I received an e-copy of this book from the publishers at NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Alright so the cover leaves a bit to be desired and the synopsis is a little odd. I decided to give it a try anyway. I have always seen good things from Entangled and I expected this book to be no less than awesome. I have a copy of Lindsey R. Lourks's The Grave Winner which I haven't read just yet, but have heard great reviews of it. I was hoping Haunted Chemistry would be another fun, albeit short, read.

Alexis just moved into her new apartment three weeks ago. She is venturing down into the creepy laundry room for the first time due to lack of clean clothes. She ends up bumping into her chem partner who she has been pining for ever since last semester. Fighting her immediate and involuntary attraction for him due to hurt feelings over him ditching her for their first ever date, she pushes past him and sets to the mediocre chore of producing clean clothes. It is only then when she starts to notice creepy things happening around her. Like a cabinet that refuses to stay closed.

Ian is determined to win Alexis's favor once more and being her knight in shining armor when she is afraid of things that go bump in the night seems just the right occasion. Through the fear they both come face to face with and the fiery feelings blossoming once more between them its a wonder if either of them come out of this situation unscathed.

This is yet another novella so there is not a lot I can say without giving everything in the story away. Unlike my last small book reviewed, this one was simply not up to par for me. The story moved fast, as is natural with shorter books, but it flew by with almost implausible circumstances. There was almost no meat to the story. The drama and action didn't rivet me at all and I found it kind of silly rather than scary. The romance between the two characters seemed forced. The only thing I liked about the book was the cat. I like cats. I like when they are in stories. That's it. This book was almost my first DNF and I am a stickler for finishing what I begin whether I want to or not.

Haunted Chemistry is a short ride down an odd supernatural road. I can say this for sure, there are very few books like it.

This was indeed a great, creepy, shivery ghost story! The kind that makes you (well me for sure) walk down the stairs to the basement - especially if you live in the same style of building - a little slower. If you (okay me) are a big chicken (yes I am) you make someone else go down and turn a light on for you so you don't have to go down in the dark.

THE GUY who she crushed on all last semester and who stood her up on their date at the end of the school year. They are both surprised - eventually happily - to see each other and they both take this chance meeting to reconnect. Unfortunately, they also discover something very very wrong about the laundry room and her new, "no wonder it was so cheap" apartment. Something that doesn't want them to ever have that first date.

I thoroughly enjoyed the scary and the action/adventure parts of this book. But I also felt that there was an underlying wisdom or lesson to this story, like you find in a fairy tale. A tale meant to amuse or distract the listener but also to teach an important life lesson. Alexis and Ian learn different parts of a larger lesson that put together, will help them move forward. Together as a couple (you knew it was gonna happen) but also as individual people with many choices to make.

Alexis heads to the basement of her apartment complex to do laundry. On her way down she bumps into Ian Reese. Alexis has a crush on Ian. The feelings are mutual. It appears that Ian has just moved into the building.

Alexis finishes going to the basement. Alexis gets a spooky sensation when she gets in the basement like someone is watching her. The cupboard opens by itself. Alexis gets scared but luckily Ian is there to protect her. It seems that the basement is haunted.

This is a short story about a ghost haunting an apartment.

Alexis and Ian find more than they bargain for in the laundry of their apartment building. While the ghost is haunting them, they rekindle their romance.

The story flows smoothly with great dialogue and descriptions. The characters are strong and vivid. And the plot is intriguing and entertaining with just enough spooky to give the reader chills.

This book would make a great story to read on Halloween with friends around a camp fire.

It has been three weeks since Alexis has moved into her new apartment. She needs to do her laundry. As she is about to enter the basement door, she runs into her lab partner from last semester's Chemistry class. Alexis is still harboring angry feelings that Ian stood her up for their first date and disappeared all summer without a word. Ian makes polite conversation but never mentions the date that never was.

In the basement laundry room, "there's a wall of storage cupboards. Each one is about th It has been three weeks since Alexis has moved into her new apartment. She needs to do her laundry. As she is about to enter the basement door, she runs into her lab partner from last semester's Chemistry class. Alexis is still harboring angry feelings that Ian stood her up for their first date and disappeared all summer without a word. Ian makes polite conversation but never mentions the date that never was.

In the basement laundry room, "there's a wall of storage cupboards. Each one is about three feet wide and three feet tall with padlocks hooked into the latches." Alexis throws her clothes into the washing machine when one of the cupboard doors swings open by itself. Terrified, Alexis runs out of the basement and straight into Ian's arms. He was coming back to explain to Alexis why he did not show up for their date. Alexis explains why she is scared, so Ian goes to investigate. Everything is okay.

When they return to the laundry room together, Ian stops dead in his tracks. The cupboard door was open again. The same cupboard he securely locked. they watch as a hand appears to come through the boxes that are in the cupboard. Next comes a head of blond hair. Alexis and Ian turn to run when they see the other hand come through.

I GIVE THIS BOOK: 1 Star

I really do hate giving this type of review.

This novella is completely ridiculous. The story is good but the way that it is written is unbelievable (and not in a good way).

* WARNING: SPOILER ALERT *

I have had a small fear of basements my entire life. The main character in this book, Alexis, has never feared a basement but all of a sudden is afraid of this basement before she even enters it. I do not buy her beginning fears. Then, Alexis and Ian see a ghost coming through boxes in the cupboard and they confront it. Not only do they confront a ghost, but they do so with salt. Salt is supposed to kill ghosts. Really? You are going after a ghost armed with only salt? They do not take some time to Google other things? I understand that Alexis wanted to get her cat back. I probably would have gone straight after the ghost without salt, but come on.

I am so confused about the holes and the cupboards. Someone explain how a kitchen cupboard is supposed to be big enough to fit a person but not big enough to see a hole the size of a person. And after the two break through the basement cupboard, description goes haywire. I could not visualize the area.

Then, minutes after they kill the ghost, they have sex. There is no more mention about cuts or the bleeding coming from Alexis's head. There is no talk about dirt and sweat and cobwebs. It was like they were completely clean for their first sexual encounter. A good man would have put me in the shower to make sure the cut on my head did not need stitches...then we would probably have sex in the shower.

And I really take offense to the author having Alexis call herself the crazy cat lady. She had one cat that she had for two or three months and that makes her a crazy cat lady? That is completely offensive to people who own cats. Including me, who has rescued four cats near death. One cat has both front arms amputated - EXTREMELY RARE! That does not make me a crazy cat lady! That makes me a hero to those cats, an advocate for their lives, a dedicated animal lover and someone who has enough patience and compassion to deal with handicapped animals!

This story was just not believable. The only thing that I believe in this story is that quarters are sacred.

To start with the good--I was enjoying the 'haunted' aspect of the story until the story went sideways with it. Alexis' uncertainty about whether she was imagining things (like cupboards being open suddenly or the chill in the air) was very tense and atmospheric.

And that's all I have to say about that.

This story failed to conv I'm not sure where to begin with this story. Please note this isn't a full length book--its a novella or novelette really and I think it suffered for its shortened length.

And that's all I have to say about that.

This story failed to convince me that a) Alexis was in any real danger and b) that the sudden drop of exposition as to why Ian never made their date was really necessary. The author doesn't pay much attention to physics or descriptions throughout the story--anyone who has lived in a student affordable apartment can attest that no the kitchen cabinents are NOT large enough for a person to squeeze into.

Even assuming we take into account that maybe the ghost warped reality to make it larger on the inside then the outside when attacking, the bodies of those murdered were found inside those cabinents. Logically wouldn't that mean that the bodies were wedged really tightly inside them and thus make it hard for them to pull the body out? Wouldn't they need to replace said cabinents?

And WHY was the laundry room cabinent connected to ALL the cabinents of the building? Was it like some sort of portal?

Plus I'm sorry but if I just crawled through muck and spider webs (not to mention a lot of blood running down my face), no I don't think I'd want sexytimes. Some acknowledgement that Ian and Alexis were engaging in sex moments after there's a tally of their injuries/grime covered bodies would have been nice.

To end with this was just not a story for me. The romance felt wedged in, the horror aspect got lost in the author's lack of grounding in reality and am I the only person who researches a place before I go near it? How did Alexis NOT hear of the murders/deaths? How did no one tell her? Isn't there a law about this? ...more

When you have a limited amount of pages available to tell the story, it’s important to ensure that you’ve set up the romance in a way that keeps the reader interested without resorting to the old tropes of insta-lust / insta-love. Alexis and Ian have a past together, albeit an unrequited and truncated one, thanks to Ian never showing up for their first date. So when they find themselves both living in a low priced but seriously frightening apartment building, it’s completely understandable that the sparks between them would fly once again, especially when Ian finally gets a chance to explain to Alexis why he’d never showed up that night. Then when all hell breaks loose and both their lives are in danger, the way they first cling to and then work to save each other works beautifully to cement their rekindled attraction and ensure a Happy For Now ending that is satisfying and believable.

What’s especially great about “Haunted Chemistry” is how the author sets up the time, the place, and the two main characters (three if you count Tri, the irrepressible cat who gets everyone else in trouble). The vivid descriptions of the apartments and the dreaded laundry room made me believe I was there with Alexis and Ian every step of the way. I was able to picture exactly how frightening the long narrow cabinets would be, especially at the moment when the analogy Alexis used to describe them nearly came true, with potentially deadly consequences.

“Haunted Chemistry” is a great way to get yourself in the mood for Halloween while enjoying a fast hot romance. I can’t wait to see what this author is going to write next. ...more

Sometimes a short read can surprise you with the elements the author manages to give us. Alex is just moved into a new apartment 3 weeks ago and decides she needs to do laundry. This was probably the least favorite of the novellas that I read this week. It had sort of a campy feel to me. I couldn't help picturing the girl from The Ring crawling out of the T.V. when she was describing the ghost girl crawling out of the cupboard.

Reading Lindsey R. Loucks's Haunted Chemistry is a lot like sitting around a dying camp fire, telling spooky stories as the night settles eerily around you. It's a fun read, and a delicious shiver or two might be in order. It definitely kept me entertained.
