Entangled Flirt
Book Description:
Lady Arabella Sutton is stunned to learn her brother has betrothed her to a stranger despite his promises for a season in London. Although she is the first to admit no man would suit, since she’s more interested in horses than marriage, the last thing she wants is to become a brood mare to a stuffy old earl. Facing a future she cannot abide, she takes an impetuous ride to clear her head and ends up tending her injured mare instead.
Oliver Westwyck, the Earl of Marsdale, can’t believe his luck when he stops at an inn the night before he’s to meet his fiancée. In the stable, while tending the colt he intends to give to his future wife, he happens upon her—rain-drenched but beautiful. She assumes he’s a stable hand, a fine joke he means to end...until Lady Arabella declares all noblemen are egotistical, conceited, and arrogant. How can he reveal his true identity before he’s managed to change her mind and win her heart?

I enjoy a love-hate relationship with Alaska, where I live with my husband and two teen-aged sons. While I struggle with some aspects of the 49th state (darkness, cold) I have grown to appreciate the unique things the last frontier has to offer (no traffic, 24 hour daylight, privacy). When I’m not reading, writing, or playing board games, I’m cheering for my sons at their hockey games and tennis matches. I write historical and contemporary romantic fiction and I’m a member of Romance Writers of America.

An Introduction to Moira from A BREATH OF FROST and a Giveaway

Alyxandra Harvey, popular young adult author of the Drake Chronicles, Haunting Violet, and Stolen Away, is back with a bewitching new young adult fantasy series that will take readers through the streets of magical 19th century London. A BREATH OF FROST, the first installment in The Lovegrove Legacy (published by Bloomsbury Childrens) goes on sale January 7, 2014. It’s full of witches, magic, family secrets, goblin markets, deer-people, and boys in cravats!
An Introduction to Moira from A BREATH OF FROST
· Moira
· Age: 18
· Hair: black
· Eyes: grey
· Familiar: orange tabby cat called Marmalade
· Magic: The soles of her feet itch to warn her when she is in danger.
Moira wants nothing to do with the fancy folk of the Beau Monde.
And she wants even less to do with the Order of the Iron Nail.
She just wants to be left alone to run magical errands for One-Eyed Joe in the Goblin Market and run about with the other Madcaps. To be a Madcap is to be a free witch, to owe no one fealty, least of all the Order who have the power to trap your magical familiar in a witch bottle. Moira has spent her entire life avoiding them…until the night all the gargoyles in London fly away.
Suddenly the Greymalkin Sisters are loose in London and killing young witches, and One-Eyed Joe sends Moira to help three desperate debutante cousins who drag Moira right in the middle of the Beau Monde…and the Order.

Excerpt 1: Moira
All around her came the cracking of stone and the splintering of shingles. She could hear it even over the clatter of carriage wheels on the street below, the restless horses in the stable, and an orchestra playing music for the fancy folk. They danced while overhead, the magic they didn’t even know protected them, broke.
Gargoyles of all shapes and sizes, all sneers and smiles, deserted their posts. A few crumbled to dust but most—too many—launched off roof points, dormer windows, and rain spouts. They took to the air, the stretch and flap of their wings leathery and brittle. They shed cast off pieces of shingle and stone all over London. Moira had never seen anything like it.
With the gargoyles gone, the rooftops weren’t safe.
London wasn’t safe.

In 1814, three cousins—Gretchen, Emma, and Penelope—discover their unknown family lineage of witchcraft when their individual magical powers unexpectedly begin to manifest. Now, beyond the familiar manicured gardens and ballrooms of Regency London, a dangerous, alluring underworld available only to those with power is now open to the cousins.
But by claiming their power, the three cousins have accidentally opened the gates to the Underworld. Now ghouls, hellhounds—and most terrifying of all, the spirits of dark witches known as the Greymalkin Sisters—are hunting and killing young witches for their powers. And, somehow, Emma is connected to the murders … because she keeps finding the bodies. Can the cousins seal the gates before another witch is killed …or even worse, before their gifts are stripped away?
“Harvey balances a large cast with an intricate plot with flair….A successful blend of Regency and paranormal romance.” ~ Kirkus Reviews
“Filling her latest with a large cast of characters— from the society elite to the magical world’s dark underbelly—Harvey keeps up the action and clever dialogue as the protagonist, Emma, deals with high-class mean girls, familial secrets, and a confusing crush. A smashing blend of adventure, fantasy, humor, romance, and historical fiction.” ~ Booklist

Alyxandra Harvey lives in a stone Victorian house in Ontario, Canada with a few resident ghosts who are allowed to stay as long as they keep company manners. She loves medieval dresses, used to be able to recite all of The Lady of Shalott by Tennyson, and has been accused, more than once, of being born in the wrong century. She believes this to be mostly true except for the fact that she really likes running water, women’s rights, and ice cream.
Among her favourite books are ‘The Wood Wife’ by Terri Windling, ‘Jane Eyre’ by Charlotte Bronte, and of course, ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen. Elizabeth Bennet is her hero because she’s smart and sassy, and Mr. Darcy is, well, yum.
Aside from the ghosts, she also lives with husband and their dogs. She likes cinnamon lattes, tattoos and books.

Book Description:
An opium-addicted beauty.
An infamous poet living in self-imposed exile.
An ancient treasure about to fall into the wrong hands.
Melanie Karsak’s “Chasing the Star Garden” takes the reader on an exciting adventure from the gritty opium dens of gaslamp London to the gem-colored waters of the ancient world, introducing us Lily Stargazer, a loveable but reckless airship racer with a famous lover and a shattered past.
Lily Stargazer is having a bad day. She just lost the London leg of the 1823 Airship Grand Prix. To top it off, a harlequin fleeing from constables shoved a kaleidoscope down her pants, told her to fly to Venice, then threw himself from her airship tower.
What’s a girl to do? For Lily, the answer is easy: drink absinthe and smoke opium.
Lily’s lover, Lord Byron, encourages her to make the trip to Venice. Lily soon finds herself at the heart of an ancient mystery which has her running from her past and chasing true love and the stars along the way.

Melanie Karsak grew up in rural northwestern Pennsylvania where there was an abysmal lack of entertainment, so she turned to reading and hiking. Apparently, rambling around the woods with a head full of fantasy worlds and characters will inspire you to become an author. Be warned. Melanie wrote her first novel, a gripping piece about a 1920s stage actress, when she was 12. A steampunk connoisseur, white elephant collector, and caffeine junkie, the author now resides in Florida with her husband and two children. Melanie is an Instructor of English at Eastern Florida State College.

The Outsider Syndrome: Guest Blog and Giveaway with Shane Filer

I was walking in the street yesterday and thinking of how we all are essentially made of the same atoms. All the atoms which make up our world today and the life on it come from the same stars that exploded billions of years ago. So we are all at least on an atomic level, interrelated. We are related to each other human, animal and the planet we live on. So why do I feel so disconnected? Is it because we have built a society where we bump into each other like hurried molecules, without ever having a chemical reaction where we deeply connect and stick to others?
I know almost no one in the city, Wellington where I currently reside. These people may be made of the same material, yet I do not fit with them. I wonder if it’s purely because New Zealanders lack a long history or deep meaningful culture or even for that matter nice architecture, and are big weather and sport small talkers - hence the heavy reliance on drinking alcohol for socializing. MSN Travel readers recently (and not without reason) voted this country “The Most Boring Place on Earth”.
But does that mean I would fit somewhere else? Or is it that once you don't fit, you never will. That there is something different in me, which won't ever really connect with people anywhere? Is it once an outsider, always an outsider?
Briar, the agoraphobic main character in EXIT doesn’t fit. She doesn’t want to pass through life doing the same things society says she should. She doesn’t want to be a mouse on a wheel. She wants to stop the wheel and escape from the cage. She is the white mouse. Uncertain and unsure of what lies beyond the cage. Is there a world she can survive in, or is the whole world hostile and dangerous and likely to eat up a small white mouse?
EXIT explores these questions, and questions within questions.
There is a certain romance to the idea of the outsider in art, especially literature. J.D. Salinger's marginalized anti-hero, Van Gogh, Dostoyevsky, Jack Kerouac, Morrissey, and James Dean. The outsider has become a celebrated part of culture.
As for me I guess I could move to France and live reclusively like Bridget Bardot - with a dozen cats. Now that sounds quite appealing.

Genre: YA, General Fiction, Contemporary
Publisher: Biblio Publishing
ISBN: 978-1-62249-142-1
Number of pages: 222Word Count: 58,000
Cover Artist: Ekaterina Zagustina
Book Description:
"Did you know I spent the whole of my fifteenth year in my room?"
Briar’s impromptu, mid-afternoon confession stirs up distant memories of the lonely time she spent trapped in her home; suffering agoraphobia — fear of open spaces.
Now it’s six years later.
She’s free, but the year's isolation has left serious personality disorders; disorders which will resurface as she relates her own story, and that of those in her orbit; Melodie, a pretty valley girl who Briar desires to be, Justine, her oldest friend, who has her own dark secret, and Dermot, a man who thinks he's the reincarnation of Robin Hood — stealing from the rich to give to the poor.
Slowly Dermot begins to draw Briar into his ever-so-exciting world, but who is leading whom on their slow descent into crime? Duel periods of Briar’s life intertwine like a rope around her neck as her lost year begins to overtake the present. It leads her to the answer to one very simple question: “Is it what I always feared — am I losing my mind?”

Author Interview Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpANm1NRvkU

Shane grew up in provincial New Zealand, a small place where options are small, were people wear PJs to the mall, a small place where dreams of being a writer or artist are not only actively discouraged, they are actively quashed. Nevertheless he fell in love with books, comics and writing at a young age and his early influences include Oscar Wilde, Alan Moore and Dr Seuss.
After many years of trying to get books, documentaries and films accepted in his own country, Shane gave up and settled for working in the fairly creative world of video-making and advertising.
A trip to Europe and the USA rekindled his love of writing, and he wrote the American-based novel ‘Exit,’ submitted it this time to American publishers and immediately, received several offers for the work. He chose one and ‘Exit’ will be released December 2nd 2013 in the USA as his first novel from Biblio Publishing.
It is the story of Briar Averill who spent a year trapped in her room, suffering from agophobia. Six years on, she’s free, yet ripples from the year's isolation still lap at the edges of her life, and that of her friends: Melodie, a pretty valley girl who she wishes she could be… Justine, her oldest friend, who has her own dark secret and Dermot who thinks he's the reincarnation of Robin Hood — stealing from the rich to give to the poor. Ripples echo down through the years, leading her to the answer to one very simple question: Is it what she always feared — is she losing her mind?
Shane has since had comic book scripts accepted in the UK by DC Thompson, publisher of the long-running ‘Commando’ comic, fulfilling yet another dream for his child-self.
He lives with a very old and very vocal Tonkinese cat, and they both dream of eloping together to the USA or Europe.
He likes oranges, orange juice, and orange furniture — in fact even the color orange. Why? Well, because it's the best color, of course. While he believes that being a grown up is not all it's cracked up to be, he still enjoys ruining his appetite before dinner, and staying up past his bed time.

Make Marketing Part of Your Daily Routine: Guest blog and Giveaway with Lisa Acerbo

Make Marketing Part of Your Daily RoutineLisa AcerboAuthors go through a moment of exaltation after writing their first book and seeing it for sale on Amazon, but what happens the day after it is released? Most newbies need to help market their book, especially authors who have not yet built a large fan base. While not a comprehensive list, here are some marketing strategies to let others know about your novel. 1) Tweet away. Follow people on Twitter with similar interests, respond to other authors, and look at authors’ posts. Review how authors market their books on Twitter and do the same. Keep up with Twitter on a daily basis. The more you tweet, the more you build an audience. 2) The same goes for Facebook. Post regularly and have friends, family, and fans like your page. Be shameless. You are a proud author. Promote yourself. It is also important to create a personal page and a page for the book. Keep your private life -- private. Your fans most likely do not want to see the hundred pictures of your cats, holiday parties, or family members. If you can link Facebook, Twitter, and Google accounts, it will make it easier for you to post. 3) Go on a virtual tour. Many companies will host your book on a virtual tour for a reasonable price and help get the word out. Bloggers are from all around the country and they have fans too. Use a virtual tour to increase your exposure to new audiences.4) Set up a Goodreads and Amazon Author account . On Goodreads, find and join the reading communities who are interested in similar genres. Find people on Goodreads willing to read and review your book. The more reviews on Goodreads and Amazon, the more likely someone will take a chance and buy your amazing story. Don’t forget to provide interesting information about yourself in your bio and share what makes your novel a must read. 5) Network. Get out there. Attend conferences and conventions. I went to a local arts festival and had my best sales to date at the one-day event. Take the time to talk to others and tell people about your story. You’ll make a lot of new friends and fans as well. Don’t forget other avenues such as LinkedIn. While most people use LinkedIn to promote business expertise, feel free to gloat about your writing abilities. The more people who know about your talents, the better. Whatever happens, don’t give up. I went to a huge Agricultural Fair and sold one book the entire day. While there are disappointments, it is important to remember your have a unique talent to share. Keep writing and promoting and your time and energy will pay off.

Do You Believe in Ghosts? Guest blog with Stephanie Andrassy

Do You Believe in
Happy holidays, everyone! Thanks for joining me here at Fang-tastic Books while I sit down to take a break from the hustle and bustle this time of year brings. I’m enjoying a large mug of hot coffee and some freshly-baked gingerbread men; still warm from their time in the oven. I wish I could share - these are really good!
There are only two more sleeps!!! My munchkins are excitedly counting down the hours until that jolly dude dressed in red magically appears at the base of their tree to sprinkle pretty packages full of surprises and fill their stockings with chocolates and goodies. How’s the energy in your house? As crazy as mine with last minute preparations?
It’s interesting what we’ll tell our children and what we won’t. I’ve vowed to never tell my children that Santa wasn’t real - no matter how old they get. The magic, mystery, fun, and meaning are all very much real and alive to me, and many parents happily and willingly encourage those same beliefs. At the same time, most parents probably wouldn’t encourage a belief in ghosts in the same way; especially when children are so prone to nightmares and worries about what’s lurking in their closets or under their beds. In my household, we didn’t have much of a choice.
My munchkins have always had an awareness of the possibility of ghosts and spirits. When my twins (son and daughter) were very small - around two years old - we lived in an older house with the ghost of an elderly man. We’d be playing in the back yard and one of them would point to something up by the house and say, “Man! Man!” Of course, I couldn’t see anyone, but they were convinced they were seeing a man and frustrated that I didn’t see him, too.
My son and daughter shared a room at that time and had just recently graduated to “big kid beds”. I walked into their room one day and found all of my son’s stuffed animals neatly and perfectly lined up along the headboard of his bed - between the headboard and the wall. I was certain my husband was playing tricks (knowing we had this ghost lurking about), but he swore he hadn’t done it, and there was no way either one of my uncoordinated toddlers could have managed such a perfect display. (At least a few of them would have been stuffed in there upside down or sideways!)
And then I saw him. I woke up in the middle of the night and glanced across the room, and there he was - standing in the doorway. He wasn’t looking directly at me, but you know I was sure as heck examining him in the darkness; wondering if I was actually seeing what I was seeing. And you’d think I’d start screaming or pounding on my husband to wake him, but I didn’t. I just wasn’t afraid - there wasn’t anything threatening about him at all. Dressed in a three-piece suit complete with a gold chain leading to a pocket watch in his vest pocket, and wearing an unbuttoned overcoat, dress hat, and dress shoes, he just stared quietly, and a little sadly, into the room. He reminded me of a banker from the 1920’s, and he seemed very, very old. He didn’t move and I went back to sleep. Yes - my “fear meter” was so low that I decided to go back to sleep while Mr. Ghost/Spirit was standing in my bedroom doorway!
I don’t know who he was and I’ll probably never sort that out in this lifetime. I did investigate a whole boatload of possibilities to no avail - I couldn’t match his description with anyone related to us or the house. We moved about a year or so later (I was sad to leave - that house always felt so welcoming), and as the kids didn’t appear to see him anymore, I don’t think our friend followed. But we have experienced some other “odd” things over the years (and in different houses) - electric toothbrushes that suddenly turn on, the television suddenly changing channels, the jar candle suddenly sliding off the top of the television and onto the floor... I once heard the sound of a large group of people socializing while I was in the bathroom with the ceiling fan running. The voices were so clear; I actually went to the windows to see if there was a party happening outside!
I’ve also been on the receiving end of a handful of psychic readings over the years. I’ll admit that the information has never been 100% meaningful, but when it is a hit (and there have been many of those) - it has been a direct, covered-in-goose-bumps hit. Let me give you a recent example.
Not long ago, I was wracking my brains trying to remember a name I’d loved as a teenager that I wanted to use for a character in Rocks Don’t Cry (the second book in the Home Series - Just Live, Juliette! being the first). A couple of days into this exercise, I had an email exchange with a friend on the other side of the world who happens to have some psychic ability. She didn’t know I was trying to remember a name, but innocently offered in one of her notes that she had a spirit standing next to her, rubbing her hair (head), and that her name was Anika. I nearly fell off my chair! That was the name!
I know there are those who are quite skeptical or firm non-believers. In the absence of scientific evidence proving the existence of the afterlife, spirits, ghosts, etc., then the idea must be false. (There’s never a scientist around to document the event when my television channels suddenly change.) I think it’s quite healthy to have a dose of skepticism to protect oneself from scam artists and cult inductions, but with my first-hand experiences, I can’t help but stop and wonder about the possibilities. Just Live, Juliette! and the Home Series is a chance to do just that - romance set within a landscape of possibilities - the parallel world of the afterlife. And with my fascination about the topic, I’m sure you can imagine how much fun I’m having writing this series! I hope you find the read as enjoyable.
So who will be visiting you over the holidays - the Spirit/Ghost of Christmas Past or just the jolly old elf, St. Nick? Best wishes for 2014!

"Juliette was the first to arrive for girl's night out at The White Peacock; a dull bar promising a lack of men on the prowl. She attracted many, yet felt they just weren't worth meeting, and after her last two disastrous dating efforts, a quiet bar suited her just fine. But in life, change is the only certainty. It is inevitable, in fact, and in the blink of an eye, her life would change forever."

S.E.R.A.’s Supernaturals…
Fairy Godmothers might be the mainstay of the Supernatural Entity Recovery Agency but they’d have a greater chance of ending up as a greasy spot on the ground without the backup of a paranormal partner.
Each non-Godmother agent has a unique set of talents and characteristics—some more unusual than others. Featured below are a few of the supernaturals who work for S.E.R.A. and help keep Earth safe from the bad guys.

Vampires: Drinking blood is a very private thing for these guys and they only feed from someone they’re emotionally connected with. Sunlight makes them sleepy, but doesn’t cause them to spontaneously combust or sparkle. S.E.R.A. vampires smell like sugar-dipped lemons when they bond.
Phantoms: Always have two life partners—one of each gender—which fulfils an inherent, soul-deep need. Possessing off-the-chart power it’s a good thing these guys are pretty good-natured. Just don’t get between them and purple spandex.

There are a number of other species who work for S.E.R.A., keep an eye out for these guys—because they might have their eye on you.

On the hunt for a supernatural with a dangerous new toy and evil plans, Jane and Sin find out how well they work as a team. Excerpt
I set the paper down slowly enough to see the thin edges shake as the full, personal impact of the newspaper article hit me.
"Natalie, what is it?" Jonathon asked, staring at me with those eviscerating blue eyes of his. I opened my mouth but no sound came out. Damn my unpredictable, inconstant voice.
For the past many months now, I'd been pummeled by one strange event after another, pulled into the center of a paranormal whirlpool. At least in this case, we had an inkling, some sense of the next onslaught. Still, a foreshadow was hardly a comfort. We couldn't have guessed the scope.
Now it wasn't just myself or Jonathon Whitby, Lord Denbury in danger, with the occasional collateral victim. Now it was a crowd. I knew the Association. I adored them. They weren't hooligans or criminals, they were gentle souls, artistic and individual. Overdramatic, yes, but a threat? Hardly. This maligning was the work of The Master's Society, turning lambs into lions in ungodly experiments, leaving them for fodder in sensational, indelicate journalism. It could only get worse. Exponentially worse.
"It's begun," I finally managed to reply quietly, sliding the paper across the lacquered console table behind the sofa toward Jonathon's reach. "Another phase. They've gone after the Association. And the papers will vilify those poor dears, every last one of them. Jonathon, the demons won't give up..."

Author, actress and playwright Leanna Renee Hieber grew up in rural Ohio inventing ghost stories. She graduated with a BFA in Theatre and a focus in the Victorian Era from Miami University. She began her theatrical career with the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company and began adapting works of 19th Century literature for the stage. Her one-act plays have been published, awarded and produced around the country. Her fiction career began with Dark Nest, which won the 2009 Prism Award for best novella.
Her debut novel, The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker, landed on Barnes & Noble's bestseller lists, was named a favourite of 2009 by 14 book blogs, won two 2010 Prism Awards (Best Fantasy, Best First Book), the 2010 Orange County Book Buyer's Best Award (Young Adult category) and is in development as a musical theatre production with Broadway talent on board. The Perilous Prophecy of Guard and Goddess, prequel in the Strangely Beautiful series, won the 2012 Prism Award (Best Fantasy). This currently out of print series will be reissued by 2014.
DARKER STILL: A Novel of Magic Most Foul, first in the Magic Most Foul saga of Gothic Victorian romantic thrillers (Sourcebooks), hit the Kid's/YA Indie Next List as a recommended title by the American Booksellers Association. The book has been praised by Seventeen and Pixie Magazines, Shelf Awareness, The Chicago Tribune and more, selected as a "highly recommended" title by Scholastic. The Twisted Tragedy of Miss Natalie Stewart continues the Magic Most Foul series and has been praised by Booklist, RT Bookreviews and more. She is serializing the finale, The Double Life of Incorporate Things on her blog in true Gothic Victorian fashion.
Leanna's short fiction has been featured in anthologies such as Willful Impropriety: Tales of Society and Scandal, "Too Fond" featured on Tor.com and Queen Victoria's Book of Spells: An Anthology of Gaslamp Fantasy (March 2013, Tor). Her new Gaslamp Fantasy series with Tor/Macmillan, THE ETERNA FILES, launches 2014. Her books have been translated into many languages and have been selected for multiple book club editions.
Represented by Nicholas Roman Lewis, Leanna is a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Romance Writers of America and International Thriller Writers. She is a proud co-founder of the original Lady Jane's Salon Reading Series in New York. Leanna was named the 2010 RWA NYC Chapter Author of the Year.
A member of Actors Equity Association and SAG-AFTRA, Leanna works often in film and television on shows like Boardwalk Empire. When not writing or on set, she's telling ghost stories, frequenting Goth clubs, corset shopping, channeling Narcissa Malfoy, wandering graveyards and adventuring in full Victorian regalia. She resides in New York City with her husband and their beloved rescued lab rabbit.
