Holiday Gifts I Love to Give with Thirteen Nights Author Sabrina Garie

Holiday Gifts I Love to Give
Every year around the holidays, I am always scrambling around for gift ideas. I not only like to give people I care about things they’ll appreciate, but I want my presents to speak to them in personal and meaningful ways.  Here’s my list of what I’ve found over the years that work with loved ones as well as with the new gal in the office down the hall you’ve talked to maybe three times that showed up in your secret Santa list. These ideas also work for all ages.
1.      Charitable Gifts.  I’ve started to give gifts that give back. There are two main ways to do this. a.      Support charities directly. My favorite is world wildlife, which has endangered species adoption kits (prices range dramatically).  This works especially well with kids who have favorite animals, families who can adopt together, or animal loving adults.  b.      Select gifts that support charities. You don’t just have to pick charities to be charitable. Many companies are getting into this game in many ways. Think Tom’s shoes, which gives away a pair to a poor child for pair bought or Target’s Feed line or all Paul Newman products.
2.      Books personalized to the recipient, from the giver, or to the relationship. What does that even mean? I like to give books that have meaning or relevance in some way. a.      Meaning to the recipient. For children’s birthdays, for example, I’d look for books in which the main character had the same name as the child receiving the gift. As another idea, I have a friend who loves poetry and used books. I often comb used book stores for just the right volume (and it gives me an excuse to spend time around old books).b.      From the Giver.  I often gift my very favorite books to others because they mean so much to me, I want to share them.c.      To the relationship.   I gave a boyfriend, with whom I shared a love of Italy, speaking Italian and urban places, a copy of Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities in Italian. It took me an afternoon of find calls to find a copy in a bookstore five states away, but I did it.  As another example, one year I gave copies of a book about our county’s school system to all my friends with kids in the system, it was one think I knew we had in common.

3.      A sensual Indulgence: Another favorite gift is to give someone a sensual indulgence they probably would not pick up for themselves or dig out the time to do without an incentive. a.      Taste. Thick chocolate dipped strawberries, the perfect cup of tea (e.g. loose tea and a cup with a filter) or a matched wine-cheese coupling, a unique bottle of wine.b.     Touch. A massage or spa day, even a mani-pedi. c.      Scent. An orchid,  scented soap or candles.d.      DIY Indulgences. Find ways to support their indulgences such as a year subscription to Gourmet Magazine, Buon Appetit or Wine Spectator so they can indulge themselves regularly.
4.      Presents which take years to complete.  This is the one gift-giving idea only works for close friends and family members because it assumes the relationship will endure over time.   But I like this strategy because it manages the chaos of holiday gift giving.  I gave my mother a Pandora bracelet and then have been giving her one charm for every event (birthday and/or holiday) until we complete the bracelet. Other examples include given one season of their favorite TV series every year until they have the whole thing or all the movies of their favorite actors/actresses until they have the entire collection.  My sister has been slowly replacing my favorite videos with the dvd versions.
5.      Activity-Centered Gifts:  Getting people to go out and do fun things is also a great holiday gift. I once gave three bottles of the same type of wine (e.g. merlot) and told them it was a wine tasting. I researched the wines to find highly regarded ones in three price categories ($10,00; $15:00; $25:00).  This could be done with a host of things—chocolate, coffee, tea. Personalize it to the tastes of the recipient.  Other gifts in this vein are movie, play or concert tickets along with babysitting coupons.  Just the babysitting coupons are a great gift.
6.      Do it together.  This year, my daughter and I are getting a chocolate tour and tasting in a local neighborhood across five different stores. It’s from friends and we’ll all go together as a joint family outing.  That’s my kind of holiday gift—friendship, laughter, togetherness and indulgence.
What are your favorite gifts to give and why?

Annie’s always been different. An empathic Amazon, she hides her emotional anomaly beneath her legendary fighting skills. To avoid passing on her genetic disorder, she’s always avoided the Thirteen Nights Ritual—the annual breeding rite among the warrior races of the Greek Pantheon. Only months away from 30, she is now duty-bound to participate. When she meets Tai, a half-human warrior who revs her up beyond legal limits and nurtures the gentleness she’s had to keep secret, thirteen nights of pleasure don’t seem nearly enough.

As a half human, Tai has survived by being faster, more lethal, and a whole lot smarter than his brethren. While the male warriors accept him for his achievements, the Amazons have never given him a second look. Until he meets Annie, whose smile is warm and real and whose body shudders with desire—for him. Determined to have her, he hacks into the Thirteen Nights database and rearranges the pairings to make Annie his breeding partner. Together, their strength and tenderness combust into pure love.

Genre: epic romance, fantasy romance

Book Description:

Ilona has been in love with her unsuspecting best friend, when a dashing stranger explodes into her life. The sudden magnetic feeling frightens her. Will he break her heart, or will he bring true happiness?

A sinister dark man appears, Ilona connects his presence with the series of mysterious deaths around her. She is an emergency room doctor, born into an ancient tribe which still exists hidden amongst us with its fiercely enforced rules. She doesn’t know much about her heritage besides legends and rituals that she continues out of respect for her parents.

She begins to remember the forgotten instructions concealed as rhymes her mother was teaching her since she was a small child and discovers that she can rearrange the human body to its healthy state. This ability is exciting as well as frightening. She is conflicted between having confidence in her intelligence and inherited abilities while having no confidence as a woman.

Her insecurity created barriers which keep others out, and I also keep her caged in. She has been evacuated from her easy and steady life, and is forced to face the unknown.

About the Author:
Growing up with a father who was a closet reader, some macho image that allowed him to only read in secret. After I caught him reading my book, The Lady of the Camellias, he shared his love of books with me and introduced me to many great books.
Before I started writing this series, I had played with the idea of writing a fantasy story peppered with historical facts. The history of the Huns always fascinated me—they were my ancestors—although I decided that it was a stupid idea after I started reading about how to write a fiction book. I had no idea how to create a good story line or form characters and make up a plot, and I wasn’t a literary genius. But, the idea didn’t leave me alone, and I kept adding events and dialogues in my head to Ilona’s story.
Not knowing how to do something properly had never prevented me from accepting a good challenge before, so I sat down at the computer and began writing. I've never been good at following rules or formulas; therefore, I discarded the instructions and made up my own rules.
I began writing Ilona's story as a diary, for my own enjoyment, jotting down the ideas that swirled in my head was far better than being haunted by them. For months I kept writing and soon realized that I never had so much fun doing anything in my life before.

It’s the Most Demonic Time of the Year…

Centuries ago, many people believed that demons roamed the winter darkness, and they filled the Yuletide season with light to keep the evil at bay.
Bitter Snow starts with the Running of the Demons on St. Nicholas’s Eve (December 5th), in the tiny town of Bremerton. I wanted to play with the idea of ancient superstitions and rituals that in modern times are just for fun, but that were taken more seriously in the past (like Halloween, which used to be All Hallows Eve, the night when the dead rise before All Souls Day).
Krampus demons parading through the streets on St. Nicholas’s Eve is a Central European custom, brought to America by immigrants.
In Bremerton, I took things one step further. The demons run from house to house, knocking on doors, and there’s a special ritual where the townspeople send them away. Legend has it that if anyone opens the door, the demons can enter, and spread evil through the whole town.
Since my story takes place in modern times, the townspeople think  it’s all just a fun tradition. But I also wanted to get that feeling of something stirring underneath the surface—something dark and dangerous, ancient and powerful. Then, of course, my main character, Gilly, opens her door on St. Nicholas’s Eve. And evil is unleashed in Bremerton.
To set the scene in Bitter Snow, I created a ritual with darkness and fire:
At six o’clock the arc lights went out, along with every other electric light on the whole block. Everybody who still had a flashlight or lantern on turned it off. There was no moon, only the cold bright stars overhead and the smudge of the Milky Way.All around us was primal darkness. The kind that made me understand why our ancestors had huddled inside caves and around fires. Anything could be out there. Anything.Then there was one tiny flame in the darkness—a lighter. Four torches burst into flame, one after the other, held by four roughly dressed men. Demon Keepers. They formed a circle around the unlit bonfire. From an unseen throat, away in the blackness, came a high, harsh, wordless cry. As one, the four Demon Keepers thrust their torches into the bonfire. The hay inside the stack flared up instantly, and we were washed in light. Light to keep the ancient horrors of the night at bay.Behind the Demon Keepers, the illumination spread over the demon cage. And inside, as though they had sprung from the darkness, were the demons.
…I pictured medieval Austro-Bavarian villagers, huddled in their cottages while demons howled in the night. Settlers in their cabins, listening to Native American war drums in the distance. Vikings in their longhouses, alert for the sound of enemies poised to burst in the door and bathe their hearthstones in blood. There’s something about sitting in an island of light, surrounded by darkness, that makes the back of your neck prickle.
In honor of the most demonic time of the year, here are some of my all-time favorite demons:

- Drusilla from Buffy the Vampire Slayer– not just evil, but crazy too. She makes my skin crawl.

- The muppet demons from the “Smile Time” episode of Angel – demons disguised as puppets on an edutainment show, singing about self-esteem while sucking children’s life energy out through the TV. Genius.

- The Headless Horseman from the new show Sleepy Hollow – when something doesn’t have a head and you can still tell it’s staring at you with murder in its heart – that’s terrifying.

Do you have a favorite demon? Who (or what) is it?
Bitter Snow Series Description
“We are the rulers of Midwinter. In the most powerful cold of the winter, in the deepest dark of the year, we hold sway, and all of your hearth fires cannot stand against us. We are the winds that howl down the chimneys and extinguish your candles. We are the northern lights and the hungry wolves; the bitter crack of ice and the killing frost. The raging blizzard and the deep, soft, final sleep of those lost forever in the snow.”
Bitter Snow is a modern retelling of the fairy tale “The Snow Queen,” in nine novellas. It’s my all-time favorite fairy tale, about a girl’s quest to save her childhood friend from the evil Snow Queen, through her courage, determination, and the strength of her love for him. Each volume is about 80-90 pages (32,000 words). The next three installments are scheduled for release in spring/summer 2014, with the final three to follow later in the year.

About the Author:
I was born and raised in New Jersey, and books were a big part of my childhood. When I was about three and a half, I became obsessed with a Little Golden Book about a goat that gets a bucket stuck on its head. Since no one would read me the goat book as often as I wanted, I learned to read it myself—and haven’t stopped reading since. It was only inevitable that I turned to writing, so I could create more of the kind of stories that I like to read!
My favorite genres are mystery, sci-fi and paranormal/fantasy. I’ve always been fascinated by myths and fairy tales, and I love incorporating elements of ancient lore into modern stories. I have a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the University of Alaska Anchorage, and I currently live near Portland, OR, where I am a freelance writer and editor. My other esoteric skills include astrology, figure skating, and the ability to do a perfect split.

To Kiss a Werewolf by Molly Snow: 5 Reasons Why I Prefer Werewolves to Vampires

1.     Hot-blooded. You know that scene when Jacob is in the tent with Bella, and he jokes to Edward about how much hotter he is. I think we all got the double meaning to that ;) Yes, I was “team Jacob.” What would you rather cuddle up to? A frozen popsicle or a warm blanket?
2.     Muscle. Now, I’ve never been the type to be into super muscular guys, but there’s something about muscle on a male lead in a romance that is oh-so nice. They look better in plain white tees, for instance… which is a major plus.
3.     Tan skin. Who’s ever heard of a white vampire with a tan? That’s right—I haven’t, and neither have you. Enough said. It was very important that Damien in To Kiss a Werewolf could sport a tan, especially since he likes to surf.
4.     Sporty. There’s a reason those Teen Wolf movies from the 80s had werewolves that played sports. It’s believable. Can you imagine a vampire on a varsity team? (Okay, okay, I guess you might imagine Emmett, but that’s the exception rather than the rule.)
5.     They can fall asleep. I’d rather have a guy who would hold me in their arms all night, rather than stand at the foot of my bed watching me sleep all night :) Who’s with me??
And that’s it. What do you prefer, and why? Do you agree or disagree with anything I said?
To Kiss a WerewolfMolly Snow

Release Day Blitz Ruler of Demons by Scott A. Lerner

Good vs. Evil
Guest Blog – Scott A. Lerner

One of the common themes in Ruler of Demons as well as Cocaine Zombies is the concept of good vs. evil. In books and movies it tends to be easy to determine which is which.
Sometimes it is as simple as looking to see who is wearing a white hat and who is donning a black one. Realty is more complicated. Few people are pure good or pure evil. Hitler was a vegetarian and spoke about his love of animals. Stalin was said to have loved his mother. Mother Teresa wasn't particular about who she accepted donations from, including some strongmen who probably didn't come by their money honestly. She apparently had a few other faults as well.

In the world of the paranormal identifying good and evil is even easier. Demons, Vampires, and Zombies are often portrayed as soulless creatures of the night, without qualms when it comes to murdering the innocent. Writers also tend to portray evil characters as ugly and good ones as attractive. In Ruler of Demons, a character's goodness or evilness cannot be determined just by looking at them.

Ruler of Demons revolves around the idea that sacrificing innocent people can bring about the End of Days. This seems like an easy call on the good vs. evil scale. Yet it is not. Since ancient times, there have always been people who believe that performing acts of great evil will summon the messiah to earth. Thus, they practice evil to bring about a positive outcome.
In Ruler of Demons it is unclear if the ancient cult is seeking to summon the messiah or the devil. I also explore the question of whether or not the devil is a creature of pure evil. Did the devil simply get bad press in the Bible?

These issues are relevant in our day and age. Terrorists believe they are doing the Lord’s work when they murder the innocent. Perpetrators of evil usually claim they are in the "right"--whatever that means. Religion has often been used to justify bad acts, from slavery to war. Religion has also helped feed the poor and clothe the needy.

Yet, all of these heavy philosophical issues need not be resolved in order to enjoy Ruler of Demons. There are problems fiction can’t solve. I know, crazy, right? In fact a hug and a bottle of bourbon will do more to bring people together than any novel. That said, you never know.

I also find that snacks have the ability to help bring people closer together. It is hard to be angry at a person, no matter what your philosophical differences, when there is a snack tray in front of you. My suggestion would be to cuddle up by the fire with a special someone along with a tray filled with chocolate, cheese and a copy of Ruler of Demons. Unless you read the book, you'll never know if Sam will actually save the world or if mankind has run out of time.

When you're done, you may still have questions about the nature of good and evil. Sam, Bob, and Susan are--in the end--just regular people confronted by unusually powerful religious zealots. Mostly I just hope you enjoy their company.

Ghostwriting Guest blog with Joyce and Jim Lavene (and we're talking about actual ghosts)

Writing about ghosts can take on many different forms – like the ghosts themselves. In Murderous Matrimony, and Perilous Pranks, the ghost is Wanda Le Fey. Wanda wants revenge for her murder.
Wanda wasn’t a pleasant person to be around when she was alive. Most people at Renaissance Faire Village in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina didn’t like her. She had a habit of being cruel when treating their aches and pains as the Village nurse. But that was nothing compared to what she can do to them as a ghost!
Her ex-husband, Shakespeare, has probably suffered the most. As her abilities develop, so does her torture of him. There’s only one person she likes less, and that’s Jessie Morton.Jessie didn’t kill Wanda, but she did get revenge for a prank Wanda played on her by dyeing her blue from head to foot right before she was killed. Now it seems Wanda will go through eternity naked, and deep blue. That’s enough to make any ghost think of suitable ways to make someone unhappy.
One way that Wanda has made Jessie miserable is by ruining Jessie’s love life.  Chase, Jessie’s fiancé, and the Village Bailiff, can’t see Wanda. All he knows is that a cold wind seems to be blowing through their bedroom.
It’s only two weeks until Jessie and Chase’s wedding. Murder, and the Blue Lady - as Wanda has been called - are stalking Renaissance Village. Can Jessie find a way to handle Wanda – and find a killer?

Interview, Spotlight and Excerpt Initiation by Rayna Noire

1.     Tell us about yourself.
I am a Midwesterner, locked in a state that experiences tornadoes, floods, and blizzards. As long as the water isn’t ankle high, I write. Nature is my go-to friend. Walks refresh me. It seems fitting that I do my part, by planting trees, flowers, and feeding the birds.
2.     Have you had other careers before becoming a writer?
I’ve done pretty much everything, from writing PR ads to short order cook. Even though I‘ve trained for other jobs, I always felt writing was what I needed to do. Currently, I still have a day job.
3.     How did you get started writing?4.      As the last child in the family, my mother was too busy to answer my numerous questions. Instead, she taught me to read and write when I was four. I devoured every book I could get my hands on. I was very disappointed in the first grade reader. I read it the first day and told all the non-readers how it ended. This did not make me popular with my teacher. I felt obligated to write several alternatives for Dick and Jane. A few had hot air balloons, sky diving bad guys, and Lassie.
5.     Tell us about your current series / WIP.
Currently, I am writing the Pagan Eyes series. It features the Carpenter family, who are Wiccan. They keep getting lost in time, but deal with real issues such as suicide, bullying, rape, and divorce. Issues your average teen or young adult encounters.
6.     What is your next project and when will it be released?
Revelationis the next book. It should be out in February. Keep your eyes and ears open, because there will be free days for Revelation.
As for series, my next one is Druidic in nature. I am totally convinced a trip to England is in order to visit Stonehenge.
7.     Where do you get the ideas for your stories?
Stories ideas come from everywhere. I recently dined with my daughter in a chain restaurant where the woman behind me detailed loudly how she spied on her husband. I thought that could be a story. Instead of finding out her husband was cheating, she might discover he was a hit man or an alien, something unsuspected.
8.     Do you have any upcoming FREE promotions you would like to tell us about?
I am always running contests. It’s good idea to follow me on Facebook to see what’s up. Facebook.com/AuthorRaynaNoire
I am planning to offer Initiation free on December 27th after everyone has opened their new Kindles. There will be another free day when Revelation comes out, but I don’t have that date yet.

Book Description:
Leah Carpenter thought being the only witch in her local high school was hard. That was until she inexplicably found herself in the past running from an angry mob, which turned out to be much harder. Lionel, the man in charge of the mob, holds a grudge against a girl he calls Arabella. He thinks she’s Arabella.
Luckily, just about the time it looks as if she’s done for she pops back into her century. This causes trouble at school, but at least she has an understanding family. What happens in the past can hurt her. The whiplashes covering her body are proof enough. Her Nana believes she has to right a wrong in the past to stay in the present and go out with her crush, Dylan. What she discovers in the past is an evil so pure that it makes her blood run cold. She might not ever make it back for geometry class or more importantly a possible date with Dylan.

The smell struck her first. The acrid, smelly odor reminded her of her fourth-grade field trip to a pioneer village. The candle maker had intrigued her by dipping wicks in what she had assumed was wax until the woman explained it was made of animal fat from butchered animals. That’s what it smelled like, along with the campfire aroma of burning wood.In the misty night sky, a clouded crescent moon shed meager light on the surroundings. Turning slowly she examined the primitive thatched hut behind her. In the small front garden, a split log supported by two stumps served as a bench. An oaken bucket sat by a door that flew open. An elderly woman hobbled out, dressed in a black cloak. The woman reminded Leah of her grandmother, but instead of a look of fierce determination, terror pulled her face into an anxious mask. Reaching Leah, she tugged on her clothes, pushing her toward the woods. “Flee, flee, they come. Smell the torches.” The woman pointed to a path winding toward the east.A dim glow was coming from that direction, along with the sounds of voices and snapping branches as dozens of feet marched in their direction. An overwhelming desire to run after the unknown woman came over her. Another part of her wanted to see who was coming down the path. It was only a dream, right? People couldn’t be hurt in a dream, or could they? She struggled to remember what her psychology teacher, Mr. Schaeffer, had said. He’d said either people couldn’t be hurt by their fears or your fears could kill you by bringing on cardiac arrest.A few men came into view, burly men garbed in shapeless garments, with wild hair and ragged beards. Held high the flickering torches illuminated a small circle around them. One held a curved knife, reminiscent of the scythe the Grim Reaper carried. It didn’t bode well. One of the men spotted her, yelled, “Witch!”   and charged her way. It was a definite bad sign, causing her to sprint toward the woods in the same direction as the old woman. Sticks, rocks, and briars pierced her feet, reminding her of her shoeless state. At home, she excelled in cross-country, but she had shoes, sunlight, and a feel for the course with no angry villagers behind her. The running men drew closer. Leah stumbled over a tree root, wasting precious time.“Here, over here.” The voice came from overhead. Staring up into the canopy of leaves, she saw a small hand motioning to her. Of course, hide in the trees. Why didn’t she think of that? Grabbing the lowest limb, she pulled herself into the leafy covering. In the dark, she felt for the branches, climbing higher. Eventually she grabbed an ankle or calf, and received a hand up for her trouble, helping her climb higher.Good Goddess, how many people were in this tree? She held her breath as the light and noise came closer. The few men below argued about which way to go, while a woman waded in with her opinion. “Samuel, let the witch get away. Mayhap he uses the witch for his own purposes.”One of the front-runners denied the accusations. “Martha seeks to harm my name, because I did not plight my troth with her.”The argument moved on a little farther away from the tree. Leah exhaled in a whoosh, thanking the stars for the scorned woman and lack of dogs. As if hearing her silent prayer, a long canine bay rent the air.

About the Author:
Rayna Noire is an author and a historian. The desire to uncover the truth behind the original fear of witches led her to the surprising discovery that people believed in magick in some form up to 150 years ago. A world that believed the impossible could happen and often did must have been amazing. With this in mind, Ms. Noire taps into this dimension, shapes it into stories about Pagan families who really aren’t that different from most people. They do go on the occasional time travel adventures and magick happens.

Release Day Blitz Twisted by Holly Hook

Today is the release day of Twisted (Deathwind Triolgy #1) by Holly Hook!

Purchase on Amazon   Purchase on B&N   Purchase on Smashwords

Sixteen-year-old Allie isn’t like other girls. Instead of spending her summer break sitting around on the beach, she takes the epic vacation of a lifetime.

Tornado chasing.

And she’s not disappointed. Just a few miles from the town of Evansburg, Nebraska, Allie meets her dream of seeing a tornado. In person. She can’t wait to tell her friends back home. Never mind that her parents are going to kill her.

But her dream soon turns into a nightmare, and a strange event leaves her shocked. Confused. When she returns home to Wisconsin, something’s…different. Allie now bears a curse so awful, it could destroy everyone and everything she’s ever known.

With her best friend, Tommy, Allie must return to the plains to find a way to reverse it. She enters a world that she had never imagined, where she becomes a pawn in a fight to save the people of Evansburg from her fate…or to destroy them.

Teaser
My very first tornado touches the grass of the plains.
I stand next to the van, mouth dropping open, heart pounding.  It’s the moment I’ve been waiting for, saved money for, begged my uncle to book us for the Wild Weather Storm Chasing Tours for.
Uncle Cassius swears next to me, equally in awe.  It barely cuts over the wind rushing towards the distant funnel.  Waves of grass bow down to the twister, whipped down by the surrounding air flying in to feed it.  The perfect white cone stands out against the coal sky, slim and graceful.  A skirt of dust spins around its base, signaling its dance through a field a few miles away.
“Beautiful!”  Kyle, our storm chaser guide, snaps a photo for his website.  He steals a glance at me and smiles.  He’s all enthusiasm, joy that we’ve found our prey. “Don’t worry.  We’re safe.  It’s heading to the east.  It’ll pass no closer than a couple of miles to our north.”
I want his job someday.
“I’m not scared,” I said, but my shaky voice betrays me.  Who am I kidding?  Kyle’s an experienced chaser–twenty years–but this is a real tornado.  In person.  Live.  I never realized it would be this intense, this breathtaking.  A hollow feeling fills my stomach like I’m plunging down the first hill of a roller coaster.
The tornado curves, almost like it’s leaning to the side for a better look at something.  At us?  It’s a silly thought, one that makes me laugh.  The thunderstorm spins slowly above it, low and menacing.  Thunder claps.  It’s enough to remind me that the storm in front of me isn’t just beautiful.  It’s a predator, entrancing like a cobra and ready to strike.
Good thing there’s no houses or buildings in its way.  Only farmland stretches from horizon to horizon.
“Allie.  Forget your camera?”  Uncle Cassius slaps me on the arm, smiling.  It’s a tense smile.  So I’m not the only one with some nerves going.
Camera.
Yes.  Duh.
I pull it out of my pocket and fumble with the slim case, fingers hunting for the button.  The camera zings to life.  Behind it, the tornado looms a bit larger, gaining strength and racing across the ground.  More dust kicks up around the perfect white of the twister.
“Now I can really prove to everyone at school how crazy I am.”  I give Uncle Cassius a nervous chuckle.  The camera trembles in my hands as I catch the tornado in my view, click, and seal it in my memory forever.
I’m having the most insane summer vacation of my entire high school.
I lift the camera for another shot, backing up to squeeze the tornado into the viewport.  I click another picture and lowered the camera again for another look.
My heart jumps.
The tornado looms larger, taller.  Kyle holds his hand up to his face, squinting for a better view.  Even Uncle Cassius goes quiet, stiffening and taking a step back towards the tour van.
All at once I understand.
The tornado has changed course.
Kyle turns.  Real fear widens his features.
“Get in the van,” he shouts.
* * * * *The one big thing I can recall from those first ten seconds is the roar, like a distant train growing closer.  The wind whips my hair back, trying to pull me back out of the van.  It feels like the twister’s right behind me already, coming down for the kill.
I slam the door on it.  The funnel’s much bigger behind the glass, so much that I can’t see the top of it anymore.
Uncle Cassius snaps on his seat belt next to me.  Kyle starts it up, punches the gas, and gets us back on the road to nowhere.
I toss my camera to the floor.  My hands fumble with the seat belt.  The van speeds up, slamming me into the seat.  The specter of the tornado closes in, whipping across the field towards us.  I’ve heard of tornadoes making sudden turns like this but I never realized it could happen this fast.  It rips across the field, coming straight at us.  My heart beats on a runaway course.  My mind locks into overdrive.  I feel like that news crew they always have on tornado shows, that one that survived by hiding under that overpass.  Will Kyle make us get out and climb under one?  They’re actually bad places to hide.  That news crew got off lucky.  Kyle knows better.  He’s been chasing storms longer than I’ve been alive.
Only green and yellow spreads out ahead.  No shelter for miles.  Worse, no ditches.  The radar on Kyle’s laptop is covered in ugly red and orange blotches like Nebraska has sores.
A hole of panic opens up inside me and for the first time, I regret coming on this vacation.
“Can’t you go faster?”  Uncle Cassius leans forward in his seat, gaze hard, arms trembling.
Uncle Cassius never loses his cool.
Ever.
Not even when I accidentally set his Persian rug on fire when I was seven and broke my arm at the age of nine.
Outside, the tornado grows so close that I could only see the bottom half of the funnel.  The van bounces along every speed bump on the highway, every uneven spot.  My stomach heaves.  I’m going to be sick right here.  It’s my stupid fault we’re in this mess.
“I don’t understand.”  Kyle punches the gas harder, making the van jump.  He turns his head like Linda Blair in the Exorcist, eyes widening.  “The tornado should not be moving this way.”
He’s right.  It shouldn’t.  But it is.
The funnel reaches the road behind us, twisting harder, kicking up earth higher and higher.  We’ve gotten out in front of it.  I breathe a sigh of relief.  Kyle and Uncle Cassius do the same.  It’ll cross the road and forget all about us.
Kyle lets off the gas a little and the whine of the engine calms some.  “We’re safe now.  That was highly unusual.  I’ve never seen a tornado turn like that in my career.”  There’s a hint of an apology in his voice.
“Well, that was a close one, wasn’t it, Allie?”  Uncle Cassius hugs me from the side.
“Yeah,” I say, willing my heart to slow down.  At least I can think straight now.  Can I even do another two days of this?
Wow, what a dumb idea this was.
But I still can’t resist another look at the storm.  I turn as far as my seat belt allows.
My guts fall out of me all over again.
The tornado’s still on the road, bigger than ever.  It can’t be.
The twister has turned again.  It’s coming right up behind us.  Rolling dust eats the entire highway.  There’s tornado taking up the whole view of the back window.  Dust rips to the sides.  The bottom of its funnel spins with fury, big enough to swallow a house whole.  Its roar screams against the outside of the van, shaking the seat, pushing the whole van to the side.
It’s no longer beautiful.
“Ohmigod,” I say, sucking in a breath.  “Um…Kyle?  Stomp on the gas.  Just saying.”
“I know!” he snaps.  His knuckles turn white on the steering wheel.  The van lurches again but he maintains control.
“Allie, get down!”  Uncle Cassius puts his huge hand on my back and pushes me towards the floor.
The seat belt cuts into my throat.
What good is it going to do?  If the tornado lifts the car–
I’m going to die.
I begged to go on this trip and now Uncle Cassius is going to die too.
The windows shatter with a deafening boom and the wind screams in my ears.  AllieAllieAllieAllie…
I can’t breathe.
We’re floating.
Uncle Cassius shouts something.  Kyle yells.  If I’m screaming, I can’t tell.  The storm’s sucking it right out of me.  Windy hands seize my arms, my legs.
They pull.
My safety belt snaps, whipping against my leg.  I cry out with the sting.  The seat disappears under me.
I’m flying.
The tornado’s ripping me right out of the van.
The world turns to a white and brown roar.  The van’s gone.  I have no time to cry out to Uncle Cassius before the world snaps to black and silence takes the place of all.
