boyfriend from England?”
*Cleo flexes her claws.* “Would you actually like for me to scratch you?”
“No!” *Interviewer backs away.* “You don’t care for Kent.”
“I positively loathe him. There’s only one man who belongs with Lily.”
“And that would be‒Dr. Stephen Mallory?”
*Cleo purrs.* “He loves me. We understand one another. So calm, so competent. So free with the tuna fish. If only Lily would realize that he was meant for us.”
“Perhaps she will. Thank you very much for talking with me, Cleocatra.”
*Cleo nods.* “I have decided to accept your gift. Go with the blessings of Bastet.”
*Interviewer leaves, and Cleocatra pounces on the treat.*

Blitz- Release by Annie Nicholas

Venice
One of the cities my characters have to travel through on their crazy journey is Venice, city of water and lights. It sounds romantic. 118 island connected with bridges. No cars, just boats and pedestrian walkways. Ancient architecture  at every turn. I was surprised what my mind turned this place into when Connie Bence, my heroine, finally arrives at her dream city.

Where we stood the canals ran black with inky water, and the dark cobbled streets echoed our footsteps. I hadn’t imagined this sinister side of Venice. My mind held images of crystal-clear blue waters, pots over-flowing with brightly colored flowers, and song filling the air. I guess the night touched all things. Even the ancient brick buildings seemed to weep at our passing as the condensed humidity trickled down their walls. As I stared down at the water I recalled an unexpected swim in the Danube River in Budapest. It had seemed like hands of the unfound dead reached for my ankles in the murky waters.

ISBN: 978-0615878775ISBN-10: 0615878776
Number of pages: 325Word Count:  70,000
Cover Artist: Damonza
Book Description:
An opium-addicted airship racer.
An infamous poet living in self-imposed exile.
An ancient treasure about to fall into the wrong hands.
Melanie Karsak’s “Chasing the Star Garden” takes the reader on an exciting adventure from the gritty opium dens of gaslamp London to the gem-colored waters of the ancient world, introducing us Lily Stargazer, a loveable but reckless airship racer with a famous lover and a shattered past.
Lily Stargazer is having a bad day. She just lost the London leg of the 1823 Airship Grand Prix. To top it off, a harlequin fleeing from constables shoved a kaleidoscope down her pants, told her to fly to Venice, then threw himself from her airship tower.
What’s a girl to do? For Lily, the answer is easy: drink absinthe and smoke opium.

Lily’s lover, Lord Byron, encourages her to make the trip to Venice. Lily soon finds herself at the heart of an ancient mystery which has her running from her past and chasing true love and the stars along the way.
About the Author:
Melanie Karsak grew up in rural northwestern Pennsylvania where there was an abysmal lack of entertainment, so she turned to reading and hiking. Apparently, rambling around the woods with a head full of fantasy worlds and characters will inspire you to become an author. Be warned. Melanie wrote her first novel, a gripping piece about a 1920s stage actress, when she was 12. A steampunk connoisseur, white elephant collector, and caffeine junkie, the author now resides in Florida with her husband and two children. Melanie is an Instructor of English at Eastern Florida State College.

Vampires: Dead, Undead, or Something Else by Roxanne Rhoads
In most myths, legends and even in plenty of popular fiction vampires are described as either dead or undead, sometimes referred to as walking corpses.
No heartbeat, no need to breathe, no need to eat food or drink anything other than blood.Honestly all that doesn’t make a whole hell of a lot of sense to me.
For me vampires are different and extraordinary creatures- and not dead at all. Just different.
I can understand them being described as dead in the early incarnations. Because before the Gothic literature of the 1800s romanticized vampires early myths and legends portrayed them as monsters- grotesque walking corpses. More like today’s zombies than the sexy, romantic and sometimes sparkling vampires that we often envision them to be.
I see being changed into as vampire as a transformation, not death- at least not completely. It is death and rebirth. A catalyst that transforms a person from human to Other. Changing from human to vampire is the death of the normal human life but not a true death.
I simply can’t wrap my head around the concept of a vampire being dead because of several things.
One they need to feed to “survive”. If you need to survive then obviously you’re not really dead, are you?
Another thing- rapid healing abilities. If you can heal, how can you be dead? Dead things don’t heal.
Other things I don’t agree with are the cold skin and lack of heartbeat and breathing. I think vampires are evolved and don’t need to breath as often as humans and their hearts don’t beat like ours- and the slowness of their heartbeat and breaths has something to do with the whole immortality thing.
And the cold skin… when they get cold that just means they need to feed, if they are fully fed their skin is just as warm as ours.
That brings me to the need for blood. As I mentioned I see vampirism as a transformation, a disease or mutation that changes the human body into something else, something more. It changes the metabolism and the higher functions of the body. To keep these processes going the body burns up its blood supply and constantly needs to be replenished.
The other powers of vampires- the glamour and mind control and all that, even the teleportation and shape shifting that some can do…well that goes into the magic slot.
I think vampirism is one part disease two parts magic.
In many of my stories the vampires defy the normal vampire conventions. They eat, they walk in daylight, they have heartbeats, and they breathe (usually). I try not to describe them as dead or undead and I don’t often stick them in coffins or in the ground.
In my book, Hex and the Single Witch, the vampires are all a little different from each other. Some have issues with sunlight, some do not, some have silver sensitivities some do not.
This is because there are many species of Others (fae, demon, shifter, witch, etc) than have interbred with humans over the centuries. When a human is turned into a vampire the dormant powers inside them become active. Most humans will never know they have “Other” blood inside them until the catalyst of becoming a vampire brings that dormant power to the surface. In addition vampires also gain some of their abilities and powers from the vampire that made them, their sire. The result is a species of vampires that have a wide variety of powers and abilities. Which is why they are so hard to track, kill or fight- you never know what you’re going up against when you deal with a vamp.
A 100% human with no “Other” blood inside will not survive the change into a vampire. In the Vehicle City Vampire series I wanted to take all the myths, legends and variances of vampire abilities, mix them all up and create an explanation as to why vampires are so different. I hope that readers will enjoy my take on vampirism.

You can win- an ebook copy of each book below-winner's choice of eformat

Hex and the Single WitchVehicle City Vampires Book OneRoxanne Rhoads
Anwyn Rose is descended from a long line of powerful witches yet she can barely cast spells young witchlings have mastered. She has one functioning witch gift, the power of knowing, which has enabled her to find a position as a Detective on Flint’s Preternatural Investigation Team.
It’s a new era in Vehicle City. After the auto factories shut down, the human residents left the city by the thousands making it the perfect new haunt for supernaturals of all sorts, especially vampires- who now ran the city.
Paranormal crime is on the rise. An old evil has slithered in along with a serial killer, who appears to be a vampire, and is draining young women in the city.
Anwyn is on the case with her sexy partner Detective Mike Malone. Complicating things is her relationship Galen, a vampire who looks more guilty than innocent, although Anwyn trusts her instincts even if her power is on the fritz.
Mysterious spells, compromising situations, and a possible demon on the loose make it hard to focus on the case, but Anwyn has to make things right before the human police execute the wrong vampire.
Hex and the Single Witch contains magick, a little bit of mystery, a lot of supernatural mayhem, and a sexy love triangle that will leave you wanting more.

A Halloween to Remember

What says Halloween better than a wild party at an old Victorian mansion complete with its own cemetery? Perhaps meeting the man of your dreams thanks to the magic of Halloween.

Adena can’t believe her eyes when she spots Dimitri in the library- he looks like something straight off the cover of a historical romance novel-the type of guy she’s always dreamed of. Too bad he disappears before she has the chance to introduce herself. When she finally spots him again later that night she decides she’s not letting him get away again. Adena thinks she’s finally found the one. Until she wakes up alone the next morning- in the cemetery.

Halloween magic brought them together but will it be strong enough to keep them together?

Introducing The Soundtrack for No Shelter from Darkness by Mark D Evans

“No Shelter from Darkness” - The SoundtrackThis post is quite a hard one to do. Enjoyable, but hard. The problem lies, as always, with my pedantic-ness. What with my debut novel, “No Shelter from Darkness”, being set in 1941, the purist in me says that the soundtrack can only contain songs created during or before that year. While I could do that, and while I would somehow make it awesome, I’m not going to restrict myself to that rule. My justification for this lies with a film (of course). “Plunkett & Macleane” is a 1999 film directed by Jake Scott and starring the brilliant Jonny Lee Miller (currently America’s contemporary Sherlock Holmes), Robert Carlyle (currently America’s contemporary Rumplestiltskin) and Liv Tyler (currently America’s contemporary, um, Liv Tyler). What’s great about this awesome retelling of “The Gentleman Highwayman” (yep, it’s based on a true story), is that while it’s set in the 18th-century, the amazing soundtrack by Craig Armstrong (one of my favourites) includes all kinds of crazy techno and drum n’ bass influences. Indeed, one of my favourite scenes is a traditional ballroom dance set to a thumping techno track. Thus, it’s cool to break convention and I’m gonna be cool and use contemporary music to score/soundtrack my book.A couple of notes, though. This isn’t meant to be taken too seriously. This isn’t a list of music I listened to while writing the book, and this music didn’t influence the book or story. It would be best to think of it as I did while creating it, which is as a hip soundtrack to a film version of the book.Anyway, enough of the talking and onto the track list:
1.      Prologue (Valencia Station) - (“Chan Chan” by Buena Vista Club)2.     Main Title (The Cruentus Saga) - (“Raanjhan” by MIDIval PunditZ)3.     In The Shelter, In The Blitz - (“Parks on Fire” by Trifonic)4.     Cast Out After The Blitz - (“A Town Called Obselete” by Andreya Triana)5.     Badger Time - (“Dead Things” by Emiliana Torrini)6.     A Brief Reprieve - (“Paradise” by Coldplay)7.     Lynne’s Downtime - (“Moonlight Serenade” by Glenn Miller)8.     Beth’s Dream (Red Rain) - (“Sound Mirrors” by Coldcut)9.     A Different Kind of Blues - (“On The Run” by Natalie Imbruglia)10.  Beating The Bully (No Shelter from Darkness) - (“Nocturnal” by UNKLE)11.   Beth’s New World - (“The Pretender” by The Foo Fighters)12.  A Danger To Everyone - (“Boadicea” by Enya)13.  Oliver, In The Pit, With Blood - (“In The House—In A Heartbeat” by John Murphy)14.  New Best Friends Part - (“The Ballad Of Sarah & Jack” by David Holmes)15.  Controlling The Darkness - (“Light & Day” by The Polyphonic Spree)16.  End Credits (The Cruentus Saga) - (“Enjoy The Silence” by Hybrid)17.  Epilogue (Things To Come) - (“Exogenesis: Symphony, Pt.1 - Overture” by Muse)
Total running time: 78 minutes (one CD)
Unfortunately due to copyright restrictions, I can’t give you all a free copy of the soundtrack. However, I did create a Youtube playlist which I urge you all to listen to, because more than anything else, all the music is awesome!http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxf7KkyJuTjVh8kC-x1iPekrqnm2VcFAY

What do you think? Have you read the book and think other songs would be more appropriate? Are you yet to read the book but want to do so even more now that you’ve seen this playlist?

Book Description:
“Her hands began to shake as she looked down wide-eyed at the blood-soaked cotton that covered her.”
London emerges from the Blitz, and every corner of the city bears the scars. In the East End—a corner fairing worse than most—thirteen year-old Beth Wade endures this new way of life with her adoptive family. She also suffers the prejudice against her appearance, an abiding loneliness and now the trials of adolescence. But with this new burden comes a persisting fatigue and an unquenchable thirst that ultimately steals her into unconsciousness . . .
What happens next is the start of something Beth will fear more than the war itself. She begins to change in ways that can’t be explained by her coming-of-age, none more frightening than her need to consume blood. The family who took her in and the former best friend who’s taken refuge in their house can never know. Aware of the danger she poses to everyone around her, Beth has never felt more alone. But someone else knows Beth’s secret . . . someone who understands just how different she really is. He alone can decrypt her past and explain her future. But he’s been sworn to destroy her kind, and as Beth grows ever more dangerous, he’s forced to take sides.
Can Beth keep all of the secrets? Can she trust a man sworn to kill her? And can she stop the vampire within from taking her humanity?
