Book Description:
Chef Ivy Turin is great with food, but not so good with men. When a mysterious vendor gifts her with a jade necklace guaranteed to find true love, she is skeptical. But no sooner does she put on the necklace then star football player, Sam Rockney, walks into her restaurant. Athletic, intelligent, not to mention drop dead gorgeous, Sam seems like the perfect man for her. Too perfect. Is the sexy Seattle quarterback for real, or is there something wrong with Mr. Perfect?
Chapter One

Seattle, Washington, July, 2013

“Have you noticed nobody holds hands anymore?” Chef Ivy Turin picked up a tomato from the pile of neatly displayed produce at Pike Street Market. “It was my favorite part of dating in high school. There was no PDA allowed in the halls, but my boyfriend would sneak up next to me and slip his fingers through mine. That simple little gesture made me feel special.”

Beth, her sous chef, eyed her with sarcastic amusement. “You are special.”

Ivy selected several more tomatoes and put them in the cloth grocery bag. Handing the items to the cashier, she fished money from her pocket. “Me? You’re as jaded as the necklaces in the next stall.”

“I’m jaded? You’re the one who hasn’t had a date since you dumped Kevin,” Beth said, examining an odd-looking fiddlehead fern. “Although I suppose I can’t blame you for being cautious after what he did to you. Stealing from the restaurant to cover his gambling debt was beyond wrong, but there are good guys out there.”

“I’m well aware of that,” Ivy said, accepting the change from the cashier. Although nine months had passed since the breakup, Kevin’s betrayal still stung. It wasn’t as much about the money he embezzled. It was the deceit it was predicated upon.

“I realize it’s cliché but you need to forget about him and move on. Maybe you could start with your perfect high school boyfriend,” Beth said, moving to the next stall. “He might be available.”

“Are you searching for the perfect man?” the jade vendor behind the counter asked. He had an Australian accent and pale grey eyes disconcerting in their intensity.

Beth pointed at Ivy. “Her, not me. She’s—well, she used to be—a hopeless romantic.”

The vendor gave Ivy a speculative look before lifting up a simple silver chain with a green jade amulet hanging from it. “If you truly want to find this elusive perfect man, and restore your faith in true love, this necklace will be your good luck talisman.”

He tried to hand it to Ivy. She refused. “It’s beautiful—”

Leaning forward, he clasped her wrist and pressed the necklace into her palm. “It’s a gift.”

Ivy expected the jade to be cool to the touch, It heated her skin, sending an unexpected jolt of energy throughout her body. Pulling away, she dismissed the unusual sensation as a consequence of the double espresso she’d recently finished. All of this talk of magic was giving her the creeps.

“I couldn’t. It’s too much.” She tried to pass it back. He merely grinned.

“The first step to finding true love is acceptance,” he said, winking at Beth. “Take the necklace. Wear it with hope in your heart, and when you find the perfect man, everything will become clear.”

Book Description:
Aelryk’s kingdom is under attack by monsters conjured by a dark sorcerer. His only hope lies far to the west, where a powerful water elemental is rumored to dwell. Along the way, he joins forces with the Wild Elves, who were once his enemy. They alone can lead him through the dangers of the Wildlands. Together, they must journey to a mysterious land of eternal spring and return before the kingdom is overrun by evil.

Prologue

“I’m sorry, Yillmara,” the young elf maid said as she wept. “The child does not live.” She held the tiny bundle toward his mother, who slowly took him from the maid’s arms. Yillmara looked upon the lifeless face of her tiny son and wept softly. She closed her eyes and pressed him to her breast. After a moment, though still exhausted from the birth, she rose from her bed with her son in her arms.

“You mustn’t, my lady! You need to rest!” The maid pleaded with her and touched her arm as if to stop her, but Yillmara continued walking. She made her way from her rooms and stepped out into the light of the dawn. It was a cool spring morning, and the sound of the river danced throughout the forest that was home to Yillmara’s people, the Westerling Elves.
Yillmara approached the river slowly, earnestly. She trod lightly so not to offend the Spirit of the river. With her son still in her arms, she walked into the water and fell to her knees, begging for the life of her child. “River Spirit, hear my plea and grant my son his life. He deserves the chance to live, to grow, and to know the beauty of this forest. He should be given the chance to hear the music of the river.”

Slowly, she placed the lifeless body of her son into the water. Hoping for an answer from the River Spirit was foolish, she knew, but what matter was that compared to the life of her child. She covered her eyes and wept. As her tears hit the water, she heard a soft voice around her. It caressed her and consoled her grief. The River Spirit had come. The young mother’s weeping ceased, and she felt pure serenity. “I will gladly trade my life for his,” she said with all the strength of her heart.

With that assurance, the Spirit granted her request. The mother slid gently down into the river, and the child opened his sapphire eyes. The young maid came running to the river’s edge along with Yillmara’s life mate. The maid took the child from the river and rushed him inside to get him warm.

Though he knew his love’s body would fade into the river, Ryllak waded into the water to be near her. He could see her lying serenely in the water, her face peaceful as if sleeping. Reaching his arms out for her came naturally, but it was no use. He could no longer touch his beautiful Yillmara. She was gone forever.

The river had granted the child his life, and in time, the river would reclaim him.

About the Author:

Angela McCallister has always wanted to grow up to be someone who would never grow up, and lucky her, that’s exactly what she’s done. Nothing says adventurous more than being a career US Navy Sailor with an imagination wild enough to create stories and characters with a paranormal bite. A mother of five, she’s gained plenty of story ideas from her family as well as her military experience.
Angela is very laid-back and happy to try just about anything once, from skydiving, sailing, slacklining, Aikido, and even hang-gliding--as long as she doesn't have to subject anyone to her "singing" or make an appearance in a bikini. Like all authors, she's crazy for books, especially Romance, and will talk about them for days. She's currently stationed at Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu in California where she can be spoiled with some of the best weather in the country. With such platforms as an aircraft carrier, an amphibious ship, and an Aegis destroyer, and duty stations in Illinois, Washington, Hawaii, and California, her experiences vary widely. She's visited Thailand (a favorite), Bahrain, Dubai, Jebel Ali, Hong Kong, Guam, Canada, Mexico, and Singapore. She's a member of RWA San Diego, From the Heart Romance Writers, and Rose City Romance Writers and especially loves to hear from and meet readers and fellow authors.

The importance of world building with Maria Hammarblad

The importance of world building
I am a creator of worlds. Sounds cool, doesn’t it? To some extent, every fiction writer is a creator of worlds, but this part of drafting a story is extra important when it comes to science fiction and fantasy. The world has to work. All the details might not be in the story, but if the writer doesn’t know basic facts about the world, readers will feel something’s missing.
If the world isn’t believable, the entire story fails. If it’s real enough for readers’ imagination to take them there, the story and the characters have a solid foundation.
The first time someone asked me how I build my worlds I answered, “Uuh.” For me, the world isn’t a separate thing from the story. The world, the storyline, and the characters develop together, and each is dependent on the others. They take shape as I write and re-write.
The environment has to match the characters’ motivation. What they do or don’t do will be connected to the world they live in, it’s challenges, and benefits.
What do they eat, and why? Where do they get the food? Does someone grow it, build it in a lab, or catch it on a desolate planet? How is it transported? Who decides who works with what? How do people stay clean? How do they clean their clothes? Are there practical considerations to their buildings? There are a million or so questions, and the answers must be feasible.
When it comes to my new novella Shadow of a Man, it is number XII in a series of books written by different authors, but set in the same world. The stories are centered on a dilapidated space station – Borealis – and the time is distant future. This posed a new and exciting challenge, because the world was already created and well established.
Readers who enter Borealis through my story must feel at home with it, and readers who have gone through the entire series must recognize themselves and feel comfortable. I read the preceding stories several times, wanting to pick up details I could refer to, so the audience will know my Borealis is the same as Jay Morgan’s or Stephanie Burkhart’s.
My publisher also created a “Borealis bible.” It contains important details such as recurring characters, names of foods, curses, planets, weapons, stores, pets, you name it. This attention to detail makes it possible for a large number of writers to craft widely different stories – some are humorous, some thrilling, and some romantic – and still allow a sense of continuity. This is what world building is all about.

Shadow of a ManBorealis, number XIMaria Hammarblad
Genre: Sci-fi romance (non erotic)
Publisher: Desert Breeze PublishingDate of publication: October 11, 2013
ISBN:ASIN:
Number of pages: 60Word Count: 19,000
Formats available: E-book
Book Description:
There might be a place Theresa fears more than Borealis, but she can't think of one. The old and decrepit station houses all sorts of cruelty, and to make it better, this is where her husband Dominic was imprisoned, drugged, and tortured. He returned a mere shadow of his old self, scarred by abuse and Uudon withdrawal.
Borealis is the last place Theresa wants to go, and the only one she can't escape. Dominic's apparent madness does nothing to alleviate her fears. Her once sweet husband has turned into a womanizing monster, and will destroy anyone who gets in her way.
Geo, her faithful and all too handsome bodyguard, appears to be the only one on her side. He once helped rescue Dominic, and pays for the insurrection with a lifetime on the run. This might be a situation not even he can handle, and Theresa fears none of them will make it out alive.
About the Author :
Born in Sweden in the early 1970's, Maria showed a large interest for books at an early age. Even before she was able to read or write, she made her mom staple papers together into booklets she filled with drawings of suns and planets. She proudly declared them, "The Sun Book." They were all about the sun. She also claimed, to her mother's horror, that her being on Earth was a big mistake and that her alien family would come and bring her home at any moment. This never happened, but both the interest in space and the passion for bookmaking stayed with her.
As an adult Maria's creativity got an outlet through playing bass in a number of rock bands, and through writing technical manuals and making web pages for various companies and organizations. She did write drafts for a few novels, but the storytelling muse was mostly satisfied through role playing online on Myspace. It was here, while writing stories together with people from around the globe, she stumbled onto Mike. They started talking out of character, and she moved over to Florida to him late 2008. Today the two are married and live in the Tampa Bay area with three rescue dogs.
Besides writing and playing bass, Maria enjoys driving off-road, archery, and Tameshigiri.

Hot Halloween Heroes Giveaway Hop!

Supernatural Bad Boys- The Ultimate Thrill by Roxanne Rhoads
I think most women are programmed to be attracted to the bad boy, the broken boy, the dangerous boy- and who portrays the bad boy better than a supernatural boy?
Supernatural bad boys give a danger craving lady the thrill of a lifetime. They are the epitome of the bad boy stereotype with the added bonus real danger, supernatural strength and paranormal powers.
Plus they may have lived for a really long time so some girls may get their daddy issues covered along with that craving for the bad boy because let’s face it a guy that’s lived for decades, centuries possibly, should have infinite wisdom and the extreme added bonus of really knowing how to please to a woman sexually.
If he doesn’t after all that time then he’s an idiot. If he’s a vampire someone should stake him. Immediately. That way no other woman falls prey to the possibility of a paranormal paramour with promises of passion and pleasure only to be disappointed.
We get enough of that in real life.
That’s why we love our paranormal romances and urban fantasy books so much. The men are gorgeous, strong, dangerous and delicious.
And they want us- normal, plain, human woman that finally can light that spark inside them that’s been missing for so long.
We get to fix their brokenness, tame their bad boy ways, all while being swooped up into supernaturally strong, muscle bulging arms and carried off to beds where we are shown unimaginable pleasure than no mere mortal could ever offer.
Ultimate fantasy right?
Seems so for many of us right now. Nothing’s hotter than supernatural sex with the ultimate bad boys.
I know I can’t get enough. I love to read about the paranormal hotties as well as write about them.
My Halloween novella A Halloween to Remember (eXcessica) features Adena, a young woman hoping to someday meet the man of her dreams. When she encounters Dimitri at her friend Chrissy’s wild Halloween party she doesn’t believe she has a ghost of a chance with him until they get to know each other a little better and Adena realizes he may be the man she’s been hoping for. Too bad the next morning Adena wakes up alone- in a small cemetery behind the house. Halloween magic brought them together but will it be strong enough to keep them together?
It’s a fun filled paranormal erotic romance- heavy on the erotic. No vampires but there’s plenty of magick in the air.
(A Halloween to Remember also appears in the Paranormal Pleasures collection)
If vampires are what you crave my novella Eternal Desire (Eternal Press) is set in New Orleans during Halloween. LizBeth, a paranormal researcher, is searching for the shadowy vampire that haunts her dreams. Instead of finding him she encounters a handsome stranger that may finally be the one man that can take her mind off the vampire. As Halloween grows closer LizBeth finds herself torn between a shadow and a stranger not knowing who to choose. The magic of Halloween may help her decide once the clock strikes midnight and spirits walk freely in the flesh.
In  Hex and the Single Witch (also set during Halloween) features a human and vampire vying for witch Anwyn’s heart. From the beginning my goal was that Galen, the vampire, supernatural hottie extraordinaire would have Anwyn and there would be no love triangle. Then Mike Malone decided otherwise and ended up shoving his way into the book as not only a main character but as a love interest for Anwyn.  A romantic story line turned into a steamy love triangle. Now it’s human versus vampire to win the heart of a witch. Who do you think will win?

You have the chance to win an ecopy of Hex and the Single Witch and Paranormal Pleasures or a fun filled prize pack full of book swag from authors that love their heroes and bad boys.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

This hop is run by Felicity Heaton and Indie Romance Books and will run from October 29th to November 3rd 2013. This giveaway hop celebrates the paranormal heroes, whether they’re incubi, vampires and werewolves, angels and demons, gods and goddesses or any number of sexy shifters and other hot paranormal creatures.

Laurie spent most of her life in the Northeastern United States and in Western Europe. She now lives in San Antonio, Texas, with her son and Dalmatian duo, Domino and Rambo.  Desperate to escape the heat, she lives vicariously through Mica and her Primani by setting their adventures in the mountain coolness of New England and the rainy days of London. Before throwing caution to the wind and diving into a writing career, Laurie dedicated 20 years to her country by serving in the United States Air Force. Much of her time was spent around men with guns and cool toys...this explains her obsession with both.

Guest blog and Giveaway with Charles O'Keefe

Music is a big part of my life, I go to many concerts every year, I play piano, I listen to music whenever I’m driving and so when I wrote a book music had to be a big part of it. Aside from weaving songs into the text I also tried hard to have the song mean something to the scene it’s used in and to the character who hears it. So with all that in mind I give you the soundtrack to my second novel, Killer on the Road. If these songs mean something to you, let me know! I always enjoy hearing from like-minded people.
1.     Medley: Aquarius/Leth the Sunshine in – The Fifth Dimension2.     Bad Moon Rising – C.C.R.3.     Uptown Girl – Billy Joel4.     Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata5.     Richard Wagner’s The Ride of the Valkyries6.     Imagine – John Lennon7.     Eye in the Sky – The Allan Parsons Project8.     Rooms On Fire – Stevie Knicks9.     Real – William Shatner10.   John Newton’s Amazing Grace 11.  The Times They Are A-Changin’ – Bob Dylan12.  All Through The Night – Cyndi Lauper13.  Riders of the Storm – The Doors14.  Hey Jude – The Beatles
This time I was lucky that every song I wanted to keep in the book stayed. Also you’ll note that this time I choose two pieces of classical music, they fit the scene in the book well and I thought it was a nice touch.  With the classical pieces (and “Amazing Grace”) the reader has the freedom of listening to their own favourite singer/performer play them rather than ones I picked.
As for the other songs, “Riders of the Storm” is the theme for the main villain Donald (as he’s literally a “Killer on the road”). The final tune, “Hey Jude” is not only about Joseph’s sad feelings but also for Jude (a black cat) in the book who happens to be my pet in real life (and yes I do sing “Hey Jude” to him sometimes for fun J).

Book Description:
Joseph O’Reily is still adjusting to the lifestyle and the dangers that come with being a new vampire. He and Cassandra recently fought to the death with Cassandra’s estranged husband John Snow, and now Joseph has experienced his first ménage a trios, as only a vampire can. As if all of this was not complicated enough, he and Cassandra have been tasked with hunting down and killing a rogue vampire, Donald Rathmore.
Another of John Snow’s creations, Donald is an evil misogynistic killer in his own right. Donald has no interest in avenging his creator’s death, but killing Cassandra is at the top of his list.
While Donald continues his murderous spree, Joseph and Cassandra always seem to be one step behind him. The chase is further complicated as they encounter other vampires and learn more about the mysterious nature of the Vampire Council and the coming war between good and evil.
Joseph is only now beginning to trust Cassandra, and this trust will be shaken when he discovers she has even more secrets than he imagined. Her idea of justice and morality is at complete odds with his own. Despite all his powers and growing skill, Joseph is tested physically as a vampire and emotionally by Cassandra. This time the answers and challenges may be too much for the young vampire to handle.

Blood, Sex and Magic – Getting Bound with author K.A. M’Lady

What would any ritual be without the three?  Throughout time blood has been a prerequisite for a circle of power.  Blood was the source to the soul.  Sign your name and you’d seal your fate.  Bathe in it, drink it or bottle it and you’ve captured the essence – the magic – of your friends and your foes.
Early societies believed that the world itself was created through the act of sex between the gods.  That the power of release, if immense enough, could create potions and spells.
Perhaps however, it is love that is the true magic that closes the circle.  It is the be-all, end-all need of the lovelorn that has created countless superstitions, spells and madness throughout time for the multifarious.  Whether good or bad, the numbers don’t lie, three-times lucky, or trice the fool, a circle once made has no beginning and no end.  And love, once found settles deep – it’s in the blood – like magic.  It binds you and you’re powerless to stop it.

Release Day Blitz The Hag of the Wind by Laura J. Underwood

About the characters in The Hag of the Wind

Ginny and Manus are not new characters to most of my readers.  They first appeared in "The Bargain," the leading short story in Marion Zimmer Bradley's Sword and Sorceress 14.  Marion was in many ways, my literary mother, and she seemed to adore their adventures because she bought two more for Sword and Sorceress and one for the magazine.  In some ways, it was writing for the Sword and Sorceress series that gave birth to these two.  Marion was always looking for interesting characters, as well as women who could stand on their own two feet, so I tried to write a tale in which a woman who just wants a little peace and quiet finds her life constantly interrupted by the machinations of a spirit who happens to also have been her mentor in life.  The problem was that the spirit had gotten himself into a bit of a pickle by making a bargain with a creature of the shadow worlds, and while Ginny could have let him pay the price (it would certainly have gotten him out of her hair), she knew that she owed him for setting her free of her own life.

Ginny Ni’Cooley just wants a peaceful, quiet life.  But quiet is hard to maintain when one’s mentor is a ghost who died a lush and a lech.  And peace isn’t to be found when the locals expect their local mageborn to banish monsters and help infertile couples conceive.

It’s that last bit that is posing the most trouble for Ginny of late.  Marman the pig-herder--once an unwelcome suitor--now wants Ginny to help him and his wife conceive, and doesn’t believe her when she says it’s beyond her powers.

When the couple try to solve their problem on their own, they manage to unleash a demon imprisoned years ago.  Now, their actions have placed all of Connorscroft in danger and no matter how much peace and quiet Ginny wants, she’s got to find a way to defeat the demon before it destroys her village, the villagers and makes good on its threat to kill her.
