Field Trip: Abandoned House #1

My friend Amy has two abandoned houses that abut her property. We've been wanting to explore them for years. Eight years ago we almost went in and then we chickened out. (Why we thought they'd be any safer eight years later, I have no idea.) But she wanted to try again, so I said I was game.

We believe the owners of the first house are still alive. They don't live in the area. Years ago there was a dispute among family members as to who had the rights to the house, the feuding family members r...

Writing about writing

(cross-posted from Facebook)

Do you like reading about the process that goes into stories, or does it kill the illusion to know what authors are drawing from? I'm trying to decide if I should document the process of Starving Years in the newsletter. Stats say the folks who read about the making of Zero Hour also really explored my website a lot.

Magic!

OMG...I think I need to go to this. It's a long haul and I would need to stay in a motel, but so worth it.

Crazy Frank's

In addition to the Pendarvis field trip I took last Thursday, I swung by Crazy Frank's on the way home. And since I had my camera, I'm sharing it with you! (Aren't you lucky? You know you are.)

Thousands of items just for peanuts! 14,000 sq. ft. of...I forget what. Bargains? Fun? Bewilderment? Definitely bewilderment.

The fun starts in the parking lot. In the other states I've lived, Illinois and New York, fireworks are illegal. Here in the hinterlands of Wisconsin, we don't care if you blow yo...

Wisconsin's closeted history

Last week's trip to Cress Funeral Home felt like the beginning of a good habit to me. My fear is that the writing well might run dry if I sit here alone every day typing from morning 'til night, with no one but two cats for conversation. And so I'm challenging myself to go on a field trip every week.

I was supposed to visit an abandoned house today, but my intrepid friend had to reschedule, so I made my way down to historic Mineral Point instead. Mineral Point was a booming city in the 1800's,...

JCP Interview at Wave's

Wave sez:
I decided to interview Jordan again because so much had happened in her life, both personally and professionally, and I wanted to know what was driving her. Was she going through a mid life crisis at 25? Did she come into money and so could afford to quit the EDJ? What secrets was she hiding in the graveyard?

I has TV again!

Finally, my TV is working again. I needed a digital converter, I got the part, I installed it. Total cost to get broadcast TV was about $90, including the guy who climbed the 40-foot antenna tower in my yard to attach the new coaxial cable. (Converter: $40, cable: $20, daredevil: $30.) I'm frankly surprised I can pick up broadcast TV at all in the valley where I live. I only get six channels now, but FINE. I just want to know if tornadoes are coming.

With satellite, I remember scrolling throug...
