Interview, Excerpt and Giveaway Mercy by Jan Doffey

ISBN: 9781622663347
Book Description:
Julia Klein’s life has begun to unravel—her daughter Amy has been suspended from school, Julia is about to lose her job, and her boyfriend Garrett is being transferred thousands of miles away.
Overwhelmed, she and Amy leave for a weekend at a rambling old colonial inn. Julia never suspects that Garrett, desperate to find a way to keep Julia in his life, has decided to surprise her by joining them. Nor does she expect her daughter to befriend a mischievous ghost...or that she herself would be possessed by the malevolent spirit of a long-dead mother.
As a dark secret emerges, Julia, Amy, and Garrett find themselves pitted in a fight for survival against a savage presence that intends to resurrect/repeat/relive a horrible crime committed two centuries ago. And this time, Amy and Julia will be the victims.

Q. What inspired you to become an author?
We’ve always been writers and readers! Nikoo used to write stories for her grade school friends. After high school, being very good at math and sciences, she was encouraged to go to engineering school. After all, that was where the JOBS were. So she did…and tucked away her love of writing (in a safe spot) in favor of her immediate responsibilities. Later on, writing took a backseat to paying a mortgage and raising a family. She never lost her love of storytelling, though.
Jim wrote poetry and ‘007’ skits for the other kids in the neighborhood. He later became an English major and at least tried to stay in touch with his desire to write. In fact, after finishing college he wrote a screenplay that almost sold to Robert Redford’s production company. But real life again interfered with dreams as he pursued a career in a submarine shipyard before going back to school and getting his PhD some ten years later.
Q. Why did you decide to write together?
After our younger son successfully came through heart surgery as an infant, we found ourselves reassessing our lives and our goals. We have always been storytellers and readers, and we decided to try writing a short story together. That story, a prizewinner in a national writing contest, was the first step. The next step, naturally, was a full-length historical novel!
Q. You are somewhat unique in that you are a married writing team. How well does that work for you, and what are the pluses and minuses?
We can no longer even imagine writing separately. In our nonfiction book, Marriage of Minds: Collaborative Fiction Writing, we talk about the difficulties and the delights of working together, but we can tell you that the joys outweigh the hardships by a mile…at least for us. To sum it up, everything comes down to our ability to separate the work from the person. We came to the realization early on that just because we don’t like a passage or a paragraph or a chapter that our partner wrote, that doesn’t mean we don’t like THEM. Another thing that has made our writing career possible is that we had a solid foundation in our marriage (thirteen years!) before we started collaborating on our fiction.
Q. What is the biggest challenge and the biggest pleasure about writing as a team? Do you each have a particular area of specialty in the writing?
Two heads being better than one should be the theme song for every collaborative writing team. You are never alone. You always have someone to talk over your ideas with. But of course, having two heads doesn’t necessarily mean that you have twice the brain… or that you can write twice as fast. Also, feeding times are difficult…bathroom times are hell.
The biggest pleasure that we’ve found in the actual act of writing is the feeling of complementing each other. While we don’t really have specialty areas, Nikoo could be characterized as the screenwriter type (she loves writing dialogue), and Jim is more the poet type (he loves imagery and language, descriptive passages… he also loves sleeping in late, long walks on the beach, old movies… anything to keep from working.)
Q. Do you write in different genres?
We do. Our choice of historical romance was simple… Jim had the historical information from his dissertation work and his PhD, and Nikoo had the stories. And we’re both fervent believers in satisfying endings! So May McGoldrick was born.
After more than a dozen historical romances under our belt, we pursued romantic suspense and suspense thrillers under the name Jan Coffey.
Our decision to write nonfiction grew out of our desire to help other writers who might be looking for an alternative way to successfully tell their stories. Also, we’re teachers, so many of our handouts and exercises went into our Step Write Up collection.
We also write young adult under both names.
Q. How did you come up with the story for Mercy? Is the book, the characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?
For many years we lived in Newport, Rhode Island. Our house was an early nineteenth-century home that was rumored to be haunted by two sisters—very friendly ghosts. During our years living there, we experienced some strange things. There were many occasions when our dog would wag his tail and bark excitedly at an empty doorway. Also, our toddler would smile and wave his hand at the same invisible people that we couldn’t see. Doors closed on their own. There were creaks in the old plank floors after we go to bed. On one occasion, Nikoo was baking in the kitchen when a cold hand touched her face. She turned to find the baby monitor had gone off. Running upstairs, she found our son was choking in his crib. To this day, we credit the sisters for saving our child’s life.
An old seaport town, Newport is famous for the ghosts of pirates and seamen and the families that they were left behind. There are stories of executed buccaneers being buried on the shore below the high tide line so the souls would never rest as the waves washed across the sands. There are so many ghost stories about the historical homes on the island.
Our novella Mercy was pieced together from many of those stories. An inn on the bluffs, a widow’s walk on a house on another corner of the island, an angry ghost who unsettled every occupant of the home she haunted. Isn’t this the way all stories are born?
Q. Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?
We start with a working title. The final book title always goes through a constant revision because the two of us have to agree. That often takes some negotiating before deciding on the final name. Of course, there have been many instances when the marketing departments at our publishers have changed the title in the eleventh hour. We still get letters from fans saying, “Why can’t I find a copy of the novel Jeweled Cup that was advertised in the back of one of your earlier works?” Jeweled Cup became Flame. And that is another ghost story, but set in the Scottish highlands…
Q. Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?
We have been working on Road Kill (working title) about a small-town Connecticut photographer that discovers crime scene photos are mixed in with her work—pictures of a slayings that have not yet been discovered. As the result, she becomes the center of a police investigation and the target of a killer’s obsession.
We love to hear from our readers. So please stay in touch.

Excerpt: Starting up the stairs, Garrett tried to bury the image of a teary Julia when she’d closed the door on him yesterday after he’d arrived at her house. She’d been too upset to talk.He shivered as a gust of cold air rushed down the stairwell, slapping him in the face. Garrett hesitated, startled by the sharpness of it. At the top of the steps, a shadow moved, catching his eye. But when he reached the second floor landing, he was surprised to see no one there and no open window.Doors were visible on both sides of the well-lit hallway. A light flickered behind him. Then, halfway down, a bulb buzzed, blazed intensely, and burned out. He stopped dead. A tall woman in a long, gray dress was standing beneath the darkened light, glaring at him.Something in her face kept him from looking away. Her eyes burned with emotion. Bitterness. Anger. Hatred. The hairs on his neck rose when she started in his direction. She moved toward him, filling the narrow hallway.Garrett turned to make room for her, shuffling his overnight bag from one shoulder to the other, but as he did, his room key dropped to the floor. When he bent down to retrieve it, chilled air, oppressive and gray, hit him like a wave.He froze. He’d felt this sensation once before, diving with a film crew at the raising of a sunken slave ship. It was in the ship’s cargo hold. It was a feeling so icy, so overwhelming, that it went straight through him, infusing his bones, numbing him. With it came a sudden memory of some forgotten nightmare—a barren winter field, the gaping black hole of a bottomless grave. He could almost taste the dank odor of death.Cold panic washed through him. She was on him, all around him. He could feel the woman’s fury. Snatching the key, he straightened up.She was gone.Garrett looked up and down the hallway. He was alone. No door had opened or closed. The woman had disappeared. He was in a colonial inn in Newport, he thought. Of course it could be haunted. He ran a hand over his face. Key in hand, he continued down the hall. By the burned-out light, he saw a set of stairs going up to the third floor. Peering up, he saw the chain across the steps with a sign. ‘Private Residence’. It was dark beyond.Julia had no idea that he was coming. He'd been on the phone with her this afternoon, and they'd even sent texts back and forth a couple of times tonight. He had given her no inkling that he was already on his way to Newport. Yesterday, he’d been shut out. By showing up here today, he wanted to show Julia that the promotion and the move didn’t change the way he felt. He wanted to be part of their life. His room was just beyond Julia’s. With one last look down the hall, he turned the key in his door and entered the dark room. A gust of autumn wind blew in from an open window, rattling a picture frame on the wall and causing the gauze curtains to stand straight out like ghostly wings against the ceiling.Standing inside the door, Garrett sensed that he was not alone in the room. He could feel the eyes of someone watching him. Hating him.He switched on a lamp by the door. Yellow light bathed the room, throwing deep shadows into dark corners. The door slammed and Garrett jumped, his eyes sweeping the room. The wind eased, and the sheers fell calmly against the sills. No one else was there."Halloween, a wicked draft, and exhaustion," he muttered. “Get a grip.”The temperature had dropped considerably since he left Boston this afternoon. He closed the window and glanced around at the furnishings. Four-poster bed. The usual dressers and tables. Two reading chairs by the window. Exposed ceiling rafters of rough-hewn timber completed the colonial feel of the room. At one end, the bathroom. At the other end, a door that he knew must lead into Julia and Amy's room.He checked his phone. The last text from Julia had come a few minutes after seven. They were walking into the theater to see a movie. Almost two hours ago.His eye was drawn to Julia's door. He walked over and unbolted the latch, but it was locked from the other side.He stopped, hearing faint voices. Snatches of conversation.Go…chair…I want to stay…Telling you…Go.A woman and a child's voice. But the woman didn’t sound like Julia. And it couldn’t have been Amy. For a second, he wondered if the receptionist downstairs had put him in the wrong room."Julia?" he called, pressing his palm flat against the door. The wood felt like ice.The voices stopped.“Julia?”The knob turned from the other side, but it didn't open. Suddenly, a heavy bang rattled the door.Shocked, he jumped back. Over and over, the doorframe shook."Unlock it, Julia," he called. As suddenly as it started, it stopped, and the sound of scratching began. Someone was sitting on the floor on the other side, clawing at the door. Then, as he stared, long lines of claw marks started to show through the paint. Garrett took another step back.“This isn’t happening,” he said, feeling the hackles rise on his neck.Just as the words left his mouth, the scratching stopped. Even as he stared, the claw marks disappeared. The sound of moaning came through the door. A woman crying.Help me.Julia.

A Halloween Hoax- No Shelter From Darkness by Mark D Evans

The following letter was sent in to us by an anonymous source. He/she explains that the letter is a copy of one sent in to a major national paper (for whom the source likely works) by a Mr James Gibson of York. James Gibson claimed the letter was found hidden away in the belongings of his late mother, Mary Gibson, whose maiden name was the Mary Connell of the addressee.Having all the hallmarks of a simple hoax, the source claims the newspaper had a test done and verified that the age of the paper and ink matched the date of the letter. An elaborate Halloween Hoax decades in the making or the real deal? You decide.Incidentally, the source claims this is a copy because the original mysteriously disappeared before the paper could print it.
Beth Wade14 Moravian StreetBethnal GreenLondonMary Connell25 Dew AvenueKellythorpeJuly 2nd, 1942Dear Mary, I’m going to break the rules. You’re the only one who knows about me and I can’t stand writing to you and you to me without acknowledging it. That morning we spoke of what I was—what I am—I felt so liberated. For you to disappear literally the very same day that I could be open with you, well, I don’t mean to sound childish, but it simply wasn’t fair. It isn’t fair. The truth is, even if there wasn’t a war on, I’m not sure how likely it would be that I’d be able to come visit. My dad, well, he’s become very protective. It’s great in a way, but at the same time it can feel a bit claustrophobic. And I can’t talk to him, at least not like I can talk to you. You’re my best friend, and even though my dad’s supposed to be the expert, I’m sure you would probably understand more about what I’m going through than he ever could. I could never tell him so candidly about what it’s like to wake up that one morning every week and know, to feel the need set in. I could certainly never tell him that when that morning comes, I no longer feel only shame and sadness. I could never tell him like I’m telling you now that when that morning arrives, I feel almost giddy. I’m starting to look forward to it, especially now that I’m self-sufficient. Oh, of course. You don’t know that yet, do you. You see, Mary, there’s so much that has happened that I’m not allowed to talk about. But promise me you’ll read this letter and then burn it. I’m no longer given blood, Mary. I hunt for it. Please, don’t be alarmed. I hunt only animals and have never even thought of harming a human. Not consciously, at least. But it was a comedy of errors at first. I learnt to hunt quickly, and truth be told catching an animal—normally foxes—I’ve never found that hard. It’s the other bit I had difficulty with. I spent hunt after hunt with some animal in my arms, trying to kick itself free while I tried to overcome the repulsion of biting through its fur and into its neck. Finally, when I let my craving grow to overcome that repulsion and I pressed my bared fangs into a fox’s hide, its fur tickled my nose and I sneezed and the fox ran away. But now, when I wake up on that morning and I feel that craving somewhere deep inside of me, I smile. I know I’m justified, then, in prowling the park in the black of night, feeling the grass and soil between my toes, balancing on high branches, waiting to pounce and chase down another week’s meal. And there’s no longer hesitation before my fangs sink deep into the neck of whatever beast I’ve caught and drain it dry of it’s warm, metallic blood. The nights are most certainly my favourite time, now. The days? They’re getting harder. I have to wear my sunglasses so much these days, and I wonder how long it will be before I can’t [editor’s note: this sentence abruptly stops here.] Mary, Dad’s just got home. I have to hide this letter. He’d kill me if I knew I was talking about this to you, let alone put it in a letter. Please, please burn this after you’ve read it. You know it’s for your own sake more than it is for mine. I miss you. Beth.

“Her hands began to shake as she looked down wide-eyed at the blood-soaked cotton that covered her.”
London emerges from the Blitz, and every corner of the city bears the scars. In the East End—a corner fairing worse than most—thirteen year-old Beth Wade endures this new way of life with her adoptive family. She also suffers the prejudice against her appearance, an abiding loneliness and now the trials of adolescence. But with this new burden comes a persisting fatigue and an unquenchable thirst that ultimately steals her into unconsciousness . . .
What happens next is the start of something Beth will fear more than the war itself. She begins to change in ways that can’t be explained by her coming-of-age, none more frightening than her need to consume blood. The family who took her in and the former best friend who’s taken refuge in their house can never know. Aware of the danger she poses to everyone around her, Beth has never felt more alone. But someone else knows Beth’s secret . . . someone who understands just how different she really is. He alone can decrypt her past and explain her future. But he’s been sworn to destroy her kind, and as Beth grows ever more dangerous, he’s forced to take sides.
Can Beth keep all of the secrets? Can she trust a man sworn to kill her? And can she stop the vampire within from taking her humanity?

MARK D. EVANS was born near London, England. He graduated university with a degree in something not even remotely connected with writing and went on to become a successful consultant. Then he threw it all away to chase his dream of being an author, via a considerable amount of travelling. Today, his life largely resembles that of a nomad, and he can currently be found typing away in a tiny flat in north London, sustained by coffee.
He is the author of two short stories, one of which made it into a Kindle Top Ten.
His latest work is his debut novel, No Shelter from Darkness, which is the first book in his series, The Cruentus Saga.

Book Description:
“What gives you a thrill Kristen?”
I knew that giving in to Vincent Sorenson was a risk, but it was one I was willing to take. I had hidden my heart for so long and for the first time in a long time, Vincent was close to breaking down the walls.
When a trip to Vincent’s exclusive private island reveals the real Vincent underneath the layers of suave nonchalance, I thought we were close to the start of something special.
Just when things were looking up for us, I would discover the one secret that Vincent never intended for me to find.
Excerpt:
Previously: Vincent is calling Kristen over video chat while he is away on a business trip.
His dark eyes were scanning my surroundings. “You’ve got a nice bedroom. I like the stuffed animal in the background.”
I laughed. I’d seen it so often, I’d forgotten it was there. I got up from the desk and went to retrieve the stuffed bird from my bed to give Vincent a better look at it. And an explanation for why a grown woman in her mid-twenties had a kid’s toy.
“I also like those shorts,” he said. “I couldn’t agree more.”
I turned back to Vincent. “What do you mean?”
“It says ‘juicy’ on the back.”
“Oh God.” My face heated. “I didn’t have anything else to wear. I got these when I was in high school. A lot of girls wore them at the time and I caved to peer pressure. I should’ve thrown them out.”
He grinned. “I’m glad you didn’t. Suits you well.”
Hoping to move on to a less embarrassing topic, I picked up my bird and brought it back to the desk. “On the other hand, I’m never going to throw this out.”
“Why do you have a plush penguin?”
I squeezed the soft rainbow beak, posing its adorable face for Vincent. “It’s a puffin. It looks like the offspring of a penguin and a parrot if they ever mated. I used to be obsessed with them when I was like five. My parents got me this during a trip to the museum. That was back when I had a better relationship with them. I’m not as into puffins now but this guy still has a lot of sentimental value.”
“I can see why you like it. It’s cute.”
“Well I’m glad you and Mr. Waddles get along.” I wiggled its nubby feet at Vincent. “His approval of you means a lot to me.”
Vincent smiled in a way that was both charming and cute. If only I had a plush version of him to snuggle with on nights when he was away on business.
“Spunky on the outside, soft on the inside. You’re quite the combination.”
He continued as if another thought just occurred to him. “I know I’ve said this before. But thinking about you is making it difficult to concentrate on business. I don’t expect you to understand but it’s hard to focus on work when you’ve got an erection.”
“Well. . . I don’t know what to say.” I really didn’t because I’d never had an erection before but I could at least imagine the dilemma. I offered the first suggestion that came to mind.
“Why don’t you just watch porn like a regular guy?”
His brows knotted and his lips frowned. “Wouldn’t work. You make porn look bad.” He opened his mouth to say something further but closed his eyes and sighed deeply instead.
“Something’s bothering you. What’s wrong?” I asked.
His elbow on the desk, he ran a hand through his wavy hair but stopped halfway so that he rested the side of his head in his palm. He looked weary. “I wished we didn’t have sex.”
Nerves shot through my system and my grip on Mr. Waddles tightened. Why would he say such a terrible thing? Was it because I dumped my baggage on him and now he regretted being involved with me?
“What? Why?”
“Cause it made me want you more. I can’t stop thinking about it. You in a blindfold. Your gorgeous body. . . It’s so damn frustrating being so far away from you.”
Relief washed over me like a cold shower in this summer weather. “You scared me for a second there. I thought you were going to say you didn’t like the sex.”
“I don’t like how much I liked it. I’m dangerously close to cutting this trip short to come back to Manhattan. I’m not sure how much longer I can go. I think I might be addicted to you.”
I felt his pain. Over the past two days, I’d constantly thought about him and our multiple sex sessions at his place. It had been distracting—something I welcomed given the drama of my ex lurking in the background; Vincent was a much needed diversion. But most of all, it made me realize how far I’d fallen for him in such a short time. It was frightening and thrilling.
Knowing he was feeling the same way about me made it less frightening.
I had an idea.
“Maybe this will help,” I said as I placed Mr. Waddles on the far end of the desk away from me. I released my hair from its ponytail and let my locks drape around my shoulders. I shook my head to give my hair the voluminous and sexy look I’d seen in commercials. Then I smiled seductively at him.
He straightened in his chair. “You have my attention.”
I undid the top button of my shirt then the next two, enticing him with a view of my black bra beneath and an eyeful of scandalous cleavage. The nurturing side of me wanted to heal his pain.
“Mmmm,” he murmured.
“Like what you see?” I teased. His desire for me always gave me a thrill.
He nodded slowly. “I want to see more.”

Interview, Giveaway and Excerpt Martuk ... the Holy by Jonathan Winn

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
After growing up in a teeny tiny small town in Washington State, I graduated high school and immediately escaped for the sun and palm trees of Los Angeles. But ten years later, tired of sun and palm trees and traffic, I traded all that in for the controlled chaos of New York City where I lived for another twenty. That being said, my life is pretty quiet. Just basically me, my laptop, and my two dogs. When it comes to writing in this genre, I, like most writers, tend to write what I like to read. Plus this story and this character kinda showed up and forced me to sit at the keyboard, and you just don't argue with that. :)
Please tell us about your latest release.
Martuk ... the Holy is my debut novel. It's about an immortal man living in modern-day Paris who, after being haunted -- sometimes violently -- by ghosts, both literally and from his past, decides to exorcise himself by revisiting the Why of who he is, warts and all. So, from the ancient city of Uruk one thousand years before Christ and the Priests in red and gold of the Temple to the madness of Jerusalem in first-century Palestine, we watch him strut and stumble, rise and fall, act with kindness and lash out with blood-thirsty vengeance, all while haunted by a Darkness that threatens to eat him alive.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
The Wounded King, who Martuk meets in Uruk. He wasn't a difficult character to write, per se. He was just a heartbreaking character to write. I kept trying to bring light and life and happiness to him, but the situation he found himself in just wouldn't allow it. Granted, the revenge Martuk takes on those who hurt the King was delicious to write. But, still, I wish I could have brought a bit of hope to him. Now that I think about it, though, I did, in the end, crafting a wonderful Before Tale in his own book, The Wounded King, the first in The Martuk Series, an ongoing collection of short fiction based on Martuk ... the Holy. In that, I was able to create a King before his life was ruined.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
Ah, Ruth and Jacob, who Martuk meets in first-century Jerusalem. They weren't planned, they kinda just showed up, and I let them do their thing and did my darndest to keep up. Those chapters, even if some of the situations were difficult, were incredibly easy to write.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I know enough to know that whatever plans I lay will definitely be up-ended by even better plans I stumble into while writing. So, it's good to have a fairly strong idea of what's going on the page as long as you don't get so tied to it that you refuse those new, better ideas you're inevitably going to have.
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
In researching Martuk, it was fascinating to learn that, in first-century Palestine, there had been many, many messiahs before Jesus. He was, truly, one of many who arrived, whipped the crowds into a frenzy, and then died at the hands of the Jews in the Temple and the Romans. In researching the sequel, Martuk ... the Holy: Proseuche, which I'm now writing, I discovered that Christianity actually went to war with itself, a battle that raged from the 2nd to the 5th centuries. There were several reasons for it, but the fact of the matter is, the Christianity we know here in the West wasn't decided -- the What of what Christians eventually believed, I mean -- until the 4th and 5th centuries. It's really a fascinating story, in and of itself.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
Yep, and any writer who says he doesn't is lying. :) But I deal with it in several ways. I'll either write through it, knowing what's going on the page will be deleted 'cause it's horrible. Or I'll switch to writing a screenplay or a teleplay or another book. And if that fails, I'll go and play tennis or come in and cook a meal that takes a bit of concentration. Usually, in doing one of those, I'll find the ideas coming back and then I get impatient because I'm stuck playing tennis or making this damn elaborate meal! LOL
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
I can not write without music blaring into my headphones. Seriously, it's the only thing that shuts up my very vocal inner critic. And I also tend to finish the last page of the last edit and then, quite literally, immediately begin the next book. But I may begin it and then give it a rest. Still, I have to always start a new book the minute after I finish the old.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
When a friend of mine who's a producer in LA read my first screenplay and said it was surprisingly good. She's not known for giving out compliments, so it was kinda huge.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?My dogs. Love 'em. I also play tennis and cook, sometimes, but my life really does revolve around either writing or doing research for writing or writing a new screenplay or TV show or whatever. It's what I love to do and I'm so very lucky it's the thing I get to devote my days to.
What can readers expect next from you?
As I mentioned, I'm writing Martuk ... the Holy: Proseuche, the sequel to Martuk ... the Holy, and that should be ready by the end of the year at the very latest. I'm also writing The Tall Priest, the fourth book in The Martuk Series, the collection of short fiction I also mentioned earlier.

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
“So, you’re immortal.”
The scratching of her pen stopped, the scribbled thoughts ending with a flourish. A most unpleasant sound, this scratching. The sound of judgment. Of a probing curiosity which cut to the quick. Unanswerable questions on my part coupled with a growing, quietly mocking disbelief on hers.
I was grateful for this pocket of silence.
She tossed the hair from her eyes and watched me with professional patience, legs crossed, her stiletto-clad foot dangling, the tip of her crimson pen resting against her claret-colored lips.
This was always a difficult moment.
"Yes."
“And how do you know you’re immortal, Mar. … “ She hesitated over my name, searching for it on her pad.
“Martuk,” I interrupted. “Just Martuk,” pronouncing this attempt at anonymity as in “too”. Or “two” with a hard “k” at the end. Martuk.
Her eyebrows arched as she waited.
“I just do."
“I see. Have you tried killing yourself?”
“Not recently."
“And how recently is not recently?” she asked, her pen mauling the pad with her thoughts.
I shrugged the question away and stared at my shoes, unwilling to count the hundreds of years since sharp steel pierced willing skin. All those tiresome, predictable failures. Cuts filled with glistening red before the flesh closed, the scars disappearing moments later.
“It’s pointless. I can’t die.”

Book Description:
In a crowded Left Bank cafe, an immortal man sits, the phantoms crawling near, the heat of their whispers stinging his cheek ...
and Martuk ... The Holy begins.
One thousand years before the birth of Christ, a golden god damns Martuk with a kiss. In a land ruled by a wounded king, life everlasting steals his mortality from the bottom of a golden cup. Finally, generations later, a Messiah who has the power to heal breaks under the weight of Martuk's demons, stumbling to his death defeated by darkness.
From his home in modern Paris, he writes, his memories lush, his words evocative. Revisiting his impossible life, he vents his rage and shares his loneliness. From bloody battles with a demon he cannot escape to the ghost of a beauty who haunts him still, this is his story.
This is Martuk ... The Holy.

Amazon BN Goodreads
Guest Blog: Thrills & Chills While Doing Laundry (Wait. What?)By Lindsey R. Loucks
Instead of taking one of the buses speeding through campus during my college career, I always walked, my gaze aimed at the ground for anything shiny and round. If I found treasure in the form of a quarter, it was well worth the few bumps on the head or rude comments I got from not looking where I was going. Like most college students, I was poor.
But I became a pretty successful quarter tracker, and when I’d find one, I’d add it to my carefully stacked pile with the hope I’d have enough to do laundry soon. With all that walking around campus, there were days when I came home smelling a tad ripe.
The washers and dryers were located on the basement floor of my apartment building, and let’s just say that going down there, alone, was the equivalent of walking into a dragon dungeon with my arms loaded with raw meat. That’s what it felt like anyway.
Storage cupboards took up the far wall that led from the stairs to the laundry area, each one about three feet long and three feet wide. Sometimes one of them would be open a crack. The single overhead light only cast a faint orange glow, deepening the shadows inside that open cupboard to an inky black.
Whenever I’d see one of those open cupboards, I’d stop in my tracks while my imagination tumbled over everything that could be lurking inside. Usually the things I imagined involved segmented legs, machetes, Brazilian poison dart frogs, porcelain dolls, or a combination of all of the above, just waiting to spring out.
My pulse racing, I’d give my laundry bag a squeeze and check to make sure I still had my quarters. Then, with my breath held, I’d race past the open cupboard, dump all my clothes into the washer, throw in some soap, push my quarters into the slots, start the machine, and sprint back out before I’d used up all the stored air in my lungs.
It was such a rush! It made laundry day pretty much the best day ever! Of course, I’ve always lived for that pump of adrenaline that fear gives me. I watch scary movies alone in the dark by myself on purpose. I guess I’m weird like that.
On one of my trips to the laundry room, my boyfriend’s brother went with me (I can’t remember why exactly, but I may have told him about the spooky basement). When he saw the wall of cupboards, his exact words were, “A serial killer stores his victims in these, huh?”
And that’s when I stopped doing laundry in that apartment building. Nah, just kidding. I still did. Remember that adrenaline rush thing I was talking about? Yep.
All of this was the fuel I needed to eventually write Haunted Chemistry. Who knew laundry could be so delightfully scary?
How about you? What’s the most interesting thing that’s happened to you while doing laundry? Have you ever done laundry in a particularly frightening place?
Excerpt:
“Uh, Alexis?”My name on his tongue sounds amazing, but I try not to notice. I turn, the bulk of my laundry bag holding the door open for me. “What?”He swallows and glances at his black boots. “It’s great to see you again.”I nod. It’s great to see him, too, but I’m not the one who didn’t show up for our date at the end of last semester and who vanished for an entire summer with no explanation. Maybe he forgot about our non-date, because he sure isn’t trying to explain himself. But why didn’t he call to tell me he wouldn’t be coming instead of making me wait for him?My bag bites its weight into my shoulder. When I shift it to the other one, the door creaks closed in Ian’s face. I wince. I didn’t mean for that to happen.“Well.” He frowns through the broken squares in the window. “See you.”“Yeah.” With a sigh, I watch him walk away. I’ve missed our group study sessions where we’d always sit next to each other and accidentally nudge each other’s knee or foot. I’ve missed how easy it is to be with him. I’ve missed him. He doesn’t seem like the type who wouldn’t call to say he couldn’t make it. But he didn’t.

Character Interview with Keeley Smith's Jack Thomas and Giveaway

Age:
500 and then some but who is counting? I know you are thinking I look better than you, it sucks but it comes with my element. (Grins) I look 17 and will look like this until I’m killed by some magical power or I fall over dead at 3000 years old.
Describe your features to someone who hasn’t met you:
I’m tall, some would say I’m good looking, I don’t see myself this way (shrugs his shoulders) I have brown hair and brown eyes, you know I look normal, really.
Favourite Book:
I don’t read all that much, I haven’t got the time what with kicking serious ass and eating/sleeping. If I did have the time to read I would love to read a book on someone’s life story.
Favourite food:
Fish and chips. You can’t beat it, slap on some salt and vinegar and it is a great meal!
Who would you like to play in the film of your life:
oooo, now it would have to be someone brilliant, because, well, my life is brilliant as you know. I think someone not too famous so it doesn’t take the lime light away from me so Tom Cruise is definitely out of the question. I don’t know. Ask a woman that question, it would be easier for her to answer.
What luxury item would you take with you on a desert island:
Eli, he would be able to use his power and find all the food and things. I’m not good with that stuff, I can use my element to see where we were...
What woman would you take with you:
Any woman that wanted to come (laughs) I like strong, independent women so as long as they are able to fight their own, they can come.
What would be your ideal date:
I’ve always wanted to go zorbing, it looks so much fun, get into a giant ball and throw yourself down a hill, that would be such a cool date!
What are you most proud of?
I guess I’m proud of that fact that I’ve come through death, literally, and lived for my family who couldn’t, their choice was taken away from them. It is still difficult to come to terms with what happened to them in 1612, but I’m proud of my strength and how I’m managing to move on in life.
And finally, if you weren’t a witch what job would you be doing?:
I don’t like the boring 9-5 jobs, but I don’t think anyone does (flashes an easy smile) so I would be doing something interesting, perhaps something like what Eli does with his gadgets, maybe I could do some guinea pigging of new computer games to see if they are good enough. I would like that kind of job!

As young witches, life is hard. If the commoners find out their secret, they will be killed. But Cora is lucky, she has her best friend Jack by her side.

20th August 1612
Cora and Jack are forced to face the reality of being a witch during these turbulent times, however they don’t know that their lives will become part of one of the most famous witch trials to have ever hit England. The Pendle Hill witch trials of 1612.

I've always loved reading, it is a common known fact that I pretty much demolish a book a day. Expensive hobby, but a great one! I've dabbled with writing since the day I could actually write. So, it was only fitting that I had my first book published when I was 15.
If I'm not writing you would generally find me reading, creating jewellery, trawling social networking sites and listening to music. I will pretty much listen to any kind of music but I have two favourites, country music which has been with me since I was a little toddler and I also love to listen to movie scores, especially when I'm writing!
I currently live in Yorkshire with my husband.

A Cassie Scott Mini-Story by Christine Amsden

A Cassie Scott Mini-Story
Last night, I was just about to close up and go home for the day when an old woman walked into my office with a cat carrier. Inside the carrier, a black cat hissed and yowled. I suppose I would have felt that way too, if someone had locked me inside a little cage. I felt instant sympathy for the cat. Not so much for the old lady.
“Cassandra Scot?” she asked.
“Cassie,” I corrected automatically. Only my parents called me Cassandra.
“I knew your grandparents.”
I tried not to groan. My grandparents had been highly respected sorcerers until they died in a lab explosion a few years back. I never knew what they had been working on, but since that day there has been a swirling vortex in the lab.
Don't ask – I really have no idea.
“Have we met?” I asked.
“Miranda Cleaver. Mrs. Cleaver.”
“Nice to meet you, Mrs. Cleaver.”
If she heard my sarcastic emphasis on the honorific, she didn't mention it.
“Your grandparents used to set wards in my house to keep the demons out,” Mrs. Cleaver said. “Since they've died, the wards have failed. There are now demons running amuck in my house, and Sylvie – my poor cat – has been possessed by the devil.”
“I... see.” What was I supposed to say? She had just walked past a sign proclaiming, “Cassie Scot: Normal Detective.”
“I read your web site,” Mrs. Cleaver said.
“Really? Did you see my list of services and exemptions?”
“Of course.”
“So what do you need?”
“An exorcism. I told you, Sylvie is possessed by the devil.”
I glanced again at the hissing cat, whose yellow eyes shone with very typical feline anger. “I don't do exorcisms. It was listed under exemptions.”
“But you're Cassandra Scot, aren't you?”
“Cassie.”
“Your parents are Edward ans Sheila Scot?”
“Yes.” I felt my face burning. Just because I had powerful sorcerers for parents, didn't mean I was one as well. Okay, so it wasn't just my parents – it was my grandparents, aunt, uncles, cousins, brothers, and sisters. Still, there had to be a second cousin out there somewhere without any magic at all.
Why couldn't people just read the sign?
“Well, then.” She sounded as if the whole matter were settled. She plunked the carrier on my desk and took a vacant chair in front. “I went to your father first. Your grandparents always told me to go to him if I needed anything after they were gone. Your father said you were ideally suited for this sort of work.”
“He did?” My dad wasn't above a practical joke, but this sounded more like something my brother would do. My brother, who looked more like Dad's twin that his son, thanks to Dad's egregious use of youthening potions.
“Nicolas,” I muttered under my breath. “This is war.”
“What's that, dear?”
“Why don't I take a quick look at the cat?”
“Of course, dear.” Mrs. Cleaver clearly had not expected any other result.
I opened the door to the cage, but carefully did not reach my hand inside. The cat stopped hissing. After a moment or two, it poked its nose outside the cage, sniffing the air. Then it stepped outside.
That's when I noticed how very pregnant Sylvie was.
“She needs to see a vet,” I said. “She's going to have kittens.”
“I know. Little demons. It never used to happen when your grandparents were alive.”
“I... see.” I seemed to be saying that a lot. “You know what? I think I'll need to keep her for a few days. I'll call you when she's free of the... demon.”
“You will?” Mrs. Cleaver's eyes shone with relief. Crazy or not, I knew I'd said the right thing. “How much will it cost? I don't have a lot of money.”
“Don't worry about it.”
“I really must pay you.” She dug through her beaded handbag, closing her fist around a bill, which she handed to me with the air of someone bestowing a treat on a young child. “Thank you so much.”
I watched in bemusement as she walked out the door, leaving me to deal with the pregnant cat. I figured I'd take Sylvie home to my sister, Juliana, a gifted healer. She had been begging our parents for a cat lately, anyway.
As soon as the door closed behind the old lady, I glanced at the bill she had pressed into my hands. A single dollar. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry.
At least my parents are rich.
“This is the last paranormal case I'm taking though,” I said to whoever might be listening.
Sylvie meowed. I think she knew I was kidding myself.

Short Version:
Award-winning author Christine Amsden has written stories since she was eight, always with a touch of the strange or unusual. She became a “serious” writer in 2003, after attending a boot camp with Orson Scott Card. She finished Touch of Fate shortly afterward, then penned The Immortality Virus, which won two awards.
Long Version:
Christine Amsden has been writing science fiction and fantasy for as long as she can remember. She loves to write and it is her dream that others will be inspired by this love and by her stories. Speculative fiction is fun, magical, and imaginative but great speculative fiction is about real people defining themselves through extraordinary situations. Christine writes primarily about people and it is in this way that she strives to make science fiction and fantasy meaningful for everyone.
At the age of 16, Christine was diagnosed with Stargardt’s Disease, a condition that effects the retina and causes a loss of central vision. She is now legally blind, but has not let this slow her down or get in the way of her dreams. (You can learn more here.)
In addition to writing, Christine teaches workshops on writing at Savvy Authors. She also does some freelance editing work.
Christine currently lives in the Kansas City area with her husband, Austin, who has been her biggest fan and the key to her success. They have two beautiful children, Drake and Celeste.

Of War Series Overview and Giveaway with Lisa Beth Darling

Of War Series Overview:
My name is Maggie, I'm fifteen years-old, named for my grandmother Magdalena MacLeod who was the Lost Queen of the Fey Kingdom. If you'll give me a few minutes I'd like to tell you about my family.
My Grandfather, Magdalena's Husband, is Ares the God of War. He didn't like her name and so he took it upon himself to rename her; Alena. Much to the displeasure of his Family, the Olympians, Ares fell head over heels for my grandmother who washed up on the shore of his island while Ares was sat in a wrongly imposed exile. He caused quite a stir when he refused to give her over to them in exchange for having his exile lifted and being welcomed home. Yet, as he once said, he would rather have one night with Alena than to have 10,000 nights on Olympus. So in love with her was he that when Aphrodite snatched her away from him and returned my grandmother to Cernunnos whom she'd managed to evade for two hundred years, Ares tracked him down to his forest Keep. There, after being held prisoner a short while, he cut down Cernunnos and turned his ancient fortress to ash.
Ares and Alena were married on the very beach, in the very spot, where she washed up on his shore. They were happy. So happy together but for such a short time. Alena became pregnant with my father, Raven and the Olympians, especially my Great-Grandfather, were very upset. They didn't want some half-breed running around Olympus. Knowing his Father's cunning and cruelty when Zeus presented Ares with a deal to keep Alena and Raven safe from harm he took it. The deal was that Ares would have to break his vow to Alena and sleep with Aphrodite bringing Zeus a full-blooded Olympian. Ares kept his part of the bargain and went to Aphrodite's bed but while in the throes of vengeful passion Alena went into labor alone. She cried out for her Husband but he wasn't there by the time he arrived with my Great-Grandmother, Hera, he'd nearly lost his Wife and his Son.
Raven was born he was loved by his mother and his Father but hated by Zeus in spite of the bargain he struck with Ares. From the union of Ares and Aphrodite, Trinity was born. She was a sweet girl, a full-blooded Olympian but showed no sign of having special powers. Not like Raven who could shoot balls of ice from his palms.
Not a being a full-blooded Olympian, it was up to Zeus whether or not to Accept my Father as one of them. Although my Grandmother had many mis-givings she was willing to allow it until Zeus, during the Ritual of Acceptance, tried to lay upon my infant Father the title of God of the Damned. She snatched her Son from the altar before Zeus could touch him with his staff and complete the ritual.
Much against the wishes of Ares and Alena, Apollo, Ares' nemesis was made Raven's guardian should anything happen to his Brother. Apollo gladly accepted the honored position as feeling of ill will was mutual. Apollo would do anything to hurt Ares but what he wanted above all else was my Grandmother. Working in concert with Zeus to bring down Ares and his new happy family, Apollo befriended Raven and planted wicked thoughts in my Father's head when he was only a child. In the end the goal of Zeus and Apollo was simple; they wanted Raven to grow so enraged that he would kill his Mother which would force to kill Raven and then, in a fit of depression, kill himself. Zeus would be rid of his least favored Son and the bastards Ares brought to Olympus.
Raven grew tall, strong, and angry until a deep hatred for his mother burned in his heart and spilled over to his Sister. Until one day, Trinity suffered a horrible accident; she fell from the very heights of Olympus all the way to the bottom of the mountain. Aphrodite was heartbroken at the loss of her Daughter. Ares was angry. Alena was suspicious of her Son and her Husband. Ares and Alena grew apart. Ares returned to Aphrodite's bed leaving his Wife pregnant alone with their Son. That night, Ares and Aphrodite created my Uncle, Hunter. When my Grandfather returned home to his fortress at the break of dawn, he found Alena broken and bloody at the bottom of a mighty marble staircase. He always suspected that Raven pushed her down the stairs although my father kept quiet and the assertion that he'd never touched his mother.
That day, Alena gave birth to my Aunt, Rose. The baby was small, too small. She was weak, frail, and malformed. Although Ares tried to do what he felt was the right thing and end her suffering he couldn't do it. Rose struggled, her life was not easy, but she was full of joy and determination. As her mother fell into a four year sleep, Raven grew and Rose grew and Ares fell into depression with his little Rose his only ray of light.
In secret, my Father and Apollo hatched a plan to bring anarchy to reign on the Mortal World. Apollo even convinced my Father that Ares would approve of the chaos and turmoil in the world below, that as the God of War, he would be proud. So Raven did all that could to bring about the destruction of the status quo in the world below. As riots broke out all over the planet, and the financial system crumbled, on Olympus my Father began fighting for acceptance among the Olympians began his Trials while Alena slept. Each God was to lay before him a Herculean task, the first of which was set by Hades. Raven went to the Underworld to rescue an innocent soul trapped in Tartarus. He faced many dangers and had to be quick on his feet and in his mind to pass all the way through Tartarus to the very center and the City of Dis where he faced the Furies and passed all of their tests. But Tisiphone presented him with a challenge of her own; if he made it back to Olympus in victory, he was to rescue my Grandmother from her deep sleep. She told him that Alena was not in coma but being held prisoner by Morpheus. If he were to rescue he would erase all his past misdeeds and be given a clean start. He would not face eternity behind the walls of Dis as a prisoner but, instead, when the time came, he would rule over it as the God of the Damned Zeus intended him to be.
On the last leg of his task he found the soul he was to rescue; Trinity. It wasn't easy but he gained her trust and in doing so came to feel the weight of the guilt of killing her. I think it was that moment my Father started to change and realize that, Olympian or not, there were things bigger than himself in this world. If he hadn't come to that understanding, I don't think my Father would have been able to face Ares, to tell him that all that time his beloved Wife was held captive in the Dream World and then to go and get her.
But they did, together Father and Son entered the Dream World, with little Rose tagging along unexpectedly. They found my Grandmother caught in the grip of a wicked nightmare as Morpheus held her, naked and cold, at the top of a very high tower. My Father morphed into a raven while Ares fought Morpheus, he flew to the top of the tower to rescue my Grandmother. Yet, when he reached out, when he touched her, the nightmare in her head jumped into him. He saw all manner of unspeakable things his Mother suffered and lived through and kept secret from him. They flooded into his mind until they made him scream and curled up in a ball, shaking and breathless for a long moment before he dared touch her again. In the end, Ares, Rose and my Father were victorious. They brought my Grandmother home after so long.
When they emerged from the Dream World, they woke to discover the Olympians knew what was happening in the Mortal World. Raven and Ares were accused of High Crimes Against Humanity and charged with the deaths of millions upon millions of Mortals caused not just by the rioting and upheaval but by a horrible disease called Major Falls, a weaponized version of rabies. Raven knew his friend Apollo had tricked him, lied to him all of those years. Held in Zeus' Dungeon, it was up to my Grandmother and Rose to prove their innocence. Temporarily cast out from Olympus they wandered the Mortal World and through the utter destruction and stench of death until they arrived at a place called Area 51. There Alena found the proof she needed but not before she was attacked and bitten by a dog riddled with Major Falls. Back on Olympus, with proof in her hands, Ares was proven completely innocent of all crimes. Raven swallowed his pride and admitted his part in helping the Mortals along as they barrel toward self-destruction but maintained his innocence in the spread of the disease. He too, was found innocent in the spread of the disease that would claim over two billion lives before it was done. More than innocence, Alena proved Apollo's guilt to the Olympians. She showed them irrefutable proof that it was Apollo who went to the Mortal World in Raven's form and purposefully set the disease free.
Zeus was furious with Apollo for having something so dastardly behind his back but he could do nothing to punish Apollo without revealing his own dirty deeds.
Vowing to do all that they could to put the Mortal World back together, my Family left Olympus, but as the Great Gate opened, Zeus suddenly Accepted my Father as one of them, giving Raven all of the power he would have and Lordship over the Damned just as he'd promised when Raven was only an infant. Apollo railed and the others were shocked by the gesture bestowed on the young man the God of Gods detested for so long.
When all of them returned to Ares' island, the God of War was ill. Unknown to any of them he'd contracted Major Falls and that turned out to be a very dangerous thing. In order to save Ares from a horrible death either at the hands of the disease or of his own Son, my Grandmother struck the deal with Apollo that he'd been waiting for; she would go to his bed if he would give Ares the cure he'd stolen from Area 51. Apollo jumped on it, and her, knowing he would hold this over her head and force her to his bed for many years to come.It was on that first trip back to the Mortal World, while traveling across the remains of the United States that my Father met my Mother, Lenora an Outcast Fey who had long searched for Alena with the desire of bringing her home. At first, they didn't trust each other, in fact they hated each other and my Father almost killed my Mother. Yet, they soon realized they shared common goals and were stronger together than apart.
I don't want to spoil anything from here on out, some things should remain as a surprise. So, if you'd like to know more about me, how I came to be, or about the lives and stories of my Family, our friend Lisa Beth Darling has written a wonderful series, OF WAR, I suggest you read it. Start with "The Heart of War" and immerse yourself in the beginning of this sweeping saga with the story of how my Grandfather, Ares, met and fell in love with my Grandmother, Magdalena MacLeod the Lost Queen of the Fey Kingdom.

About the Author:

I've been married for the last 27 years to my wonderful husband and incredibly talented musician & rockin' DJ, Roy. We live in my hometown of New London, CT where we have raised two beautiful daughters to adulthood.
My writing career began in junior high, around the 7th grade. A fact that my fellow students adored but often got me called down to the Guidance Counselor's Office to discuss the adult nature of my early stories. While the experience was never pleasant, I was not deterred by the counselors' worries I was spurred onward by them, as well as by my teachers, and my classmates, I continued to hone my craft throughout those formative years.
Through my full-length novels and series I bring conflict, passion, love, and suspense to unique couples--how about a Greek God and a Fae, a retiring military man and an aging widowed hippie, a famous writer/director and a lonely hitch-hiker, or a b-grade actor and a very lucky first-time author? Since I'm never one to shy away from the less pleasant things in life, indeed I believe that it is in the Darkness where Character is created, determined, and defined, my heroes and heroines have their love tested by demons from within and without.
To date, I have penned some 14 novels and 30+ short stories. All of my books and stories are filled with steamy sex, hot passion, dark intrigue, and nail biting suspense. ALL of my works are intended for a Mature Audience Only this includes most of my non-fiction books. My books are for those who like their reading on the gritty side. They are not intended for the faint of heart or those who enjoy a sweet read.
Also, being a Pagan (which is helpful when I write about the Ancient Gods!) I've penned a few useful guides for Ritual Sex/Love Magick and for those wanting to start out exploring Magickal Herbalism.
