Party Reminders

We recently finished a class here at Marilu.com that was called GOOD TO GO !!! The title was a reflection of The Total Health Makeover itself which is a lifestyle that lets you go anywhere and enjoy the party.  Marilu lives this every day of her life and we can’t think of anyone who is busier and more active than she is.  So dive right in and don’t worry that you won’t be able to enjoy the party.  The Total Health Makeover will help you enjoy your life MORE because you will look and feel your best.

Before you head out this weekend here are some simple tips to help you stay on  track.

~ Don’t leave the house famished.  Eat a little something before you go.  You can still enjoy good food when you’re less likely to dive headfirst into the nachos if you aren’t starving.

~ Stay hydrated.  You don’t need to avoid alcohol on this plan but follow this rule of thumb; two glasses of water for each alcoholic beverage.  Your skin will thank you and your waistline will thank you.  (You’ll also be less likely to make an awkward phone call or text message!)

~ Ask for olive oil instead of butter or skip the bread altogether.  Just tell your server at the outset of the meal.

~ Bring a healthy dish to share if you’re going to someone’s house.

~ Focus on the people and the conversation.  This will not only keep you from focusing on the food but it makes you more interesting and helps you to develop your memories.

Halloween….a cautionary tale !

“Remember, the routine you follow during Halloween week builds like a snowball rolling down a hill by the time you get to New Year’s Day.  The eight pounds the average person puts on by January 1 begin with habits established in October.  Start on the right foot for the first of the big four holidays, and the other three (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s) will be a piece of cake (a piece of sugarless, dairyless, chemical-free cake, that is!)”    Marilu Henner, Healthy Holidays   Don’t let the upcoming holiday season get you sidetracked.  You can enjoy the season, the parties, the food AND good health.  Consider spending the holidays with us here at Marilu.com.  In addition to our upcoming HOT FOR THE HOLIDAYS class we have ongoing support 24/7.   Enjoy your best year ever !   It’s all just a click away:  http://www.marilu.com/registration1.php

Lentil Pasta

It’s been awhile since we’ve included a recipe here.  We’re adding this one today for two reasons.  It’s fast and it’s economical.  For those of you with children we suggest making this before you head out for trick or treat.  It’s a good chance to get something warm and hearty into them.

1/4 cup olive oil

4 cloves garlic

1/2 teaspoon pepper

1 bunch asparagus

1 can lentils

1 can tomatoes with basil

1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1/8 cup Bragg’s

1/8 cup white wine

1/4 cup basil

1 pound pasta

In a large pan, saute garlic and pepper in olive oil.  Add asparagus.  Saute for two minutes, add lentils, tomatoes, Italian seasonings and Bragg’s.  Let simmer, drain.  If it gets dry add white wine.  Add basil. let simmer 5 to 10 minutes.  Pour over cooked pasta of your choice.

Why Dairy Free?

Dairy has been connected to a variety of illnesses diseases and ailments.  It’s purpose in nature is to nourish a different species, and even then, only in infancy. Here’s some more compelling evidence that might just motivate you to ditch the bovine slime.

“The 9 million cows in America, for the most part, are not healthy. Half the herds in America have cows affected with bovine leukemia virus, half the herds have cows infected with a disease called Crohn’s disease, which is caused by a bacterium called mycobacterium paratuberculosis, which 40 million Americans have been affected with irritable bowel syndrome from this. Every person with Crohn’s disease tests positive for mycobacterium paratuberculosis. Every one! One hundred percent! And this was published in 1965 for the Proceedings for the National Academy of Science. So we’re talking about real science, here, not things I’m making up. You’ve got thousands of studies published in scientific journals, thousands of converging lines of evidence that tell us that milk does not do the body any good. We drink body fluids from diseased animals.”

Being Prepared

For many of our members in the United States this weekend brings storm warnings.  If you don’t live on the east coast of the U.S. you’re spared the hurricane warnings this time but we all know that, wherever you live, from time to time you need to be prepared for a few days without conveniences.

We’ve got a few tips for stocking your cupboard that you can use, either now or in the future.

Be sure that you don’t use loss of electricity as an excuse for eating poorly.  Chances are, without refrigeration, you’ll be eating more concentrated food than usual but you can still get wet foods into your diet if you give it a little thought.

~ Choose fruits that will hold up without refrigeration.  Apples and oranges and bananas are good choices and an uncut pineapple will last on the counter for some time.

~ Have bread, crackers and nut butters on hand.  Buy raw nuts rather than salted nuts and splurge on some dried fruits for snacking.

~  Healthy cereals and boxed almond, soy or rice milk are great to have on hand and granola can be a snack by itself or used as a cereal.

~ Under normal circumstances we’re all about getting the most value and reducing packaging but in a storm situation have single serve packages at the ready, salad dressings, fruit cups, tuna.

~ If you have a stove top or a grill you can make a hearty soup out of canned tomato sauce and cans of beans and vegetables.  Add your favorite dried herbs and you’ve got a meal.

~ Create your own single serve meals and place them in the front of your fridge or the top of your cooler so that you can grab them fast.  Salads can be made in advance and placed in resealable plastic bags.  Make stackable salads in jars putting dressing on the bottom, heartier veggies next (carrots, peppers, onions, then the greens in ascending order so that the greens are not soaking in the dressing.  Grab the salad and turn it over on a plate.

~ Tomatoes are still in season in some areas and they keep well without refrigeration.  A sliced tomato will taste great by itself or drizzled with some olive oil as a salad.

~ Don’t forget about your pets.  When you’re stocking up on the human food make sure you’ve got a reserve supply for the furbabies.  If the power is out and the stores are closed you’ll be glad you have an extra bag of kibble.

These are just a few ideas for inclement weather and power outages but they also work for other instances.  It’s good to have these items on hand for days when life throws you a curve and you just can’t get out to shop.

Of course if there’s a reason to expect power outages or danger of any kind we urge you to follow the news and weather carefully and to make preparations as suggested by your local office of emergency management.

Donald Trump talks about Celebrity Apprentice

Check out this interview with Donald Trump. http://themississippilink.com/tag/mar...

It sounds as though he’s looking forward to the new season of Celebrity Apprentice just as much as we are.

Once the show begins to air, in just a few short months, we’ll have a lot of fun chatting about it here at Marilu.com.  Of course we’ll all be rooting for Marilu and her charity The Alzheimer’s Association.

With Marilu’s Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory she’ll have a distinct advantage that will keep the competition fascinating and also highlight the need for research to help protect people from a Alzheimer’s.

Classes at Marilu.com

We’ve just finished our GOOD TO GO class here at Marilu.com.   Many thanks to Marilu and Coach Heather for an amazing two weeks.

Here’s what one of our members, Cristee, had to say about class:

Wow! That is all I can say! I am really enjoying and appreciating everyone’s comments and tips about this lifestyle. I’ve gone back and forth with it, but after the birth of my child (1 year ago) I really started feeling bad, both emotionally and physically and I’ve been looking for a way “back to myself.” I am feeling grateful this morning as I type this because I think I’ve been guided back to THM as a real focus and mender for things in my life! I need to get serious about it, and this class is bringing alot to the forefront for me already. Thanks so much, everyone!

Does that sound like something you’d like to take part in?  Well it’s not too late!  We have many more exciting and informative classes coming up, beginning with HOT FOR THE HOLIDAYS on November 7th and running through November 21st.

Sign up here to make this your best holiday season ever !

Feeling in the PINK…Being in the KNOW

During the month of October it’s likely that you’ll see more pink ribbons than ever.   We’re thrilled to see that awareness raised !!

Here at Marilu.com we’re all about health.  This is NOT a celebrity diet.  This is a way of life that will help you to avoid disease and enjoy good health so we encourage you to not only donate to worthwhile causes, such as breast cancer research, but to also learn all you can.

Learn about the charities to which you donate.  Are you buying a product because a percentage of the proceeds will got to charity?   Check the fine print to see if there is a cap on that donation.  It’s possible that they’ve already given all they’re going to give and the charity would be helped more by writing them a check directly.  If it’s an edible product read the ingredients.  The first line of defense starts with YOU .

A plant based diet will protect you from cancer as well as heart disease, diabetes and a host of other diseases and conditions.

“While scientists are hard at work searching for specific breast cancer-fighting compounds, the safest approach is to apply what we already know: Diets that are highest in a variety of plant foods and stay away from heavy oils, meat, and dairy products, help prevent a great many diseases. The earlier in life we start, the better.”
