Interview and Giveaway with Kristin Miller Author of Four Weddings and a Werewolf

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself?
National bestselling author Kristin Miller has had a passion for language and literature her whole life. Born and raised in northern California, she often made up stories about faraway places and edge-of-your-seat adventures. After graduating from Humboldt State University, Kristin taught high school and middle school English, married her college sweetheart, and had two beautiful munchkins. In 2008, she took time off from teaching to raise her children, and started writing while they napped. Her first novel was published in 2011, and since then she has had eight other novels published with Entangled Covet, Avon/HarperCollins and Harlequin Nocturne. She is the author of the Seattle Wolf Pack series (starting with the national bestselling book Gone with the Wolf), the dark and gritty Vampires of Crimson Bay series and the short-but-steamy Isle of Feralon novellas
What inspired you to write this book?
Logan Black, the hero in the story, made an appearance in the first Seattle Wolf Pack book. From the moment he stepped onto the page I knew he had to get his own book.
Please tell us about your latest release. To have and to howl…Logan Black, former Marine and bodyguard for the Seattle Wolf Pack, hates weddings and has no plan to walk the path to matrimonial misery. But when he’s hired to protect a hot-to-trot wedding planner with a werewolf stalker, he’s forced to put his feelings aside. Not such an easy task when the damsel can turn him on with a single smoldering glance.Wedding planner Veronica Vale knows werewolves exist, but hates them. One bit her sister, changing their lives forever. When a sexy Marine shows his gorgeous face at one of her wedding appointments, Veronica finds it hard to focus on the task at hand. The chemistry drawing Logan and Veronica together seems fated, but with Logan’s playboy attitude, Veronica’s hatred for werewolves, and a stalker lurking in the shadows, these two need more than passion to keep them together.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
Although this book is the second in the series, it can absolutely be read as a stand alone. There is no carry over, other than the two heroes are both werewolves from the Seattle Wolf Pack.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
I’ve found that if I’m suffering from writer’s block, it’s usually because the book has taken a turn in the wrong direction. I take some time, go to the gym, eat lunch, or go for a short run, and the issue usually becomes clear.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
For the length of the book I’m working on, I write to the same playlist over and over again. Sometimes I listen to the same song over…and over again. There’s just something about a certain melody that sparks my muse to life! My husband often worries that I’m going to snap, though I think I’m just fine. J
What was the last amazing book you read?
The Best Man by Kristan Higgins. I read the first page and was hooked by the heroine’s voice. Amazing.
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
Curled up on the couch with a cozy blanket. Can’t beat it.
What can readers expect next from you?
Keep an eye out for Seattle Wolf Pack #3 in late spring/early summer.
Where can readers find you on the web?

An ancient isen named Stone takes an interest in Kara’s training, and it turns out he has more answers than he originally led her to believe. Interview with the Cast of BirthMarked by Maria Violante

Transcript of Interview--Take Two--with the Cast of BirthMarkedNovember 5th, 2013
Interviewer and author of the Markers series, Maria Violante, is seated on the left. Four characters from the book--Joseph, Shawn, Rhonda, and Charlie--are seated on the right. The four are positioned so that they face Maria, with their side profiles able to be seen by the audience.  Maria stirs what appears to be a margarita before taking a large gulp.
Maria: “Welcome back to our guests . . . I mean, our sh-sh-ow.”
Rhonda and Charlie exchange a glance.  It is clear to the audience from Maria’s slurred speech that she is “in her cups.”  Judging by their expressions, both Shawn and Joseph have either not noticed or decided not to react.  Both men are dressed in black from head to toe.
Maria: “If you’d like to hear about the first half of the interview and what a horror show it was, you can find it on the internet at http://cloeyk.blogspot.com/2013/11/maria-violante.html.”  Hiccups.  “But anyways, I’m here again with the cast of BirthMarked,” she shoots the cast members a glare, “better known as PTSD boy, can’t stop giggling, thinks she’s the center of the world, and Mr. twist the sich . . . sich . . . sitch--ee-a-shun to his advantage.”
Throughout her litany, she has pointed at the cast members one by one--first Shawn, then Rhonda, then Charlie, and finally Joseph.  Now she nods, obviously impressed with herself, and seems to become lost for a second, before sitting bolt upright in her chair.
Maria: “And . . . let me tell you what a pain these guys are.”  She points at Charlie.
Charlie:  “Hey, that’s isn’t exactly fair.  I mean, the first book is about me, and the second one is all about how I’m going to deal with being pursued by monsters and the Markers, and me finding out the truth of my path, and oh yeah, me deciding on which man--”
Maria whips up the hand--without the margarita--but somehow manages to overbalance enough to slosh half of her drink onto the floor.
Maria:  “Stop!  Don’t tell me I wrote one of those two-angsty-boy love triangles?”  She stares at Charlie, aghast.  Rhonda snickers.   Maria puts her face in her palm and groans.
Maria:  “Great, just great--now I’m queen of the cliches.”  She starts to sob.
Rhonda and Charlie exchange a look.  Rhonda points at Charlie, who shakes her head violently.  Rhonda shrugs and looks away.  Charlie sighs.
Charlie:  “Hey, hey . . . it’s not all bad.  I mean, the book has some really original stuff in it.”Maria hiccups.
Maria: “Like what?”
Charlie swallows.
Charlie: “An evil fairy?”
Maria’s sobs get louder.
Charlie glares at Shawn and Joseph.
Charlie: “A little help here?”
Shawn yawns and remains silent.  Joseph scratches his chin and then clears his throat.
Joseph:  “Would it help that it’s not really a triangle?  I mean . . . Charlie’s got to get with one of us, because of the prophecy, but it’s a specific one of us.  It’s not like she really has a choice--”
Charlie bolts upright.
Charlie:  “Hey, now--I totally have a choice.  Screw you and your prophecy!”
Both men look aghast.  Rhonda whoops.  Maria takes an extra-large gulp from her margarita.
Shawn squints his eyes shuts for a few seconds while balling his hands into fists.
Shawn:  “Okay, let’s tell the truth.  None of us know what’s going to happen next--except for her.”  He points at Maria.  “And she hasn’t even finished writing the book yet.”
All four of them look at Maria.  Maria’s lip lifts into a snarl.
Maria:  “That’s not news to you guys, is it?  And I’m writing as fast as I can.”
Joseph lifts his hands in a placating gesture.
Joseph:  “We know.  It’s got to be hard to come up with all those original monsters.”
Maria sniffles.
Joseph:  “But think of this way--just because you wrote something one way doesn’t mean it will turn out that way, right?”  He brightens considerably.  “I mean, like, it could get rejected with a rewrite request, and then the love triangle could just be taken out!”
Maria groans and waves the camera away.
Maria:  “Commercial break.  Please.  Just.  Cue the commercial break.”

Author Note:
I originally tried out interviewing the cast on a guest post at Cloey’s book reviews.  Turns out that putting warrior Shawn, conniving Joseph, giggling Rhonda, and permanently confused yet finding herself and quick to anger Charlie in a room together to talk about a common theme is, well, a horror show--and it looks like our second attempt didn’t go much better, either.  Still, we’ve got a sneak peek at some of the things coming in the series, so that’s good . . . right?

Book Description:
The North Shore Sheriff's Department has a bit of a problem. Someone contacted the local radio station last night and left an alarming confession.
Logan and his friends may be gossiping about it but their only concern is getting through the last day of school before summer vacation. After all, tonight is the party of the year. No one wants to miss it.
But the weight of secrets will have a costly price…
Excerpt
Through the trees I could just barely make out the practice field ahead of me. Another little secret Sara had let me in on. The truant officer tended to make his rounds on the half-hour and kept a close eye on the path through the woods to the parking lot. If I came in from the practice field, no one would bat an eye.            “Then again,” I said aloud.            I thought about grabbing my jacket, but it really wasn’t cold enough. My phone on the other hand, I needed. Checking the screen, it was only a little after nine. Tardy, but not something that would stand out.            There was still a chance to ditch the entire day. My phone gave a brief buzz of notification. I checked it to find a text waiting. It was Hailey again.            “Where R U?”            I groaned. She was pissed at me. If I bailed, not only would Sara and Mom freak on me, Hailey would jump down my throat. I could avoid them, but I needed to take Hailey to the party tonight. I could just stand her up. I let out a heavy breath. I wanted to go though, and if I didn’t take her, she would still find a way to get there. It was just better to deal with her now than to put it off till the end of the day. Maybe she wouldn’t be too pissed.            “5 Min” I texted back and started walking towards the practice field. Old leaves and branches crunched underfoot, keeping my mind off the fact that Hailey was going to rip me a new one, and I had no clue what she was going to want.            The girl could hold a grudge better than anyone I’ve ever known.            I emerged into the open near one of the maintenance sheds. Why was I still with Hailey? She was constantly pissing me off, and she didn’t even hear me most of the time. I turned right to follow the maintenance path. I dumped Jamie for less than what I was putting up with now. I opened the texts from Hailey to scroll back. There had to be some reason.            A few days back through the texts was all I needed as a reminder. It was a ‘selfie’ shot from Hailey angled down at her. She was giving me a playful smile. Straight, platinum blonde hair, a tight low-cut top and a teasing attitude, she was hot. Knowing how she felt silenced any objections my brain could come up with at the moment.I smiled to myself.            Tucking the phone in my front pocket, I crossed into the parking lot. I couldn’t see anyone over the cars but I didn’t need to push it. I quickened my pace towards the end of the science building.            At the far end of the concrete and faux wood building I walked around the corner to the concrete steps and black railing. I took one last breath of the free air before climbing the stairs to the heavy fire-door. It was always left unlocked so teachers could duck out to the parking lot or students could get to the athletic fields. The cold handle slipped from my grasp as I tried to open the door. I finally noticed the grease and dirt on my hands.            “Ugh,” I groaned.

About the Author:
Born in California, I have spent most of my life traveling throughout the US. I draw inspiration from my many adventures, turning my strange reality into fiction.
Over the years, I've found myself in many unusual situations, ranging from hanging off an 80 foot cliff-face in New York, to sailing off the coast of Salem, Massachusetts. I have had an opportunity to work at an archaeological excavation, and have even reported from the middle of a police stand-off.
When a teacher asked me in the second grade what I wanted to be when I grew up, I didn't have an answer. To be honest, I still don't know. I let my characters make that decision for me.

Interview with Laura N. Anile

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?I’ve wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. I’m an avid reader of the paranormal genre, and love all things vampires, werewolves, angels, magic, etc. I like that anything is possible in the genre and I’m intrigued by characters who have special abilities. When you can do anything or be anyone, who do you choose to be? There’s always a cost to the power that these characters wield, and I wanted to explore the contradictory effects.
What inspired you to write this book?I wanted to delve into psychic abilities – and more specifically, how someone who didn’t believe in it would handle being thrown into the mysterious world of the paranormal. Could they dismiss it or ignore it if they saw someone in danger? Would they feel compelled to act? How would the people in their visions be connected to them? What price would they be willing to pay to save someone?I’m fascinated by the concept of fate versus choice, and the course of our lives being a tapestry with so many unseen threads tying it all together. Who controls the strings?Having the ability to see into the future opens up a world of possibilities, but it would definitely come at a price. Especially if you couldn’t control what you saw, or when.I like the idea that nothing is what it seems. And just when you think you have it all figured out, the tables turn. What is the purpose, how much control does she really have and, in the end, who is it that is really saving who?Plus, I like the idea of the girl being the one to save the guys for a change! ;-)
Please tell us about your latest release. Here’s the quick summary: When Isabel begins to experience premonitions of strangers in potentially life-threatening situations, she must decide what she is willing to do – and sacrifice – in order to save the people in her visions. It is only when her life spins out of control that she is able to take chances that she never thought possible – including opening her heart to love. The drama and risk involved in her premonitions escalates as the story unfolds, testing her resolve. She needs to throw all of her previous ideas and plans out the window and discover what she’s really made of – and what’s really important to her. Her experiences leave her questioning the idea of fate: what’s controllable, what isn’t, what is she willing to give and what is she willing to lose? It’s not a thriller – it’s about her opening up to possibilities she never thought possible, and explores how we are all connected. And there’s a love interest or two thrown in :-) Who doesn’t love a good romance?
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course? It’s difficult to choose one – I’d probably narrow it to three. One revolves around her love interest. Without giving away too much, the scene takes place when things finally heat up between the two.Another is when something happens that she never saw coming. It’s a key scene in the book and allowed me to explore a different set of emotions. The third is actually the final chapter (and leading up to it) so I can’t give anything away!
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?Absolutely. I know some writers push through and fix it in the second draft. I tend to step back. Usually, taking the break allows me to see it differently when I come back to it, or to let new ideas brew in the back of my mind. I tend to plan out the key scenes before I start writing though, so I know where it’s all going. That being said, sometimes the story reveals itself during the writing process and you have to change course. I completely rewrote the ending of Visions. I foolishly stuck to the plan in the first draft instead of following where the story wanted to go. I discovered that sometimes the story surprises you, and that’s a good thing.

Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?I love storytelling in all forms – books, film, TV. So I love to read, or watch a good movie. I always find it interesting to watch a film adapted from a book I’ve read, and see how it comes to life on screen – and how it’s interpreted. I also really love to travel and explore new places. Inevitably, traveling always brings a greater appreciation of home. And going out to dinner with friends is always great to unwind. I come from a large family and they’re really important to me so I enjoy spending time with them.
What was the last amazing book you read? The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead (book three in the Bloodlines series). Okay, so it wasn’t the last amazing book I read, but because book four (The Fiery Heart) is due out Nov 5, the series springs to mind! Things are finally heating up between Sydney and Adrian! I’m reading City of Bones by Cassandra Clare at the moment. I missed the movie when it was out at the cinemas so I’m looking forward to seeing it.
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?I mostly read in bed, but I also have a favorite reading chair I sometimes curl up in.
What can readers expect next from you?The sequel to Visions is next on my list. There will also be a third book in the series and I’m toying with the idea of a short prequel. In addition, I have another novel idea, which stemmed from a short story I wrote in Unmasked Secrets(which is available for free download). It’ll be set in a different world, where things are quite different from the norm.
Where can readers find you on the web?I love to talk to readers! You can find me on my website www.LauraAnile.com(where you can also take the What Would You Do? Quiz), my Facebook page (Laura N. Anile, Author) or Twitter @LauraAnile. Or you can view the book trailers on my YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/laurananile.
Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?Absolutely! I thought I’d tease you with one of her premonitions. Most of her visions involve things that could happen on a more regular basis, but as I mentioned earlier, the drama escalates. Don’t worry, it’s not a spoiler, since a snippet of the below is in the prologue.
* * *
“I’ve been monopolizing a lot of your time lately, haven’t I?”“I’ve wanted you to monopolize me,” he said in a low voice, his salacious grin adding heat to his eyes.I felt my cheeks warm as I took his hand to lead him in. “Are you staying tonight?”“I thought you’d never ask.”“Do you have plans tomorrow night?”“What do you have in mind?” he asked in the same suggestive tone.“Whatever you want,” I played along.“Really? Well that could be dangerous,” he breathed mischievously. “What time will you make yourself available to do whateverI want?” I giggled at his devilish grin. “Eight?”“Eight is perfect.”“So what exactly do you have in mind?” I asked coyly.“Be at my place at eight. The rest of the evening will be a surprise.” He paused, cocking his head. “Anything goes,” he teased, a dangerous glint in his eye.“Okay. I’m looking forward to it. I think.”“Not as much as I am, my slave girl,” he chuckled, his brows dancing.“Slave girl? You’re starting to make me nervous…I don’t want to re-enact Fifty Shades of Grey, if that’s what you’re thinking?”His laugh didn’t subdue my nerves—there was something devious in it. I knew I wasn’t getting any more out of him; whatever he had planned, he wasn’t giving it away. Given I’d only just discovered his cooking skills, I hoped he’d be flaunting his domestic capabilities again. But the heat in his eyes led me to believe it was something else he had in mind. I was a little nervous, but flushed with eager anticipation. Whatever was on the evening agenda, I knew I was in good hands. Warm, masterful hands…I snuggled closer to him and breathed in his familiar scent.“I might give you a preview,” he murmured in my ear, his voice deepening as he tugged me to the bedroom and pulled me onto the bed. A wave of heat immediately ignited within me and my hands found their way under his clothes. The feel of his skin against mine, his body moving with mine, took my breath away.Later, I fell asleep in his arms, my last thoughts of the unbridled anticipation of whatever he had in store for the following evening. It started as it usually did. Me looking down at the multiple-choice test with his hand on my shoulder. But then the scene shifted and I was no longer in the exam room looking at a piece of paper. A piece of paper couldn’t physically hurt me; what was now in front of me could. Absolutely terrified, I dared to take a glimpse at the man holding the gun. He was dressed all in black, wearing a riding jacket over a T-shirt and jeans. His face was completely obscured by the black helmet he wore. I glanced behind him and saw my terror reflected back at me in the eyes of the woman behind the teller. There were four other people in the bank, besides the three tellers. A woman, with a young girl who appeared to be between ten and twelve, and two men. One of the men looked to be in his forties, and wore a navy suit with a gold tie. The other was in a black suit with his back to me. The young girl began screaming; a scream that made your blood run cold. Her mother instantly tried to placate her, eventually smothering her mouth when those attempts failed. That only intensified the screaming, agitating the girl more. The gunman flew into a rage, demanding the girl be silenced before hesilenced her. His hand twitched in fury. Could he honestly harm a child? I wondered, as fear crashed over me. The interminable screaming shrilled through the bank as the girl thrashed in her mother’s arms. My skin tingled, the air electrified with trepidation. The gunman pointed the weapon directly at the child, narrowing his eyes. Time slowed down, like someone hit pause.A feeling of complete and utter helplessness reverberated through me as I frantically scanned the room, searching for some kind of help to magically materialize. A number suddenly flickered in my vision, flashing like a number on a screen: 12.19. I blinked; it felt like a camera flash had just gone off in my eyes. Then I noticed the calendar. All I saw was Thursday before the scene began to move once more, still in slow motion. My attention instantly returned to the gunman. His finger inched towards the trigger. His whole body was shaking. Panic crippled me. This was it and I had no idea what to do.A growl erupted from the gunman’s throat as his feeble control shattered and his finger pulled back the trigger. There was no time left to decide, to think. There was only time to act. Instinctively, I jumped in front of the young girl as I heard the deafening crack of the gun being fired.I jumped so violently that I awoke, drenched in sweat.

Book Description:
One bullet is all it took to transform eighteen-year-old New Yorker Jordan Amador into the last hope for souls of the dead. However, it also transformed her into a cantankerous asocial waitress with a drinking problem.
Jordan accidentally shot and killed a Seer: a person who can communicate with ghosts, angels, and demons. Worse still, she did so on the eve of her own awakening, making her the last Seer on Earth with no one to guide her. As penance, God gives her two years to help one hundred souls with unfinished business cross over from Earth to the afterlife or she will go to Hell. Just as she approaches the deadline, Jordan finds her hundredth soul: a smart-mouthed poltergeist named Michael whose ability to physically touch things makes him distinct from her usual encounters with the dead. However, the deeper she delves solving his sudden death, the more she realizes something sinister is on the horizon.
With time running short, Jordan stumbles across a plot that may unravel the fragile balance among Heaven, Hell, and Earth. Her life is plunged into chaos as she is hunted by demons that want to use her valuable Seer blood to bring about the end of the world and discovers that these creatures have a frightening connection to her family bloodline. Plus, the budding romance between Jordan and Michael makes it harder for them to let go of each other so he can become part of the eternal black parade.
The Black Parade excerpt
My head throbbed. It felt like my brain was trying to hammer its way through my skull and into the outside world. A pained groan crawled out of my throat and escaped my dry lips. As I regained consciousness, I realized I was lying on a bed of some kind. The mattress had way too many springs in it so they poked my spine like needles. My eyelids fluttered for a second and a wave of nausea hit. I pressed my palm to my forehead as if it would help. That was when I realized the necklace around my wrist was gone. “Sleep well?”I heard a purring baritone voice from the corner of the white room. My eyes shot open. Ignoring the nausea and dizziness, I frantically pushed myself up to a sitting position. There stood the longhaired man who came to unlock Jacob’s files. He leaned his lanky frame against the far wall, smoking a cigarette. The black suit stood out stark against the pristine paint behind him. I swallowed hard and tried to get a bearing on where I was. No windows. The door didn’t have a knob, either. From what I could tell, this was either an operating room or somewhere they put the patients who were a threat to themselves or the hospital staff. It was also rather small—no more than an eight by eight foot room, not much bigger than the bathroom in my apartment. The man continued to watch me with a cool expression. The eerie patience on his face made me realize I hadn’t replied to his comment. As if I really knew what to say to the man who had just kidnapped me. I went for the casual approach.“You’re not allowed to smoke in hospitals.”He chuckled deeply enough to shake his broad shoulders. I took a moment to analyze his weight and strength. Could I take him? Most likely, no. Would I try it anyway? Hell yeah. “You’re right, I suppose. Still, I can’t help loving these things.” He flicked the cancer stick to the linoleum floor and stomped it out. “Humans come up with the most wonderful things to destroy themselves with.”A red flag popped up in my mind. Please God, no. “Pardon?”The man walked towards me and fear wormed its way up my stomach, settling in my chest. He had a heavy presence about him that confirmed my suspicion. “I’m hurt, Jordan. You don’t recognize me?”My whole body tensed. He leaned over the bed until our faces were level, placing his arms on either side of me. I had to ball my hands into fists to keep them from trembling. I looked into his eyes. They were a chillingly blue hue with reptilian pupils. I’d seen them before. “Belial.”

Interview with Yelena Casale and Tina Moss

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
TINA: It all started one day after a particularly tough karate training. I was lamenting over not being able to sell my children’s books. Yelena mentioned that she’d written in college, but nothing since. We both wanted to attempt something new. I had this idea about a paranormal creature that had been in my mind for years and I always wanted to try to write adult books. I decided to just tell Yelena about it. Lo and behold, she didn’t think I was crazy and loved the idea. So, off we went.

What inspired you to write this book?
YELENA: I always had an interest in angelic mythology, so when I heard Tina’s idea I knew I wanted to write it with her. But, we wanted to do something different and not geared toward any traditional mythos about angels and demons.
Please tell us about your latest release.
YELENA: A Touch of Darkness centers on Cassie and her major problem. She’s got paralyzing headaches and hands that glow purple at random. Nothing she’s tried has worked and she’s frightened that she’s losing her mind. Enter Gabe, our mystery man, with an agenda of his own and things quickly descend into chaos.
TINA: We like to say it is Buffy meets the Devil’s Advocate, but we have demons instead of vampires, casino tycoons instead of lawyers, and a tricky bunch of angels that don’t play by the rules.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
TINA: We loved figuring out the character names and playing on the –el ending from angelic mythology. Each character has a short, humanized version of their name, then a longer more paranormal name. Each is mentioned as the book goes along.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
TINA: Dan was definitely the tough one to write for me. You have to hit the right note of pure evil, but still give his actions rationale in his own mind.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
YELENA AND TINA: Rafe!
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
TINA: Oh yes. We use a character template that includes their personality traits and a mini interview for each character. It helps us write in their voices.
YELENA: We also love to search the internet for potential ideas of what our characters look like.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
YELENA: Cassie meeting with a character named Rafe was definitely fun to write. Actually, just about every scene with Rafe could be one of my favorites.
TINA: For me, it’s a scene between Gabe and Albert. They’re walking through New York City and it’s the first time that Gabe really takes a look around and sees the world for what it is.

What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?
TINA: I’m writing an NA novel now that takes place on a Montana animal sanctuary. I’ve been to animal sanctuaries before, in fact Yelena and I took a trip to a wolf sanctuary last summer, but seeing the Montana landscape would be amazing.
YELENA: When we got the idea for A Touch of Darkness, I walked the streets in NYC that Cassie would take between her home and job and wrote down everything I noticed on the way.
The beginning of the Urban Fantasy I’m writing now takes place in Kiev, my hometown in Ukraine. I haven’t been back there in 22 years, so I’m desribing places there partly from memory and partly through research I’m doing online about how the city looks today.

With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
TINA: A Touch of Darkness can stand alone. Ideally, it would be a four book series, but we’ve started and stopped the second book twice. So, we’re letting readers dictate our path. If they want more, we’ll be ready to give them more.
YELENA: Yes. We’re happy to let readers jump in and enjoy wherever they’d like. For future books in the series, we hope to give enough backstory to help readers transition or start where they prefer.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with itYELENA: I do suffer from writer’s block once in a while. When I do, I read a lot, both books on the writing craft and books in my genre to remind myself what I love about writing. Sometimes just changing my daily routine or getting out into nature helps me get through the block.

Do you write in different genres?
YELENA: Currently, I only write urban fantasy and paranormal romance. Eventually, I would love to also get into the historical fiction genre. On occasion, I also write flash fiction.TINA: Yes. Too many is the short answer. But, I started with picture books, then short horror stories. When I moved to adult novels, I gravitated right away toward urban fantasy and paranormal romance. My next book has a big suspense part to it, so we’ve been calling it paranormal romantic suspense. The newest NA project, however, is contemporary romance.
Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres?
TINA: No. I like the challenge of discovering the nuances of different genres. I just have to stop writing so many at the same time. J

Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
YELENA: Besides writing and my day job, I have a job teaching Shotokan karate women’s program at my dojo. Martial arts have always been a passion. Other great passions include history, art and reading. I love to travel with my hubby and learn languages.
TINA: Yelena and I both love Shotokan karate and our friendship started in the dojo. I’m not currently practicing, but I’ll always be a martial artist. In my spare time I love to read, watch cheese horror movies, spend time with family and friends, and take walks with the hubs and our corgi, Chuck.
What can readers expect next from you?
TINA: Hopefully, the next book in the Key series from us. Then, I’ve got the paranormal romantic suspense, Code Black, with the agents, the NA contemporary romance in the works, and too many projects to name. But, all the details for upcoming works are on my website.
YELENA: Besides the next project together with Tina, I’m working on two urban fantasies and a couple of short stories.

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Sure! Cassie and Gabe have been thrown together by fate. After a series of utterly chaotic events, they end up in Sin City itself...Las Vegas. Cassie’s ready to have a bit of alone time and Gabe is about as fed up as can be, so it creates a delicious tension between the two. Hope you enjoy!

By the time they entered Vegas, Cassie’s head swam. She had to get away for a while, to think on her own. But being alone in a hotel room just didn’t seem like a good option. She chose not to mention that to Gabe.

Inside the city limits, Gabe drove like he’d been to Vegas numerous times, though Cassie suspected that was impossible. They never hit the strip but instead veered toward a string of small motels behind it. She could see the bright lights of the strip illuminating the evening sky, whereas these backstreets flooded the area with darkness. The occasional neon light would announce a No Tell motel, a grimy casino, or a seedy strip club.

Gabe drove much slower now, obviously trying to choose the right place. He at last turned into the tiny parking lot of an ominous looking building. It sat two stories high. Most of the windows were black behind crass green curtains. A midnight blue sign, half-lit by the light from the street lamp, pronounced the motel’s name as “Desert Breeze”. Cassie tried to hide her distaste by covering her face with her hands and faking a sneeze.

They entered the cramped lobby. It possessed one central desk and a couple of uninviting armchairs. A heavyset man in his mid-forties sat behind the desk. A thick hand covered his yawn as they approached. Stains covered his shirt, appearing to be the same green hue as the motel rooms’ curtains.

“Can I help you?” He sounded as bored as he looked.

“We’d like a room, please,” Gabe said.

“By hour or day?”

Gabe’s gaze shot to her with a hint of amusement in them. “We’ll be staying for a couple of days,” he said, turning back to the man.

“Cash or credit?”

“Cash.” Gabe reached into the inside pocket of his coat and took out a wallet. Rifling through it, he placed four twenties on the counter.

Cassie wondered, not for the first time, where he would get money. He never seemed to have a shortage of it. Another question she put on her mental checklist of unanswered mysteries.

“Room seven. Up the stairs and down the hall.”

As soon as they entered the room with their bags, Gabe went through it, looking in all corners. He peered out the window, nodded to himself as if in approval to his own thought, and closed the curtains. Cassie watched him, crossing her arms over her chest and letting her weight sag to one foot.

“I’m going now,” Gabe said, returning to the door, where she stood. “Lock the door behind me, and don’t let anyone in. Do you understand?” He waited for her to nod, before he continued, “Don’t open the curtains. Unpack and rest. I’ll be back when I’m done with business.”

“Yes, master,” Cassie said and bowed in mock obedience.

“Cassie, this isn’t a joke.” Gabe’s fists tightened at his sides.

“You just don’t have a sense of humor,” Cassie muttered as she moved further inside the room and put her bag on the lone bed.

Gabe looked at her for a long minute. “You can be a very irritating woman,” he said. And, as if an afterthought, “Keep your cell phone near.” He closed the door and disappeared.
Cassie exhaled. She didn’t know if it was out of relief or not. One thing was for certain, she did not intend to stay in this room. “If he needs me, he can call my cell.” Nodding at her approval of the plan, she rummaged through her suitcase. A shiny material at the bottom caught her eye. “Danger be damned. I want a distraction. I need a distraction.” Donning an outfit she would never have considered before her life turned upside down, she winked into the mirror. “And this is the city of ultimate distractions.”

Half an hour after Gabe left, Cassie called for a cab.

Interview and Giveaway with Iain McChesney

What inspired you to write this book?
I’ve always read and enjoyed different genres and what you’d call “the classics” as well. That made it difficult at first. It wasn’t like I’d grown up all my life needing to write a cowboy book or anything. What drew me to write The Curse of Malenfer Manor – a gothic novel – is that it combined all those bits I liked best. A pinch of horror, a dash of supernatural, a sniff of the grisly, a stem of romance, a teaspoon of the dark soul in all of us. I wanted to keep it interesting and I wanted a plot that moved. Setting civilized people in uncivilized times lets you talk about what matters in life without boring people to tears.

Do you have a special formula for creating characters’ names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
The book is a period book – it is France just after WWI. I thought that names would be easy; after all it is not a fantasy world. I was wrong! When you write historical fiction, you should be humble. There are a lot of people out there who know a great deal more on a subject than you. I don’t think I had a character in the book who didn’t undergo a name change or two to fit with historical accuracy. That made it hard. I grew attached to certain characters and still think of them in their pre-editorial originals. Malenfer remained true throughout, however, as did Dermot Ward, my hero. I lifted the name Malenfer from a French casualty list. He was a real soldier who died in World War I. Shamefully, my French is very poor. I thought it meant ‘bad fire’ (the deficiency was not in the education system but in the student who paid scant attention). It does not mean that at all. I was later to discover, rather creepily, that a literal translation of Malenfer might be ‘evil hell’ or something of that sort. A more appropriate name I couldn’t have made up.
What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?
I walled up a sibling in a deserted ruined tower and drank wine till the cries finally dwindled. I had a terrible hangover the next day. I don’t recommend it. Or if you do try it, drink lots of water and take a couple of Tylenol afterwards.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
Yes, I do. Sure. Not in a big way. I’ve never had one of those epic “never wrote a word in five years” writer’s blocks that lead to madness and end up in folklore (touch wood). I benefited from a bit of research into other writers’ habits and co-opted (stole) those habits that sounded good. I had a breakthrough when I went to setting goalposts for chapters. The writing immediately got easier. What is a goalpost? Well, for any of your readers that want to give it a try, you start the chapter knowing who is in it and where they are, and you set where they must get to by the end of maybe ten pages – who they need to meet, what information must be communicated, what hints or red herrings you need to drop, who needs to die a hideous death. J Then I set out to write it. This method allows a degree of structure but also the freedom to let things flow. It works for me.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
Oh, certainly. They even sound weird to me, so goodness knows what others think of them. One I’ll tell you about is that I find it better to write if I have something on my head. You know how they put blinkers on race horses to keep them focused? It is likely something akin to that, but it isn’t about peripheral vision. I do well with something atop my head, perhaps to keep the pixie dust from escaping? A hat – sure – I’ve got a few different ones, but a towel works, or a pillow. The cat would work if it didn’t keep moving. I told you it sounded strange.
Do you write in different genres?
I’m going to cheat and answer a slightly different question. The whole genre thing is interesting. I set out to write a gothic novel. I pretty much knew what that was. What I did not know (stupid me) was that the publishing world today doesn’t accept gothic. I could be a mystery writer, or crime, or horror, or paranormal, or historical fiction, or romance, but I couldn’t be all at once. I mean, I get it – there are only so many book shelves in a store and you have to put it somewhere – but gothic co-opts them all. So I guess the answer is yes and no.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
You know, I don’t entirely think of myself as one even now, or if I am it’s a hyphenated title. I started writing as a creative endeavour. An expression of imagination. The invention was the hit. I have a different job that pays the bills and do other creative things too. What I find bizarre, after the publication of The Curse, is that this private writing world of mine is now shared with the rest of the world. I am now a writer to other people, but I haven’t caught up. It might take some time to get used to. It isn’t an entirely unpleasant experience.
What was the last amazing book you read?
Eeee. I’ve read a few. All over the map. I can recommend Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, although Oprah beat me to it. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline will have you skipping work or school for a day or two. For gothic, read Poe, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and the weird stuff of H.P. Lovecraft. That’s enough to mess up your head for a while. Was that more than one? My apologies.
What can readers expect next from you?
I plan to kill a few interesting people off on an island in rural Scotland. Don’t worry or be too alarmed, it took place about 80 years ago. There are rumours of demonic ritual, but the witnesses are strangely silent.
Where can readers find you on the web?
I have the obligatory author site – http://iainmcchesney.com – which should be relatively up to date. There are occasional giveaways, promos, and competitions. Facebook will let you like me (why not ‘ambiguous’ or ‘hate’?) at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Iain-Mcchesney/352793594851795. Drop by and say hello.

About the Author:
Iain is a writer of gothic mysteries.
He was born and raised in Scotland. He studied History and Geography at the University of Glasgow.
The World Wars left Iain’s family with generations of widows. As a result, Iain has always been interested in the tangible effects of history on family dynamics and in the power of narrative to awaken those long dead. For the characters in The Curse of Malenfer Manor, he drew on childhood reminiscences and verbal family history—though he hastens to add that his family had barely a penny, far less a manor, and any ghosts dwell only in memory.
He lives in Vancouver, Canada, with his wife and two children.

PortentsAmanda Ryder V.I. Book 2Shanyn Hosier
When all signs point to trouble, can Amanda steer clear of disaster?
Amanda Ryder's determined never to fail her coven again. Next time, she won't hesitate to pull the trigger to defend her friends. If only they'd trust her enough to let her set foot outside the Academy…
Frustrated and itching to prove herself, Amanda snags her first Academy mission: she and Toby Laboyteaux, fellow teen witch who "kinda sorta sees the future," must work together to track down a local swamp monster stirring up trouble in the sticks. But overturned suburban garbage cans and blurry tabloid pictures aren't the only problems—strained relationships with her new colleagues, a growing guilt-complex, and the waxing moon all add to Amanda's stress. Add to that the pressure of being hunted by a psychic psychopath, and Amanda's got plenty on her mind.
Meanwhile, Hamilton Nash swears Marian Dupree and her Academy of bumbling do-gooders have thwarted his plans for the last time. Convinced Amanda's the subject of his mother's recent prophecy and the key to his future success, he redoubles his efforts to obtain the mystery girl. But when Amanda proves too slippery a quarry, Nash sets his sights on the next best thing. When a valuable member of the Academy coven is kidnapped, Amanda and her friends are in a race against time. Is a tragic future destined to come to pass?
About the Author:
Born and raised in small-town, rural Indiana, I now live in metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona with an intimidatingly smart and devastatingly handsome husband and two hyperactively cute and talented sons who will one day be Earth's Overlords (never underestimate the power of Legos). I enjoy cooking, traveling, gardening, sewing, quilting, and embroidery but only when I'm in the right mood and seldom concurrently (I'm kind of streaky when it comes to hobbies). I adore reading and writing in the same way that I love breathing and eating, gaining a similar nourishment from each.

Interview and Giveaway with Wonderland Author David-Matthew Barnes

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
My name is David-Matthew Barnes. I’m a filmmaker, novelist, playwright, poet, and teacher. I write young adult and literary fiction under my own name and romance and suspense novels under the name Dylan Madrid. When I’m not writing, I teach college courses in writing and the arts.
Up until now, I have always written realistic, character driven novels. Wonderland is a huge departure from that. I really found writing a paranormal novel to be liberating. I had complete creative freedom. Anything was possible.
What inspired you to write this book?
Because I write mostly for young people, I receive a lot of messages and emails from them. Often they share elements of their lives with me. I started to notice a lot of them writing about losing someone they love. I knew I eventually wanted to write a novel about a young person dealing with grief and death.
The initial idea for Wonderland came to me during a ghost tour in New Orleans. The tour guide asked, “Do you believe in magic?” That question seemed so powerful to me. Back in my hotel room that night, I started to outline the plot of the book. That particular question is the first line of the novel.
Wonderland is really a combination of those two elements: love and magic.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
Without giving away any spoilers, the characters of Dominic, Pablo, and Juliet posed many challenges to me as a writer. We don’t meet them until the middle of the novel, but they are critical to the second half.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
I really love all of the characters in this novel, but I have a particular fondness for Adrianna Marveaux. In many ways, the character is based on my own grandmother who’s no longer with us. She was also a very glamorous woman who was filled with a tremendous amount of love and light.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
I would have to say the dinner party scene is my favorite. I was very determined to create memorable ways that Destiny entered the party and left the party. I really love both. I feel like this particular scene consists of some of my strongest writing to date. I spent more time revising this scene more than any other. It was very important to me to get it right, to paint the best picture I could, to capture the true essence of love and magic.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book? How does this world differ from our normal world?
Everything in this book centers on place. In order for the novel to work, I knew Wonderland had to be a fascinating place that both the readers and characters would want to return to as much as possible. I drew basic sketches of the layout of the house. I did a lot of research on architecture, especially on Victorian houses, which Wonderland is – specifically a Queen Anne. Even though there are some references in the form of imagery and objects to Lewis Carroll’s classic, I wanted them in the book more as a tribute and less as an adaptation. I knew comparisons would be made between my version of Wonderland and other variations of it. This inspired me to dig deep into my imagination and really infuse my own style.
Avalon Cove – where the novel takes place - is not a real island. However, to prepare for writing the novel, I spent time on Tybee Island in Georgia and the Isle of Palms in South Carolina. A lot of my experiences in both places made their way into the novel.
Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?
I think every character I create is an extension of me in some way, even if only a small one. They all come from me, from my experiences in life, from people I meet, conversations I have or overhear. Certainly, some characters hit closer to home. In Wonderland, I felt a close connection with Destiny and Topher. In many ways they are both similar to the younger version of me.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
I probably have too many too count, but a few are: I must have a title before starting a big project; I always create an unofficial soundtrack for my novels that I listen to constantly while creating; I don’t read other books or scripts while working on a project.
Do you write in different genres?
Yes, other than young adult and literary fiction under my own name, I also write romance and suspense novels under the name Dylan Madrid. In addition to fiction, I have also written several stage plays. I also work in film and television. Some of my poetry has been published as well.
Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres?
Not at all. In fact, I love working and writing in multiple genres. There’s a great benefit to doing this. Sometimes a fantastic idea will come to you but you’re not sure the best way the story should be told. Working in multiple genres gives you an advantage in that regard. You have more choices.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
I write for teenagers because when I was 13 years old, a woman named Norma Fox Mazer changed my life. Growing up, she was one of my favorite authors. My eighth grade world was lit on fire when it was announced she would be making a guest appearance at our school.
After some serious campaigning to the junior high powers that be, I was one of the few students selected to have lunch with her in the library. I was beyond thrilled, having read every book she'd written. Although I was terribly star struck, I bravely showed her a section of a short story I was working on at the time and told her how much I wanted to be a writer.             Norma Fox Mazer scanned over the first page and informed me, "You already are."            Two years later, I published my first short story. And the rest, as they say, is history.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
I don’t know if I would call them guilty pleasures, but I have many things and people in my life that make me smile including: my wonderful partner Edward, my friends, my dog Lucy, my cat Phronsie, white carnations, board games, anything written by Dorothy Parker, white chocolate, Chicago at Christmas, the city of Brussels, iced nonfat Chai tea lattes, peanut butter M&M's, the success of my students, the sound of rain, the smell of gardenias, slow dances, and tacos.
What was the last amazing book you read?
I just finished reading Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir. Growing up, she was my muse. A lot of my friends were really into Madonna, but not me. Cyndi Lauper showed the world it was okay to be different, that creativity should be valued and respected and revered. I adore her. To this day, I’m greatly inspired by her commitment to be her and no one else. Individuality wasn’t exactly the cool thing in the early 80s, but she did exactly what she wanted. She busted her ass to become successful and she never gave up. In the book she talks about one of her favorite personal sayings: “In the darkest place, shed the brightest light.” I take those words to heart. They are words to write and live by.
What can readers expect next from you?
I have two novels coming out in 2014.
The first is a literary novel called Stronger Than This, which comes out in February. I truly feel this is my best work to date. It was a very challenging novel to write because I wrote it in epistolary form. It was also a very emotional experience because of the subject matter.  It’s about two people who meet in a support group after losing someone they loved. They decide to help each other get through the pain and grief.
The second is a young adult novel called Fifty Yards and Holding, which will be out in August. It’s about the unexpected friendship between the star of a high school baseball team and the leader of a violent street gang. The two men end up falling in love even though everything in their world stands against them.
I’m currently writing a new young adult novel called The Marijuana Mermaids. It’s about three girls in high school who make a pact to see how much they can get away with. It’s an exploration of female rebellion.
Where can readers find you on the web?
They can visit my official website at www.davidmatthewbarnes.com. I’m also on Facebook and Twitter.
Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Absolutely. In this scene, Destiny has been convinced by her friends Topher and Tasha to go inside Wonderland for her very first time.
Topher turned to me. “Destiny, do you believe in magic?”            I gave them both a look. “Okay,” I said, a hand on my hip. “Why does everyone keep asking me that?”            Tasha reached out and brushed a few strands of hair away from my eyes. “Because here,” she said, “you either believe in magic…or you don’t. Topher and I…we believe.”            “We need to know where you stand,” Topher echoed.            “Where I stand?” I repeated. “I’m standing on an island in South Carolina a thousand miles from home.”            Topher slid his arm around my waist. He whispered into my ear, “That life is behind you now.”            I started to cry, and felt like a complete idiot. “I know,” I said, with a small nod. “I can never go back.”            “We know what you’ve been through,” Tasha said. She took my hand and placed it in hers. Her skin was as soft and velvety as it looked. “We know about pain.”My voice cracked when I spoke. “I miss my mom,” I admitted.             “She misses you, too,” Tasha said, tightening her grip on my hand.            “Soon everything will make sense,” Topher promised.            “You guys are being super sweet and I really appreciate that,” I said, “especially since you don’t even know me. I swear I’m not usually an emotional mess like this.”            “We want to take you somewhere,” Topher said.             “Okay,” I said. “But should I call my uncles first?”            “I promised Sir Frederic the Great I’d have you home by nine,” Tasha reminded me. “And you will be.”             “I only have one question,” I said.            “You can ask us anything,” Topher said. “We have nothing to hide.”            “Where exactly are we going?” I asked.            Tasha smiled at me and said, “We’re taking you to Wonderland.”
